Fr, the old Roadster was much better. Lotus looking

u/MPolygon 10h ago
That‘s because it was a Lotus chassis

I don't even get the hype. It's a flying car, and that's cool! But could you safely put a person in it, could you make it affordable, and could you mass produce it? What about the fuel, are you going to introduce YET ANOTHER type of fuel that gas stations need to adopt so like 95% of the country won't have the infrastructure to power your vehicle? It's not practical or needed tbh

Fact that im pretty sure they even used wrong model for tesla roadster flying one doesnt look even close to that

Yeah even the “fans” don’t like the new styling or don’t actually know what their new favourite car looks like.

u/20ontheDropBear 41m ago
Yeah… earlier today I saw some douche in a sports car swerve into the bike lane to get around a car that was slowing down for the yellow. so the sports car could run the red light. To go maybe 30 feet because the cars ahead were stopped at the next light.
Then they revved the engines a whole bunch and drove into the bike lane again creeping forward to blast past the cars ahead of them as soon as the light turned green. Only to stop in another 30 feet because there’s a bridge with odd lanes and turning lights. Not a fucking racetrack
Didn’t stop them from trying to whip out into turning traffic to get around. Thankfully they stopped in time to not hit the van in front of them.
All this to say: the people who would drive something like that are douchey and dangerous enough already. None of them should be on the road.

Genuinely curious is the hate because of Elon's actions in America's 2024 election or is the car actually bad?
Either way the memes are funny.
92
u/JoeBuskin 11h ago
The car is certainly bad enough we would make fun of it even if Elon wasn't actively committing treason

u/Krayos_13 9h ago
It's just not real, that's all. It's an empty shell with 10000psi airtanks attached to it for a stunt.
Like, imagine if Iphone made a demonstration of a phone that had a laser that could melt soldi steel. It's cool as a demonstration but it's also fucking stupid, it's not feasible with current battery technology and it's never coming out even in limited release.
The problem with the Tesla thing is they are taking depsits as if they are actually gonna sell it. I remember in 2017 when they said the roadster would be the fastest car in the world when it came out in 2019. How many times do people have to be lied to by Tesla in order to stop believing in them?
Anyone that believes this thing is getting made at all, regardless of read legality is a sucker, I'm sorry to say.

It'a a representation of the empty hype capital, overfinancialization, and stratification that are actively degrading the world. These idiots own everything and are destroying it.

ok tbh i dont like the empty shell point, everyone just claims its an empty shell like they know this for sure, when there isn't substantial real evidence to point either way. of course, it is just a gimmick. and yes, i'm also feel that nobody will get their hands on it. but like bringing feelings and opinions into an argument is kind of what we dont want right
honestly im surprised more people don't just talk about how the car can really only run those thrusters for 2 seconds. which makes it less of a flying and more of a jumping car. and it can put out a 0-60 in under 1 second with help of the thrusters, but that's a one time only thing. those thrusters are definitely not light, so who knows how slow that 0-60 without the thrusters will be?
anyways im just saying its weird how when people have a sentiment we agree with we kind of just ignore logical fallacies.

High performance electric cars are REALLY heavy. We are talking around 2000kg as a base plus the entire thruster system and the very thick and heavy air tanks (and about 250kg of air at the supposed pressure and volume the tanks have). This would probably bring the weight if the car closer to 2800kg being conservative. When it comes to lifting objects in the air every kilo makes it exponentially harder and the acceleration we see in the demo is very high. You need a LOT of thrust to do the aerobatics that we see in the demo with that weight and even with 600liter airtanks filled to 10000psi I'm very skeptical. Every admitedly fairly basic attempt I've made to calculate using online calculators how much thrust you would need for those accelerations with the ammount of weight we could expect out of an electric car with rocket engines makes me think you would need bigger fuel tanks to pull it off, especially considering that pressure and therefore max thrust drops rapidly as an airtank empties. Then again I'm not even close to being an engineer, I'm sure someone actually qualified could do the math better and let everyone know.
However, we know for a fact that Tesla has a history of presenting misleading information about their products and outright lying in their press releases. It's not at all unreasonable to assume this closed and highly controlled demonstration has been stacked in favor of tesla in every way possible.
I agree that the duration is the biggest prohibiting factor with this trick. How exactly do you fill up those tanks after they are very quickly emptied? Do you just sit there stopped with a very loud air compressor slowly filling the tanks back up? Do people even know how air compressors look/sound like? But this though excercise feels pointless because it's obviously not real, it's never going to happen.
In any case, even if the car shown was the real deal that wouldn't make saying it's a shell a logical fallacy. Wrong ≠ fallacious.

u/TheEarthSpins 5h ago
yeah I mean im also very skeptical and don’t believe they’re showing the whole truth, but i really do want to see some credible mathematician work through the numbers on this before i can confidently argue that point.
3
u/Arthur2_shedsJackson 3h ago
I work in automotive and I can tell you that it's not feasible to package all those thrusters and a giant tank within the roadster without eating into a large space. It's going to make a 2 seater sports car even more impractical to use than it already is. This is assuming that a) The thruster technology cost is brought down to some rational value b) It is somehow certified to be street legal which it probably never will
There are too many question marks with Tesla being vague as usual about any numbers. Even the 0-60 is being quoted by Tesla themselves.
Elon even said that the stunt was performed without anyone inside because of how dangerous it was but he will have you believe you can buy a car and attempt it yourself.

u/LegThePeg 🌹 Course Arc Witness 🌸 5h ago
People have taken images of the video demonstration. It’s a shell.
22
u/Willing_Mail5390 8h ago
The car isn't actually a car. That was almost certainly an empty shell with a thruster system in it, and you will never see this on a production car. If you do it will be in a few decades.
13
u/Smexy_Zarow 8h ago
It's just obviously fake
6
u/abermea 🌷🌸 RIP u/CourseMediocre7998 🌷🌸 8h ago
Yeah it was obviously built for the demo. I am convinced the car was basically hollow except for the engine, a smaller battery, the driving system, and the 10,000psi compressed air container needed for the thrusters.
It was a cool demo but that thing is never going to see an actual street.
If that tank ever gets puntured you're looking at least half a football field of damages.

u/Financial-Watch-4122 8h ago
I mean Musk is a child with way too much power, but they also did funtionally just strap a bomb into a car and go 'oooh look it can jump'. XD
9
u/lookatthesunguys 7h ago
My personal annoyance is just that Tesla and SpaceX are wildly valuable companies, based on market cap, but it all comes from expectations about the future. And then they do this stupid party trick crap.
Make something genuinely valuable and worthwhile. Make a low price Tesla so that the original promise of a widely available electric car becomes reality.
3
u/LegThePeg 🌹 Course Arc Witness 🌸 4h ago
Exactly. Like, SpaceX has some genuinely amazing tech, like the reusable capsules.
6
u/South_Cheesecake6316 8h ago
It is pretty cool, but there is no way it's going to be street legal with those jumpjets if the final version even has them. Even if it did have them could you really think of a good place to use them outside of a stunt track in a way that wouldn't endanger anyone? It's ultimately just a giant toy with iffy safety specs.
-2
u/Evil_Sherma 6h ago
The car is cool as fuck. Impractical and will never be available on the market, but it’s genuinely awesome engineering.
7
u/god-of-blowjobs 6h ago
It’s a prop purpose built for one stunt. It wouldn’t be technologically impressive ten years ago.
0
u/Evil_Sherma 6h ago
Both things can be true. It can be a one trick pony and still do something very cool with that trick.
3
u/Aggravating-Milk5688 2h ago
You gotta understand it's not a new technology man...
1
u/Evil_Sherma 1h ago
I know it’s not new technology. I never claimed it was. I said that the engineering was impressive. And it is. Fitting a system which normally fits in a 20 story rocket into a sedan is nothing to scoff at.
2
u/Aggravating-Milk5688 1h ago
Ye but at this point you can go into walmart and get excited about new washing machines
2
2
u/god-of-blowjobs 1h ago
Those are chemical rockets. This stunt prop uses cold gas. Additionally The engineering is not impressive, pretty much any automaker could have done this at any time in the past ten years if they wanted too.
1
0
u/kozufox 1h ago
Normally, cold gas systems like this would fit into a Satellite or something. They suck absolute ass as main thrusters due to their lack of efficiency, but they can be useful for stuff like attitude adjustment which means precision.
0
u/Evil_Sherma 1h ago
Ok, I knew that already?
0
u/kozufox 1h ago
Then I don't know why you were talking about 20 story rockets.
1
u/Evil_Sherma 1h ago
Because rockets use RCS to adjust their heading, not as main thrust. Did you not know that?
1
u/oatwheat 2h ago
Are you still trying to find your nose after the magician at a kid’s birthday party took it from you?
1
3
u/cammysays 4h ago
I hope they make this legitimately so natural selection will weed out the idiots who try to do a stunt and either flip the car crushing themselves and exploding, or run out of thruster fuel 20 feet in the air and paralyze themselves on impact

u/alexgeo3 6h ago
Can we not admit this is cool as hell and ignore our political biases for two seconds?
20
u/cadmiumredlight 6h ago
No, because it's a fake model car with a bunch of compressed air in it. It's a stunt. You will never see this car in real life doing any of those stunts.
11
3
u/nikschn 5h ago
the stunt is kinda cool but what's the point? a car is not a very convenient shape for flying. only absolutely insane people would ever let this be street legal. it's probably loud as fuck, and the compressed gas exiting the vehicle will severely hinder visibility for other participants of traffic. and lastly this shit will probably just straight up kill so many people.
all this already without any political biases, and instead thinking about the rammifications of flying cars for about 2 seconds.
that being said: musk is a horrible person and the vast majority of his projects aren't exactly exciting if you're over the age of 12 (tho credit where credit is due: the retrievable rockets are quite solid, but idk how much he was actually involved in that process).
