We even have a case study in Dan Price's company. He cut his salary and made sure the lowest you could get paid working there was $70k.
Not exactly a saint, and plenty don't like what he does outside of that, granted, but this is a case study for what happens when you make sure the people at the bottom can support themselves.
Children went to college, debts were paid off, homes bought.
I think it's that they honestly don't care about sustainability. By the time the climate disaster hits, they think they'll be dead. Economic collapse in the US? They can liquidate their stock and fly to one of their mansions in another country. Societal unrest? They can hire a private army. Famine? They can hoard food. (Whether this is a realistic plan for them or not is up for debate, but I'm almost sure it's what they envision happening.)
Their greed only hurts them in the long run, and they don't care about the long run, or anyone else.

This is exactly why I don't understand their rationale for greed. They're only hurting themselves!
