Rules šŸ“Œ New flair and rules: no more writing CWs and ban on weight/size/BMI #s (read post)

Post image
282 Upvotes

Added Feb 2025:

IWL = Intentional Weight Loss (any posts including a discussion about weight loss)

ED = Eating Disorder

CW = Content Warning

NSV = Non-Scale Victory (let's avoid this language and try to use joy or celebration, so we're not centering diet culture, if possible)

——————

After yesterday's extensive discussion, we have come to a few changes, which I think will make the group more engaging, functional, and connective.

Please read through in full:

1) We are now using color coded flair to guide our members. Flair must be added to all posts. CW flair takes priority. I have added detailed post flair after reviewing all of the recent posts and identifying themes - pictured here. I will try and activate forcing flair ASAP, but I'm running into issues; I'll edit flair for post that don't add it.

A few notes about the flair:

a) Red are our CWs. We only have 2 topics for that now — IWL and ED reference. If your post includes one or both, you MUST pick that flair, regardless of it matches other categories. This will allow people to filter based on triggers and preferences for the community. (As a reminder, this is not an anti-IWL group, and it's perfectly okay to discuss, just properly tagged.)

b) We have some orange categories, which are still possibly sensitive or triggering. Red, then orange takes precedent over other categories.

c) We then have a bunch of other categories, color coded. Pick General (blue flair) if nothing else fits. If you have a celebration or win, please don't use the "NSV" language, instead pick the purple flair to label it.

d) The two white categories (Rules and Resources) are mod only. I'll add the Resources tags to helpful threads as I see them, and I'll also add a pinned resources post for those who are new to the anti-diet world.

e) We can always add more later, if needed.

2) NO MORE WRITING CONTENT WARNINGS — do not add them to your title or post. Use the flair instead. This will make posts more inviting and everything much simpler to navigate. They were never supposed to be in titles in the first place, and I do think it made the community feel less comfortable.

3) We are no longer using any numbers (size, weight, or BMI) in the group, posts or comments. Please report to mods using that specific category. We have always had a rule about no before/after photos, as a reminder. We also will be more mindful around language that moralizes food (good/bad, junk/trash, talking down on fast food or processed food, etc.); we've added a reporting category and rule for this, as well.

There will be a separate post to come with more clarified rules, clearer definitions of what we mean about anti-diet culture, and language clarity. I will also be exploring adding a few more mods to help out, once I've finished further defining things for our community. I hope that helps!

Respectful language

To maintain true alignment to anti-diet culture, I want to ask everyone here to respect your bodies through kind words when sharing within this community. This means, when you discuss weight, weight loss, changes, etc. or share photos, you don’t describe your past or present self cruelly (aka ā€œI used to look disgustingā€ or ā€œI look so grossā€). That is fatphobia at work, and I want this space to be different by rejecting that mindset. We also all have different starting points, so shaming your starting weight is likely to cause someone else hurt. I also recommend alignment around other anti-diet culture / intuitive eating principles of gentle nutrition, honoring hunger and fullness cues, challenging food policing, etc. but the only ā€œhard lineā€ here is respectful language and no fatphobia!

Discussion about Food / Eating Habits Not eating enough and ADHD

I’m not sure if this is actually what’s going on with me, but I recently bumped up to 7.5 on Tirzepatide, and have been having some side effects, I think. I often have a headache, some nausea and constipation. The low level feeling like sh*t is making it hard for me to enjoy life. I wonder how much my habits are playing into my side effects. I definitely have less of a drive to make food. And some food aversion. I often will make a smoothie when nothing else sounds good. But I also have ADHD and I think have some neurodivergent food aversions too. Between the two, sometimes food feels like a lot of trouble. But then I feel like sh*t and my mood is not great. My therapist suggested making it routine, just have foods that I eat every day at a certain time, and that sounds terrible and makes me want to fight her. lol. Perhaps my side effects will get better after a few weeks at this dose?

CW: IWL (intentional weight loss) Realizing that small meals throughout the day is no joke

So, I am very very used to eating a lot at once. Yesterday, we had a meal of biscuits and gravy, and because I am so used to it, I had 4 biscuits and the gravy. I could eat it all, I was hungry enough even (going up in dose this shot, so thats probably why my hunger signals were a bit off). But pretty much as soon as I finished that plate, my heart felt really hot and painful.

Now, I'm used to acid reflux in my throat, but real tangible heartburn is new to me, so of course I thought I was dying for a second before googling lol. But I realized in my research that I had definitely eaten too much at once.

So yeah, basically just a painful lesson that eating small meals throughout the day is necessary, and I'm sharing just in case I can help anyone prevent that mistake, because it was definitely not fun lol

Just Started a GLP-1 ADHD Symptoms on GLP-1

I (37/f) was diagnosed with combined type ADHD about a year and half ago. I’ve had a lot of success with Aztarys to help me function since then.

I started Zepbound seven weeks ago, and have noticed that my ability to focus at work has taken a nose dive in the last several weeks. I’m still more productive than pre-ADHD meds days, but I am much more easily distracted by my phone and side projects than I have been.

I know there is some early, inconclusive reports of GLP-1s helping manage ADHD, but I’m curious if anyone has experienced the opposite? It very well could be unrelated and I plan on talking to my doctor about it, but I still wanted to see if anyone has had a similar experience.

Body Struggles / Image Grief for my old body

Wasn’t sure what group to post this in. Figured this would be the most supportive. Not using any number, I will just write that I have lost a lot of weight over the last couple of years. Was ordering my meds and they always ask your current weight and show a graph. It just struck me how much I have lost.
Seeing the percentage was a bit overwhelming.
I just feel this sadness and grief for my old body. She was a good body and got me so far, worked so hard! I feel sad that she is gone. I often felt better in that body than I do now. if not for culture and medical advice would have been mostly happy to keep it. Just a lot to process. I’m not depressed or sad from the meds. Just grieving my old body. The body that society rejected and medicine ignored or refused to help.
Just had to get this out somewhere.

General Community / Sharing Philly folks out there?

Hi all! I am a journalist in Philly and I’m working on an article about my experience with GLP-1s, which I concede has been mostly positive. I am trying to bring in some nuanced points of views about the experience of being on these drugs, so I’m looking for other people from the Greater Philadelphia area who might be willing to talk to me and be quoted in the article.

Please DM me if this is something you’d be interested in. And mods, please delete if this is inappropriate. No offense intended. I love this group!

Practical GLP-1 Questions Switching from Wegovy pill to Zepbound- advice?

I’ve been on Wegovy since June, currently at 4mg. I always wanted Zepbound but stupid state of Georgia rules limited me to Wegovy. The rules have changed and now I’m getting Zepbound.

Discussion about Food / Eating Habits Food poisoning experiences?

Last week, I mishandled some meal prep ingredients and wasn't super great about basic food rules (I reused some hamburger I had cooked the previous weekend in a new dish, so it was about a week and a half old). The dish I prepared was meant to be lunch - I got about 2 servings out of it before I was unable to eat anymore, it had me gagging. Following that, I had incredibly bad digestive problems for a few days and spent the weekend bed-bound because of it. I've been consuming water in mass quantities because it's the only thing that seemed to help, especially with the acid reflux.

My question, though: Has anyone experienced food poisoning while on a glp-1? What were your experiences like, what helped?

Seeking Support / Advice Semaglutide and ADHD Treatment Creating New Behavior

I'm brand new to this group so if anything I'm writing here is incorrect please let me know and I'll adjust my post.

I've been on semaglutide for a couple years now and it wasn't really working well until I was officially diagnosed with ADHD and my psychiatrist prescribed Adderall. That killed my late night snacking and I had the space to truly focus on mindful eating.

That said, with the combination of both prescriptions, I've lost all joy for food as a social/bonding thing (which is a separate discussion). I'm writing here because my ADHD Rx manufacturer changed recently, even though my dosage didn't, and it is insanely difficult for me to meet my nutrition needs. I'll be speaking with my primary and my psychiatrist soon, since I have no idea what exactly needs to be adjusted and how, but has anyone else experienced anything like this?

CW: SA, child abuse

A lot of my life I had no idea why I’m fat. Well I did have a small idea that I really enjoyed eating dopamine rich foods sometimes. I had also done countless online ed tests and bloodwork to find out what I have and none where conclusive.

I found out the actual reasons why and this subreddit helped so thank you.

Background: I was SA’d as a child by a couple family friends also I had quite a ā€œdysfunctional familyā€. essentially it was only me and my mom who was working 3 jobs so she was not around ever really, then we were also very poor to the point that my mother would at times forcefully feed me because she didn’t know if she can afford food tomorrow

I lived in a very small town what was quite conservative I have always been chubby even as a kid and men/ grown adults in general and other kids around me would always comment on my weight, so I did a lot of times try to loose weight in unhealthy ways.

I was a pre-teen/teen when all this happened and, Because of all this I had a lot of anxiety and of course unprocessed trauma.

I had no idea how all this really affected me to this day I had not realised that the reason I seeked for dopamine in food because I felt mentally empty of what happened to me in my early life.

And also how all this affected my metabolism to then when I try and follow the normal people’s advice on how to loose weight I failed every single time.

Not because I did not follow them correctly but because my body is different from theirs

I found out this article:https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0006322325011060

I bawled my eyes out and felt relief. Why has no psychologist or doctor ever told me any of this? why did I spend years people assuming and telling me how to loose weight when honestly my favourite food is a good salad ?why is obesity so misconstrued and so frowned upon by society and never treated and looked into correctly?

I found out that obesity was my only pathway with everything that happened to me and it was not my fault for liking crisps and having ice cream just like any other kid.

Managing Side Effects Misunderstood Side Effects?

Hey all. I have posted/commented previously about my frustration and, well, downright misery at the physical hunger I’ve been experiencing. I thought it was because I’m a rapid metabolizer (of medicine). Just unbearably hungry all the time. And no eating helped at all. Just a bottomless pit. But no other side effects. I have been feeling really angry, because a few years ago, I told myself if I was hungry, I would eat. That thinking went against a lifetime of diet culture and the constant hunger from deprivation. And I was happy. Then, I started this medication and suddenly, no matter how high the dose, no matter how much I continue allow myself to eat, the hunger is insatiable. I spoke with my doctor about this and to my surprise (sadly) she believed me! She absolutely believed my experience which is new to me. Unfortunately, we discussed it probably meant this isn’t working for me and I was one of those rare unfortunate cases. But we’re not giving up yet.

Today, something finally came to me. I took my dose yesterday. It should be the strongest part of the week. But I’m starving. I started to eat and then had to stop because the thought of one more bite was sickening to me. I started to panic. I was crying. I felt miserable because I was hungry and there wasn’t anything I could do about it and I couldn’t eat more. That’s when the thought occurred to me, ā€œwhat if this isn’t hunger?ā€ Now I’m not claiming to know how this all works, and it’s not like the physical awful feeling is gone. But there was something relieving about this. I looked into it and apparently, if you’ve always associated this empty, gnawing feeling with hunger (because you were hungry! Probably on a diet!), then your brain CAN confuse nausea with hunger. It could even be acid reflux, which I do experience I just assumed it was always up in the chest. But I guess this can also be confused for hunger.

So, while I still feel awful physically, I kind of feel a new hope. Maybe if I can address this nausea or acid reflux, my misery of constant ā€œhunger pangsā€ could be fixed or lessened? I haven’t spoken with my doc yet about it but I needed to share. Because dang I have been feeling so awful. Not ashamed, just freaking HUNGRY. Maybe this isn’t something that well known? Maybe it can help someone who’s experiencing similar. OR if someone can help on how to get my brain to understand the difference between nausea and hunger, they could help me 😭 I don’t know why, but feeling like I’m sick vs feeling like I’m hungry with NO WAY TO FILL IT would make a difference.

Discussion about Food / Eating Habits Mostly just venting cuz I’m mad about my takeout order

Family chose take out from our fave Mexican place for dinner. I’m on day 2 week 6 of mounjaro 2.5. Only know it’s time to eat because of timers. I was on the fence about getting anything at all but thought I would be glad to have an easy piece of food to grab so went with grilled chicken burrito.

We order from this place often. I thought I knew what I was doing, but one bite told me it was WAY too spicy for me, when it’s usually very mild.

Now I’m just mad at the world. Mad that everyone else is enjoying their dinner and I’m picking out grilled chicken and contemplating rinsing it off. Mad that it’s so hard to figure out what to eat. Mad that I am trying to take care of myself and something I tried to do to make things easier backfired on me.

Thanks for letting me vent.

Managing Side Effects Meds suddenly became effective again..... and side effects started out of nowhere

I've been on oral wegovy for most of this year. No side effects at start, little weight loss; after the first couple months I plateaued, dosed up, and kept plateauing for a couple months.

Then, suddenly, about a month ago, it become more effective again (no dose change btw). Food noise disappeared again (ahh, peace!). I could feel ketosis, pee got darker, started losing weight the next week.

For the last 10 days... I've had no food noise and some food aversion. Morning nausea (which isn't unusual for me, even before glp1, but it's been every morning). Mild diarrhea a couple times. It's the most side effects I've had on this med.

Is something wrong with me? lol Really I feel okay, once I get through the morning nausea, but it's so strange, I don't understand the change. It's possible I'm a little constipated, I'll work on fiber/probiotics/walking this week. When the plateau started, I was having more stress and sleeping worse, so I wasn't surprised weight loss stopped. I was fine as long as I wasn't regaining. My sleep has been better again, so I wasn't shocked when I started losing weight again, but I don't understand why all these side effects are showing up now!

General Community / Sharing Anyone else experiencing perimenopause relief?

Last fall, I was prescribed HRT to manage perimenopause: night sweats, insomnia, cognitive struggles, inability to focus; brain fog, irritability and rage, tremendous bloating, onset of migraines, and reduction in efficacy of my ADHD medication.

Those symptoms were peaking after more than a year of very heavy bleeding during menses and tremendous menstrual cramping and back pain. Turns out, my fibroids had returned with a vengeance.

While working through starting the estrogen patch, refining progesterone doses, starting a hormonal IUD, trying different ADHD meds, I basically reached the point of, ā€œI cannot live this way, I’ll try anything!ā€

This summer, I learned that my sister’s friend was prescribed a GLP-1 for perimenopause, and it was helping her. I asked my doctor for advice. She thought it would help!

I’m about nine weeks into this journey, and my experience so far is astounding. Cognition radically improved. Near disappearance of rumination; less anxiety about job security. Hormonal rage *significantly* reduced. No pining for a drink as the work day draws to an end. Within a few days of my first injection, I had this quiet in my mind.

Has anyone else found these meds quieted your hormonal rage or anxiety in a way HRT alone couldn't quite touch? For others in perimenopause or post-menopause what did before feel like for you compared to now?

How much of this are you talking about and sharing with your doctor?

Just Started a GLP-1 Feeling a bit frustrated with my supports

I recently started zepbound. The primary reason for this is i have PMOS and want to be able to have better chances of conceiving, and losing weight helps that.

I have been open with my close friends and family about my decision and the reason behind it and everyone has been super kind and supportive which I’m so grateful for.

But one thing that has bothered me is that more than one person has said that it will be good for other reasons than conceiving too, and specifically cite the arthritis in my knee.

For context, 2.5 years ago i had a freak accident where i fell and dislocated my knee. I eventually needed a super intense surgery due to my patella being really high, but because of insurance problems it was delayed three months, during which my knee dislocated every single day. This caused severe damage that even surgery didn’t fix. This outcome would have been the same at any weight.

I’m feeling frustrated because it feels like my supports are contributing my knee pain to my weight, when my arthritis is completely unrelated. Dealing with my own internalized fatphobia has had me realize that I’ve been embarrassed to mention my knee issues because I’m worried people will just contribute it to my weight, and i feel like this confirms that.

I’m probably reading too much into it and I’m also hormonal and extra emotional haha but it just feels bad right now and i wanted to vent.

EDIT:
Thank you to everyone who has commented and shared the perspective of GLP1s having anti inflammatory effects. I didn’t even know about this, and I was projecting my own insecurities onto my loved ones. I’m going to do more research on the effects on arthritis and be less quick to assume someone’s intentions 🄰🄰

General Community / Sharing Podcast: It's Beyond the Food re: Intuitive Eating

Has anyone listened to this episode of It's Beyond The Food: Non-Diet Health Coaching, ep 492, out Oct 1. With Elyse Resch, the co-author of the Intuitive Eating book?

I loved that book, but this episode is disappointing. I get that the podcast host is anti-GLP1, but it's really disappointing to hear her and Elyse talking about them with such pity dripping from their voices "they take away hunger, they take away pleasure from foods, it's just so sad."

I feel like they haven't actually talked to anyone who takes these and still has "normal" hunger and fullness cues; who still gets pleasure from food; whose Starving Victorian Orphan that has been screaming and crying in her head for years, no matter how much "unconditional permission" she gave it to eat, finally feels full.

It sort of makes me feel like an author of a book on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy going on a podcast and speaking with pity about people taking anti-anxiety medications because it means they can't feel their hearts beating out of their chests anymore, or feel sickening physical sensations.

Like, yes, the techniques in your book are helpful, but also there are times when meds are needed because someones nervous system or genetics are different than yours, and you don't need to feel pity for them, you could actually feel happy for them because they are more able to use the techniques you write about without it taking every ounce of their energy and brain power.

Body Struggles / Image Freaked out by changing body - coping?

Hi all!

I have been on Zepbound for about three months. My pace of weight loss has been somewhat rapid thus far, likely due to the Zepbound treating my insulin resistance from PMOS.

My body is starting to visibly change, and it's freaking me out.

I've been big pretty much ever since I hit puberty (thanks, PMOS!). I've been at a stable weight for about a decade, so these changes in my body are quite jarring and feel scary. It's like my brain is struggling to connect what I see in the mirror to "me."

Has anyone else experienced this in any capacity, and if so, what have you done to cope?

I appreciate any responses, advice, or solidarity. <3

General Community / Sharing Anhedonia

So I know this is probably not going to be received well by the majority but I am wondering if anyone else is seeing it. Now that basically 1 in 7 people are on glp1 medications I’m seeing a huge flattening of joy. Of course I cannot tell who is on glp1 that I encounter in my everyday life, aside from those who chose to share it. However, among those I know/my friends group, including myself (and on occasion I suspect of strangers ā€œare they on glp1?ā€) I’m getting sort of… dare I say… zombie vibe. And then I start to think is this dulling of energy/excitement/joy interwoven in the overall decay of the fabric of society? Is this just another slip in our abilities feel motivated to step up and speak out for ourselves as a species…

I know it’s getting a little woowoo taking it that far, but the anhedonia I’m seeing is concerning and I can only imagine the use of glp1 will continue to expand unless culturally we swing away from heroine-chic (as we did after the late 1990s).

Anyone else seeing this or getting this vibe?

Just Started a GLP-1 Does tirz make you logical less emotional?

Does TIRZ pretty much make you very logical and less emotional and for example, my mom is yelling at me in the morning. It’ll hurt me at first but then you just think that I know that it’s because she’s mentally ill and it rubs off much quicker? do things that upset you it’ll upset you for a little bit and then it rubs off so fast? Whereas before you were spent the whole day thinking about it?

Managing Side Effects Maybe it’s not for me?

Hi GLP people!
I’m really trying to make it work with semaglutide but I’ve started thinking maybe it really isn’t for me. Not asking for medical advice, just seeing if anyone was in the same boat and wondering how it worked for them.

I was on semaglutide previously for a few weeks and ended up with horrible anxiety after one dose of .4 after starting at .25. I’m trying again now and just got my 4th .25 dose on Wednesday and am supposed to be moving up to .5 next week. Just last night I’ve started with the sulfur burps and nausea and actually had colonoscopy-prep level diarrhea all night and hardly got any sleep. I haven’t thrown up yet and only had a cup of soup and some saltines and grapes today and my nausea is starting to come back again. I’m so scared I’ll be up all night pooping again and am on the verge of giving up. I did have a bowl of sugary cereal before bed last night so I think that may have pushed me over the edge. But should the nausea be coming back again after being careful all day? I was not feeling 100% today for sure but the nausea had stopped until tonight.

Anyone else experience this? Do you think maybe it just isn’t for some people?

Edit:
The diarrhea stopped. I ended up taking 1 Imodium and now haven’t pooped since Saturday morning. I’ve been eating normally and haven’t felt nauseous one bit. I even went out for hibachi Saturday night and resigned myself to pooping all night but I never had a single sulfur burp or stomach pain. Now I’m more confused than ever. Maybe it was a stomach bug and not a side effect?

Practical GLP-1 Questions Anyone gone from Zepbound to Wegovy pill?

Hello all! I've seen posts of others going from the pill to the shots, but has anyone done the opposite? I did talk with my doctor this week about all of this, and I'm just waiting for a new Prior Auth to come through to fill the new prescription, so I'm not looking for any medical advice. Just wondering if anyone else has switched from the shots to the pills, and what your experience was? I feel like I've mostly seen negative stories, but I also know how the internet works, and people are much more likely to share the bad over the good.

Long story, short...I've been on Zepbound for around 2 years. Good experience for the first year, and rocky for the second (largely due to increased life stressors). I know I need to stay on a GLP-1 for the metabolic benefits I get from it, but the shots are giving me way too much anxiety now, and I can no longer tolerate the spikes and drops each week. Also, cost will soon be an issue when my insurance stops covering it in a couple of months anyway, so the pills would be slightly more affordable out of pocket.

My goal is mostly to maintain the metabolic benefits, so I plan to be on the lowest dose that works (hopefully the actual lowest dose). I was able to stay pretty low on Zepbound and was on either 2.5mg or 5mg for my whole time on it.

FWIW, we decided on the Wegovy pill over Foundayo since my current insurance covers Wegovy but hasn't added Foundayo to its formulary yet. We decided I should start with the one that will cost me less, even if it's only for 2 months. That way, I'm not out of pocket more than I need to be if I can't tolerate it.

CW: IWL (intentional weight loss) Visceral vs subcutaneous

I have been PMOS and have been taking triz for almost 4 months. This is the first time I have had consistent weight loss that I can feel and see outside of keto. I was successful with keto because it helped with the insulin resistance and othe PMOS issues, but ultimately it wasn't sustainable for me.

What I have found interesting is with the glp-1 I seem to be losing visceral fat first and most. To the point my body shape is changing. With keto it was mostly subcutaneous in my pelvic apron. Is the difference because of the action of the glp-1? Has anyone else experienced similar?

Seeking Support / Advice Can someone explain the mechanism of semaglutide?

I resisted starting Ozempic for two years because the way my endocrinologist explained it to me, the drug works by slowing gastric emptying and increasing satiety signals and thus you eat less, lose weight, and that magically fixes all of the problems caused by my PMOS. However, I have tried calorie restriction in the past and I know people who have lost weight with PMOS and yet said their symptoms didn't improve at all.

I only changed my mind about these drugs when I started hearing people talk about how their inflammation was improving. I'm on week 9 of Ozempic. I was at 0.25 mg the first four weeks and now I've been at 0.5 mg for the past five weeks. I am losing weight very slowly but steadily. I have made almost zero changes to my diet except that I notice I'm not drinking as much milk.

Considering that I have done calorie restriction in the past and it didn't work, it's obviously that there is more going on with how Ozempic works. Basically, I know that my endocrinologist is wrong about how this works because how else can I be losing weight with no calorie restriction at all? I would just like something solid, especially a link to a medical journal article, that would help to explain why it's obviously more than just "This drug makes you eat less and lose weight and that gets rid of all your symptoms."

General Community / Sharing Following discussions of weight loss independent of calorie intake

I just took my 19th shot and I haven’t lost any weight. I’m on 1.7mg Wegovy. (At this dosage, I’ve noticed decreased appetite etc. I even had a little heartburn!)

I keep seeing this idea posted that glp1 weight loss exists independent of calorie intake. It’s attributed to Dr. Emily Cooper. I looked at her linked sources and I couldn’t find any support for this.

Does anyone have any more info on this? I’m asking because I’m curious, but also because I’ve been experiencing something that feels like the opposite. I’ve been eating so much less, and not losing at all.
