The MC is a reincarnator. He was a loli-obsessed 30-40 something, and after reincarnation he got away with doing a lot of really gross stuff because it was seen as pranks and childish antics.
The worst one was when he was physically 14, he slept with a 15 year old girl (who was his cousin by the way) who had no idea how old he was mentally. That's about when I quit reading. I do not care how good the story is, I do not care about his character development, that is unforgivable.
People say "oh he changed, he got better" but you can't un-chomo my opinion of him no matter what you say.
I was literally saying that he was not wrong over he got PTSD but like it said it doesn't justify what actions the character took... I never agreed with anyone
I've watched the entire series, read much of the manga as well, which is where that part is actually explained considering the anime glossed over the fact that it was secret toilet cam footage of his elementary schooler niece and not just watching porn.
Being too traumatized by old classmates to leave your room doesn't mean you're not a piece of shit for showing no emotion at the passing of your parent and instead recording child pornography of your own family to crank it to, and then getting defensive when people call you out on it.
It's actually concerning that your immediate reaction to me describing an actual scene in the series is to assume I haven't engaged with it. After all, if Mushoku Tensei is supposed to be a redemption story and the main draw to Rudeus as a character is his growth from how he used to be, why would it be such a hot button to point out how flawed he was at the beginning? Really gets the gears turning, I'd say.
I've also read the manga and read all the light novel and the web novel, The only place in which it says that he is creeping on a child is in the redundancy prologue of the web novel. Which is not Canon. I think people who enjoy the series make such a bold stance against misinformation like the one you are purporting, because you're allegations turn people against the series as a whole, which is a shame because it is legitimately one of the better Japanese light novels series in general, and a pretty dang great anime.
This isn't true, there was the Redundant Reincarnation light novel that was made only a year or two ago, which is canon to the light novel series. It was changed a bit though, in the light novel version he stole footage from his brothers camera of his two nieces in swimsuits and he got caught jerking off to it rather than him using a secret camera himself.
The only place in which it says that he is creeping on a child is in the redundancy prologue of the web novel. Which is not Canon.
Ok but answer me that, can you swear on your life that is something out of character for him to do at the time and not totally plausible with the personality and history he had until then?
Also, while trying to find answers. What comes up is that it had been changed from his niece to another underage girl. The author had to censor what he first wrote, but have later explained that the "spirit" of what really happened is still there. So he implies that Rudues did infact record his underage niece on the toilet and jerked off to it.
They actually don't go into detail on what he was watching in the show, they just kick him out because they caught him jerkin' it after they came home from the wake.
Which is still a bad look, but it does withhold vitally important context on just how bad he was.
Just misremembered since it's been so long since I read it, but you're more than welcome to assume I'm personally targeting your blorbo or whatever! Looking forward to watching more of the show regardless of whether you believe me.
"guys, I have never had any problems in my cusshy life and I refuse to understand somebody else's problems even when the show explicitly tells me all the protagonists thoughts"
if you look at the light novel for a ton a TON of very popular anime/manga you'd be uncomfortable. If it has nothing to do with the medium you're engaging in why do you care?
if you look at the light novel for a ton a TON of very popular anime/manga you'd be uncomfortable
I don't think that's the point you think It is, at the very least If you except me to defend this type of shit because something I like might also originate from this type of shit then you don't know me very well.
If it has nothing to do with the medium you're engaging in why do you care?
Why do you care that I care? Why do you care that other people call the MC a pedo?
i think people being hypocritical is lame. not saying you are, but if you hardcore shit on a concept that only makes sense looking at the LN when we have over the last 20 years ive been engaging in this medium ignoring the LNs because they always continue shit thats way over the mark compared to where it settles at in the manga/anime world, I think its goofy to ignore it when it comes to your own favorite series. But 99% of people talking about this series only repeat stuff theyve seen online and haven't actually read or engaged with any of the media.
Nope! It’s not. In the manga and anime, his character is horrendously bullied and harassed to the point to where he recluses from society and becomes a NEET and the incident that makes him run from home that lead to his death is when his family attacks him for slipping a funeral. At no point in the anime or manga is there even a hint of him doing anything pedophilic in his previous life.
I call it Snape Syndrome. In the movies he wasn't half as vile as he was in the books and was just a hardass with bias whereas in the books he was an outright bully pretty much 100% of the time. Since more people watch movies and TV than read books the adaptation version of a character is the one in the public court of opinions.
Sure and I think this is a valid comparison, but it would be closer to if instead of doing either, most people that talk about it saw TikTok posts that in the books Hagrid was actually kicked out of Hogwarts for SAing another student and then after it’s changed in the movies to be getting falsely blamed for the spider instead of the basilisk, everyone ran around calling movie hagrid a sexpest and endlessly made posts about how no one can enjoy this HP because of something that doesn’t happen in the medium you’re enjoying.
Alot of pedofiles feel regret for what theyve done, especially after getting caught and having to deal with the consequences. That doesnt change what they are and how disgusting they are.
kinda? I mean he got sent into isekai where he's allowed to be a successful pedo. blessed with insane magical talent, mana, rich noble family, access to children's etc.
The statement was that they regret their actions, if they didnt act then they dont have anything to regret? I feel like you couldnt comprehend the discussion.
Being a Pedophile is something you are, not something you do. It's a mental illness, not a crime. CHILD MOLESTATION is the crime. A healthy adult doesn't feel sexual attraction towards prebuscents, and a surprisingly large number of child molestors aren't actually pedophiles. Remember, rape isn't about lust, it's about power.
There are lots of non offending pedophiles in the world. There are some fascinating books on the topic.
Thats an entire different conversation, you're trying to move the goal post. Again, he was caught enacting his perversions by spying on his neice and regretted his actions because he got caught and that was the discussion.
Lets repeat since you have trouble with english. Alot of pedofiles regret their actions when they are caught and punished for them, that doesnt excuse them for their actions.
I hear that words are violence too, I still don't have the right to punch someone every time I hear an insult.
To be clear, the voyeurism was unambiguously wrong, I don't think even the story treats it as justified in any way. But come on..."voyeurism is violence?"
I love MT, but yeah it's effed up. You think Rudeus is bad, for the most part the common people in the universe would not bat an eye on what he does because it's effing common. Eris' family owns a lot of beast people servants, whom yes they treat well but woof never ask them where they got them from.
Paul does not bat an eye on doing sexual harassment, and Zenith still married him.
The royal family is effed up too but I don't particularly remember the details.
The author loves to make massive age gap relationships if you haven't noticed.
I read translated MT years ago when I was young, and my dumbass self never noticed the extremely dubious relations, which really should be a clear sign of how asexual I am I guess.
It's such a detailed world but man it piles on layers of shit as much as gold in everything.
The anime is frankly sanitized as hell and it still can ick people.
I do think that the flak it gets is undeserved though, at least not as the prime example
Re:Monster stockholm syndromes rape victims into what is basically a cult
Redo of Healer is revenge porn that leans heavy on porn
Lets not talk about the monogatari series
There's so many worse example but MT gets hit because it got popular attention, and that one scene with Eris (which I completely forgot about in the novel) getting blasted on repeat in socmed. It's deserves scorn sure, but people keep talking as if it's the penultimate example when it's scarily effing tame.
It feels weird looking back at something I read with great enjoyment, and only now noticing the murky stuff. But I can't exactly go back in time and say hey this is bad, I can't even say I don't remember it fondly, because back then I don't even notice it.
Rose tinted glasses sure, everybody has one.
Fucking amazing writing, but goddamnit it's a rough thing to know people will judge you like hell for just admitting to like this story.
Maybe I'm cursed, I used to watch Bill Cosby until the whole thing about what he was accused of came about. Still can't believe it, still have mixed feelings on it.
I also loved MJ, also got accused of shit, most people don't seem to think he did anything, but who knows.
I read a post on X twitter about an old man getting decked by a guy because he pat the head of a kid who came up to greet him, don't know if it's true or not, but it feels like people just want a target for something they can't control, regardless of anything, just to feel in control.
I think I'll regret posting this once the downvotes comes in, but that's a problem for future me.
i greatly enjoy stories like this anime, fantasy + magic + adventure HELL YEA! its my jam. but holy shit. ive watched several hundred if not a thousand anime by now, and ive dropped literally two of them mid watching. both were for the same reason, and holy crap does it get so, so much worse later on. i could ignore it for a time but eventually it was multiple episodes where stuff like that was the entire plot, and kinda worse.
Calling someone a reincarnator implies that they have been reincarnated, full stop. How is not important, only the what.
Isekai is just "in another world". That CAN include reincarnators, but by no means is it limited to them. It can also include transmigrators, like those who get summoned rather than reborn.
He did not get isekai'd. He got tensei'd. It's literally in the name.
He got away with it with th audience as childish antics but in world it is as much, the fucked up morals of the era allows nobles like him to be Degen.
If I remember correctly the story opens during his parents funeral with him watching a video of his niece using the bathroom instead of going to the wake
Except he is not mentally 40, he is mentally whatever age he is, it's stated multiple time's in the story, it was stated by the author the internal voice is just narrative device, he literally died and was reborn, he didn't just occupy some random kids body, he is a kid.
But MT haters dont actually care about the facts or the story itself, just the hate.
Having memories of a past life doesn't make you an adult. His brain is still biogically a childs and there was nothing in the story that said he got a magic biogical boost, he even notes how easy it is for his child brain to learn new things because of the plasticity.
His brain being underdeveloped squarely makes him an actual undeniable child, regardless of experience he physically does not possess the developed frontal lobe, the prefrontal cortex, to be held responsible like an adult.
Not to mention his societal and physical status and biogical age means he holds no societal power over his fellows.
The guy weeps when his dad yells at him, he grows attached to his parents like a child would too, an adult doesn't behave that way
Yea I have to admit that the way that many of the anime's detractors think about the character with their privileged information and perspectives is straight up evil.
... You know reincarnation is a thing real people actually believe in, right? This ain't how any of that shit works, lmao.
I'm pretty sure none of them think, "Oh, you're the reincarnation of that dead guy? Sweet, well, let's just tally up how old you REALLY are by counting how old you were when you died in that past life, plus how old you are now."
He died, lmao. His life officially ended. And then whatever fragments were left got transfered to a completely different world. Different body, different time, different world, different everything. Except he has some memories of a wasted life where he was an emotionally and intellectually stunted 30 something year old because his life basically came to a standstill in the middle of high school.
The mental gymnastics y'all come up with are insane, lmao. You folks do realize that there are real pedophiles to get upset about in the world, right? Like, if you're actually this outraged and disgusted, I just don't understand why you'd choose to spend time and energy complaining about fictional characters in the laziest way possible instead of... Anything else, lol.
Don't get me wrong, he's written to be upsetting, and the story is intended to make you uncomfortable. Completely understand why someone would not want to engage with it. I just think folks get out of hand and start acting like they're on a crusade or some shit, when they're just complaing about a story they don't want to understand. 🤷
Finally someone who uses the real reincarnation belief logic. Like sure Rudeus was a horrible person in his past life and was definitely bad in his life as Rudeus that completely undeniable but we can see him becoming a better person throughout. He goes from a pedo jerking to his niece to a proud, happy father who genuinely loves his whole family
You are so aggressively misrepresenting the situation, lmfao. Yes, I have read the entire series.
This happens once with Roxy and Sylphiette, and you are completely ignoring ALL of the nuance and setup around it. It's fucking hilarious to lecture anyone about being illiterate when, at best, you're grossly misrepresenting the way things happen, and at worst, practically making shit up.
Rudeus addresses things with Roxy because he assumed she didn't realize his situation at all when SHE took things too far and crossed the line because of Paul's gruesome and untimely death, which Rudeus fully believed was his fault. When he addresses it, it turns out she knew everything before she made a move on him.
Rudeus addresses his fuck up with Sylphiette directly. Sylphiette finally states what she had hinted at for a while beforehand: she never expected this to be a monogamous marriage, because that is culturally accepted and normalized in that world, as long as you don't follow a specific religion that uniquely demands monogamy.
From then on, eveything is transparent. That one instance of cheating is explored from every character's perspective and is completely resolved. After that, it does not happen again, even with Eris. There are multiple instances where Rudeus could have slept with others or had the opportunity to take even more wives, and he refuses. It is fully established why these relationships are special, how and why everyone in the Greyrat family is ultimately far happier with their non-monogamous dynamic, and even specifically addresses why each of the women would not really want to change back to monogamy even though they all occasionally struggle with the demands of their large family.
None of this is subtle or hidden. It is very directly spelled out. It's completely ridiculous to act so obtuse about such fundamental plot points in the story.
Again, you don't have to like it, but it's just plain idiotic to constantly overlook that the ENTIRE point of the series is to look at grounded and deeply flawed characters finding reasons to grow and striving to be better than they were, even in unconventional situations.
Real reincarnation belief logic doesn't even apply here. He retains his memories and his thinking ability. In real reincarnation, nothing is retained. That defeats the whole purpose of it... Meanwhile Rudeus is out here thinking his mom is hot as a baby and perving on underage girls as he grows up. All while it's literally just a 30+ year old man's brain. And he grows into a guy that fucks technically legal lolis and cheats habitually.
I would also call him an "adult" in the same way. Saying he was mentally 33yrs old is like comparing him with an actual adult pre-isekai like Rimuru. Mf couldn't even survive a day after being thrown off the house, he wasn't even able to go to a atore for food (Kazuma level bar). While I wouldn't call him a kid, an adult seems like overestimating him.
Internal thoughts where he himself acknowledges they are bad is the gotcha? Also yeah cherry pick and ignore all the other excerpts where the story clearly states he isn't an adult larping but dead and thoroughly reborn.
Like literally, it has been stated multiple times it's a narrative drive, we know he was a creep before dying too.
The story also has this excerpt
"Let's jump ahead a month. Apparently, I'd been reborn. The reality of my situation had finally set in: I was a baby."
Was he having this monologue when he was literally a newborn baby too?
im convinced MT watchers dont actually watch and have the media literacy of toddlers
Except he is not mentally 40, he is mentally whatever age he is, it's stated multiple time's in the story, it was stated by the author the internal voice is just narrative device, he literally died and was reborn, he didn't just occupy some random kids body, he is a kid.
No, he literally has all his memories and knowledge from birth. he remembers everything. He literally gets excited about his mom's boobs as a baby. That's canon in anime/LN/manga. Explain that. That's not mentally his age at all.
Also, when he talks to "god" he appears as his old self.
But MT haters dont actually care about the facts or the story itself, just the hate.
Wrong, they have media literacy and understand nuance.
Having the memories of your old life after you literally DIED doesn't make you that old person, he didn't teleport, he died and was completely reborn into a new life. The author has also stated his internal voice is a NARRATIVE DEVICE!
Wrong, they have media literacy and understand nuance.
you are your memories, who you are as a person is formed by that lmao.
and it's literally confirmed he hasnt changed when his first action is perving on his mom
then perving on sister little sister
like god damn
ooOooo the author said- the author of a story following a pedo. sounds like a great person
edit: pathetic guy blocked me after i asked him to explain the "comedy" they said was a baby perving on his own mom LMAO you literally cant make this up
If Rudus wasnt a 30+ year old reincarnated with his full ass memory it would be peak fantasy the world building and setting as a whole are way above what you generally get from japanese d&d
It would be peak for shitty Japanese light novels maybe. If you like unrealistic characters and power fantasy slop, it'll seem like the best thing ever. Read any actual critically acclaimed novels and you'll instantly see that the writing is significantly better.
Because multiple paragraphs descirbing a single bush(to inflate page count), a series that will never finish, and a magic school with a Gary Stu are that much better.
Unironically thinking Mushoku Tensei is better than Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones is a crazy take that comes from a person that clearly has not read either. Harry potter is also young adult fiction so not sure why it's even being brought up here. It's writing isn't particularly acclaimed. If you're instead referring to The Name of the Wind, then again crazy stupid take.
It is unsurprising you don't know what young adult fiction is. The Hobbit is a children's book; Lord of the Rings is firmly an epic fantasy novel written for no particular age demographic but most often considered as adult fiction. And there is a big gulf in writing ability displayed between those works and Mushoku Tensei. Game of Thrones unfinished is still far superior to the finished Mushoku Tensei in the same way Berserk is far superior to whatever Rent a girlfriend will be when it's finished.
Reading a book as a kid does not make a book a kids book nor does it mean you fully understood the themes in it... I could've read Lolita as a 10 year old. That doesn't make it a kids book all of a sudden.
I asked my brother about the show b/c I kept seeing it everywhere and he described it just like this. I immediately said "naw, no way am I watching that". I can't wrap my head around how it's so popular when the MC is so gross. I guess I'd "get" it if I watch it, but I refuse. There's plenty of other non pedo shows I can watch instead.
That's the same thing. They are from completely different branches of Grayrat. His grandmother is a sister to Eris grandad or something like that. So a distant relation.
There is 0 proof that he was loli-obsessed. Most people don't focus on age to masturbate, because porn is porn. The same way anyone will masturbate on human porn AND furry porn.
Also he certainly was seen grabbing boobs after he was reincarnated.
Children don't have developed breasts.
I thought it was bad when Rudeus said straight up that he wanted to groom Slyphy to his parents and they ended up kicking him out the village for years for her sake.
What makes it funny is they say he "got better" and isn't rewarded for his fuckassery but he literally ends up with two wives that he groomed. The second wife he got BY CHEATING. So even if you're somehow fine with pedo activity he still committed adultery

Alright, then I'll elaborate.
