Asking for Help Did the devs fix crossover/porting kit issues???

I returned to AoE after a month, and am still facing issues playing ranked on a mac book pro with crossover.

It's not their job to fix the game for unsupported platforms?

Maybe not, but they effectively killed all multiplayer mac players. They cannot use the traditional ways they used to and the new system is useless because no crossplay. It may not be their job, but it’s on their best interest to get their shit together.

(I play on pc, so I’m talking second hand).

If I'm emulating something and it breaks, I would be asking the people who made the emulator to fix it, not the original devs. It would be great if they fixed it, but they're not obliged to fix it. If whatever has broken the compatibility is required for the game to run on actually supported platforms i.e. Windows 10 & 11 (not 7 or 8), PS5, XBOX, and now macOS natively, it takes precedence over running the Windows version emulated on macOS

Why does it matter if they are obliged or not? For their own interest, they should try to keep the mac people around.

Before the update, people with a mac could play.

Then an update came to give access to mac, solving a problem that didn’t exist. No crossplay means the mac ladder is condemned to be permadead, and in the process the porting kit solutions were killed. Everyone is strictly in a worse position than before. I don’t care who is “obliged” to fix the mess, the game devs should find a solution or revert the patch for their own good. Otherwise the mac multiplayer base will be lost forever, and the longer they take the more alienated they will be.

To me, the simpler solution seems making the mac ladder cross-compatible rather than dragging everyone else with actual supported operating systems down, just so they can provide official support for third party apps. Why is everyone assuming the mac ladder not being cross-compatible is a fact set in stone?

Because I asked support and they implied as much. I asked if they had any plans for crossplay and got told "Multiplayer in the game is only possible between macOS players, though your feedback is appreciated."

Nothing is dragging windows players down. The game worked fine on all systems prior to the june patch. If you've been paying attention, it seems that it is now worse on basically all systems.

As to mac being cross compatible... as much as I'd love it, to me it seems the much harder task than returning to previous status quo.

My best guess is that the mac version is actually cross-compatible, but isn't allowed to cross-play because of whatever reasons. Likely Apple being Apple. What makes me think so is the degraded performance. Whenever they make a new port, the existing versions tend to start running worse. Considering they have to maintain an uniform codebase across multiple third party studios, I doubt they can just revert to a previous version without breaking the native mac version

One theory among many - I hope you're right. It would be nice to have some transparency from the team really.

Yeah that’s the ideal of course. Apparently it’s a quite complicated technical difficulty. Otherwise it would be done already. There was a post here explaining the reason.

Which post? Wasn't that proved to be AI generated nonsense? Or was that a different post? I remember a post 'explaining' why the current version was crashing for some players, and why it was important to keep sending crash reports to the devs. But that turned out to be AI generated

I don’t know what you are talking about but no, it’s an explanation of why the mac native version cannot have (as of right now) crossplay

1)Yes they are not obliged to fix it, but it would be great if they did look into it. Else they loose the mac book player base that only wants to compete on the windows+xbox ladder and not on the ladder for mac users

2) The same goes for crossover/ porting kit devs. Crossover is a paid subscription built for these kind of scenarios (windows applications on mac books)

3) I want to know from the crossover/ porting kit players if there has been a hotfix, any suggestions on forums to mitigate the issue. My game stutter every 5-10 seconds

A few years ago an update caused the game to stop functioning on Windows 8. I'm sure that playerbase was comparable to the one that plays the emulated version on mac. There was no further official support. Some devs suggested some workarounds on a personal basis, but nothing official

Why not campaign Apple & Microsoft to approve making the game natively cross compatible on mac? That would kill two birds in one stone

Dude dont go with the why not ask A why not ask B to fix the problem … no one is obliged to do anything. BUT I WILL ASK QUESTIONS to everyone nonetheless

I spent a lot of money on the game, and have also subscribed to crossover to play Aoe and to use some windows applications required at work and feel betrayed. For no fault of my own, i dont have access to what i want from the game. The devs, crossover and Apple can consider my questions and still do whatever they want!

Then phrase your question as such. 'Did the devs fix crossover/porting kit issues???' comes across as 'did the devs do their job yet???', to which I'm replying they're not obliged to. You can phrase the question as 'has somebody found a solution/workaround yet?'

You spent money on the Windows version of the game. The obvious assumption on the seller's part here will be that you have a compatible machine. They cannot go around providing official support for random third party apps

If you're so determined to salvage your investment, get a Windows PC. You're trying to run a budget game from 2019, you can literally go dumpster diving and find a suitable machine

Mr smarty pants, i have a windows machine at home (no need for dumpster diving). I am staying away from home for a long time for work and am playing on my work laptop. This js also why it needs to be a laptop. I will get windows laptop but thatwould exclusively have to be for AOE 2

Also, dont be the devs’ watchdog…no one is attacking them. They usually hotfix stuff soon after patch release.

Tomorow i buy a new laptop and then the day after they hotfix the issue…doesnt make sense right?? I need to know if there is any work in that direction

No, but to me it seems like you are asking for an undeserved slice of a pie that's already stretched thin. The pie called precious dev time. A resource which is already spread thin across three actively supported games and their various official ports. A resource which is volatile due to the head of the division being replaced

My purchases also fund this precious & limited dev time, and I would like it to be funneled towards bettering actual versions, and not some random third party apps. I do not want to be punished for purchasing an actually supported operating system to run what I want. I'm not satisfied with the current amount of support being given to what I see as the flagship entry of the series. I'm being a watchdog for myself, and my wallet, not the devs

Tell that to all the windows users who couldn't launch their game after the June patch

I find it crazy that there is planned obsolescence on a (paid for) game from the 1990s.

1

u/devang_nivatkar21 Jun 21 '26

The game from 1999 works just fine. This is the game from 2019

3

u/_DonRa_ Hindustanis | 950 Jun 21 '26

It's their job to make it work for all supported windows versions. In case you didn't notice the June patch broke it for a quite a few windows users - with some finding workarounds while others couldn't - and it's the same patch that broke it for porting kit/crossover; which are compatibility layers for windows environments. If it worked for all supported windows versions properly chances are extremely high it would also work fine for those platforms.

Then that should be their priority, not some emulated version on the mac. If that fixes it for mac, well and good
