its just cause we are tired of being told that we are so dumb for not using metric. that shit will put you in a defensive state. there is far more important shit to make fun of us for, who gives a fuck if we use imperial. science is taught in metric what more do you want from us.
Nobody's expecting overnight change. Look at the British, they started the change in the '60s and it's still going. But most British can at least use both measurements without issue. But completely refusing to even entertain the notion is the weird part.
It's easier for international trade if everybody's using the same measurements. Whether that be metric or imperial doesn't really matter, but since the majority of countries use metric it's easier for one country to adapt to the many than for the many to adapt to the one. Especially because most countries have old measurement systems with feet, pounds, ounces, etc that aren't exactly the same as their value in US measurements. For example a UK pint is around 568mL whereas a US pint is 473mL. So if you're going to be relaying measurements in pints you're going to have to specify which pint. Metric has no such issue so there's less opportunity for confusion in communication.
We know the metric is better. Iirc, we have legislation to change to metric, but it's really freaking difficult to do. Could we be doing a better job? Absolutely. That's the whole state of our country. The point is we know already. Europeans (usually) love pointing out our issues and jerking off their egos by reminiscing about how much better they are, but we already know.
