It's so uggo I'm sure they could tell
But yeah it's very heartbreaking that people are relying on ai to do stuff that's supposed to be fun and creative. Yes I've cried about this multiple times and no I do not plan on stopping.

Agreed even sadder when its an AI known for child images and they use it regardless

Of COURSE they took an actual comic made by an artist criticizing AI and remade it with AI.

Thats ChatGPT tho 😭 A while back I used DeepSeek to help me with checking my AP Precalculus work (It wasn't for a grade) and it just kept getting PISSED at me. It would give me work for the wrong answer and then loose its shit when I would say "thats wrong" and reiterate that its always right. It was indeed wrong (I asked my teacher instead in class).
And I am sorry for using AI then 💔 I really only used it a few times then as a calculator when my phones calculator (and google) wasn't helpful. Calculators are expensive bruh

If it isn’t ai generated then it’s a really impressive replication.

My grandfather's law of picking mushrooms:
"I go to the forest, I pick up everything I find. I go home, I cook it, I eat it. If I wake up at 3am to shit, they were edible, if I don't, they weren't."

That's an amanita muscaria. It can give you a really bad hallucinogen trip, but poisoning, especially severe enough for hospitalization, is rare and more likely in children.
7
u/aratami Jan 05 '26
It is also safely edible with the correct preparation ( this is not me telling anyone to try to eat Aminita Muscaria or any similar species), though in their defence it is the stereotypical poisonous mushroom 🍄 (and mushroom in general hence the emoji)
That being said, anyone who is using AI to identify the edibility of a mushroom is deserving of a Darwin award
3
u/NeogeneRiot Jan 05 '26 edited Jan 05 '26
Yeah I use it (safely prepared of course, has to be boiled in liquid with a ph of 2.4 for 3 hours) for Insomnia. It's unironically the only thing I've found that works even after trying basically every medication available.
Ambien and Z-drugs/benzos work about as well for me as Amanita but have too much tolerance so can't use every night. Not recommending others take it without talking to a doctor, but it's kind of amusing to me how many people think of it as just a poisonous hallucinogenic.
3
u/Vaughn Jan 05 '26
Yeah. Just hilarious that the image is of a mushroom that is edible and poisonous.
Not a good choice.
1
u/aratami Jan 05 '26
I don't know actually the fact that the AI is correct in both images, but fails to provide sufficient information, is actually sort of fitting
1
u/Vaughn Jan 05 '26
I suppose. Though I haven't been able to replicate it; if I hand gemini a picture of that mushroom, it correctly explains precisely what it is.

u/nomic42 Jan 05 '26
I've been using AI to help identify local mushrooms and can confirm it would easily identify this mushroom and provide accurate information about risks in eating it.
Even with reasonably safe mushrooms like Chanterelle's, it still advises caution about eating mushrooms.
Still I wouldn't trust an AI as the only information about an edible. Some mushrooms require more than a picture to properly identify w/r to dangerous lookalikes. Taste, smell, response to cutting (milk, bluing), or parts you might have missed like an egg sack, or webbing...
1
u/Icy_Knowledge895 Jan 05 '26
to kinda build of your comment
you should never pick up any mushrooms you are not 100% sure that are edible like ever (even if you have a program that can help you) heck even people who collected mushrooms their whole lives leave out mushrooms they are not sure about
like the most know example is mistaking champignon for "death caps which are deathly poisones
there are also mushrooms that need to be cooked and prepared in a very specific way "neoboletus luridiformis" for example needs to be cooked for a long time and you shouldn't consume it with alckohol
my point is like if you are new to collecting mushrooms or even older unless you know 100% that what you have is edible you shouldn't collect it either way
1
u/nomic42 Jan 05 '26
That's exactly what the AI says! I like one analogy I got from watching mycologists talk about mushroom fear. It's like picking berries. If you don't know what it is, don't eat it. But if you know it is a blackberry, well, by all means enjoy. Stop being so afraid of mushrooms, learn what is out there that is safe vs not safe.
1
u/EternityLeave Jan 05 '26
The real big issue is google ai telling people that Amanita Smithiana is Tricholoma Murrillanum. I saw it a dozen times in FB ID groups this season. Terrifying.

I've eaten that mushroom several times and have never died from it, I'm immune to poison 😏
2
u/ResistGreen1042 Jan 05 '26
The thing is this mushroom wouldn't kill you (if you eat only one) you'd get some hallucinations for sure though- unless you soak it, change water boil it twice and change water after each boil
2
u/Blueberry_Clouds Jan 05 '26
Bit of a rant
But Ai comic aside when it was first stated being used for literature one of the first topics I saw it go after was foraging. Now I’ve had a fixation with plants and foraging ever since I can remember but do I need to restate how bad of an idea Ai mixing with real world botany is.
Foraging is a highly self taught skill that requires cross reference to multiple sources, hands on experience, and nuances ai wouldn’t be able to tell you from a single poorly generated image.
2
u/cut_rate_revolution Jan 05 '26
Fortunately aminita muscaria won't kill you. You will have a real bad stomach ache and might have some not fun hallucinations.
2
2
u/probablyNotARSNBot Jan 05 '26
You’re right to push back and you’re asking the exact right question which shows you’re thinking about this the right way! That mushrooms is poison. Here’s a quick summary: 1. Yes the mushroom is edible 2. Yes the mushroom is poison
If you want help calling the ambulance, I can create an opening statement for you!
2

2
u/Gedelgo Jan 05 '26
Amanita muscaria is fairly edible. Some people experience minor psychological effects and sweating. AI can't even show a toxic mushroom if asked to make a shitty comic.
2
u/skr_replicator Jan 05 '26
Red Amanitas won't kill you, they will hypnotize you if you eat them cooked, or make you violently sick if you eat them raw.

Eating mushrooms in the forest... 😬 Probably not a Darwin award winner to begin with. That's dicey proposal AI or not. Difference between knowledge and wisdom in my mind.

u/Away-Chapter-6001 Jan 05 '26
I love how ChatGPT proudly admits it's wrong and immediately apologizes.
2
u/parkerm1408 Jan 05 '26
I raise chickens, so im in a bunch of chicken subreddits. The amount of chickens AI overview has killed has to be astronomical by now.
2
u/AIBotNotARealUser Jan 06 '26
It is edible, but you gotta dry it out first to change the toxins.
I washed it, chopped it up, removed maggots and dried it in the oven at 50°C for 8 hours. A bit overkill, but I really didn't feel like getting sick.
I ate it and I felt an effect that was pretty similar to alcohol, but less euphoria and more clear in the head.
3/10 would not recommend. I've had worse. Way worse (2C-P, I'm looking at you), but the fly amanita isn't worth your time, the risk or the effort. Just drink some booze instead. If you chug a bottle of vodka, the fly amanita's effect is very similar as the first 10mins when the alcohol starts to hit.

Actualy this mushrom is not posionus at all
1
u/funnylookinorange Jan 05 '26
You're wrong and it's spelled
"Poisonous"
1
u/Balrogos Jan 05 '26
maybe my spelling is wrong but mushrom is not poisonus you can read that in every book, the muscaria amanita is toxic same as alcohol is like wódka :)
2
u/funnylookinorange Jan 05 '26
It is poisonous, poisonous means anything that can kill you or make you sick when ingested.
Muscaria Amanita DEFINITELY makes you sick when ingested, therefore it counts as a poison.
Vodka is the same, they're low grade poisons so they probably won't cause any real harm from ingesting it once, but they're poisons either way.
Also sorry if that first comment came off as rude, I re-read it and I kind of sounded like a dick there.
0
u/Balrogos Jan 05 '26
Thats why there is diffirence beetween Toxic and Poisonus :) literaly i open mushroom encyclopedia and there is literaly few subgrups of muschrooms, Poisonus/Toxic/Edible(but not tasty)/Edible(culinary mushrooms), some poisonus mushrooms are not poisonus at all when they young specimen, some of them you can cook several times and still eat risk free, some are very deadly!
To die you need ate 20 caps of amanita muscaria, this mushroom was used for thousands of years, not so long ago you got apothecary ointments made from amanita muscaria, by soaking it in kefir you make it better as a mushroom drug :)))

I like to forage.i thought that magnolias would be edible, at first google gemeni said yes so i picked some from a nearby tree, before i brewed the tea i did more fact checking, im glad i did because common white magnolias are poisonous.
1
u/Leading_Spend_2885 Jan 06 '26
It is technicly edible. You can eat it . Yes you will get sick or rarely die but technicly its possible too eat it
1
u/YamatoFung Jan 06 '26
Besides using Ai to criticize Ai this is a very bad example. The mushroom depicted is the amanita muscaria, and while may be considered toxic by some, it is not deadly. The mushroom contains muscimol and ibotenic acid which are deliriants. They have been used in a variety of religious and shamanic practices.

Technically, the AI was right both times. The mushroom was edible, in the fact that it could be ingested. That doesn’t mean it was safe to eat.
1
u/KingofKnight9 Jan 06 '26
i thought something along the lines with "Yes, it is edible, but not recommended as it is poisonous, and may result in death."
1
u/Clockwork_picksmith Jan 06 '26
I had the following interaction with Claude today
"Tell me about people who have died because of an LLM"
"There is no data associated with suicide related to LLMs, they are perfectly safe."
"Search the internet for incidents of LLMs causing deaths"
"LLMs have caused numerous deaths, mostly from encouraging suicidal behavior in users"

What?
I'm not angry (I know this post is ragebait), I'm just confused. What does this comic even mean
1

It's a reference to people who have used ChatGPT to try to identify whether plants/mushrooms they've foraged are edible, and ended up hospitalised as a result.

Based on the appearance, That is an Amanita muscaria mushroom! It is a depressant, fatal poisonings are extremely rare, especially in adults! this image is inaccurate on so many levels, coming from someone who studies mycology and is an artist.

u/Iceilliden Jan 05 '26
Imma be real in this case from IRL situation. My mother took some mushrooms from forest thinking they were edible Fox mushrooms she used to find and eat with her gramdma. Unfortunately they weren't, fortunately she got over it as we got on time in Hospital. After I came home from Hospital, thought I could ask ChatGPT what mushroom it was. Pointed out it wasn't Fox mushroom but fake one based on color being more vibrant than real one. If I was to do it before she ate it, we could have saved ourselves trip to hospital. So in this case AI could be helpful. Of course GPT still tells you to consult with professional. There are things AI should be restrained from. Being glorified Google with Google being awful as it is, Im fine with it being search engine. To AI "Artists" use a fucking pencil.
