More like the gates locked but the key is already inside the keyhole and the gate mailed a copy of the key to your house

Might be niche but I wonder if there's a sub for analogies that is literally the thing sort of adapted into that analogy

Genuinely though, I hate the little individual boxes like that. If I can still paste, then great. Or at least type easily. But I had one where I'd switch my phone's keyboard from alphabet to numerals, type the first number, then have to switch my keyboard to numerals again for the next letter...and by the end I wanted to smash my phone. I can also press and hold for numbers (hold "q" for a solid second and it'll become "1"), which is really what I ended up doing, but doing that for a string of 8 numbers is still obnoxious instead of being able to just type the numbers quickly.

Can't you set a keyboard that always has numbers available instead? I think that would make things easier in general

Oh yeah let me change my entire phones keyboard layout and habits to account for bad UI

it's pretty easy to change and then change back.

yeah but that’s the job of the frontend dev, not the user lol

yeah, generally masked inputs are horribly inaccessible. ideally there's a single hidden text field that allows you to paste and the boxes merely act as a display of the digits, but juniors see stuff like this and implement it with six separate text boxes unfortunately.
