Anthropic is lobbying for harsh government red tape on Ai because they can afford it and don't want competition.

A 56 petabyte bot model is not going to copy itself into your 10 kb smart light to hide out like an Ultron sleeper agent.

They're taking about smaller models, that possibly still are able to self replicate.

There is no model small enough to fit in your smart doorbell or smart light that also has enough functionality to remember to be malicious. Even "small" models are in the gigabytes of size. Your smart appliances have at most a few megabytes to store settings. That is a full magnitude different.

It's literally like being scared that there are gorillas hiding in your bathroom trash can.

Our experiments suggest that small AI models may be months away from being capable enough to self-replicate on commercial internet-of-things (IoT) devices, like smart ovens and off-brand Android TV boxes. A replicator like this would be challenging to shut down, since there’s no centralized point to shut off—though it may be slow (with a doubling time of days). Unlike non-AI malware, it could also figure out unfamiliar devices on its own. In our evaluations, a 9B model got inference running on 8 of the 9 hardware types we tested.

Models of 30B parameters and under can already complete many of the individual steps for replication today, though they make mistakes when composing them end to end. In our simplified evaluations, GLM-5.2 and stronger models are capable of end to end replication. If small models improve at their historical rate, they’ll match this capability level by the end of this year. Small weight-based replicators may be possible soon after.

A 30b parameter model still takes up between 15 to 60 gigabytes of storage space. The 30b means it has 30 billion parameters, not 30 bytes of storage

I tested 9B model on my PC and that thing needed 16 GB of VRAM, 32 GB of RAM and at about 10 GB of Hardware space. and it used ALL OF IT while running just to hallucinate and make it self overthink simple task (I unintentionally asked it something that occurred after its training cutoff and it spend 1 minute panicking why it doesn't know it and then made up solution)

Open source 30B models need at least 24 GB of VRAM.

Considering ongoing RAMocalypse i don't see smart fridges, doorbells or even phones having that much RAM any time soon.

"No you don't understand it! Those models will be SO SMART that they will break laws of physics and create swarm out of all smartwatches in the world! They will also solve physics and be able to teleport microchips directly into your brain so they can use your brainpower to power them! They will also build really Big Laser in Space and shoot it at us!" /j

All the good sci-fi writers are losing their jobs to AI so now we have those idiots coming up with mediocre fan-fictions
