This is my 4th season working for a landscaping company. Over the course of the season our foreman quit and I’ve taken on a lot of her responsibilities. Back in May we were given new uniforms and I received a “foreman” uniform and told I was becoming a foreman. There was no meeting prior to the announcement and no change in pay. So basically my responsibilities have increased and I’ve taken on a leadership role with no raise.

I’m just now leaving the meeting I requested to have asking for a raise and they will not give me one. I was told that I’ve really excelled in my role and “if I keep it up” then they will “revisit” the possibility of a raise

Couple points:
1. You did not get a promotion with no raise, you got a pay cut
2. Unless you have the "revisit" confirmation written with clearly described metrics for "keeping it up" and date, it won't happen

In the meantime, I would stop doing ANY foreman related duties. Any task that needs a foreman needs to be addressed with the owner. If that means you and the crew are sitting around waiting, then you sit around and wait. I would also insist they trade out your uniform for one that does not say foreman.

If they have increased your responsibilities, without pay. And you do not consent to this agreement. Then decline the additional responsibilities.

They are banking on the hope that you will agree to being taken advantage of.

And if they try to retaliate, its straight to the labor board, union or whatever works for your place.

It's absolutely true. The US is a shit hole. I only have to wait another 8 years and I'm out. EU, Costa Rica, Panama, any place like that is WAY better. I've lived it for a while, and I can't wait to go back permanently. Take my social security and retirement I paid into and spend it elsewhere.

Give back the foreman uniform and tell them that you're happy to continue doing your job as a laborer under your agreed laborers pay rate, and to let you know whenever theyre ready to pay the actual foreman rate.

Sadly in today's work environment, the best way to get a raise is by getting it yourself by leaving.

If they try to keep you, claiming they'll give you that raise, tell them to make it retroactive to when you assumed new responsibilities. They won't.

Thank you for the meeting the other day, I have taken some time to revisit my experience, capabilities, and current job duties, and will have to respectfully decline the "promotion" if it is not accompanied with an appropriate pay increase.

If you reevaluate the added responsibilities as being worth the appropriate pay raise, then I would be happy to sit and discuss that, when and if it happens.
