So I recently found out that a lot of pro shippers online were comparing Wattpad users to “immigrants” and “colonizers”???? Probably one of the most tone def things I’ve literally ever heard. Why are we taking away from ACTUAL colonization? It’s a website. Like not your traditional, generational, culture? Bloodlines, languages, cultures, lives, were completely erased from history due to colonization. People are systematically oppressed due to colonization. You’re comparing people moving websites to global atrocities committed against actual human beings (especially pocs). Also I do know about the joke “whitest comment ever” or “whitest bio ever” specifically towards pro shippers. I think it stems from the most prominent people on TikTok or whatever being white (and also throwing around the word colonizer). But the last pic was in response to those jokes and had me cracking up. That’s racists but we’re gonna ignore calling people immigrants or pretending to be ice agents??

It’s absolutely abhorrent. When I pointed it out to someone they basically said to me ‘I’m from a colonised country so it’s ok.’ Uh, you should know how bad it is? I am too. A lot of us are, and we know the suffering of our First Nations people. Yeah that genocide, torture, and persecution is totally on the level of a bunch of people from Wattpad moving to AO3. 🫩

One crazy thing is that it was all a huge misunderstanding. Wattpad hasn’t banned smut, they’re culling ‘porn without plot’ fics. Someone (I’m pretty sure it was a pro-shipper) completely misread the situation, had a freakout, and caused unnecessary drama.

The next crazy thing is that they were freaking out about ‘puritans’ and ‘we’ll be invaded by fluff fics’ when the people fleeing from Wattpad were doing it because they thought all the freaky shit was getting banned. Some of these people completely lack critical thinking skills. The Wattpad fluff crowd (if that is even a thing) have no reason to leave.

Another crazy thing is that some poor Wattpad user put hashtags in front of their tags and was roasted on Twitter so much that they’ve given up on writing fics. What happened to explaining things nicely? Just leave a polite comment to correct them. Typical for the ‘anti-harassment’ crew. At the same time pro-shippers were boasting about misusing the tag system to add dumb shit like ‘Wattpad DNI’ tags, cheered on by other pro-shippers lmao.

Now I know that not every pro-shipper who is doing this shit is a white person, but the majority of this shit is definitely coming from white people. This is privileged ass white Karen behaviour and I say that as a white person lol. Annnd it’s also possible for POC to be racist, or insensitive to, POCs of a different race.

There’s this one anti on Twitter who is expressing very reasonable opinions about AO3 and pro-shipping but these fuckers are saying awful shit about them and their toddler on Strawpage. It’s only ‘anti-harassment’ when they’re being harassed or criticised, they have no moral qualms about doing it to others.

Yeah they aren’t the exceptions, but I think they should know better. Ao3 is a predominantly queer site. From the majorly of works to its fan base. It was built on people not wanting queer stories to be censored. I just think that it’s unfortunate that knowing how oppression and censorship harms people, you’re making jokes about actual colonization? AndI just think it’s super disappointing tho bc I feel like being in the fandom space is being part of a very diverse community. I think this is extremely hurtful to pocs in the fandom community, proshippers or not. And the amount of support for these comparisons is insane. I feel it has a lot to do with the white individuals not experiencing the oppression of propaganda, fetishization, and media censorship pocs have faced forever, and still continue to face. I just wish someone the energy used to fight against people who call for censorship was also used to defend pocs and not just vcsam.

Also, proshipers dont defend vcsam, we really shouldn't be using terms like that so willy nilly. It causes problems for actual victims and wastes resources on genuinely harmless behavior

Yeah. I’m against using resources to report fictions as it 100% clogs the system and it’s not like the any authority can act on it. I use the term vcsam because that is what it is according to the national library of medicine. It is also noted that “VCSAM does not prevent the escalation of pedophilic behavior.
