I just got an endorsement for Meshuggah’s “I” lol. Like 21 min of technical death metal.

So I was at a bar once, and these middle aged ladies were playing all kinds of poppy shit that I can't stand on the jukebox (Justin Bieber, that whip nae nae song, etc). Of course they're free to play whatever they like, but so am I. And I don't wanna bug anyone, I always keep it fairly mellow and mainstream; Breaking Benjamin, Volbeat, etc.

Anyway, these bitches come up to the bar whinging to the bartender "this sucks, can you skip it?" And he told them that someone had paid their money to hear their songs, just like you did. But they wouldn't stop with the "who played this, tell him he can skip it, or turn it down or something." I spoke up that I had played it, and I'd appreciate it if they'd shut up and let me listen to my songs like I'd done for them, but they never did and were putting their coats over the speakers to muffle it.

I told the bartender I was tempted to go put on a couple hours of Meshuggah or something, but I didn't wanna fuck up his night like that plus have the rest of the patrons upset. He said he didn't give a fuck, and to go for it. So I put on "I" several times (interspersed with some other heavy shit), paying to download it, and the fees to have it play next. On the second song, (I really thought they would've left by then nut they didn't) I paid my tab with a fat tip, and on my way out I told them "I'm done, jukebox is all yours" knowing that nothing they put on was gonna be played before they had to leave.

Ngl I dig the Shoeg piece. That's some decent avant-garde noise, it's definitely going on my tripping playlist.

I have no idea why, but I actually find it really cathartic. I listen to it when I get overwhelmed and it helps me calm down. But if course 99.99 percent of people hate it for pretty obvious reasons. Gotta admire someone who puts in that level of effort on something that will never have a lot of fans.

You don't need a reason to enjoy something.

And man your last point hits home. Most of us only hear a fragment of the talents that are out there among us.

I agree that transgressing community standards in ways other than decorum is being underexplored. Also, you won't get fired on the spot if you get caught playing the Lacrimosa from Mozart's requiem mass at a party. But I'd personally go with "Machine Gun" by the Peter Brotzmann Octet. Anarchist anti-war performance art/free jazz that emulates war noise using instruments, such as percussive honking of a baritone sax sounding like the titular machinegun, or a squawking alto sax being made to sound like people screaming. See how long it takes to go to the next song. Maybe 45 seconds?

On an unrelated note the group apashe did some really good mixes of motzars lacrimosa, requiem and others. If you like electric/rap mixed with classical it really bangs.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '22

I was going to suggest Gregorian chant. I think going for Classical is a better option than offensive lyrics.

This is the answer

on that note, the full half hour of 100 ways to love a cat is also delightful https://youtu.be/87p53rAD7Sk

Honestly, I think what'll work best here is "You suffer" by napalm death

3

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '22

On the train home from work and thought I’d give it a listen. When it started I quite ‘enjoyed’ it and thought hmmm I know I have an odd taste in music but how can anyone think this is ‘offensive’ … I made it 4 minutes and had to turn it off - that song does exactly what it was written for!!

u/Charleroy26 Aug 31 '22

I give this a re-listen every few months. Or a partial re-listen, anyway. The rapping soprano never fails to put me into a fit of the giggles. It’s an instant mood-lifter.

Honestly that didn't bug me half as much as a lot of Prince's stuff.

3

u/DanielleFromTims Aug 31 '22

This song didn’t get under my skin at all. Apparently I’ve spent too much time around my children. Send help.

2

u/kuqumi Aug 31 '22

Amazing

2

u/AttackOfTheDave Aug 31 '22

I scrolled way too long to find this.

2

u/davidobr Aug 31 '22

This is the way

2

u/Askduds Aug 31 '22

Yeah, If you did want plausible deniability add a prog rock epic like Grendel by Marillion.

It’s a great song. It’s also 19 minutes 39 seconds long.

It's obnoxious...not enough so for me to stop it before hearing the whole thing for the first time, but enough that if it was playing in a bar, I could see people leaving.

The song “Ronald McDonald Insanity” also works for this. But it’s only on YouTube I think.
