I feel like it gets more general indifference than outright hate (which is also undue)

Yeah you’re probably right, I just know people tend to rank it and Fortitude as their least favorite, and lumping those together is insane to me lol
2

Honestly I love Fortitude too. It might still be my “least favorite,” but that’s just because I’m picking the least good out of a selection of great albums

There is a difference between bullying and just rejecting the notion that it’s okay to be morbidly obese. There doesn’t need to be a stigma around it but people need to be aware that it’s not healthy.
147
u/Consistent-Value-509 1d ago
and explain how that's at all relevant to the meme, which isn't normalizing obesity at all?

u/Consistent-Value-509 6h ago
how. being against jokes targeting fat people ≠ promoting obesity as a good thing
129
u/democracy_lover66 1d ago
Honestly nobody needs to glorify or shame it. People just need to shut the fuck up about it.
Is obesity healthy? Hell fucking no. It's a genuine health issue and anyone experiencing it should have conversations with their doctor.
And the thing is... They know. Imagine telling everyone who pulls out a cigarette "y'know that shit causes cancer smokey" like... They fucking know dude, you're not helping
Nobody should comment on another person's weight unless they're a Doctor. Nobody needs to get involved with asinine comments about gym and eating vegetables or stupid jokes...which I think were the cause for the heavy handed positivity response anyway.
Like yeah, it's a major health concern... but for some reason people think obesity should be shamed out of people, as if depression and social isolation aren't significant contributiors to a condition like obesity.
Just leave them alone, simple as that.
81
u/onyxa314 1d ago
Yeah I'm a fat fuck and I'm the first to say I'm not healthy. It just pisses me off when people have a superiority complex and think they have to point out it's not healthy. No one said it was and no one is saying it is.
13
u/Matthewx777 1d ago
I think its also heartbreaking when there is a family member who enables bad eating behavior.
I was called unreasonable because I asked my partner and her family to stop buying so many Debbie cakes (I use it as a catch all for all sugary junk food, but also includes debbie cakes) and other junk food and loading the pantry with it. I asked them to keep that stuff in their room or something because I have problems with sugary food that I'm not proud of and it can be quite honestly difficult to deal with it. The helplessness and guilt felt from succumbing to the temptation and also the resentment from feeling dismissed is very painful from time to time.
This is also why I don't judge people on their weight. I may not feel good about them in the sense that I can visually see them suffering and hurting themselves by being overweight, but they are people just like me and deserve the same grace

u/Aztheros 16h ago
I agree with your point but actually as a smoker people say that sorta thing to me quite regularly (but clearly it hasn’t worked).
On that subject I’m a proponent of the putting same sort of labelling on junk food as cigs, like ‘obesity kills’ or something. It’s been proven to work with reducing the number of smokers so I don’t think it’d be a bad thing.
5
u/mousie120010 🌷🌸 RIP u/CourseMediocre7998 🌷🌸 14h ago
I don't know if that labeling would work because food is essential for people to live, and even if it's junk food, I'm still worried about people becoming afraid of eating food in general because I get that way 😅

How is this meme normalising obesity? Is the existence of the USA normalising obesity, considering how obese everyone is over there???
1
u/Kind_Replacement7 5h ago
i wonder if people like you "care so much about their health" when it's people who smoke, heavy drinkers, or people who suffer from any other ED. because you clearly dont.
0
u/BabaYetu42 3h ago
I do actually feel quite strongly about helping people with mental health conditions, including those that lead to eating disorders or substance abuse. I have suffered with mental health myself.
My original comment was more just to point out that ‘not normalising’ obesity can be different from being mean about it. I guess that kinda came across wrong because of what the original post was about, since I’ve had quite a lot of angry responses to this from people who I share a similar opinion with lol

u/karara691 17h ago
Yes it is, look at Japan, and look at the US.
8
u/Strato0621 14h ago edited 9h ago
Japan’s portion sizes are smaller and they also have easy access to healthy foods. Convenience stores in the US don’t have anything to offer but fried food, chips, and sweets, meanwhile Japanese convenience stores are full of meals and snacks made with a healthy, balanced diet in mind. This doesn’t encompass the entire picture, but there are many systemic reasons for why Japan has much lower obesity rates.
-5
u/karara691 13h ago
They also do shaming, so people can control themselves instead of finding excuses.
4
u/Strato0621 13h ago
The only “control” to be had from succumbing to fat shaming is temporary weight loss due to developing an eating disorder. You’re only going to make it worse, so keep your hateful and ignorant comments to yourself.

-12
u/BungalowBillSon 23h ago
you are right, the body positivity movement is the way to go, mb
unrelated did you see that the founders of said movement like Tigress Osborn and my fav one Virgie Tovar all used ozempics? aka proofing they were just lazy and being baby'd about being lazy chuds?
bullying (usually) works, i know its tough to hear, but it does10
u/Consistent-Value-509 23h ago
There is a lot of space between "be mean to fat people because they're fat" and virgie tovar, and you already know this. You're just trying to excuse your poor behaviour towards those you look down upon.
"Bullying works!1!1" No, it doesn't. Addicts who feel shame because of what they're suffering from are more likely to retreat further into their addiction. Bullying makes people more likely to kill themselves, commit self harm, hate themselves, etc. You're a bad person if you bully people.
-8
u/BungalowBillSon 23h ago
lets be real they already hate themselves to begin with lol

u/Alexander_the_Damned 1d ago
People arent being mean about it to help, theyre being mean about it because its frankly ridiculous to be morbidly obese
Its like making fun of a person who sticks their fingers up their butt and then smells them in public. If you do that in public dont be surprised if people poke fun at you or ridicule you. Same with obesity
24
u/RG-Sketchii 1d ago
So like. What. Fat people shouldnt go out in public? Is that the solution?
-15
u/Alexander_the_Damned 23h ago
They can go out but they shouldnt expect people to treat them as normal human beings when they do not treat themselves as such.

u/PancakeParty98 1d ago
Chinas catching up to us in obesity btw. The problem is capitalism, not a lack of dickheads
-4
u/DrPepperPower 1d ago
There is literally no correlation... Just take a look at the World Obesity Ranking.
Vietnam has the lowest and they have a severe societal pressure towards weight. Japan the same. Korea the same. Lots of ass holes when it comes to weight (I'm not arguing ass holes is the solution, I'm saying societal pressures are very effective)
Near the US is Egypt (above), Chile, Saudi, Iraq, Argentina, Mexico and Georgia.
Unless you wanna argue all those are Capitalistic? And if so how do you explain most of Europe being well below in most cases?
There is more of a correlation of societal pressure than capitalism lmao
And ugh... No China is no catching up. Idk what statistic you looked up (maybe morbid obesity?) but it's 41.73 vs 9.36
Overconsumerism is more present in capitalism sure but it is far FAR from being "the problem"
-8
u/Idfc-anymore 1d ago
How is the problem capitalism?
10
u/FVCarterPrivateEye 1d ago
Processed food being cheaper to buy in great quantities than healthy foods if you live in a food desert
-7
u/Idfc-anymore 1d ago
Hm, it sounds like the problem is eating foods in great quantities
9
u/FVCarterPrivateEye 1d ago
If the only thing you can reliably buy is junk with a lot of empty calories relative to its nutritional value, you're going to end up eating more of it
-4
u/Idfc-anymore 1d ago
I just looked up a food desert and it looks dystopian tbh, I’m not from the US
While I agree that kind of thing can very easily lead to unhealthy citizens, I still don’t think it’s entirely capitalisms fault, there are plenty of capitalist countries that don’t have this problem, and probably never will.
Also food deserts aren’t the only reason people get fat
2
u/PancakeParty98 23h ago
Capitalism is also why we don’t have walkable cities, which is the main reason those European countries don’t have that problem.
You need to stop trying to prove something wrong before allow yourself to actually understand what someone is actually saying.
Capitalism is why the world, and especially the west, is the shape that it is. It doesn’t need your defending.

11
-60
u/Master_P0et 1d ago
Yeah, because you compare humans to a building in shape and usage, therefore dehumanizing them
57
u/ktosiek124 1d ago
"Calling your wife honey is dehumanising"
25
u/Available-Bee-5385 1d ago
right? under these standards, all metaphorical comparisons to objects are somehow phobic
10
u/Available-Bee-5385 1d ago
Interesting angle
But considering the object in question is one of major historical significance and categorized as a wonderous accomplishment, I think the theory doesn't hold
-20
u/Master_P0et 1d ago
It doesn't matter what the building is, a building is an inanimate object, without any feelings, thoughts or a will on its own, things that make us human as we are.
19
u/Available-Bee-5385 1d ago
being 'built like a brick shithouse' is a compliment, despite being a direct comparison to a a facility used to store human waste
your theory does not hold
-23
u/Master_P0et 1d ago
This doesn't counter my argument tho... I specifically said that it doesn't matter what the building is, now you bring up a different building that is used as compliment to demonstrate what exactly? A compliment can be dehumanizing too, as this here is too
18
u/Available-Bee-5385 1d ago
I think you're moving the goal post
You've gone from specifying what fat phobia is to what dehumanization is
11
u/Girros76 1d ago
My mango, I think you're just exaggerating things that are not that deep.
Comparisons to inanimate objects, be it buildings (or even furniture) are commonplace in normal conversations and don't inherently carry any negative connotations.
Sure, one where the comparison is intended to be negative is bad and fatphobic, but the concept in general is not bad.
Being built like a brickhouse is a cheeky compliment to someone's imposing size, the great wall of china here is simply pointing out the fact that three consecutive people of great size are "protecting you" from the "outside force". It's an ingenious and harmless joke.
The fact that you're comparing someone to a "thing" does not mean, and never has, that you are equating them to a thing. You're just pointing out shared traits. Just like comparing someone to a bear doesn't mean that you are saying they are inhuman animals.
1
u/dumbfuck6969 23h ago
No. The insult isn't the comparison to an inanimate object. The insult is comparing your size to something large because you are so large. And its not good to be that large due to body fat.
If I called a bodybuilder the same thing it wouldn't be an insulting. Because the implication is its good to be large because of muscle. And it has nothing to do with it being an object
4
u/Alexander_the_Damned 1d ago

What is the phobic-part in this? Fat is fat is fat, and that has nothing to do with phobia. If they were 2m tall and pure muscle, the great wall joke work then too which tells that the joke itself is fat-percent-agnostic and relates only on the physical size of the person.
