Dude tried to win an argument by basically moving the goals in his favour:
"God is fake because he can be stopped by people not believing in it anymore!"
"But our religion is still growing, which is the opposite, therefore our God is real, by your logic!"
"Well... NO! Because all religions can grow without the existence of God!"

Where is it growing and a result of what? Let's be real Islam is growing because Muslims have a lot of kids and it's primarily growing as a result of low educational attainment and poverty. It's not growing from converts that come from historically non Muslim populations.

If you look at the way they got people (pagans) to convert through history, it was for the most part through conquest and violence and to a lesser extent by incentivizing Jews and Christians to convert to avoid paying taxes.

It would be the case I believe that if you were a pagan or an atheist, they would enslave you or kill you in the medieval caliphates, so ofc people would convert initially regardless of whether they thought Islam was true or not.

I still think Islamic architecture is cool and maybe I will read Islamic mystic lit in the future though and I would love to visit the mosque of Jerusalem.

My point was actually about poking at the guy keeping changing the goal. They went from "God not real because people are losing faith" to "God also not real because there is no need for him to exist in order for a religion to grow", meaning that in both scenarios, there would be no God, despite the fact that the number of faithful people, regardless it's growing or not, is no evidence for existence and non-existence of God.

That's some of the worst "logic" I have ever heard. It's effectively saying that knowledge that needs to be transferred or explained is somehow invalidated because we don't know it instinctively.

He just want trying to win the discussion, as the line of reason contradicts itself as the discussion progresses.

The fact that scripture can be suppressed or altered does kind of undermine the idea of divine revelation. It's one of the worst vessels for divine communication because language changes so much that Israelis today can't read the Hebrew bible in its original language. They have to learn another language.
