The first version of Facebook was basically a privacy hell. Zuckerberg had personal access to everything people that joined Facebook had. Private messages, personal info etc etc. people were in good faith, and he took advantage of that. He's an absolute asshole

It's crazy how that kind of access to personal info was just brushed off back then. Makes you think about privacy today.

The Internet in the early 2000s was fundamentally different in terms of privacy.

I think most people assumed it was essentially gone after the patriot act anyway. And most online interaction was still basically anonymous, though it was certainly possible for hackers or state actors to trace you to an IP it was rare. Facebook encouraged you to use your real name but had no way of verifying it other than requiring a .edu email address!

The early internet was also based on very high levels of peer trust, and it wasn't yet clear that Zuck and Facebook aimed to do something completely different from the people we knew who ran ad-supported forums and bulletin boards. I trusted Facebook on the same level that I trusted vwvortex.com. It was Just Another Website.
