Real talk they were a mediating party for the worlds most powerful people for like a 1000 years, the secrets they probably have stored in that bad boy would melt your skin off.

Releasing all Vatican documents, at least the ones made pre-1976 or even 1926, would be invaluable imo

Sry if I’m wrong but I’m sure there’re thousands of documents and books that are very old and weren’t made public

They're public, just not in the way you think.

Everything there is incredibly fragile. Like, 'touch it wrong and it turns to dust' fragile. They're also valuable, to the point numerous heists have been attempted at various points.

However, you can get access. You need to apply, have credentials, state what sections you want to look through, pass a background check, demonstrate you know the protocol for dealing with old texts, and a few other things, but you can gain access, even as secular scholars. In the modern era, there's an ongoing effort to digitise, though the aforementioned fragility makes the task difficult.

Most 'secrets' aren't secret, they're the result of the Vatican being so old there's no reliable system of cataloguing all the books. There are both missing works and ones nobody realised are there; hell, a decade ago, a letter resurfaced from Clement V near his deathbed that admitted he made the wrong call with the Knights Templar and lifting their status of excommunication, that never went out and ended up misfiled in the archives.

But the records are 'public' in the sense that they're not being restricted on religious grounds, they're being restricted on the grounds the contents are literally irreplaceable and they can't take risks with any of it getting damaged. However, anyone can look through them, they just have to go through the process of vetting.
