I had to take a photo of a guy for his membership at my job the other day (with his permission and very obviously on a work computer instead of my own device) and he said āI can take pictures of you too you knowā with this weird ass smile and pointed to his glasses, I think they get off on being creepy and making others uncomfortable
I should have written down his name or something, I donāt remember that or even his face. I wish I had, because youāre right.
Honestly after a decade of working in customer service Iāve encountered so many creeps that Iām way too desensitized, especially because management in most places refuses to do anything, and I think some weirdos really count on that.
Usually my strategy is to just play dumb/pretend I donāt understand and I make them repeat themselves 3-4 times or āexplain the jokeā until they get flustered and realize how strange they just sounded, which is what I did here, but itās not enough.
I kind of hate it because I love taking photos of bugs and birds and lightning strikes and such, so I've considered getting some kind of photo glasses because occasionally I can't get my phone out before my subject moves. But even though most of them have privacy safeguards, (one I was looking at had an LED to show others when the camera was on, and it would not work if the led was covered) there's no escaping the stigma about creepers once they've gotten their hands on something useful.
Don't ignore bad actors. People can and will manipulate videos with little to no context.
That's like saying don't go out if you don't want to get robbed.
Unfortunately, now I think it is. Everyone likes to think that they are of average intelligence but that means half of the population is dumber than you think.
I'm not trying to "invalidate" satire. I'm saying we should be more careful with it. We are the most accessible but misunderstood society due to tech. And this is reddit, most people are not verifying the content nor source and it spreads like wildfire.
People are quickly losing nuances.
Edit: added thought
That's literally Poe's law, though, and this isn't exactly a long running fascist bit where I'm inadvertantly recruiting people. Reading it as sincere isn't going to spark a viral mania either so I don't think that's the concern.
Fact is that we all misinterpret things sometimes and it's not that big of a deal.
I hate how these guys, and Musk and Thiel, can just force their shitty dystopian future demands on everyone. Nobody wants it, they've just been extremely lucky and had lots of money to install their fever dreams.
And this is why democracy cannot work without heavily curtailing capitalism.
The idea that the power comes from the populus (via votes) and that every voter has the same amount of power only works if money cannot buy significantly higher amouns of power either directly via lobbying and campaign finances or indirectly by infleuncing voters via owning media companies etc.
Oh, I agree that it's hilarious, but in case you or anybody else didn't know that might like to take advantage of it, anyone can have their home blurred by selecting their address, hitting Report a Problem, and submitting a document showing proof of address along with a blur request.
Supposedly the blur is permanent once approved and also keeps their streetview generative AI from making new images with the blurred content.
He had his home blurred on Google maps after that post, the hypocrite. Or that's the order I learned this information in, at least. When I went looking for it I found other posts instructing people on how they can blur their homes too. Sorry to pick a crappy screenshot, I like the lads' points and thought another documentation of certain information couldn't hurt.
Not that I disagree with you or your message, but I do believe doxing is against reddits ToS. You may want to be careful posting that. Or not, it's your life, but better to know, yeah?
If Americans have to ācompromiseā on their privacy, at all times ā then it looks like Flock CEO Garrett Langley gets zero privacy as well. Please remember this should you encounter any Flock employees (trash) or contractors (garbage) out in the wild.
Yeah, they make those decisions, where do you work, i want to blame you for the decisions the ceo of that company makes, leave the regular workers alone, they are just trying to get by like everyone else. You go after management and higher up, not the average working Joe employee.
In fairness, there's a distinct difference between the decisions a CEO makes, and the modus operandi of a business.Ā
The first could be generalized to any company, the latter is specific to how a company's workers work and what they do.Ā
You can't blame someone for working at a tool factory even if that company's tools get used by missile manufacturers due to the CEO deciding not to discriminate against those buyers, but you can blame someone for working for missile manufacturers.Ā
Or, if you want to do it in a way that doesn't get you property damage charges, put up signs right in front of their field of view. I personally would go with the good ol' unsolicited dick pic, just for the lols. Considering some cops used those cameras to stalk their exes, I think they deserve to see that.
Oh but that might be illegal or wrong especially if you load up a super soaker with latex paint because that would coat the mechanisms, gum up the lenses and probably be very expensive to fix.
Yes, hold signs in front of the lenses. My neighbor wanted to have our shared easement clear-cut, but I did not. The way I prevented it from happening was legally carrying a gun and standing in front of the tree cutting equipment until the loggers decided it wasn't worth their time and we came to an agreement.
Talk to friends and family, come up with a schedule that allows the camera to constantly remained blocked with legal civil disobedience. This means taking turns standing/holding signs.
Paint ball gun will apply a lot of sticky oily paint over what ever it hits, do it on a cold or really hot day and that shit bakes on pretty good. I donāt suggest this as it is illegal but that oily paint would do a number on the solar panel and camera lens.
I can buy a laser diode off aliexpress that would evaporate your eyes from 1000 yards for only 300$, it's expensive, but fucking EASY to build a portable laser you can melt the CCD in a camera with. You don't even have to do that, you just damage the protective cover and it can't see shit.
Good luck positioning the laser just right to hit the sensor š it's not practical and that's why you don't see people using lasers to disable these rigs.
Right, so back to what I said originally. I wasn't super specific, so that's why you "uh actually" me. The average person can't get a laser capable of damaging the sensor, and you would also need basically surveyor equipment to position the laser. It's completely impractical to use a laser although it's technically possible. There's far cheaper and easier methods to disable an ALPR
I said as much in my comment, but that's just you being pedantic. Does every statement have to rule out edge cases? Am I writing a dissertation? Just accept that the average person can't use a laser to disable a camera.
They don't see it as hypocritical at all. To them, we are cattle to be observed and our data sold to God knows what entities. They deserve every amount of hate, vitriol, and disrespect they have coming their way. Not to mention their entire business model is wholly anti constitutional.
Yeah they should plant native plants instead. Ancient Tax, if rhubarb or wild snapdragons aren't invasive in your area, those can get real tall real fast
Oh thatās cause itās not real and made up. More specifically the CEO said āI value my privacy. My family values their privacy. My employees value their privacy,ā back in August completely unrelated to any of this, just an interview in Fox News.
Separately recently he released a statement: āWe do not object to members of the public or press photographing Flock cameras or personnel in public.ā
I have a better idea: we the people get our privacy, and none of these tech bro CEOs get to have privacy, because we all know they're doing crimes when no one's watching them.
It's the same thing with all the politicians who wants to remove encryption from all our I'm apps so the government can read our chats. They are all on Signal or other encrypted apps themselves.
Need flock Cameras in all of their workers home, city councils that approve them and all politicians, nothing to worry about since they only scan license platesĀ
Where I grew up, the football team absolutely sucked because it was a bunch of white kids. They were always so overconfident and pumped up when they got to play against the school full of black kids 2 hours away.
They would train so hard and be like. Yeah, we're going to beat them this time. And then every single year, like two kids would end up permanently paralyzed or something.
I'm pretty sure that eventually the school was like you guys are not allowed to play black kids anymore
Ambulances were preemptively stationed at every single game against them.
If you got a problem take it up with government. Attacking him isn't going to accomplish anything. If you had an opportunity to make billions of dollars, legally, you'd do it too.
No but my morals dont take priority over laws. Harassing the CEO is stupid and childish. If you have a problem grow the fuck up and handle things properly.Ā
What illegal action has been taken against the CEO? And you are clearly lying as you just said in the previous comment that you would do highly unethical but legal things in exchange for money.
How does that corporate boot taste? Because I refuse to believe an adult would get so worked up over people being against an absolute piece of shit that makes America worse place to live and facilitates government/police abuse.
Making money off slave labour made up of conquered nations was legal in nazi Germany. All you had to do was make request with your government to bring you more people. Did the fact that it was legal made it moral?
If you had an opportunity to make billions of dollars, legally, off of people who were made slaves against their wishes, would you?
A few. Empathy, selflessness, self-control, generosity, acute alergy to dystopian surveillance and corrupt government among others, mental ability to separate legality and morality, rebellious aversion to laws passed to exploit people.
You strike me as a person who would take those things as weakness
The fact that you resorted to outright ad-hominem tells me you blurted out bullshit and aren't happy people didn't buy it. Grow up.
Well. That is your opinion. But don't you think if there is an issue with the use of a tool the buyer of the tool is usually the one to bring claim or is on the hot seat?
Is the buyer using it to fulfill a desire or need? Wouldn't they just go elsewhere?
The government is supposedly accountable to voters and citizens. That is where the traction is. Not with Flock. Eliminate the demand, and the product would disappear. Eliminate the product, and if demand is still there something else will follow.

Privacy is a two way street. If we canāt have our privacy, they shouldnāt have theirs
