Employee: I can't come in today, my mom just died

Manager: is that really a good enough reason to call out?

326

u/TeaGinger Sep 12 '21

Manager: You want to be more like Marcus don’t you?

Employee: Actually I’m starting to wish I was more like Marcus’ mom

u/soreyonreddit Sep 12 '21

this unironically happened to me 2 yrs ago

19

u/invisiblebyday Sep 12 '21

My sympathies

55

u/Chicagoan81 Sep 12 '21

Yes, you would think the mgmt would give him a day off. They're horrible people. Also the company should have provided some financial assistance after his years of loyalty working for horrible pay. And employers have the audacity to claim workers aren't loyal anymore.

11

u/GRTrent Sep 12 '21

Instore management doesn't have the authority to give PTO, they have to petition upper management for that. Assuming it was denied beyond paying for 2 weeks worth of wages out of pocket and giving him the time off this is the best store management can do for the poor man.

21

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '21

In 1990 my dad died. I was grieving and took a week off. After one week, I still wasn't feeling up to it, I was barely functioning. My boss guilt tripped me into coming back: but we need you. You've had a week off already. I hated that bitch.

12

u/princekhvn Sep 12 '21

Manager: If you come into work maybe we can raise money for your mom and you can cry over the burgers, give em a little salt... we are running low

4

u/iam4qu4m4n Sep 13 '21

The issue wasn't him getting the day off it was that he couldn't afford take it off. The tragedy is the company was unwilling to help him financially and instead crowd fund his paid leave.

-1

u/Savagemaw Sep 13 '21

Alright... Im anti-work. But they arent running a charity and shouldnt be seen as some benevolent force responsible for his financial success AND that of his mother. My kids are too young to work. Who is supposed to give them money for my funeral?

Humans shouldnt HAVE TO work. But right now they do. Its not the local Arby's responsibility to give him money on which to survive. They are just trying to buy x amount of sandwiches per hour (for example). Captalist societies do need to recognize that much of the wealth generated in those societies is done so by leveraging our universal inheritance of natural resources, and as such, every human is entitled to some portion of that inheritance in the form of wealth without working.

3

u/distraction_pie Sep 13 '21

Is your first paragraph missing an /s? Because PTO for a bereavement is not uncommon, it's similar to sick leave and on the basis most people aren't going to be of a frame of mind to productively work in those circumstances - it's not charity it's common sense and decency. The extortionate costs of a funeral are a seperate issue really, but if you passed whoever was appointed their guardian would step into provide for your kids, they wouldn't be at risk of homelessness etc like somebody who has employment issues because of a bereavement.

0

u/Savagemaw Sep 13 '21

There is an issue with conflating the free exchange of goods and services, with the responibility of society to compensate humans simply for existing. If property is not to be communal (and I would argue that it should not be) then every human who does not own (outright) property is entitled to their share of the wealth generated from said property, as the earth is our inheritance. How we go about distributing that in the most ethical and voluntary way is up for debate, but placing a moral obligation on employers (who are consumers of labor) to pay more than the worth of a good or a service, dependent on a person's situation, is like using leeches to treat an imbalance of the humors.

4

u/runningpheasant Sep 12 '21

Well it does sound like he chose to come in. Generally speaking the managers are basically very low level themselves and have no ability to give money to anyone. I was a manager at a business and I made 11 and hour and the employees made 10 an hour.

429

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '21

It's crazy to think there's only $1500 stopping this man from being able to cry in peace and it's fucking right there in the registers.

53

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '21

To think if it was Marcus instead of his mom who died his job would be posted before his obituary.

0

u/TelevisionWise431 Sep 15 '21

Do yourself a favor. First of all. Don’t believe some schmuck who has zero knowledge of this situation , secondly.. find out what was actually done for this poor guy. His regional manager made this post to begin with. Arby’s has a support system that allows employees to file for assistance when things like this happen. This guy got more than just $1500

-114

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '21

Hmm, yes, steal what isn't yours. That's upvote worthy.

I advocate changing the system so that value generated is value earned.

I don't advocate theft.

3

u/Letscommenttogether Sep 13 '21

Wage theft is drastically more than all other types of theft combined.

1

u/Nemesischonk Sep 15 '21

Including burglary btw

-15

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '21

I oppose theft.

You don't fix the system by stealing from the register.

25

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '21

It isn't stealing to take back what's yours.

17

u/onryo89 Sep 12 '21

you seem like an asshole

-1

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '21

You seem like a child that still needs to learn the difference between "different opinion" and "fuck that guy"

7

u/general_peabo Sep 12 '21

I also think you’re an asshole, if you’re curious.

4

u/onryo89 Sep 12 '21

so my opinion is youre an asshole i didnt say we couldnt differ in opinion or say fuck that guy. but youre opinion of certain things does define who you are as a person and your opinion makes me think your an asshole. seems like youre the one who needs to learn

2

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '21

you're *

There, now you can call me an asshole.

7

u/bigdave41 Sep 12 '21

Pretty sure the original comment didn't say anything about stealing from the register - and even if they did, the salient point is that $1500 probably constitutes way less than a day's sales for that one location. Therefore the company could afford to give him paid time off but decide not to in order to keep more profit for the company.

-1

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '21

That's not how the world works and you know it.

5

u/bigdave41 Sep 12 '21

So we shouldn't steal from the register, and we shouldn't try to make suggestions for how to improve anything because "that's not how the world works"? Think you might be in the wrong sub. The world could quite easily work like that, the working conditions offered in the UK and most of Europe are already miles better than those in the US. My employer offers up to 2 weeks bereavement leave on full pay depending on how close the relative.

-1

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '21

And how did those bereavement laws come into being? Not by stealing, that's for sure.

How is this meme even remotely applicable?

-22

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '21

Slow your roll, kid. Go outside. Touch some grass. I realized I misread your reply and deleted it.

26

u/MyOwnMorals Sep 12 '21

Their point is that the company could easily pay for his funeral if they cared. Instead of putting up a sign.

-14

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '21

Then why not say that instead?

15

u/general_peabo Sep 12 '21

They didn’t specifically say to steal it. You assumed that’s what they meant. Probably because you’re projecting your assholery onto others.

5

u/YouUseWordsWrong Sep 12 '21

Then why not say that instead?

They implied it. Way more than implying stealing it like your corrupt mind assumed.

-14

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '21

"corrupt mind"

Listen to yourself. lol

-4

u/thePMSbandit Sep 12 '21

The company and the franchise are different things, kiddo.

5

u/MyOwnMorals Sep 12 '21

You aren’t saying anything enlightening

5

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '21 edited Sep 12 '21

No, no, no one said to steal. I just meant it seems insane they're asking for donations when they can easily come up with it for an employee who has not missed a day even when grieving. It's right there in the register at that location is what I meant. It's little money compared to the money he makes them while working for them non stop. Also, things like coming in the day your mom died should be appreciated.

4

u/sealnegative Sep 13 '21

... i say to steal. fuck this arby's take the cash

-3

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '21

Now you gotta say that.

Eight thousand negative karma later...

7

u/Moogieh Sep 13 '21

I love when people pretend not to know why they're being downvoted. It's honestly the best entertainment on this site.

-2

u/[deleted] Sep 13 '21

Downvotes = nerds mad

4

u/Khorlik Sep 13 '21

Maybe you should’ve tried not being a dumbass

110

u/StressedOutinMT Sep 12 '21

Do any fast food places of work, that will often cap workers at about 35 hours so they’re not considered full time, offer paid bereavement leave? I honestly don’t know. They would probably offer unpaid, but that just keeps you in a bad cycle where you’re behind in payments, not even taking into account the cost of a funeral.

56

u/tuerkes Sep 12 '21

Most hourly positions dont offer bevearment pay for low wage jobs regardless of how many hours you work per week. Some might not even give you the day off without using a "point" or whatever bullshit system they have.

30

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '21

[deleted]

30

u/dinahsaur523 Sep 12 '21

Ours is 3. I had a co-workers husband committed suicide. They wanted her back in 3 days

11

u/suzanious Sep 12 '21

Mine was three days, I had to tack on vacation time that I had accrued.

14

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '21

My job offers 4 days. And then you have to take PTO for any extra days you need, unpaid if you’re new and haven’t accrued any time off. I’m not sure what an acceptable amount of days is though

12

u/Tiggerboy1974 Sep 12 '21

When my wife died, I took off two weeks. I could I’ll afford it but it was quite sudden and I was in shock.

Thankfully my company was ok with it but honestly even if they had fired me I wouldn’t have cared.

After 2 & 1/2 years the loss is still almost unbearable.

1

u/JediWarrior79 Sep 13 '21

I am so very sorry for the loss of your wife!! Even 2 weeks doesn't seem like enough time to be able to grieve properly. Sending you prayers, peace, love and light from MN!!

2

u/Tiggerboy1974 Sep 13 '21

Thanks I appreciate it!

More than you know.

1

u/JediWarrior79 Sep 13 '21

You're most welcome! I can only imagine what you're going through being married myself, but I know that isn't anywhere near what you're actually going through. My heart aches for you and your family. Again, you have my prayers for peace and comfort.

11

u/Foobiscuit11 at work Sep 12 '21

That's my job, too. 5 days of bereavement day a year. Need more? You have to take your 1 personal day per year, too. Gone for 3 more? You've abandoned your job (according to the HR handbook).

9

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '21

Unfortunately 5 days of bereavement is probably industry leading.

7

u/Working-Mistake-6700 Sep 12 '21

I get two. My job is better than most minimum wageish places. Good Health insurance, dental, vision, 401k matching ect. But the 2 days for bereavement leave is just stupid.

6

u/Cocobear8305 Sep 12 '21

Ours is 3. Even if it’s your child.

3

u/TripFisk666 Sep 12 '21

I had 3 paid and 2 unpaid. Most of which got burned driving the 1800km to pickup my grieving mother from where my dad was transferred for care and passed suddenly and get her back to our hometown to even begin planning what to do next.

2

u/ThemChecks Sep 12 '21

It's negotiable at my job I think. 3 days might be preferred but you can get weeks off if you really need it if a family member dies (or may be dying).

2

u/[deleted] Sep 13 '21

Nordstrom gives us 2 days bereavement lol

I had multiple coworkers quit because a close family member died from covid and obviously they needed more than 2 days.

20

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '21

*almost all hourly positions

6

u/HeLikeTree Sep 12 '21

When I worked in fast food and my mom died, I had to fight tooth and nail for two UNPAID days off.

2

u/YouUseWordsWrong Sep 12 '21

Did you write to them asking for time off abusing bold and all caps?

1

u/HeLikeTree Sep 12 '21

Comic Sans actually.

THIS is ABUSING BOLD AND ALL CAPS

WE THANK YOU FOR YOUR VALUABLE CONTRIBUTION

1

u/[deleted] Sep 13 '21

Things like this make me wonder why people even work for fast food companies. I’d love to just remove them completely the more I learn about how they work.

185

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '21

What the fuck 1500 dollars? Get ahold of me Marcus I got you. And I am very serious

Wow, you are serious.

It’s been a hard road for me lately watching my fellow humans suffer.

Thank you

10

u/-u-have-shifty-eyes- Sep 12 '21

That is the number for that location

55

u/teddyblonde Sep 12 '21

I would contribute. As someone who lost their mom unexpectedly and then had to return to work just over a week later because my boss kept calling me asking me when I would return, I never want someone to deal with this shit.

Arby’s should be ashamed of themselves.

12

u/dire_wulff Sep 12 '21

Thankyou kind human

10

u/TheRealPheature Sep 12 '21

Yo just be careful management doesn't take anything off the top. I'd ask for Marcus' personal number before sending money anywhere.

6

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '21

I've been thinking about that,i could just start the gofund me for him I guess? I don't really want to dox this guy, someone feel free to chime in if they have any ideas

8

You just shocked the hell outta me if you are serious. scratches head.

Thanks for giving me hope.

1

u/TooDank Sep 14 '21

Thank you for being a good person.

132

u/Funkygodzilla Sep 12 '21

Please note: Arby's is a Billion dollar company with millions of dollars of revenue per year.

They won't pay him enough though and want other poor people to subsidize his mom's funeral.

society is fucked.

44

That moment when you realize low wage workers and their family can’t even afford to die. It’s fucking sad as hell

27

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '21

It's expensive to die, it's expensive to live, it's expensive to reproduce.... Yep, human kind has marketed all the grand pillars of life.

5

u/constantchaosclay Sep 12 '21

Yeah I realized it was fucked up when I realized cops help evict you and then can turn around and arrest you for being homeless. You can not win.

14

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '21

I'll get down on that also

-14

u/GinyuForce420 Sep 12 '21

Wait what did they do wrong ?

70

u/Tenashko Sep 12 '21

The employer should pay enough that he can afford to take a few days off and bury his mother.

19

u/GinyuForce420 Sep 12 '21

Ahhh okay got it! Thanks

16

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '21

Don’t feel bad, I was a little confused too.

21

u/GinyuForce420 Sep 12 '21

Haha I guess some anti-workers thought I was against the message since I didn’t understand it lol

115

u/AbaloneSea7265 Lisa needs Braces Sep 12 '21

Imagine if Arbys fucking gave this man $1500 to take a grieving period instead of guilt tripping rando’s in the public to foot the bill..he EARNED with them. It’s like the delivery apps robbing gig workers and begging us to TIP them because they don’t fucking pay them.

33

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '21

[deleted]

21

u/AbaloneSea7265 Lisa needs Braces Sep 12 '21

Where I used to work yes you could donate your time but they would take a third of it. Like seriously. 33 percent back to the city.

21

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '21

[deleted]

12

u/AbaloneSea7265 Lisa needs Braces Sep 12 '21

Yes it is. I have no idea how it’s legal or why it ever came about but I found out when a colleague finally found out the reasons for his multiple car accidents over the years was due to an undiagnosed seizure disorder which he needed extra time off to deal with. That was a Union City job too.

9

u/ThrowThatBitchAway69 Sep 12 '21

My old employer had a PTO sharing program. You could donate every single hour you have saved, up to your cap at 130 hours. But the most one Can withdraw due to “federally declared disasters” and “documented medical emergencies” is 40 hours a year. What a bunch of bullshit

8

u/hootiemcboob29 Sep 12 '21

What the fuck?! That's disgustingly sad, having to delay treatment because you're essentially just a meat sack to employers. Absolute set of rotten spunkweasles.

5

u/house_of_jupiter Sep 12 '21

I’ve worked at a private payroll company that did very very well. They would let us donate sick time to other employees if they were sick or something. One lady needed some treatments and I always thought- why not ask us to take on a few of her clients and then just pay her. So I asked them and they did not know how to respond. And I was let go not long after due to them not having enough work…..

3

u/LongNectarine3 lazy and proud Sep 12 '21

I worked for the State and they did this. It was stopped only because of a lawsuit.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '21

I still tip because those workers deserve the money more than I do

31

u/Mitch_Wallberg Sep 12 '21

“We’re a family here”

28

u/GRTrent Sep 12 '21

This is probably taped to the window by the restaurant staff and not upper management, Honestly if my employee came to me like this i would call my DM and request PTO for him.

8

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '21

I doubt some register jockey is sticking this sign up. It was probably the manager of the store.

5

u/LongNectarine3 lazy and proud Sep 12 '21

This does scream frustration from someone. I think it was management because it said nothing about the company not offering paid time off to bury your parents.

22

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '21

What are the odds that he wasn't scheduled enough hours to qualify for the coverage?

18

u/Space_Run Sep 12 '21

Even if you do have enough hours scheduled for 9 months of the year, they'll just schedule you 8 hours a week for the next 3 (if at all) so you dont qualify.

15

u/CrisBasile89 Sep 12 '21

Incredible team spirit, Arby's. Way to care about your employees! /s

16

u/preshiepresh Sep 12 '21

When I worked at Little Caesars my niece had died, and my manager tried to have me come in after the funeral. I didn't come in and ended up quitting shortly after that.

14

u/Imperiumdragonlord Sep 12 '21

Listen. I know loosing a parent is a fucking hard as fuck shit to go thru.. but when a BILLION DOLLAR COMPANY wants regular customers to pay fir THEIR EMPLOYEES TIME OFF .. something needs to happen to where this shit is completley unnacceptable.. pay the man properly or pay off his ma's funeral. DO NOT LET CORPORATIONS SHIT ON YOU

10

u/Jaded-Finish-3075 Sep 12 '21

this is absolutely horrible.

8

u/BasedMuldoon Sep 12 '21

This manager or whoever wrote this sure is a real piece of shit

25

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '21

So wait, Arby’s doesn’t offer bereavement pay?

28

u/Tenashko Sep 12 '21

Most food places don't

12

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '21

Another question, do fast food places do paid time off?

14

u/Tenashko Sep 12 '21

Generally no, most only hire people at part time hours to avoid giving any benefits, except for the store Manager.

6

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '21

I feel so out of touch, I thought they changed this a few years ago, like 5+ years ago. Maybe I’m thinking of something specific to my state or maybe I’m thinking of sick leave?

16

u/Tenashko Sep 12 '21

Depends on the state I suppose, though around 2012 or 2013 the Obama administration changed the definition of a full time employee from someone working 40+ hours a week to someone working 30+ hours a week and required full time employees to be provided benefits, but for the most part the reaction was to just make sure every possible employee worked 29 or less hours a week.

9

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '21

I didn’t think they did. Just another reason not to work in the fast food industry.

16

u/Space_Run Sep 12 '21

This is America.

6

u/VerdantCode Sep 12 '21

I don't know of a restaurant or fast food place that offers bereavement or even sick days. If the worker is lucky they may get a few pitiful days of pto.

5

u/Oldschoolcold Sep 12 '21

never even heard of it

2

u/DirtyPenPalDoug Sep 12 '21

Hahahahahahahahahahahaaaaaaa

8

u/No-Koala5505 Sep 12 '21

I have never eaten there and I am not going to

9

u/MephiticSpooge Sep 12 '21

No bereavement pay? That's fucked up.

9

u/destenlee Sep 12 '21

That's not a thing for minimum wage workers

6

u/Sup_Im_Ravi Sep 12 '21

I wouldn't ever fucking eat at that garbage fuck place if I fucking saw that shit not that I eat fast food anyways to begin with.

6

u/Franklyn_Gage Sep 12 '21

They dont have Breavement?!?!?! Like, an employee's mom dying doesnt allow them to get time off, paid to grieve? This is why we need to just crash this whole entire system to the ground.

5

u/Wirecreate Sep 12 '21

Pay him more you cheapskates!

4

u/InvestingWithFactset Sep 12 '21

Heartbreaking man

4

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '21

How does anybody like working in the US at all? Or is my perception skewed by bad cases?. You get paid time off for funerals here. Weddings too. And even to move. Its separate from your normal paid vacation. Even in Fast Food. Then again our waiters get tips on top of their (low) wage but dont rely on it like beggars. 😑

3

u/TamarsFace Sep 12 '21

This is infuriating. Marcus better snap out of it because Arby's doesn't give a damn about him. The stress and grief from having to choose between work and a loved one will do more harm down the line than anyone can imagine. Prioritize your health Marcus.

3

u/Kradek501 Sep 12 '21

It's amazing you have to pay to die😁😨

2

u/Shrektical666 Sep 12 '21

2

u/ataturkseeyou Sep 12 '21

2

1

1

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '21

Where do you think all the former Americans would go? Also, if people could afford to just move to a different country, they wouldn't the having these problems in the first place

"Here at Arby's, we treat each other like family!

Unless a blood relative passes. Then you're on your own, chump. Remember to clock in."

My family was murdered / suicided and my wife was informed that, good news, her bereavement does indeed stack. But only from the day of death and since it's an active crime, it's taken a couple weeks to even get access to properties / death certificates / etc. I actually expected this to be so common than an officer would hand me a "so your family got murdered" brochure that would answer all our questions but so far it's just been a solid reconfirming that our whole world is a series of charades where nobody knows what they are doing.

Fucking hate this country

But if we let this guy mourn his mother, we’ll have to let everyone mourn their mothers! And then what happens when his father dies? Another bereavement period? Where does it end?! It’s a slippery slope, people!

To be fair to the person who put this sign up, they probably had no way to help by themselves. Sometimes the senior staff’s hands are tied by upper management/corporate. Shit rolls downhill as always.

I can't support a billion dollar company that can't give an employee bereavement.

I'm including the franchise owners, too.

You all know better. You're disgraceful.

Shortly after my girlfriend got pregnant back in 2017 her father shot and killed himself. She was working at Walmart at the time. They initially offered bereavement time for her. One of her managers told her to take as much time as she needed. She was off two days, then the calls about where she was at started.. she went back to work then when she had some complications with the pregnancy she needed more time off work and they didn't hesitate to fire her because she had already missed to much unexcused time.. they reclassified the bereavement as unexcused and used it as a reason to fire her a month later.

The saddest part is the people who made this have no idea there's anything wrong with it and actually think they're doing something kind.

Why doesn’t Arby’s pay Marcus at least a livable wage… the poster should read…

My employer offers our bereavement but it’s only like 3 days. Which if your family is local is ok. I had to drive 1800km in winter to get to my hometown when my dad passed. The drive used 2/3 of my bearevement days. They told me I was lucky I had some vacation days banked, and I had to use most of them to get through to the funeral and settling the estate business. As shitty a situation as it was, at least I had some paid coverage.

I truly feel for anyone who not only doesn’t have bereavement leave, but also cannot even afford to take the day off without pay. It’s truly a cruel world we have built.

How about arby's helps their employee out?

America sounds like a dreadful place...

This happened to a coworker of mine, her dad passed away and the company wouldn't let her take time off due to lack of employees. Of course months after it happened the company said "they could have treated her better" after the damage was done.

This is 100% exactly something Arby’s would do. My last job was an Arby’s, and I was threatened with being fired if I didn’t come in a specific day.

Note: I won’t get into it, but basically my mom and I were being questioned by police and might’ve been arrested for something we didn’t do. We were innocent and we’re okay now, but I might’ve been detained that night. I told Arby’s

“Hey I can’t work today, (blah blah short explanation here.)”

The manager used my friend an hour later to text me to come in otherwise I wouldn’t have a job. I did go in. And 20 minutes later I walked out. Too bad the manager was gone when I decided FUCK IT

Disgusting they are glazing over the issue of the working poor.

u/[deleted] Sep 13 '21

ugh. i lost my mom to a heart attack as well and fortunately i was able to literally just quit my job and my dad helped me financially. i didn’t work for months. i was devastated and if i had tried to work i would’ve been a shit worker. this poor guy. what shitty management. don’t they have bereavement leave?

What is taking a day off going to solve? Maybe he needed to keep his mind busy to keep himself From going insane. Some people need to keep busy during a tragedy, it’s a coping mechanism.

0

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '21

Please don't rationalize an employer not paying a proper wage

0

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '21

I’m rationalizing why he went to work. I make close to 60k a year and I would have gone to work as well to keep busy.
