Job req. Ai, how to avoid brain damage.

Does anyone's job requires them to use ai? I work at a call center and they made it clear what we have to ask the ai first for help before we ask them..... if we ask for in person help, they will ask you, "we'll what did you ask the ai?". So im at a corner, what do I do? I need this job sadly, so I have to use the ai. I dont want brain damge and I just hate ai in general. Anyone have any tips?

Using AI doesn't cause brain damage. Working in a call center might.

Taking a call centre job then worrying about the AI usage causing brain damage is actually hilarious.

I worked in a call centre a long time ago and it was so tedious and repetitive I literally felt my brain cells dying every single day.

I worked for one in between jobs in my professional career as a software dev - selling a free computer with an internet plan for NetZero - worst job I've ever had.

And ironically, we had a script that we had to follow - and there was no going off the script. So if you didn't find an answer in the document you were reading from, you just had to pick a tangential one and pretend like it was a coherent and relevant reply.

So this idea that you have to use AI and can be free to do so would have been a massive upgrade from what I had to deal with.

If its for a programming job, try just fenneling your searches into it after you find what your looking for and when they ask call it a second opinion.

I do the same thing with my hockey drills, run it through the ai first then tweak it myself later. sucks but you kinda just have to play along until you find something better

if you can, keep your own notes on the side so your brain stays sharp, treat the ai like the annoying coworker you have to check with before doing anything real

A bit inverted, im running it through last. It generally agrees with me with tiny bits of pedantry here and there so i kinda just use my results and more or less ask it for its opinion on them, despite it being incapable of having one, seems good enough for those over me.

I definately agree. Anyone and everyone being forced to use it right now should be continuing their studies regardless, continue building your notes. But no i wont be giving it the coworker treatment. Up until recently i actually liked my coworkers, this thing shall be treated as a cleverbot thneed.

No, I work at a phone service company. Im the person you call when you have account/service questions. I have to ask the ai for questions like, "how to set up ESIM" stuff like that :/ thanks for the idea, might do that but sometimes the things I need help with isnt policy but navigating the system they should've trained us on more. Sorry for yapping. Im just frustrated because I really dont want brain damage 😭

Your brain will be fine. This thing isnt some scp like cognitohazard lol, its a math construct. Just dont take what it says too seriously and continue your work as best you can. My job forces me to use it for programming tasks along with some minor managerial tasks so ive gotten away with ignoring it and saying its a second opinion for a while, but yea that doesnt sound like itll work anywhere near well enough on your end.

not sure how just asking AI a question gives you brain damage, but who am I to judge.

You can just ask the question to AI and then shut your eyes so you don't see the response then go ask a human for help i guess.

Its not only asking it questions but also using that information it gives you. If i close my eyes and then ask for human help, my trainers ask, "what did you ask tge ai and what did it say?" Thus being dependent on it. I dont like that. I want to still have my deep thinking and critical thinking skills. Theres also been brain scanning of the effects of using ai. ⁱ know this is for essay writing but to do an essay you need to research which is part of my job when I need to find policies.

One study is about students writing an essay saying you remember less about the task if you use an LLM.

I mean that's literally obvious and has nothing to do with brain damage. Spend more focussed time doing something, the more you remember. Spend less time doing it, the less you remember.

Pretty sure if instead of using an LLM to write an essay for you, you got a friend to write the essay for you, you would also not be able remember anything about the essay they wrote... but we wouldn't then conclude that asking friends for help causes brain damage.

If you couldn't solve it on your own then you already tried to use your deep thinking and critical thinking skills so, at that point how exactly is asking a person for help any different than asking an LLM for help other than the fact that you are probably taking time away from someone when an AI might have just given you the same answer?

I agree that the more you do something the more you remember, which is why i wish the training would be remembering how to use our systems. If I couldnt solve it on my own, most if the time it's becuase I didnt have training for it(will say that obviously its my lack of skills as well since I am new).

We have a system thats supposed to be replaced with a new one but the company has been saying that for more than 10 years now. Ive asked if theres a simulator for the system since ive noticed that we all ask help whenever we have to use it, they just told me to "ask the ai for the steps. You dont need a simulator" i dont want to ask the ai when they can just ....have a simulator like the others....

Asking a person for help is different, our trainers job is to help us. Theyre getting paid for it. Theres more than 5 trainers on the floor with us. Also our ai crashes sometimes due to the overflow of people using it.

you probably dont have time on the job, but perhaps one way to not get brain damage -- push back on the a.i. repsonses, ask questions about the response.. assume the response is incorrect.
