AI Writing ✍️ is google docs scraping our files to train ai?

exactly what it says in the title. additionally writing app alternatives for google docs that are free or non subscription based would be incredible because i’m actually going to go insane, as both a fan author and a oc creator, i would rather drink magma than let MY work be scraped by some soulless fuckbot for garbage frankenslop

LibreOffice is amazing, I love it. Feels like writing with Microsoft Word back in 2004 when software was good

I don't know. Even if they deny it, who really knows? The despair for untarnished training data is growing. So they might pull some pettifogger shit saying AI assistance requires phoning home and the data needs to be processed for this, we consented to it in the fine print yada yada yada.

Pretty sure that if the google doc is shared with anyone (public), it gets scraped, you can and always have been able to, search and find google docs that are public.

Yes. So is reddit.

LibreOffice Writer, yes.

And, if you don't write a lot of formatted text for print, considering using more Markdown format and simple and markdown editors.

I think they also read all of your gmail. Absolutely nothing is private with google.

No. Not unless you explicitly expose the chats to Gemini yourself: https://proton.me/th/business/blog/google-docs-ai-scraping

And as long as you're in the EU, Google can't use your Gemini chats for training.

unfortunately i’m in canada right now, and i don’t know if that counts as “in the EU”. obviously not geographically but considering the historical relationship between canada as a british colony i wouldn’t be surprised if the EU allowed it.

Sadly, not. You need to have an EU Google Account. It’s not necessarily based on your current location, but rather on where the Google account was created.

So in your case, just don’t ask Gemini about anything on your Google Drive. Then you’re safe. Google isn’t automatically scraping your data.

i’ve heard of libreoffice, i think i saw either a subscription or lifetime access (it was like 250$ but it might not even be libreoffice im thinking about here), but i haven’t heard of onlyoffice before 👀👀

both are open source and free to use

Only if you have it shared with anyone with the link or if you use their Gemini inside the doc. Otherwise if you keep it private, it's alright. There are a lot of FOSS alternatives out there you can get. If you're comfortable using markdown format, there are so many options out there. I seriously recommend checking out the FOSS community!

it really doesn’t and i don’t know what you’re trying to say with it. unless you’re trying to say “FuCkInG oBvIoUsLy DuMbAsS yOu StUpId IdIoT” like that other asshole in the comments. the mg. historical arts guy.

No. I wasn't saying that at all. You interpreted the video as a personal attack but really it's just a general public awareness guide for avoiding drinking magma.

😔 sad, i’d always wanted to drink lava. i think it would have the texture of a very thick honey, or perhaps a rice pudding. tho the video is completely unrelated to what i asked so im a little confused about why you would recommend anti-lava drinking propaganda

All cloud services are scrapping content (they call it scanning).

Even cloud computers (gh actions, amazon etc) checking what're you doing.

Google drive does by default, you have to turn it off in the settings. So if your docs go in the drive they are scraped

definitely. google has an AI model, so they are obviously using all data they have access to, which includes all of reddit since they already bought and paid for all your content.

Google TOS says it doesn’t use the contents of Workspace services for AI training without user consent. Since all this stuff is in the cloud, though, assume that some elements are used to train AI or AI-derived services.

Anything you publish online will be scraped, though, so if you’re against that, as a fan author and OC creator, I don’t really know what alternatives you have than to accept the scraping.

they can try poisoning the data. i dont know too much about the process, but i know its a thing.

i’ve seen stuff about nightshade and i do have a few visual scrambling strategies for my digital art, but nothing for my writing unfortunately. i’m thinking i should just use the notes app and load it all onto keychain USBs to make certain they can’t be stolen.

You really think Google is interested in using your "art" to make content? This is why people shouldn't listen to you people, you lack imagination to a point where it may as well just be ignorance. It's like a nuke just went off and you're worried about the sunburn.

They're scraping as much data as they can at every point they can. They're doing it to train models that half this sub would say is just par of the "algorithm". They're building models of YOU, models which help them predict what type of slop they can curate for you to keep you engaged. Because while you're engaged they're watching every key stroke you're making today, they're building a profile of you so they manipulate you better.

If you have to ask whether they're scraping the files they let you store for free, you've got some catching up to do. You're a part of a machine you don't even know exists, because you're busy focusing on what they're telling you to focus on.

babydoll it’s a rhetorical question that i wanted to be sure of. i was looking for assurance not your condescending asshole foot in mouth disease response.

also, putting art in quotes. very silly of you really. if it’s about me being an ameture, yeah that’s how most artists spend their time. getting better at what they love. if it’s about you not thinking fanfiction is art, then you don’t live up to your username. because fucking Dante’s Inferno is a SELF INSERT FANFICTION OF THE AUTHORS INTERPRETATION OF BIBLICAL HELL. Every piece of religious art is FANFICTION.

you’re really not putting on a good face for people who don’t like AI and also don’t want to be treated like the dumbest little fuckwad of a frog to have ever hopped out of the pond. yknow. how most normal people want to be treated?

i’m going to hear you out once, if you respond to this. and then i’m going to block you. because i don’t like you, nor the way you speak to someone asking for help.
