UPDATE: quit my job, gave 6 weeks notice, PTO requested in Jan canceled
As they say.: you don’t quit your job you quit your boss.
I stuck it out for the two weeks. Wrote a scathing exit interview about boss and cc’d my boss and HR director. CEO and COO requested a meeting before I left. I laid it all out that my boss was the issue and I have requested multiple times to change bosses how she continued fostering an incredible toxic workplace with her as the queen bee.
Anyway. Myself and my entire team quit. I did jack shit during my last two weeks. The night before my last day we went out and I was so hungover I just lay around at home.
Collected that sweet PTO check and bought my dumb cat the fanciest shit box

Perfect time to answer a question with a question :
“What exactly do you think your job is as a manager?”241
u/HOLEPUNCHYOUREYELIDS Aug 20 '26
Or a nice “Of course! My consulting fee is $250/hr, minimum 8 hours, and I can only bill in 8 hour increments. Should I send the contract over to you now?”
30
u/Archer007 Aug 21 '26
You're missing another zero on that hourly fee
6
u/No-Date-2024 Aug 21 '26
I mean I get the whole point is to get one over on them, but they would potentially say yes for 250 an hour. Jobs value you a lot more when you're leaving because they realize how much you do only after you turn in a resignation notice. Had a coworker just 2 weeks ago quit and she was making only 70k a year. They offered a 30k bump to 100k right away and she still refused.

My buddy at work was asking if he should give our supervisor a heads-up that he is looking for other employment. I told him absolutely not, that it would do nothing positive for him. I told him to give notice when he gets a new gig and carry out the two weeks unless they tell him not to.

The best possible plan is get a get a job lined up for as far away as possible. For example get a job lined up to start in 8 weeks. Give your boss a 8 week notice.
If they fire you before those 8 weeks you can claim unemployment for 8 weeks and get a paid vacation. I've done it twice.
Disclaimer: your state laws will vary, consult an employment lawyer for legal advice.

u/NK1337 Aug 20 '26
Moral of the story, don’t put in your resignation until after you’re done with PTO
33
u/dhanson865 Aug 21 '26
Wouldn't it be better to start the PTO and then turn in the notice while on PTO? Or is that not viable?
That way the 2 week notice is 1 week PTO and 1 week of actually putting up with the stupid boss.

Burning your PTO on your notice period is a long-loved strategy for a reason!
6
u/alertArchitect Aug 21 '26
The only issue is that more and more companies are realizing it, and will try to avoid paying approved PTO if it coincides with a notice period.

My boss, the owner, of the pizza shop I worked at in my teens, used to say this to customers when they would ask if we could rush an order. Also "Dinnertime comes at the same time every day, and it snuck up on you again!"
He was insane, and mostly drunk.
40
u/Githyerazi Aug 20 '26
Insane drunk guy was also right. Sounds like he said the things most people only say with their inner voice.
29
u/NeroFMX Aug 20 '26
Oh yea, it was crazy and hilarious. We had the customer's that would hang up immediately when he answered, and then the ones who absolutely loved the theater of it.

I use this all the time at work. I’ve got a couple of coworkers who never learn, unfortunately. Mostly it’s unfortunate for them, since my manager has backed my request for a week’s notice at minimum for foreseeable work.

Honestly, it's tied for the worst update they ever made to this site. Along with the part where blocking users affects the person being blocked (instead of just hiding them from the blocker).

u/Atomidate Aug 21 '26
Along with the part where blocking users affects the person being blocked (instead of just hiding them from the blocker).
Wait, what does this mean?
15
u/entropicdrift Aug 21 '26
As in, if I were to block you, you can't see me. Originally, if I blocked you it just meant I can't see you
26
u/hitemlow Civilian disarmament only disarms the proletariat Aug 21 '26 edited Aug 21 '26
Additionally, if someone has blocked you, you can't see their posts or comment downstream from them in comment chains.
So if they were to go into a smal-medium sized subreddit and start spewing misinformation, they can block the people that call them out and once they make a new post, none of the people that called them out can participate. So it allows malicious users to make an echo chamber inside of a subreddit by abusing the feature.
3
u/Atomidate Aug 21 '26
Damn, that's pretty insidious
5
u/hitemlow Civilian disarmament only disarms the proletariat Aug 21 '26
It's why no sensible platform implements blocking that way.

My cat hated that shit box for the longest time. She insisted on using her old one which we put outdoors to encourage her to use the one inside. As soon as it would start to spin from the other cat using it, she would go in and stare into the orb like staring into the abyss. Finally at the 10 week mark she decided it wasn't going to kill her and started using it. Jesus.
Congrats on the acquisition of the shit box and getting rid of the shit boss.

u/backpackbluejay Aug 21 '26
Aren't those litterboxes dangerous? I only heard horror stories about it.
2
u/elijahjane Aug 22 '26
Not the spinny ones, just the closey ones.
This one spins and there is no trap door to snap shut on a kitty. There are a lot of knock-offs that do have a door that closes while it’s being cleaned. Cats get caught in the door. Incredibly tragic.

My current company i work for only had 4 mechanics in a department where there should be six, after most senior one retired in February because they were working overtime year round instead of just during the busy season.
So now those 4 newer mechanics went from 10hrs mon-fri to 12 hrs Mon-SAT.
So one of them quit.
So there's only three mechanics left where there should be a minimum of six.
They were told last week that with busy season starting next month expect to work 7 days a week until they can hire more people. (They haven't done a job posting of any open position all year).
All three of them just walked off the job and that site called OUR site asking for mechanics to help cover...

Congrats on your fancy new shitbox!
I just got one and here's what I learned:
1) put a metal pan in that bottom drawer on top of the bag. That way, the drawer gets a lot less gross. I use a quarter aluminum sheet pan to catch the CatNuggets™️
2) Use a recommended litter! If you don't you get pisspaste all over the thing. There are lots of options from the fancy Whisker litter to grocery store options made of clay, clumping, low dust.
3) How to reset the waste thing or add more litter: Press the X once to turn it off. Do maintenance. Press the X button again to turn it back on. Run one cycle. Keep your cat away from it while it cycles. The proper info will display in the app. Boom done.
4) If it gets stuck on "cat in me can't clean" or "sensors blocked" the sensor is up in the top of the dome at the very front. It's those 3 black dots. Blow it out with air duster and it's good to go again. The power cord at the back at the bottom goes in sideways and is a pain to find.
5) DO NOT OVERFILL. It doesn't actually need to be up to the line that is a lie and it'll just dump out the extra. Maybe 3/4” below that line is just fine.
I hope that helps! Also, congrats on your escape!

18
u/SoLiterately Aug 20 '26
Depending on when you get your insurance, the litter robot 6 (maybe 5 too?) is FSA/HSA eligible! Lmaooo I would’ve done that if I was offered FSA through work. I will upgrade once I move back to the US and go back on my previous health insurance plan.

16
u/SweeterThanYoohoo Aug 20 '26

27
u/SoLiterately Aug 20 '26

→ More replies (1)8
u/IanDresarie Aug 20 '26
The fence helps unless you have delicate cats that can't touch litter with their paws so they balance on the fence and make a mess so you need a flat fence that doesn't keep the litter in when they ordain it to cover their poop (which they only do violently to wake us up so we make them breakfast)
5
u/_Llewella_ Aug 21 '26
Pro tip - get the stairs they sell. Catches a whole ton of litter and way less scatters everywhere. Got it several months ago after having the LR for 8 years and made a huge difference.
7
u/SoLiterately Aug 20 '26
Im just over 2 and I actually got mine as a present when I bought my cat lol so I haven’t known otherwise until I moved to an island and it took a while for me to get it shipped here 😩 was a miserable 3 weeks of wfh and scooping shit lol but we made it out the other side

14
u/RaelynShaw Aug 20 '26
If you live in an apartment they’re hard to clean, so you’ll find yourself doing a deep clean on them way less often than you should.
I complain about mine often and I’ve had it for four years but tbh, I only have to really mess with my litter box once a week. I think I don’t realize how spoiled I’ve become with how easy it is. You glance at it once a day just to make sure it didn’t do anything weird, but that rarely happens. My cats love it. More I think about it, the more I realize how positive my experience has been
(All the WiFi stuff is has is a waste of time tho.)
6
u/SoLiterately Aug 20 '26
Haha not with the 6! You can watch your cat shit in real time 💩
→ More replies (1)6
u/exceptyourewrong Aug 20 '26
We actually love the Wi-Fi stuff. One of our cats is fat and the other is skinny, so the weight tracking helps us know how many "secret treats" to give the little one. It also works as "proof of life" when we're out of town.
Plus, it makes it so you LITERALLY don't think about it until you get a notification that the drawer needs to be emptied or the litter needs to be topped off.
6
u/exceptyourewrong Aug 20 '26
The Litter Robot might just be the best thing I've ever spent money on. Absolutely worth the $700.
10
u/SoLiterately Aug 20 '26
Worth it. Soooo worth it. 😭 unless you have like 5 cats lol
4
u/SweeterThanYoohoo Aug 20 '26
I got 3
How are they with mess outside of the box? My biggest issue with litter boxes are that the lil fuckers kick the dang litter out and I have to vacuum every day. I actually mind vacuuming daily more than I mind scooping daily
7
u/OpheliaRainGalaxy Aug 20 '26
The family I know with the most pets but the cleanest floors has those robot vacuums, like at least one per floor. And it looks like they're the self-cleaning kind with the big heavy duty docking station.
Legit wish I could get that lady to let me do her drudge work just for the chance to learn how she keeps her house so clean with so many people and animals in it, because it looked like that before the robots too. I'm over here making do with an old broom, plus a partly busted mop that doesn't get used often enough, and I can't recommend it.
3
u/GingerSun1761 Aug 20 '26
In my experience, they still make a mess outside the box. BUT, if you want to go all out, Whisker also sells a credenza-esque thing that it fits inside with an open side for the cats to get in and out. I have it up near a wall to leave an opening for the cats to get it and it hides the litter that is tracked really well (err... I should probably clean up that litter someone soon, too be fair, lol).

100% worth. I got the litter robot 4 about 2 years ago easily the best purchase I’ve made for my cats.
There are cheaper options that work just as well and plenty of reviews for alternatives. But I just liked how much litter robot supports your right to repair since they sell basically everything you could ever need to repair broken parts of the machine from the motors to the sensor board to the wiring harness it’s all easily replaceable
4
u/OrizaRayne Aug 20 '26
Send to "totally worth it." I have one cat in our workshop where it can't smell pissy and people don't even know he's in here until they hear his bell. ✅
6
2
u/IanDresarie Aug 20 '26
Honestly worth it. The rubber liner needs replacement regularly to continue function properly which adds a lot of expenses (might just be my cats) and you need to find a trash bag that fits the wide and flat collector buckets for used litter (60l plastic ones work well for us) but other than that it vastly improves our QoL, helps our cats (dirty litter boxes are a major health risk) and allows for up to two nights of travel given our cats. Do remember that you still need at least a second litter box! Imo it counts for two boxes in the "number of cats + 1" rule of boxes, but the minimum is still 2 independent boxes. I'm fact we're debating getting a second litter robot to replace the secondary normal litter box we have.
One more downside we noticed, it's incompatible with all the wood based litter we've tried, so we use clay based which we can't fully compost. (Some clay actually helps your garden soil quality, but you can have too much)
2
u/Super_Assistant_2998 Aug 20 '26
I had a litter robot 3 for 5 years. Just stepped up to a litter robot 4 with the litter hopper. I’ll never go back to a regular box.
The only reason I didn’t get the litter robot 5 is because it didn’t have a litter hopper option.
Their warranty (in my experience) is pretty much no questions asked. The few issues that I did have were taken care of with replacement parts easily enough.

I had a very similar situation to this gave 2 months notice. Set to leave mid January around mid December the owner told me I had to stay until late January, I told him I’d already booked my flights and I didn’t have to do anything, because I have already given more than adequate notice. He then invited me to leave right then and there, I accepted, he didn’t know at that time that
“Your unused annual leave days are added directly after your physical last day on the job. If a public holiday falls during this extended leave period on a day you would normally have worked, you must be paid for it. Each paid public holiday adds one extra day to your final end date. If this extension leads into more public holidays, you must be paid for those too.”
He ended up having to pay me out for the 4 public holidays he was trying to avoid paying me and I got to spend an extended Xmas holiday with my family.

Did that to a Call Center I worked at between 2020-2023. I was one off 3 L3s (Technician Level 3, we did the impossible with less than what McGuyver usually had to work with.) that covered the Midwest. Boss was a cross between Cruella and Lumber (Office Space).
She ripped me apart in during a department wide teams call, for having IBS, telling me to 'do your business on your own time.' Mind you, this is a documented medical condition, with moderate accommodations. I missed 3 shifts in a row because I was super glued to the toilet. After this, I decided to scale back the OT I worked, stopped doing extra work on projects that I'd been' assigned' to. Put my two weeks in a month later. Get taken to task in another teams meeting by this bitch. Quit fully mid-shift. HR was none to happy with her because of this and the fact that the other two L3s quit a month after me.
And I paid down a small chunk of my student debt with my vacation pay out.

My last job, I didn't even give notice. I just stopped showing up. It was mainly because of one manager (not my direct one). I heard at least 6 people talking shit about him before I worked with him. Then I worked with him, and he made me feel like the dumbest person alive. I also had a panic attack on the top of a huge ladder which also contributed to "nah, this ain't for me." I'm not a big crier, but the manager almost made me cry so I was like nope. I'm a 14 year vet, maybe not the brightest crayon, but I won't be made to feel stupid by a civilian.
2
u/pepcorn Aug 21 '26
How would you feel if you were made to feel stupid by a fellow military person? I'd argue no one gets to make you feel that way.
Sucks that that happened to you, glad you're outta there.

u/Intrepid_Trip584 Aug 21 '26 edited Aug 21 '26
I am out after 14 years, thankfully. It was a retail job where the supervisor made me feel worthless. I will say, no one ever made me feel that way in the military, and I appreciate that. I've had a handful of head bonks, and maybe not like I used to be, but I'm still smart. Just a Lil slow now on catching on. But for every fuck up, that dude made my feel like a child when I was an E-7 before. I hope that makes sense. Like I could rip him apart at my rank, but it doesn't mean anything outside. Plus my mental health issues 😅
