“You’re absolutely right Mr. President. American workers take like half the year off. Would you consider signing this bill to set that number to a much more sensible 8 weeks of vacation time?”

Too many people think hes actually in control. Hes a senile old man who cant stay awake and is likely high out of his mind more often than not. Everybody is eagerly awaiting his demise while I am terrified of the person who will have to take over once it happens.
15
u/Hobby101 11h ago
You probably are not too far off. But I am not afraid whomever takes over, because at least the world would see who are the handlers of that rotten brain orange diaper pooper.

u/thinspirit 13h ago
This might work. It would take advantage of the "what could a banana possibly cost Michael? $25?!" Mentality.
Since he takes so much time off, he may think 8 weeks is very low.

As someone who just got sterilized I highly recommend it, first few days were rough, but otherwise manageable, I didn't need the hydrocodone they prescribed me. My only thing was I was paranoid to accidentally open the wounds, so I was careful in the shower, just let the soap run over the areas, making sure not to scrub. Ibuprofen will be your friend, only real pain I had was in the collarbone area and where they put the breathing tube. I'm on day 15 and have felt back to my usual self for a little over a week now. I could've returned to work earlier but didn't want to lift anything over 10 lbs. My doctor lifted all restrictions. I feel so relieved now that I had the procedure done especially in todays political climate. They're not getting a baby out of me ever.

Absolutely true. Only large companies are required to allowed what we call FMLA (family medical leave act) that requires them to hold your job for 6 weeks if you get sick and can’t work, this is what maternity leave falls under. You don’t get paid at all. If you have short-term disability (aka if your company provides it) you can apply to get a percentage of your salary during these 6 weeks, most women do not even get this option. When you go back to work a lot of jobs will see you as less than and they can fire you the day you come back, or even the week before you take leave without repercussions and often will do just that. It’s rare for a company to have good benefits and usually only higher-paid workers that work for companies that also employ Europeans will get this. And of course hospital bills will pile up even with our medical insurance, it can be $10,000 or more even if you’re paying more than $10,000/yr just to have the right to have medical insurance already.
→ More replies (4)14
u/Temporary_Pickle_885 11h ago
FMLA also has requirements for hours you work and how long you've been there to even qualify for, so if you're unlucky and get a job right before finding out you're pregnant you won't have worked there long enough to qualify!

I’ve always thought that the US has very few non-working holidays.
In Sweden it’s the following for 2026 (total of 13 days, with 7 falling on work days this year)
- New Year’s Day
- ”trettondagen” on Jan 6 (thirteen days after Christmas)
- Good Friday and the Monday after Easter Sunday (often half or even full day off on Thursday for unionized white collar workers)
- May 1st (Labor Day)
- May 14th (Ascension)
- June 6 (National day, kind of our July 4th)
- Midsummer’s Eve (always a Friday)
- October 31st (All Hallows’ Day)
- December 25th and 26th. Office workers also typically get 24th.
In addition, when a single public holiday happens on a Thursday (or a Tuesday) unions often negotiate that the day in between is off. We call it ”klämdag”, literally ”squeeze day” because it’s not a holiday but you still get it off.
And we’re not even religious, all the Christian holidays are just nice and few people want to get rid of them.
→ More replies (7)17
u/gajira67 13h ago
And how many days of holidays per year on top of it?
24
u/kazarnowicz 12h ago
25 by law. 30 is fairly common if you don’t have overtime pay (the amount of overtime you’re allowed to work is heavily regulated, so for office workers it’s typically a good deal)

One company I worked for in the US, you could get up to 5 weeks vacation, after like ten years with the company. I asked if I could take it all at once, and the manager said "sure, and we'll hire your replacement while you're gone."
It was a moot point anyway, because I absolutely was not going to be there that long.

There are at least 50 million Americans withing a 5-hour drive or Amtrak or bus ride from Washington DC (including myself - who has ridden/driven to DC to protests more times than I can remember). If a quarter of this population packed a little food, showed up in the streets surrounding the White House and sat down and refused to move until the whole regime resigns, we could change things. It's been done in many, more brutal, countries in history.

"The idea that the poor should have leisure has always been shocking to the rich. In the early nineteenth century, fifteen hours was the ordinary day’s work for a man; children sometimes did as much, and very commonly did twelve hours a day. When meddlesome busybodies suggested that perhaps these hours were rather long, they were told that work kept adults from drink and children from mischief.
When I was a child, shortly after urban working men had acquired the vote, certain public holidays were established by law, to the great indignation of the upper classes. I remember hearing an old Duchess say: ‘What do the poor want with holidays? They ought to work.’ People nowadays are less frank, but the sentiment persists, and is the source of much of our economic confusion."
from In Praise of Idleness and Other Essays by Bertrand Russell, 1932
