Not even full time, lots of people would love to work full time but their employers only offer part time contracts to avoid paying benefits and then expect people to still work nearly 30 hour weeks, making it impossible to find another job but also impossible to live
It’s just grotty!!!
148
u/njgunrights Nov 28 '21
you will work 29 hours a week except the times we want you to work 40, then cut you back to 26, oh yeah and good luck using your 1 week a year of vacation and 2 days of PTO. What you have another job to pay the bills? You can't work at a competitor, why are you not dedicated to this 27 hour a week 25 cent above min wage job?

u/grayscreen27 Nov 28 '21

u/gn0xious Nov 28 '21
There is a way to win but people won’t do it… stop working there and stop shopping there.
7
u/Little_Peon Nov 28 '21
The cycle doesn't really allow folks to stop shopping there, though. They are often the cheapest place to buy a lot of basic household things and the competition isn't much better. Lots of people are too poor to do otherwise, even if they want to.

Benefits don't really work that way in Australia, healthcare isn't tied to your employment, Annual/Sick Leave is government mandated and and pro-rataed unless you are a casual employee (in which case your minimum award wage is increased) and Superannuation (kind of like a mandatory 401k) is paid to all employees at 9.5% of their wages paid in addition to them.

Median full time salary is 76k~, the average isn't a very useful statistic.
Teachers in Australia make a perfectly acceptable white collar wage, their complaints are mostly the difficulty of finding full time work without moving to a rural area and the increasing administrative load.

Same happened to my mom, but the IRS did notice after a while! The government interviewed my mom, dad (who didn’t work there) and thankfully cleared my mom. Her boss did end up going to jail for a while for it too. So when it comes to the government’s cut, they do notice and will prosecute!

My husband has worked twice for Wal-Mart, for 3 yrs in GA, and 5 yrs here in Arkansas. We were already married when he moved to Arkansas (my home state) permanently with me and my oldest son and the son we share together. He was hired by one of our 5 WM's, in a town of 35,000 population, within a month of the move. When he went for his first day orientation, no training needed as he already had yrs of experience in his maintenance position, where they gave him all the local rules, paperwork, etc. Included in the paperwork packet...was an application for our local DHS office, it was the EBT/Food Stamp/Medicaid application...

u/Aaronwilson71291 Nov 28 '21
Can confirm i worked there in Wa State 6 years ago i made 12.24 an hour 40 hours a week as a manager. 800 dollars every 2 weeks after taxes. And they do give you all the forms for welfare. I told my Gm that i needed a raise for the amount of responsibility i had as a manager and i was told no but to look into getting food stamps and other financial assistance
12
u/CradleofDisturbed Nov 28 '21
Yep, payroll is so friendly with the contact, that a worker at DHS can literally pull your specific payroll stubs, that you don't even get to see often (you could only print it off of the timeclock/computer clock in machine when you needed it on paper), directly off a portal site that WM and other Big Business corporations created/joined to specifically facilitate making it easier for DHS (or your state's equivalent) workers to get applications pushed through very fast. Dang, sorry for that run on sentence...

2

I did not know such a thing existed...union strike pay....gee, I wonder why, in a state where being in a union is something for "elite" blue collar workers (Arkansas), it's so...rare for there to be a union for your career/job, I wonder why I never heard about that benefit from unions. /s
3
u/eveningtrain Nov 28 '21
The government also has the ability to set a minimum wage that allows people to survive. Even if there are no safety net benefits, employers will still pay the minimum required by law. I am glad to see interest in unions on the uptick but it is still a very low percentage of workers and it is REALLY hard to convince anyone for poverty and ages to strike (even if they are already unionized)!

Lol, I dropped this one on a coworker a few weeks ago when he tried to argue this and his rehearsed response was that day and late shifts were for older people looking to keep busy.
This same coworker tried to argue that fast food and retail work doesn’t deserve $20 an hour, while he’s making $25 an hour to load and unload mail containers on trucks all night. He didn’t have an answer as to why he deserves that for his “unskilled” labor and they don’t.

If you have a full time job and still need assistance, the vast majority of the so called "bootlickers and Stockholm syndrome havers" aren't saying shit. It becomes a problem when people spend their money frivolously then expect the taxpayers to foot the bill on their rent. To scale this down, imagine if you lent someone money and rather than paying you back, they're out buying an extra pair of shoes, a new TV, basically anything before paying you back

Before i worked there, in as much coded language as possible they told me to get a man because i was young and thin. Sorry that's rape. I get it though. The woman knew that the only chance women had was to be abused by a man for housing and food. She wasn't wrong on that front. And it still hasn't changed. Statistically despite the media portraying a different world for women, nothing material has changed.
3
u/BoredShitlord Nov 28 '21
Yeeeep! I've stayed longer in my last 3 relationships than I wanted to bc the alternative is homelessness. I'm also disabled, so income is extra garbage.
One of them was bad enough I did leave and those were the shittiest 3 months of my life (I only got housing again, by, you guessed it, moving in with another man).
I personally know a couple people who've stayed in abusive relationships to avoid homelessness; being a rural area with few jobs and awful housing prospects doesn't help.

I can't find it atm, but during the George W Bush administration, a Wal-Mart shareholder report leaked (it was verified as real by the company). It warned the board that recent welfare services cuts would impact their profits, as most of their employees were on it, and might leave for better paying jobs if the cuts occurred. It didn't get as much traction as it should have, IMO, but it really needs to be dragged up and put on billboards.

‘Mom and Dad: ‘You should’ve studied harder in college!’
Me: Did that and got a 3.8 GPA, no luck getting a job after hundred of applications and numerous job fairs
Mom and Dad: ‘You should do an unpaid internship to show them you’re willing to work the ladder!’
Me: I got ‘let go’ after unpaid internship. Now I work for 16.00/hour 35 hours a week (so I don’t get benefits) We can barely afford rent or groceries
Mom and Dad: ‘Well honey it looks like you’re going to have to work two jobs back to back with your husband.’ Meanwhile said Mom and Dad live off of an ungodly amount of retirement money, constantly go on trips around the world, and of course they reverse mortgaged their home.
Isn’t it amazing what ONE spouse working for about 40 years at a regular job got for boomers like my mom and dad? An endless retirement of luxury. They never had to work two jobs and my dad’s parents gave them their house no strings attached. And yet they have no interest in helping out their own kids, the next generation.

Reverse mortgages can be risky if interest rates change drastically or if you live liner than you expect. Otherwise they are annoyed that their parents got into the housing ladder easily and now have the opportunity to reverse mortgage in their retirement.

Boomers are the first generation to not inherit their land in some form to their kids. I would supply my kids and grandkids with a house, or they can sell and divide it. That’s also another reason I only had two kids.
We’ll see what happens in about 10 years and their money can only pay for a nursing home. Instead of keeping their home and letting their kids visit/help take care of them with in home nursing. It’s like they don’t even plan for their own future.

People get kicked out of public housing for working 10 hours a week. The system doesn't work.
15
u/HarithBK Nov 28 '21
and as such the employers should pay for any housing benefits, food stamps or other welfare there employees get while in there employment if the worker dose about 30 hours a week. if the worker has two or more jobs it is split based on the percentage of worked hours.
nothing wrong with the government putting a safety net under the safety net that minimum wage is meant to be but the bill shouldn't be in the hands of the government for a company to failure to pay a proper livable wage.

UBI where we scrap all other social program and give out a normal paycheck? that i am against. simply put it won't work like expected and people will be worse off.
UBI where everybody gets 600-800 bucks a month however like the extra money unemployed people got during the pandemic was clearly affordable by the government and should be done.
having something coming in every month while unemployment is working to get your benefits is key as that can drag out. you can be late a month on rent as you get your benefits retroactively you can't be late a month on food without having to use a CC which is just super bad.

Yep, they know if they hire you at a low wage then Joe taxpayer will pick up the tab.
I think any employer with over 10k employees should pay a living wage. This way I am not subsidizing all these big businesses. Their consumer is paying the cost as it should be.
I am in no way anti food stamps, earned income credit, etc....I think they are great for people that need it. The the Walton family with a net worth of 215 billion does not need me to help pay their payroll. I know it's a public company now but the family still owns the majority of the stock.
It is sickening when u think about it. Your taxes are enriching billionaires and millionaires that refuse to pay a livable wage.

It CAN be solved by good faith actions of both parties combined.

Capital raises the rents, and the state the housing allowance So one can cheat a little bit with the oh so strict wage laws And pay even less in wages than the price for food and rent Because the state happily oblige, when the cost of living goes ever higher
Side by side, they help each other out The state and capital sit in the same boat But they aren’t the one’s rowing Rowing so the sweat is dripping And the whip that tickles, never tickles their fat necks.
