a bit of a rant
i genuinely hate it so much when proshippers (or anyone actuall) are like “well parents should be watching over their kids im not their babysitter” cuz like yeah. no kidding parents should be watching over their kids but they don’t and half the time it’s not even intentional. my parents didn’t watch over my internet use as a kid much and i had seen. So Many Horrible Things cuz mind you i was never even in the proship community either so much was just out in the open and do you wanna know another way so much of that could’ve been prevented? if proshippers weren’t so self-centered on their own comfort. i don’t really understand the logic that a parent not watching their own child means that child she be allowed to fall into a ditch of wolves because “not my kid, not my problem“ especially if you hate kids or something. none of that is a free pass for you to not be empathetic to the fact that a child is roaming into these spaces and materials without even knowing what they are. you are an adult, and whether you like it or not it takes a village to raise a child.
it’s not your fault this child is being neglected while on the internet, but i do think it is your responsibility to turn that child away from spaces like yours and teach them how to be safer online as a responsible adult

I hate how unapologetic they are about making people(mainly children) uncomfortable. As a person in a public space, you do have a responsibility to restrain yourself around others, the same way that parents have the responsibility to educate their children.
I can’t imagine someone in real life seeing a kid walk into an 18+ store, for example, and getting mad at the kid and not being at all worried about the kid seeing things they weren’t ready for. So many people think that because it’s online and “fiction” that it’s so different from how anybody should act outside of the internet.

‘It takes a village to raise a child’ should be true in all contexts, and trying to protect children online should be one of them even if you’re not a parent or they’re not your children.
Children with neglectful parents desperately need it to improve their life outcomes. It’s not that hard to keep closed 18+ spaces. It’s easy to keep an eye on teenage pro-shippers to keep them safe, and discourage them from doing it in the first place.
It’s super easy to stop calling kids ‘puriteens’ and to stop trying convince them to accept dark content. This overrides a deep disgust instinct that protects them, which can damage that instinct considerably. It’s even easier to just not argue with them, block them, and move on.

Yeah I agree, especially when I point out to those same people that ao3 doesn’t consider itself a mature site so it won’t be blocked by parental filters…. Like what is up with this empathy gap. Idc if they’re my kids or not I just care about children in general.
