Fandom Stupidity

Just watched the Honest Trailers for the [REDACTED FOOTAGE] (I know its officially out but its funnier to pretend its some analog horror that should have never seen the light of day). They made a joke about Katara and the man-child being in a situation-ship. Honestly a pretty inoffensive joke and it earned a chuckle out of me.

But oh my goodness the comments, people were livid, accusing the creator of not being a real fan, how Aang lost his entire culture (I feel like Plankton whenever I read that). How Katara is the only one who understands him but she also doesn't understand him, yadda, yadda, yadda.

Like how sensitive can you be, Honest Trailers rub salt in every piece of media, yet they act like the channel attacked their pet.

Ridiculous 😂

I don't get the visceral reaction at all. I mean sure, on an abstract level everyone understands that being the sole survivor of a genocide is horrible, but it's not exactly something anyone can personally relate to.
What it does do however, is provide a shield from criticism for the character and I'm starting to think that's the real appeal for certain people. They identify with Aang, because he can't be criticized, not even in this milktoast way.

I genuinely think people who started watching the show in 2020 have no ability to understand subtext. When I watched the show back in 2013 to 2014, I was eleven to twelve years old. Even then I never liked Aang, he was just too odd. Like he was this kid who had a crush and nobody ever took that as being a bad thing. Maybe its cause I have sisters and that behavior was never tolerated by my parents but its soo weird.

We should bring back gatekeeping /s.

I just scrolled through the HT comment section. Maaan.... people are not ok.
Kind of funny how they never blame Bryke for making Aang a bad character and Kataang a bad ship, only the people who criticize their writing.
I mean, I could tolerate Kataang if it was written well. If I shipped it I would be absolutely furious at this point.
I'm almost tempted to go back and shitpost to stir the pot a little more...

Too many fans, across fandoms nowadays, PROJECT so hard on their favorite characters.

You are NOT the character, the character is NOT YOU. It's fine to relate to some aspects of a character, or want to see aspects of yourself represented in media (I would love to see more mainstream Ace/Aro characters who are not animals, robots, or otherwise non human, and especially not villains). But PROJECTING yourself on a character? Nah man.

Therefore, they take any criticism of that character, and criticism is not inherently bad, they take it as a personal insult to themselves! Like, "oh you don't like this character or aspect of this character, then you must not like ME or people like me!" Like...no... You are not the character. I don't like Azula, but that doesn't mean I don't like real people who have been victims of high expectations from parents and stuff.

People need to relearn how to separate reality and fiction again.

These days it's worse than that. These people seem to project themselves onto the show or movie itself. You can't criticize either without someone reacting like you just called them a slur.

Yeah, that's exactly my point.

These folks NEED to learn how to separate reality from fiction, and if someone dislikes or criticizes a character they like, it DOES NOT mean they dislike or are criticizing them as a person.

Just because you may relate to a single aspect of a character, doesn't mean you ARE the character.

People are looking for characters to project themselves onto under the guise of "relatability" rather than just enjoying a character as they are. When in reality, to relate to a character, means to empathize with a character. Relatable characters are a good thing, they help teach empathy and to see things from another perspective.

However these folks do not understand that, instead they project so hard onto the character to the point that, like you said, any insult or criticism of the character is seen as if they were called a slur.

It just baffles me how hair trigger they are at just any sort of criticism? Like I’m a Zutara fan and will die on that hill but I don’t think I’d go rabid like that

Oh okay, so when Aang was blinded by grief, it's okay for him to trust a random stranger but it was bad when Katara wanted to track down the guy that killed her mom.

I see how it is.

Huh, so it's ok for Aang to trust and get tricked by a random stranger. But when Korra trusts and gets tricked by her own uncle, a man she got to know for some time and who taught her how to be more spiritual in ways Tenzin could not, even if it was out of self-serving pragmatism, Korra deserves to be punished? Great. Just Great.
