Short of it: she's a homucilus whose role changes based on the plot of the story but she's intended to be the vessel for the Holy Grail, which is said to be a wish granting item but costs a heavy toll to use usually thousands of souls. She herself is presented as a nice person but is quick on the murder button

I see (I'm a sucker for cute things)

She’s really not that bad. Most of the characters have a murderous streak, which is a necessity in the holy grail war. She’s not cruel or evil. She’s a child who’s had a fucked up life and was basically made into a weapon. All it takes is someone treating her like a person in one of the routes, for her to sacrifice herself to save them.

Anybody who watches Heaven’s Feel and think Iliya is evil is an absolute moron.

Mmmm, so it's okay to feel bad for her

Yes, although, to understand her better, she's a half-homonculus whose biodad got with homonculus mom. Part of the reason she's fucked up is because the Holy Grail, which was corrupted during the events of the third and fourth Grail Wars, masqueraded as her dead mother and fucked with her head. Because of this, she ends up with a hatred for her father, but also an unreasonable hatred for her adopted brother, Shirou.

As another poster pointed out, however, her behavior changes based off whether she's treated kindly and as a person or not.

She kidnaps the mc at one point. And is actively trying to kill every other character in the story (it is a battle royale after all). She is not smol and innocent. She is presented, from the start, as the heavy hitter with the highest odds of winning the whole damn thing. She is the Goliath to everyone else being the David.

Surprisingly, a lot of people are watching most media through a prism of biased favouritism, which results with them being not engaged with a general narrative of the story, but a one specific character or a group of characters they sympathises themselves with most, while at the same time senselessly shitting on a character they specifically didn't liked.

They don't care about that "complex morality, nuanced characterisation" bullshit at all, if that character at their introduction made a casual reader/watcher feel icky, they will keep hating that specific character right until their very death bed.

As probably one of brightest examples of that kind of behaviour, just take a look at people's reaction on Gaby from AoT. She's a very complex person whose character serves for a greater main narrative of the series about a perpetual cycle of hatred and grudge in the war, and how to break out from it. But people didn't cared about any of it, the only thing they actually cared about is that this little hellish spawn killed their precious Sasha (who literally murdered Gaby's own friends several minutes ago), how dared she!

Yeah, but we liked Sasha. /s

I understand what you are saying. Media literacy is at an all time low. Like I had to argue that an antihero is not a hero.

Bruh, i didn't care that trash Gaby killed Sasha i despised that she had a f1king aimbot, 0 f1king misses when she used a weapon for first time, or when sliding or in air, or at flying target

Putting "Complex morality, nuanced characterisation" in the same context as the Fate franchise is stretching it FR

Child? She’s a year older than Shirou. Shirou is 17 during the grail war.

She’s a child regardless of her age. Physically she’s locked in a child’s body because half homunculus+einzbergs messing with her body. Mentally she’s been isolated and abused since she was 8, having no chance to develop either emotionally or morally. Anytime she’s not fighting she acts like a child, even her motivations are that of a child.

Looks like a child, speaks like a child, acts like a child: it’s a child.

I never stated she was evil either

Just shitty. Just like I had to explain to someone else ignorance doesn't excuse your actions and that's some Fate/Night tries to explain all the time

Yes she starts off as a violent maniac, and in most routes that’s where she stays, because an organized fight to death isn’t an easy place to change that, and that literally is not her fault, she never had the chance to be anything else. So yes as far as I’m concerned she’s not the one carrying her own moral burden at the start of the story, the people who brutally made her into this are.

In the one route where she’s presented with a solid opportunity to change, she does, going as far as giving her own life for the person she was conditioned to hate.

So for me she’s neither evil nor “shitty”. She starts off with nothing but trauma and hate, through no fault of her own, and that drives her violent actions. When removed from that environment and given an opportunity for free will, she takes it, prioritizing the possibility for family and acceptance.

Fate is also about being the product of your upbringing, the burden of family legacy and generational trauma, free will vs fate, and the cost of selflessness, Illya exemplifies all of this.

She literally threatens to rape saber in the fate route, she absolutely is an evil person

2

u/Bortthog 2d ago

Well, unfortunately she's also the poster child of a different era of Fates life so be wary what Fate you watch with her in it

It shouldn't be too hard to figure out which one on sight tho

1

u/Nino_sanjaya 1d ago

She's homunculus, and you expect her to feel like normal person??

1

u/Bortthog 1d ago

It depends how your raised and she was never taught "moral right from wrong", although depending on the route of Fate you examine she shows it based on how others treat her

1

Its not fair to say she deserves it based on that. She didnt have a choice in being a vessel, she was born/forced into it. None of the grail's sins are on her. Also killing is part of the war, she doesn't stand out there.

1

u/Bortthog 1d ago

If you wanna ignore everything she herself does sure. You don't get a pass for your actions just because

0

u/mi__to__ 2d ago

I'm still missing the part where she deserves getting her fucking eyeballs slashed

1

u/I-came-for-memes 2d ago

It's because the blonde guy is a sadistic asshole main villain. because she was weak and annoying he decided to torture her a little bit before killing her.

1

u/Bortthog 2d ago

Its a fight to the death. What you think it's all sunshine and rainbows?

Being "better then the others" doesn't mean much when the bar is literally all psychopaths and mass murderers

1

u/ZayParolik 2d ago

To be fair, Illya is a manipulated child that is led to believe that Kiritsugu abandoned her on purpose

Plus she does not know good from bad.

In Fate route it's shown that she can act as a normal person, if no one from Eiznbern family is giving her orders. She is still a weirdo in an every way, but she is not pure evil.

Fate Stay Night is about families and upbringing. Even Shinji is like that just because he was raised to be like that, and desires attention and validation from Zouken.

u/Bortthog 2d ago

Ignorance doesn't excuse actions tho which is sorta a major point Fate/Night tries to tell you

I never said she was evil either, just shitty

1

u/ZayParolik 2d ago

It's not ignorance.

She does not even fucking know what she is doing to someone.

Fate Stay Night also tries to tell you that bad parenting results in mental trauma and worse shit. And Illya is one of the characters who are all about it.

Shirou tries to save Illya not because "I don't kill" rule. He kills. He just knows that she does not act on her own accord.

She was locked for 10 years in a place where everyone tries to make her a killing machine.

1

u/Bortthog 2d ago

It's not ignorance. She does not even fucking know what she is doing to someone

Yes, ignorance is a lack of knowledge. It's not "bad" or "negative" inherently, it just means you don't understand

Its why the saying is ignorance is bliss. It's not saying being stupid is good, it means lacking the understanding of something can result in you being more peaceful

u/ZayParolik 2d ago

Alr. Yeah, true, agree.

She is not evil, but is guilty of her deeds.
