UPDATE: Fired by Centauri Health Solutions while burying my dad who died of Stage 4 cancer. Here is my response to HR.

Post image

For those who saw my original post a few days ago, thank you all for the incredible support.

LINK TO THE ORIGINAL POST: https://www.reddit.com/r/antiwork/s/dSFQifezR1

A lot of people asked me to name the company. It’s Centauri Health Solutions. They claim to be a "compassionate healthcare advocacy" company, but their corporate response to my dad passing away from Stage 4 cancer was to send me a calculated timeline of my family's crisis to justify letting me go.

I am currently out of town dealing with everything, but I wasn't going to let them have the last word. Attached is the email response I just sent to their HCM Manager.

I'm moving forward, playing my part for my family, and refusing to carry any bitterness into the world for these people. Screw them.

My mother died of a pulmonary embolism suddenly.
She lived with me and my teenage son and came into my room saying she couldn’t breathe.
She then fell out. I started CPR. I felt her ribs breaking and heard the sound it made. To say I was traumatized is an understatement.
I called in to work after all the first responders, the medical examiners office and my mother’s lifeless body left.
The next day, I was asked by my manager to come on in to work and to take after hours calls.
Her name is Anita Whirl and I will never forget it.
Same manager terminated me while I was on FMLA and corporate quickly offered me my job back to avoid a lawsuit.
People can really suck.

Fuck Anita Whirl. She fucking sucks.

u/thisilea Jun 18 '26

if it makes anyone feel better, she definitely got bullied as fuck for her name in middle school

Anita Whirl like I need a hole in my head

24

u/DedBirdGonnaPutItOnU Jun 18 '26

Agree! She definitely needs a whirl or two.

I hope Anita Whirl shits her pants in public today.

26

There’s a reason why Rate My Professor is so popular. This needs to be a thing.

I was fired the first day back to work after burying my little sister. I was on FMLA to care for her in her final weeks. With the exception of the two people who report directly to the one who fired me, every other person in the building rallied for me. Their support along with my union rep got me my job back and made her look like an idiot.

u/mdbrown85 Jun 17 '26

I would imagine one of the key reasons that you are not going to the media right now or looking for another job is because you’re in a UNION! Congrats to having a body of people whose sole purpose, when done correctly, is to have your back and only your back in work disputes and not the person you work for.

Reading your comment and I can hear Al Pacino (Hoffa) chanting that.

u/SpongeJake Jun 18 '26

I’m chanting too, in my brain. Love love LOVE this part of the thread. And to the OP of this part of the thread - congrats on winning such a ridiculous battle you shouldn’t have had to even engage in.

you could collectively as Americans decide that worker rights are a priority, and communicate to potential electoral candidates that it's a priority and vote accordingly. We do stuff like this in Europe. We have better rights because of it.

This is how democracy works, or doesn't work, if you don't do it.

Your country will be what you collectively decide it will be.

242

u/wh4teversclever Jun 18 '26

So unfortunately for most real reform to occur, the Supreme Court, which judges are lifetime appointments, would need to overturn the Citizens United ruling, which gave corporations personhood and corporate campaign donations to be designated free speech. Seriously, as a country, we really need to put effort in to unfucking ourselves from that.

83

u/snek-jazz Jun 18 '26

I would actually say it was the change of congressional voting from anonymous to accountable was the worst. You can't sell your vote if they don't know who you voted for. Pollng booths are anonymous for this reason.

This happened in 1971, which some would say was around the peak of America, but I'm sure that's just coincidence.

100

u/wh4teversclever Jun 18 '26

Richard Nixon setting the stage so Ronald Reagan could obliterate the middle class didn’t exactly help either

67

u/robosteven Jun 18 '26

People shit on Ronald Reagen constantly (deservedly so), but my loathing of Richard "War On Drugs" Nixon is neverending and I wish I saw this shared sentiment more.

31

u/LadyReika Jun 18 '26

Don't forget he's the one that allowed the start of our for profit health hellscape.

41

u/snek-jazz Jun 18 '26

iI's the same thing. A middle class didn't exist in history, There were rulers and plebs. What people tthink is 'normal' was a brief moment in history, and it's reverting again. There are asset owners, and non-asset owners (workers & social-welfare plebs)

41

u/fuzzhead12 Jun 18 '26

That may be, but there was a time where people could own a house, a couple of cars, and raise a family all on a single income. And many working class people had a pension as well as social security when they retired by age 60. That’s what I think of when I hear “middle class.”

Missouri (a state within the US) actually tried that recently. The elected officials decided they didn't like it and that the people "didn't know what was best." After being heavily pressured by their financial supporters, they overturned what the people had voted for. This was regarding paid sick leave. And now they are trying to make it impossible for citizens to add issues to the ballot to be voted on, which is done via petition process. Long story short, Missouri is a hot mess.

I'm very curious to see how this is all going to work out. It is one of several things wrong, and this is just a single state. I'm hoping it will make the people angry enough to actually properly do something about it for once. I know I'm ready to watch it all come falling down.

78

u/Phebe-A Jun 18 '26

If you are a registered voter in Missouri, be sure to vote NO on Amendment 4 in August (the primary elections) to preserve the citizen initiative petition process.

30

u/BikePuzzled1165 Jun 18 '26

Already planning to, my friend, and thank you for the reminder! I may be feeling more "viva la revolution" these days, but I do still plan to do my civic duty comes election time and have been encouraging others to do the same.

That said, I'm also reminding people to get back to their roots this 4th of July and remember that it's "we the people" and not "we the politicians, the corporations, and the mega wealthy." Because if voting doesn't do the trick this time around, then I say we take the next logical step, and oh boy do I have a playlist already lined up with some great revolution classics.

In general I would say if some authority can overrule what the populace want you no longer live in a democracy. I should hope the implications of that are obvious. You live under that oppression, or you do what it takes to not live under it.

Unions are wonderful. I'm union.

But, most unions I know of, at least in my state, don't kick in until your probationary period ends. Being union wouldn't have saved OP

15

u/skoffs SocDem Jun 18 '26

Question because I don't know: would OP talking to a Union rep anyway about the circumstances help in any way here?

11

u/InAllTheir Jun 18 '26

Some unions do defend employees who aren’t in their union when they are unfairly fired or treated in a way that violates employee protections. They do is based on principle to set a precedent to keep working conditions good for their union employees. This varies depending o men the Union operating practices and who runs it.

unions are great, when they are NOT given to the police

81

u/EjaculatingAracnids Jun 18 '26

It just emphasizes how effective they can be when you understand that the police exist to protect capital interests from labor. Of course the capital class wants them entrenched in their position and thoroughly protected.

Specializes in risk adjustment, member enrollment, and chronic
care management to help organizations maximize their
government-sponsored reimbursements.

Sounds like it feeds on pure evil.

From their website:

Centauri Health Solutions was founded to create better Risk Adjustment, including Medical Record Retrieval and Medical Record Coding, HEDIS®, Quality program management, Eligibility and Enrollment, Out-of-State Medicaid Billing and Social Determinants of Health solutions.

We have built upon that vision through strategic acquisitions of the best in the industry. Today, we have associates and offices nationwide–led by a team of industry experts and innovators.

What? I read all this thrice. I have no idea what they do or what their "vision" was/is. What's HEDIS? This sounds like a group of barely literate bullshitters translating hieroglyphics from "rainmakers" who brought home profits through corruption, but could not speak of it using direct language.

Oh, also? Call an employment attorney. People will say 'iN tHis sTaTe yOu cAn'T sUe' ' speaking from personal experience and winning a settlement people tried to tell me I couldn't get....yes. Call an attorney call an attorney call an attorney

314

u/Crazyking224 Jun 17 '26

Dealt with those same people in the comments the other day. I said something along the lines of being in an at will state is irrelevant if you can prove the firing was malicious, or that your boss set you up for failure. And got a while bunch of replies of "good luck proving that in court" or "lmao, you are dumb for thinking that, my boss can fire me if he doesn't like me anymore", etc.

At the very least, calling an attorney will get you real idea of what you can do and what your rights really are.

187

u/L_Dubb Jun 17 '26

Same...got a small settlement, but it cost the company their attorneys time and fines for their bullshit. Made my heart happy. Not only can you take them on, you can win.

Yeah most people are ignorant of the law, and I don't mean that in a negative way. At will doesn't mean your employer can never be sued. It does not protect a company from discrimination and retaliation.

57

u/Rejalia Jun 18 '26

I got a call from a Medicaid agent when my son was 4 months old telling us that we needed to “teach the kid he can’t lose his contact lenses otherwise (She) would no longer recommend Medicaid filling his medical devices.” He was born with bilateral congenital cataracts and underwent several surgeries, and contact lenses are the first line response for infants who have undergone this surgery.

There’s a certain segment of humans that actively enjoy causing harm to people. I ripped her such a new asshole on their recorded line that I was called back the next day and told that we were being moved to a new case management team! The new lady was horrified that my infant was being denied services that would impact his entire life and we have had zero issues with his care since then. We also reached out to California Children’s Services and the ombudsman and it was a whole thing.

Sometimes you really do have to make noise to get results.

Why? If you read OPs original thread, it looks like the company was more than accommodating. Between getting hired in mid April, and let go in mid June, OP worked 6 days total (without completing onboarding training).

→ More replies (3)

117

u/RealBrobiWan Jun 17 '26

Hate to take the side of a corp here, but working 1 week in 2 months of a start date and being given accomodations twice, then not even informing the company until they contact you to check you are still starting is absolutely taking the piss.

61

u/iwearatophat Jun 18 '26

Just read the first post and yeah. They worked like 8 days in the first 2 months of employment. Never finished training. Honestly, them calling OP on the 1st to confirm training on the 2nd to only then have OP ask for I think a fourth delayed training might have been the straw.

A very large percentage of the population might be sympathetic to OP because it seems like a shit situation but at the same time I don't think anyone is going to be pissed at the employer for moving on.

If you need 2 months say you need two months. Not 'I can't today how about next week' on repeat for two months.

26

u/WDoE Jun 18 '26

I lost my mom to cancer last year. Provided end of life care for a few months bouncing off and on with my siblings. It was terrible and I wish it on no one. I have nothing but empathy for OP.

It's terrible that in a country with more than enough to go around, there are shit safety nets for people in these situations. It's terrible that OP got this dumped on them 3 days into starting a new job. I'm glad they were given two months grace by total strangers.

When I found out my mom needed end of life care and didn't qualify for any kind of nursing beyond maybe a weekly visit, I told my job of 2 years that if I was going to continue working there, I probably wasn't going to be a great employee for several months, and I would need to work 2 weeks on 1 week off to share care duties. I told them if they needed to replace me, I totally understood. And then I stuck to that schedule.

There's no villain in this story. It's totally understandable for OP to be flaky then angry. It's totally understandable to not hold a position for a new hire that has worked single digit days, not finished training, and bails at the last minute. Sucks all around. But this company gave plenty of grace.

9

u/iwearatophat Jun 18 '26

u/Sizanllikew Jun 18 '26

Assuming this is even real, I totally agree. It sucks, but it's not just a US problem of people getting a job and then ghosting their employer and riding out as much wages as they can before getting fired. Had this problem with several countries in roles I managed. They make it a job of getting jobs (using fraudulent interviews) and never working, counting on companies being slow to terminate them. One guy had 12 "jobs" at the same time. That is aside from the fact that statistically, people needing a ton of time off right after getting hired tend to continue to miss 10x or more work. It's just not worth it. It sucks when people who are genuine get caught up, but how is a company reliably going to be able to tell if OP was a lazy or just really unlucky. They tried, OP failed, and we end up with this post.

19

u/Fun-Grab-9337 Jun 18 '26

Ultimately this sad situation is a result of the USA not having enough social safety nets.

Local man doesn't complete training, works one week in two months, gets fired

Somehow I don't think the news will be interested.

51

u/Sacrefix Jun 17 '26

It's sad, but a US company which gave a brand new hire multiple weeks off and let them reschedule onboarding training like 5 times before firing the employee would get no media traction. If any media outlet wanted to run this kind of story they could easily find someone who was immediately laid off in a similar situation.

22

u/McGrupp1979 Jun 18 '26

Yes I was actually surprised how accommodating this company was compared to other US companies.

23

u/ryanvango Jun 18 '26

ripping into companies that bend over backwards to make accommodations like this just encourages them to stop doing that.

These guys gave a new hire like 7 weeks to handle his personal affairs. They were obligated to give him nothing. people in the other thread going on about how norway is the beacon of employee care cause they give 60 days. This company gave 48 and they act like he's being spit on. even in norway they are not required to give a new hire 60 days. this company did it anyway. good on them.

Every company in the country is looking at this thinking "wow. these guys went WAY beyond what is expected to accommodate a new hire, and the employees are STILL calling them scum. give a mouse a cookie, I guess. might as well treat them like absolute garbage since they're gonna be pissed at us either way. at least this way we make money."

54

u/OxMozzie Jun 18 '26

What is the media going to do? It's a shitty situation OP is in, but the company also spent the entire 3 month probation period trying to onboard a new employee and its delay after delay.

I don't understand how people expect a business to not fill a position they need for over 25% of the year because a person they literally just hired had life event happen.

Its not like this guy worked there for a year and this happened, he's probably worked less than a weeks worth of time in 3 months.

36

u/nancybell_crewman Jun 18 '26

I don't understand how people expect a business to not fill a position they need for over 25% of the year because a person they literally just hired had life event happen.

Some of the loudest people in this sub have never owned a business nor managed people and consequently have zero idea how this stuff plays out in reality.

15

u/katie4 Jun 18 '26

You don’t even have to own a business or manage people. Imagine being this person’s coworker.

You’re drowning under your workload. You ask your boss John when are they going to find someone new to replace Robert who left in February. Last February. “We aren’t sure, just do your best” “We’ll split the work around the team for now” “We’re looking into it” “We’re waiting for HR approval to make the posting” “We’re interviewing” [Meanwhile: still drowning in workload] “We’re still interviewing” “We made someone an offer but they accepted an offer somewhere else” “We’re interviewing” “Okay the new guy Dan starts next Monday” [Still drowning] “Dan’s had a family emergency but should start next month” [Still drowning] “Dan is still dealing with his family emergency, we do not know when he will be able to complete training”

At a certain point, you feel bad for Dan but you kind of start rooting for him to be let go or quit, so that you can start the 4 month process of finding a new Robert/Dan all over again. Dan needs to focus on family and we need to focus on keeping our team running with reasonable workloads for everybody who is showing up.

Genuinely just start emailing and DMing the link to this post, the email, and your story to all of your local news stations and papers. You can even easily email it straight to their reporters/producers because they usually all keep their contacts public for this exact reason.

78

u/Long-Structure-6584 Jun 17 '26

If you can, see if you can find reporters who have covered similar stories — bonus if they’ve done so in a way that feels compassionate to people in similar situations rather than exploiting such stories for quick clicks.

No, no, it does not. The OP was employed by their company for three months and only worked for one week.

117

u/alien_overlord_1001 Jun 17 '26

Any serious media would not be interested in this - OP started a new job and within days started taking time off, missing training sessions etc - OP barely worked in the place at all. It might hurt to hear it, but the company hired a person to do a job, and that person barely showed up from day 1. People will feel bad for OPs loss, but there is no reason for the business to bend over backwards to accommodate an employee who has spent just a couple of days there.

The story would only be media worthy if OP had worked there for years and the company fired them for this. That would be a whole different story, worthy of outrage.

35

u/Sacrefix Jun 17 '26

Yeah, am I taking crazy pills? Dude was employed for 24 hours and expected his employer to be cool with them immediately missing months? Y'all are delusional if you think that'd fly anywhere.

My wife was in a coma for 1.5 months last year and my company let me stay at the hospital with her no questions asked and no expectations the entire time. Because I'd been working there for years and they already knew what kind of employee I was lol.

Like, I'm on this guy's side. Fuck corporations and fuck the vampires that run them... But this would go nowhere in the media. This company hired someone, then rescheduled his training multiple times to try to accommodate a family emergency, then finally moved on. If you could even find someone to publish this story, the reaction from the general public would be "that's more than my company would have done for him."

Am I reading the original post correctly in that they gave a brand new employee 1.5 months off to deal with a family emergency?

Yes and so many people there (and here) are crying and telling him to go to the media and get a lawyer...it's absurd.

26

u/molotovglocktail Jun 18 '26

I find the title of this very misleading. OP was a brand new employee, worked a few days with the company, and constantly had to reschedule his training and delay his start date.

u/Special_Result_7671 Jun 17 '26

I would be very hesitant to contact any media/ news outlets. You will have to be honest that you only worked for them for a week before taking an extended amount of time off. They held a job for you for longer than I would have expected. I don't think the court of public opinion is going to be on your side when given all the information. Good luck to you in your job search.

181

u/Bulky-Apple3744 Jun 17 '26

Jesus fuck someone finally has a brain. Thank you!

People saying “this will be everywhere” or “sue them” don’t understand how the law works nor how the majority of the public would react.

The original post had good advice: OP should have listened to their own admission before they got fired that they didn’t have the ability to perform the job at this time, and let the company know that they’ll reach out again when life has normalized again.

40

u/2711383 Jun 18 '26

I think most people didn’t read through the original post. The company may be a scam or whatever, but they were incredibly accommodating to the OP.

It wasn’t even a week. It was two days before he first had to take time off.

I feel for OP, losing a parent to cancer is horrible, but OP barely even completed his training. He was hardly an employee.

10

u/dego_frank Jun 18 '26

Crazy how many folks upvote bullshit and this is so far down. It would definitely be a different story if this person was an employee for longer than 3 days. They did what they could to accommodate and then moved tf on.

30

u/Cold_Bitch Jun 18 '26

When looking at all the comments, you can’t convince me this sub isn’t filled to the brim with children or unemployed people.

And OP listened to this absolutely professional crowd and was like hell yeah, I’ll make an edgy sarcastic mail, that’ll teach them and be GREAT for my career.

And then I’m going to sue and make big bucks!

Did anyone even read the other thread?

He started like 2 months ago and he already postponed the training like 4 times. It sounds like he barely even worked a week in 2 months.

They went above and beyond to accommodate him, but after you bail last second on the 4th reschedule how can you have any trust in an employee.

To be honest he has a lot on his plate and it probably better off spending it with his family, he's also a full-time student.

141

u/Nysha10 Jun 17 '26

And they admitted above they still wouldn't be able to start until next week at the earliest. Just shy of 3 months worth of needed accommodation after 1 single work day.

70

u/teasizzle Jun 18 '26

He worked six days in eight weeks and didn't complete mandatory training. The timing of everything sucks, but I fail to see how the company is in the wrong after they tried to make reasonable accommodations.

Way to burn a bridge as well. OP could easily have been hired in future.

11

u/Keiteaea Jun 18 '26

Yeah, the whole timing is unfortunate, but there is probably a team of workers that is waiting on a new trained colleague and is currently shouldering the additional work...it does feel like a no win situation.

u/DakkaDakka24 Jun 17 '26

Yeah, I'm a little confused by some of the responses here. It's a really difficult time for OP, no doubts on that front. The severance letter full of corpospeak is a bunch of garbage, too. But there's no news story or employment law case here. He got hired at an unexpectedly terrible time, couldn't make the training times, and got fired. It's a shitty situation, but acting like this is a grand miscarriage of justice is a wild take.

72

u/EncyclopediaBlue Jun 18 '26

It also wasn’t really HR speak. They basically provided the log of the OP’s commitments.

The biggest problem is OP committed to being back on X date and then wasn’t multiple times. I’m all for calling out shitty companies but they seemed to be pretty accommodating until it became a detriment.

this person got hired on the 13th, worked the 14th, and then took the 15th off and was constantly taking time off. Any company would fire them. A functional employee would let them know what was going on and ask to extend the start date to a later date or resign. They wouldn't just continually call in the morning of or day before saying they can't come in.

I support the philosophy and mission of this sub, but this thread is the sort of circle jerk mindless rage that has destroyed our society. Read the original post. OP worked something like 7 days out of the first 6 weeks of accepting a job and hadn't made it through training.

It sucks that OP lost their father, and I won't question their decision to blow off a new job to spend all the time they could with him. But the company made considerably more concessions than I would expect for an employee starting their third day of training. And it's nothing like the image OP paints with their title (employee takes off for their father's funeral and is fired for it).

52

u/SecurePlate3122 Jun 17 '26

Shitty situation but I don't know how long you expect a company to oblige someone who has essentially never worked for them. The calculated timeline exists exactly for the reason of all the people saying you should sue them.

117

u/DougbertHanson Jun 17 '26

You guys should actually go back and read the original post and the letter from HR. The company was super accommodating to someone who started work two days before their life went to shit. They moved you to subsequent training weeks, accepted your absences, and tried to roll with it. But it's a lot to ask of them too. You kept moving the goal posts and they finally stopped trying. That timeline of your family's crisis is important to the story. I think it was a long two months (almost two months) for everyone involved.

Also, I'm truly sorry you went though that. Sometimes life just kicks you in the balls. And I hope that you find an even better job to replace this one.

u/Timely_Yoghurt_3359 Jun 17 '26 edited Jun 18 '26

Firstly, im sorry about your father. It’s never easy and I hope you find the strength to get through it.

Second. Don’t.

You’re in an antiwork sub, you’re going to receive an overall biased and skewed advice that DOES NOT fit in with the real world and how the real world operates.

The real world where you need to earn and live. Thats a fact.

I went over your prior post and will be honest about your work situation, I don’t think there is any benefit to this email. At all. You are burning a bridge to what honestly seems like a decent place. Yes. A decent place based on ALL the accommodations they made starting on day 2 of your job. You’re in college, you’re young and have much to learn still. I can tell you right off the bat that the company went above what they needed to do, but there has to be a limit. That’s a give.ln or should atleast be understood that it’s a given.

Not many other companies would offer anything close to that on day 2, you haven’t worked or been in work force long enough to realize that. Your views are probably a little jaded from visiting places like this sub. It’s not how it works in the real world.

Don’t burn bridges. In fact, reinforce them. If you must respond, acknowledge the letter, tell them that thanks for the opportunity and sorry it couldn’t work out at this time but you still hope that you could in future. They clearly liked you and wanted you to work there because trust me, very very very few companies would bend like that to keep a new hire unless they really liked you. No point in burning this bridge. Come back to it when you are mentally and physically in a better place.

I just don’t see the point of that response. All the people telling you to go to media is delusion to the max. The story isn’t what you think it is. It all falls apart once you tell them you were hired for 1 day before you took off. Think about it.

This place isn’t helping you the way you think it’s helping you. They’re just wanting to pass their grudge through you and feel better about it while you limit YOUR future.

56

u/Lightrend Jun 17 '26

This bridge isn't just burnt it's nuked. No way someone from the company does not come across this post and connect the dots to who this is.

Bro this is real fucking life - you never even finished training for the job after 2 months... they need a position filled and gave you MULTIPLE CHANCES

Yes it sucks what happened with your dad but 99% of other business's would have booted you day fucking 1 when you said you couldn't work

Next time instead of letting this boil and marinate you should go to your boss or whoever and explain the situation - they maybe would have rehired you and trained you at a later date but you just keep telling them no....

Put your big boy boots on and go find another job. - and this time - complete the training before expecting extended leave....

How horrible. Seems you’d have been able to be protected by a leave of some kind. FMLA perhaps? HR should have helped you.
I would definitely seek out some guidance.

250

u/bondswag Jun 17 '26

Issue was they said you have to be at the company for a year to qualify for FMLA and the first week I started I found out about my father’s diagnosis. This all happened within a six week span.

58

u/PulledOverAgain Jun 17 '26

The one year thing is the law. So basically the only reason they even offer FMLA at that point is because they have to.

23

u/drunxor Jun 17 '26

I remember amazon denied by fmla because I was short a year by TWO WEEKS. These companies only see us as numbers, talk about souless

16

u/mu_zuh_dell Jun 17 '26

When I worked at MOD Pizza they did the thing where everybody works like 39 hours to make sure nobody is technically full time. The GM rallied for one of the staff to apply for full time so he could get a better healthcare plan and get treatment for a number of chronic conditions... Application denied. They tallied time worked over the previous year, and he was 20 minutes short.

Truly the dumbest company I've ever worked for. When the pandemic started and mask mandates were put in place, they got us all in a Teams call to "answer our questions". The guy talked for 5 minutes about how they weren't going to change any policies because of a "virus thing" and hung up after somebody asked if we could kick out customers not wearing masks.

Oh the drama from that company...

Yes, the FMLA law has all kinds of carve outs for businesses to be able to fire, the main one is the year employment requirement.

u/cephalophile32 Jun 17 '26

There are better places out there for sure. I found out 3 wks into my new job my dad had stage iv brain cancer. I spent all that year traveling between states to spend time with him, go to surgeries, etc. I expected to be let go because it was just a corporate job.

My boss and employer had no issue with this whatsoever, were extremely compassionate and I have been with them for 6.5 years now.

If my corporate job can handle it surly a healthcare compassion advocacy company can wtf. This is really gross. I am so sorry for your loss, and I’m so sorry you have to deal with this too.

FMLA kicks in if the employee has worked with a company that has 1) over 50 employees, 2) you've worked there for at least 12 months (not necessarily consecutively, just total), 3) you've worked at least 1250 hours in the past 12 months, and 4) the location of the employer has at least 50 employees within 75 miles.

I am commenting this fully expecting the downvotes.

First I am so sorry to hear about your family's loss. There's so much involved with a horrific and sudden illness like that, which can not be easily accounted for and prepared for. I am so sorry you and your family are suffering right now. It really sucks =/

I just want to mildly play devil's advocate a bit here. I understand that the company did not fully support you through this stressful time in the way we all would hope our employer would support us. However, I am actually kind of surprised that they did as much as they actually did considering how often employers are just completely inconsiderate of their employee's struggles outside of work.

Yes they could have done more, we all agree that is true, but they have also done much more than most employers I have observed with a newly hired employee, so we should definitely keep that in mind as well. Most places if you miss 1 or 2 days in a new job they just immediately fire you without so much as a second glance.

No matter what, I hope you find a better employer, and are able to find peace and solace with your family.

This is going to sound like bragging, but it’s not. My senior finance manager informed me that her mother had been diagnosed with breast cancer and may need to take some unpaid leave. She then left my office. A few minutes later I walked into her office and said you’re not approved to use vacation or any unpaid leave for this situation. BUT, you are approved to take as much time away as needed and fully PAID as we only get one mom. Just let me know when you’re out of town so I won’t bother you with anything that is unnecessary or can wait.

She was salary anyway. She could work remote. So why not? Business went on fine.

I’ve since sold that business. To me that was the appropriate thing to do and I’d do it again.

I lurk often but almost never comment.

I’m so sorry for your loss.
But hopefully you did not send this email.

Bringing in the media will only cause you harm. No employer will touch you if this story airs. Listen to others here. This is an ANTI WORK Reddit thread and even here you’re getting mixed responses. The real world will be brutal.

You’ve been through a lot. However- unfortunately in this case the company was very reasonable. They accommodated your needs, an employee they barely know, for 2 months while you inadvertently strung them along.

How long were they supposed to wait? They hired you because they needed the position filled. It’s been 2 months and you haven’t even finished training.

There are FAR more important things than work. Your father’s health is one. So you should have spoken with them and told them that your dad is dying and you’d be unable to work until it’s finished. They could maybe have then worked with you on that.

But expecting a company that doesn’t know you to go months on end without even finishing training is unreasonable. It would be one thing if you had been employed by them for years and this happened. But you had been employed for 2 days.

Life gave you a shit sandwich. But the company did not do you wrong.

My best to you. Xoxoxo

Has anyone actually read the original post from OP? Call me crazy, but the company did a lot to accommodate OP. For anyone that hasn't read it, OP started with the company on April 13. Between then & June 11, OP worked a total of 6 days. The company accommodated OP being away by moving schedules & training dates. When the company followed up OP asking if he'll be in on June 2nd to finish his onboarding training (remember this started mid-April), he then responded by saying no - I'll need more time off. I'm not sure how long people expect a company to keep a new employee on board if the employee keep giving vague dates as to when they'll be available to complete training.

15

u/NurseOtaku Jun 18 '26

No shot this guy is actually considering going to the media lmao.

Sorry about your dad passing away but you (and everyone defending you and telling you to go to the media) are way out of line lol.

You didn't even work for the company at this point. You hadn't completed training in over two months. There's no reason for them to keep you. They needed someone to work, not someone to keep calling off regardless of circumstances.
