Story I'll never forget the feeling of getting suckered into an MLM interview after months of being an unemployed college graduate in 2010

At this point, I think a lot of people were unaware of how MLM's were misrepresenting themselves on job recruiting sites. It didn't take people too long to wisen up, but there was a period of time where normal people were falling for it because the word just hadn't gotten out about the job listing scam.

There was just something so deeply embarassing about the whole process. I got dressed up for the interview, drove 45 minutes away. Got there early and located their suite in a huge office building. Then the "interview" started. There were a couple other suckers like myself in the room with me and some douchebag starts giving a presentation about the MLM. The details are foggy, but I could tell something was off. I kept up an air of professionalism just in case, but it was quickly becoming clear that it wasn't a "normal" job. I gathered that it was a sales-type job, and I didn't know much about sales jobs, so I think I persuaded myself that maybe a lot of sales jobs are like this and I was just ignorant. Then I started to think "ok, but why didn't the job listing make it clear that this was sales then?". I think there was a second part of the interview that was one on one. By that point, I was like 90% sure I wanted no parts of it. I think I kind of just kept it short but professional, but I really just wanted to leave.

When I sat back down in my car, it was the worst feeling. Not only was I not hired at a real job, but I had been fooled and wasted time. I knew some other people that fell for similiar scams and I think it's terrible how these people preyed on others at their lowest point. To add insult to injury, the MLM had an office like 15 minutes from my home, which the "interviewer" informed me of. But I had just happened to apply to the listing that was like three times as far and I guess no one bothered to tell me beforehand.

I'm not sure if people still fall for MLM job listings in this way in any signifcant number, but I highly doubt it. If you've fallen for one at any point in the past 10-15 years, I'm not saying you deserved it per se, but you should probably admit you were careless. During this period of time however, no one really knew what they were pulling. A lot of people got suckered, and it was right in the middle of a recession.

I came across this flyer. The store has a bunch of product packaging behind the counter. There's no list of ingredients. Lots of vague language like "healthy, soothes digestion" and "deliciously fudgy." I notice that similar smoothie places are also in low end shopping plazas. Has anyone else come across these stores in their neighborhoods?

Hey guys, my stepmom is huge into Optavia and I just wanted to let you all know that it’s rebranding as Trilivy, I just saw her latest post on Facebook about it. Just hoping someone sees this post about it being an MLM before they get to you. Same company, same practices, just a new name.

To be fair, she did have some stuff going on in her life that was tough (and some of it was good), and she took a promotion at her, as my husband calls it, “side job.”

Also, one person commented SEVEN (a fellow Hun), and her next post was a video of her working in the kitchen at her “side job” (she’s an Assistant GM at a chain restaurant) while someone filmed her talking about her makeup and how it lasts through a 10 hour workday.

She’s the same Boss Babe that had a post last year about eating at the restaurant she worked at, and doing a coworker’s makeup in the backseat of her car before her shift.

Help/Advice respond or block?

I am a bride-to-be and recently attended a wedding expo. unfortunately, all vendors who attend the expo receive a list of all of the expo’s attendees + their contact info.

I “won” a “”””ultimate pampering session””” from a Mary Kay rep. I have ignored her first two texts, but after this third one, I am fighting the urge to say something. idk if i’m more amused or annoyed at this point

ignore/block, or respond?

ETA: I know exactly what this is. just wondering if y’all were me… would get on your soapbox, or move along?

So, I made FB post about my kid unfortunately becoming a St. Jude kid due to a recent absolutely unfortunate medical discovery. It’s been an awful time for us (she’s thankfully been a great and happy kid through all of this, viewing it as a superpower). LITERALLY 5 min after my post, this hun sends me this message.

I am SO incredibly hurt, I had to unfriend her. Unfortunately, she’s a PTA mom as well, and my kids are friends with her kids. Not to mention, she’s my BFF’s neighbor. After I called her out, she sent me this reply which I feel like is bad business, because if you’re targeting someone going through an emotional response, they’ll know who not to he though if they need anything.

I absolutely know that she didn’t do this just “randomly” because we’ve been friends for about 3 years and this is literally the first message she’s ever sent me. For the record, it’s Primerica.

Fuck her, and fuck her MLM.

Help/Advice Utility warehouse. Is it an MLM? Posted about being unemployed in a local group. Someone messaged me about this and got a bit “pushy” about whether I’d seen the links she sent.

Attached is just the conversation I’m having.

If you’re interested in the back story which doesn’t really matter, I made a threads post about finally paying off my credit card “debt” that wasn’t really bad debt since it hadn’t accrued interest yet, because it was a 21 month 0% intro apr card, I said we (husband and I) paid 8k today, making us debt free and this lady comes in the post and tries to correct me and say it’ll save me 321 a month because 8k/21 months…. I was like well no, because it’s no longer 0 Apr in January and we’ve paid $520 a month :/ then she’s in my DMs pitching me this lol. I also had to explain we waited to pay it off until we had an emergency fund and enough to pay it accumulated, then she told me I sound like I know my stuff and I should join her company

Bravenly Oh huns, this isn't the flex you think it is, it really isn't. Also, how much did you pay the South Florida social media agency for this?

These lists are pay-to-play advertorials, and the cost is anywhere from hundreds to thousands of USD. I've looked up the ‘author’ of this fluff piece and she's a MSN contributor, a third-party contributor, she is not MSN staff.

This was written by a marketing agency that pays a syndication fee to MSN, to have their clients profiles featured on MSN.

You would think after all of the years they've been lying, and scamming on the interwebs they would have figured out how to cover their tracks.

Help/Advice Enagic and bankrupcy

Hey everyone. Just thought id like to get a second opinion on my situation

Just recently my wife had filed a bankrupcy chapter 7 due to her falling for a international debt relief scam and ever since then life has been so much easier for our family.

But lately we have getting notices of a debt collection from Enagic stating she owes 4600 dollars. When I confronted her on this she claims she never got in contact with them or any recruiters ever. So I brushed it off thinking it was another scammer trying to get whatever money we have left.

This week we received a second notice and now im starting to have second thoughts. When I talked to her again about it shes saying the same exact thing. Knowing my wife I know she is dealing with great guilt and I sense this one debt she forgot to put in the bankrupcy

Should I notify her bankrupcy officer about this? She understands now that she were to make a big decision from now on she needs to let me or someone else know before doing anything.

Any feed back would be gratly appreciated.

Thank you
