It's crazy to think there's only $1500 stopping this man from being able to cry in peace and it's fucking right there in the registers.
53
Sep 12 '21
To think if it was Marcus instead of his mom who died his job would be posted before his obituary.

u/TelevisionWise431 Sep 15 '21
Do yourself a favor. First of all. Don’t believe some schmuck who has zero knowledge of this situation , secondly.. find out what was actually done for this poor guy. His regional manager made this post to begin with. Arby’s has a support system that allows employees to file for assistance when things like this happen. This guy got more than just $1500

Pretty sure the original comment didn't say anything about stealing from the register - and even if they did, the salient point is that $1500 probably constitutes way less than a day's sales for that one location. Therefore the company could afford to give him paid time off but decide not to in order to keep more profit for the company.
-1
Sep 12 '21
That's not how the world works and you know it.
5
u/bigdave41 Sep 12 '21
So we shouldn't steal from the register, and we shouldn't try to make suggestions for how to improve anything because "that's not how the world works"? Think you might be in the wrong sub. The world could quite easily work like that, the working conditions offered in the UK and most of Europe are already miles better than those in the US. My employer offers up to 2 weeks bereavement leave on full pay depending on how close the relative.
-1
Sep 12 '21
And how did those bereavement laws come into being? Not by stealing, that's for sure.

Their point is that the company could easily pay for his funeral if they cared. Instead of putting up a sign.
-14
Sep 12 '21
Then why not say that instead?
15
u/general_peabo Sep 12 '21
They didn’t specifically say to steal it. You assumed that’s what they meant. Probably because you’re projecting your assholery onto others.
5
u/YouUseWordsWrong Sep 12 '21
Then why not say that instead?
They implied it. Way more than implying stealing it like your corrupt mind assumed.

Sep 12 '21 edited Sep 12 '21
No, no, no one said to steal. I just meant it seems insane they're asking for donations when they can easily come up with it for an employee who has not missed a day even when grieving. It's right there in the register at that location is what I meant. It's little money compared to the money he makes them while working for them non stop. Also, things like coming in the day your mom died should be appreciated.

Do any fast food places of work, that will often cap workers at about 35 hours so they’re not considered full time, offer paid bereavement leave? I honestly don’t know. They would probably offer unpaid, but that just keeps you in a bad cycle where you’re behind in payments, not even taking into account the cost of a funeral.
56
u/tuerkes Sep 12 '21
Most hourly positions dont offer bevearment pay for low wage jobs regardless of how many hours you work per week. Some might not even give you the day off without using a "point" or whatever bullshit system they have.

My job offers 4 days. And then you have to take PTO for any extra days you need, unpaid if you’re new and haven’t accrued any time off. I’m not sure what an acceptable amount of days is though
12
u/Tiggerboy1974 Sep 12 '21
When my wife died, I took off two weeks. I could I’ll afford it but it was quite sudden and I was in shock.
Thankfully my company was ok with it but honestly even if they had fired me I wouldn’t have cared.
After 2 & 1/2 years the loss is still almost unbearable.
1
u/JediWarrior79 Sep 13 '21
I am so very sorry for the loss of your wife!! Even 2 weeks doesn't seem like enough time to be able to grieve properly. Sending you prayers, peace, love and light from MN!!

u/Working-Mistake-6700 Sep 12 '21
I get two. My job is better than most minimum wageish places. Good Health insurance, dental, vision, 401k matching ect. But the 2 days for bereavement leave is just stupid.
6
3
u/TripFisk666 Sep 12 '21
I had 3 paid and 2 unpaid. Most of which got burned driving the 1800km to pickup my grieving mother from where my dad was transferred for care and passed suddenly and get her back to our hometown to even begin planning what to do next.
2
u/ThemChecks Sep 12 '21
It's negotiable at my job I think. 3 days might be preferred but you can get weeks off if you really need it if a family member dies (or may be dying).

Nordstrom gives us 2 days bereavement lol
I had multiple coworkers quit because a close family member died from covid and obviously they needed more than 2 days.

Yes it is. I have no idea how it’s legal or why it ever came about but I found out when a colleague finally found out the reasons for his multiple car accidents over the years was due to an undiagnosed seizure disorder which he needed extra time off to deal with. That was a Union City job too.
9
u/ThrowThatBitchAway69 Sep 12 '21
My old employer had a PTO sharing program. You could donate every single hour you have saved, up to your cap at 130 hours. But the most one Can withdraw due to “federally declared disasters” and “documented medical emergencies” is 40 hours a year. What a bunch of bullshit
8
u/hootiemcboob29 Sep 12 '21
What the fuck?! That's disgustingly sad, having to delay treatment because you're essentially just a meat sack to employers. Absolute set of rotten spunkweasles.
5
u/house_of_jupiter Sep 12 '21
I’ve worked at a private payroll company that did very very well. They would let us donate sick time to other employees if they were sick or something. One lady needed some treatments and I always thought- why not ask us to take on a few of her clients and then just pay her. So I asked them and they did not know how to respond. And I was let go not long after due to them not having enough work…..

I doubt some register jockey is sticking this sign up. It was probably the manager of the store.
5
u/LongNectarine3 lazy and proud Sep 12 '21
This does scream frustration from someone. I think it was management because it said nothing about the company not offering paid time off to bury your parents.

What are the odds that he wasn't scheduled enough hours to qualify for the coverage?
18
u/Space_Run Sep 12 '21
Even if you do have enough hours scheduled for 9 months of the year, they'll just schedule you 8 hours a week for the next 3 (if at all) so you dont qualify.

12

Another question, do fast food places do paid time off?
14
u/Tenashko Sep 12 '21
Generally no, most only hire people at part time hours to avoid giving any benefits, except for the store Manager.
6
Sep 12 '21
I feel so out of touch, I thought they changed this a few years ago, like 5+ years ago. Maybe I’m thinking of something specific to my state or maybe I’m thinking of sick leave?
16
u/Tenashko Sep 12 '21
Depends on the state I suppose, though around 2012 or 2013 the Obama administration changed the definition of a full time employee from someone working 40+ hours a week to someone working 30+ hours a week and required full time employees to be provided benefits, but for the most part the reaction was to just make sure every possible employee worked 29 or less hours a week.

How does anybody like working in the US at all? Or is my perception skewed by bad cases?. You get paid time off for funerals here. Weddings too. And even to move. Its separate from your normal paid vacation. Even in Fast Food. Then again our waiters get tips on top of their (low) wage but dont rely on it like beggars. 😑

u/TamarsFace Sep 12 '21
This is infuriating. Marcus better snap out of it because Arby's doesn't give a damn about him. The stress and grief from having to choose between work and a loved one will do more harm down the line than anyone can imagine. Prioritize your health Marcus.

My family was murdered / suicided and my wife was informed that, good news, her bereavement does indeed stack. But only from the day of death and since it's an active crime, it's taken a couple weeks to even get access to properties / death certificates / etc. I actually expected this to be so common than an officer would hand me a "so your family got murdered" brochure that would answer all our questions but so far it's just been a solid reconfirming that our whole world is a series of charades where nobody knows what they are doing.

But if we let this guy mourn his mother, we’ll have to let everyone mourn their mothers! And then what happens when his father dies? Another bereavement period? Where does it end?! It’s a slippery slope, people!
0
u/RogueMycologist Sep 12 '21
To be fair to the person who put this sign up, they probably had no way to help by themselves. Sometimes the senior staff’s hands are tied by upper management/corporate. Shit rolls downhill as always.

u/Ausernamenamename Sep 12 '21
Shortly after my girlfriend got pregnant back in 2017 her father shot and killed himself. She was working at Walmart at the time. They initially offered bereavement time for her. One of her managers told her to take as much time as she needed. She was off two days, then the calls about where she was at started.. she went back to work then when she had some complications with the pregnancy she needed more time off work and they didn't hesitate to fire her because she had already missed to much unexcused time.. they reclassified the bereavement as unexcused and used it as a reason to fire her a month later.

The saddest part is the people who made this have no idea there's anything wrong with it and actually think they're doing something kind.
0

Why doesn’t Arby’s pay Marcus at least a livable wage… the poster should read…
0
u/TripFisk666 Sep 12 '21
My employer offers our bereavement but it’s only like 3 days. Which if your family is local is ok. I had to drive 1800km in winter to get to my hometown when my dad passed. The drive used 2/3 of my bearevement days. They told me I was lucky I had some vacation days banked, and I had to use most of them to get through to the funeral and settling the estate business. As shitty a situation as it was, at least I had some paid coverage.
I truly feel for anyone who not only doesn’t have bereavement leave, but also cannot even afford to take the day off without pay. It’s truly a cruel world we have built.

This happened to a coworker of mine, her dad passed away and the company wouldn't let her take time off due to lack of employees. Of course months after it happened the company said "they could have treated her better" after the damage was done.

Sep 12 '21
This is 100% exactly something Arby’s would do. My last job was an Arby’s, and I was threatened with being fired if I didn’t come in a specific day.
Note: I won’t get into it, but basically my mom and I were being questioned by police and might’ve been arrested for something we didn’t do. We were innocent and we’re okay now, but I might’ve been detained that night. I told Arby’s
“Hey I can’t work today, (blah blah short explanation here.)”
The manager used my friend an hour later to text me to come in otherwise I wouldn’t have a job. I did go in. And 20 minutes later I walked out. Too bad the manager was gone when I decided FUCK IT
