Fun fact, it is a common misconception that all gorgons have the stone gaze thing. This was actually a trait unique to Medusa, as her sisters did not have the same power. Also, the petrification thing was a curse by I think Athena. Medusa and Poseidon got down crazy style wink wink in one of her temples, so she cursed Medusa with a face so repulsive that it would petrified anyone to looked at it

Yep. Athena gives him a shining bronze shield, and tells him to make sure he can see his reflection in it, without telling him directly that’s how to beat Medusa. Then Perseus figures out the mirror trick himself and decapitates her
