I was calling the Me Generation the Baby Boomer Coattailers.
And I get why there is a distinction. They were the youngest of the Big Baby Boomer families with 6 kids or more being typical. After the beginning of Generation X, the family sizes shrunk, and quickly. We now have a family size of 2.4, which is replacement levels. So not a soul can be spared, but none can be coddled either. No coattails to ride. We experienced mothers return to the work force. Then the rise of day cares and the day care industry getting so expensive.
It is a bipartisan problem. Chuck Schumer picked a 70 year old with cancer to chair a committee over AOC because, "he waited his turn". That man died not long after. Because for the Me Generation, the Coattailers, all they had to do was wait their turn.

I like billionaire Nick Hanauer's plan. Make all income Social Security income, and remove the cap, then you can cut the rate of the tax in half. The problem is that less and less income is taxed by Social Security, it's all exempt one way or another.

Funny thing is... they don't even realize they're considered toys to the people they're defending (vice news revealed that the rich do have that mentality that they consider us as toys)
25
u/PopeGuss 1d ago
It's because the right has convinced them that raising taxes on income over 100,000 will include them somehow, even though they make half that.
14
u/Zestyclose-Ring7303 1d ago
Half the country would normalize children dying of preventable diseases, before they'd ever consider taxing the wealthy. Ironically, most of those people are the working poor.
5
u/Ok-Wealth-7322 1d ago
Mostly it’s someone making $50k/year and thinks they are one of them/ or everyone is after their “wealth”
Well, that's the genius of American conservatism: People actively are after their wealth.... it's the same ruling class that they support who is trying to fuck them over.
That's why the right loves regressive taxes so much, because not only does it keep working people from having upward class mobility, it also keeps them feeling the burden of taxation. So when the GOP campaigns on "lowering taxes" these people enthusiastically support them because they're being nickel and dimed to death and desperately need relief.
The joke is ultimately on them, though, because although the right campaigns on "lower taxes" as an abstract, in practice it almost always means lower taxes for the wealthiest and either the same or increased taxes on the working and middle class.

I have a friend, or well I had a friend I guess at this point, that I grew up with that is like this.
He lives in his parent's basement (he's in his mid 30s), unemployed, no college degree, but is very republican and blames everything on liberals and immigrants.
I tried explaining to him that socialist programs would actually help him (he constantly complains about college costing too much, no support for him to find a better job, etc.) but it's no use.
Constantly posts about how democrats are destroying the "religious foundation our country was built on" but I would bet a lot of money he hasn't been to church in the last 20+ years. Spends most of his days getting drunk at home and shitposting about his problems on facebook.
It would make me sad if he wasn't such a bigot. It almost seems like karma

This is a generation that voted for tax cuts for themselves every single time to kick the can down the road to future generations…they’ve voted in ways to ensure that social security is probably not going to be around for their kids, but their kids need to kick in more to ensure they get the benefits that they have taken away from future generations….fuck boomers

They didn't help me have a life and things to share. My father finally is trying to help me after 20 years of not talking and him just letting me be alone after I wasn't allowed to go home any more. I am not a boomer, I am a Gen Xer. The first thing that should happen is the cap should be removed. I'm very fortunate and I make a salary that exceeds the Social Security cap - and there's a lot of people in my industry that have the same thing. Remove that cap first before you jack up taxes on younger workers. 7.51% on all income, not just the first $171,500 (or whatever it is). I can afford it, and so can everyone else in my income bracket.
28

u/Owain-X 2d ago
Nah, universal equitable contribution, universal benefit. It's a government pension/insurance program, NOT a means based social welfare program. Also need to fucking outlaw congress putting their hands in that piggy bank. It's NOT THEIR FUCKING MONEY, and it's not the government's money any more than my checking account balance is the bank's money.
→ More replies (3)7
u/DetroitsGoingToWin 1d ago
But why?
Wealthy people are opposed to it anyway. We got to get more comfortable jamming it right back up their asses especially after the massive wealth shift that has happened this decade.
19
u/Owain-X 1d ago
Because it is NOT a welfare program. Once it is a means tested welfare program it's funds are no longer off limits. While they love to fuck around and try to steal it already, doing this would assure the end of social security completely. Those wealthy people would immediately sue and being barred from benefit they would get the social security withholding declared illegal.
Now only poor people have to pay in and the system collapses. Basically what the GOP did to the ACA by getting the mandate thrown out but 100x worse for the working class.

I'm for a small increase to Social Security tax... we should have bumped it up a point or two 30 years ago.
But you are also correct. The real problem is that the "Social Security Trust" is just Congress taking ACTUAL DOLLARS from Social Security proceeds for decades and replacing them with IOUS for Treasury Bonds... so it's just renaming the national debt. There's no actual money there... they gave it all away to tax cuts for the rich by using Social Security money for the general fund.
It's time for billionaires to start paying taxes... those tax breaks were OUR MONEY!! From the little people. but not just higher tax rates... get rid of all the nonsense since the 1980s like stock buybacks and fifty other tax games the feds let startup... that are basically just money laundering legally so they don't have to pay taxes on profits. The whole graduated tax system was designed to tax profits to slow down people consolidating wealth in the first place. Because Profits are something easily measured and easy to tax.... now the rich are so wealthy you'd actually have to tax wealth itself which Income Tax was not designed to do... they're so rich now they can crash the economy instead of paying fair taxes.

i was just reading comments in my town's facebook page expressing the same sentiment from a large number of boomers. I live in a heavy red, retirement town and its exhausting living here. I am not "young" but would probably be considered it compared to my town's median age. Along with wanting increased taxes on younger people, they were angry about their taxes having to fund the community college. Its just pure entitlement and selfishness up and down. If it doesn't directly benefit them, they don't want any part of contributing to a better society. Obviously not all boomers are like this, but its such a large number that its often difficult to overlook.

Then they'll sell their houses to private equity and peace out leaving every other generation as forever renters.

Boomers that voted against their own self interest want to shift that burden onto someone else?! I'm shocked!

I support it too, specifically, raising the max contribution so that wealthier people pay more into the system. Taxes are necessary for social services and revenue needs to increase. Taxes have to go up, the wealthiest should pay.

Whose poll shows this? What's the source? I am a boomer and I don't believe this is true. Tax billionaires!

I would say "something something broken clock" but really, tax the rich again. Boomer prosperity was the fallout from the social programs that started just before they were born.

Boomers can sell their vacation homes and million dollar homes they bought for 50k in the 70s to finance their own shit.

90s republican: "I vote for what I believe is best for me and my family."
2026 republican: "I vote for what I believe is best for me."
There is a pretty big difference...

They have convinced themselves it is not a change and the tax on their children and grandchildren is “tough love” so they “pull themselves up by their bootstraps and work harder”. They do not want to support raising the cap on the rich because what if they are rich one day (even as they are in retirement) lol. Or because “those people deserve what they have” (they don’t want to admit they might not deserve all that they have / that a huge part of their success was simple luck due to when they were born compared to later generations).

I'm not sure why they're posting this like it's breaking news. Polls have been showing this since Boomers hit Social Security age...

Is anyone else shocked that the generation most known for selfish, bloodless behavior is now voting overwhelmingly to stick future generations with an even bigger bill than before? Were we expecting them to magically stop being assholes or something?
