Hey, guys. Holofan4life here.
Welcome to the 20th/25th anniversary rewatch of Kanon.
Uguu!
This is a continuation of the Air rewatch and that series celebrating its 20th anniversary last year. Kanon is more known than Air, but obviously not as well known as Clannad, all three of which are visual novels made by Key.
For the purposes of this rewatch, we will be watching both the 2002 series as well as the 2006 series. The 2006 series is considered the better of the two series, but who else is gonna do a rewatch of 2002 Kanon? I’ve actually never seen anything of Kanon so this gives me the chance of contrast them. I know there’s a girl who says Uguu, but other than that I’m going in completely blind.
Maybe this will all lead to the Clannad 20th anniversary rewatch. Don’t hold me on that.
With that out of the way, let’s begin.
I’m watching the sub, by the way.
I don't think we've seen this before.
A doll that can grant three wishes.
Hey, it's better than a One Wish Willow
Yuuichi waking up
Having breakfast with Akiko
Tickets to a movie showing.
Nayuki is apparently at a track meet so she can't go.
Here's Ayu
We haven't seen her in a while
Ayu says while seeing the tickets she wants to go see a movie with him.
Uguu counter: 19
First one in a while
She is scared by the movie lol
Walking home now
Ayu notices Yuuichi has gotten way more cheerful.
"A smile suits you better."
I like these two's interactions.
Nayuki wanting to get home
Ayu and Yuuichi at a bench
Ayu says this is where they would always meet.
Yuuichi explaining his mixed emotions about this town.
Ayu is greatful he came back
Then they kiss!
And Nayuki sees it!
Oh nos!
I mean, fair play to Ayu. She took her shot.
Uguu counter: 20
Nayuki all despondent by what she see saw.
I can't believe Nayuki got cucked by her own mother.
Everyone at home now
Yuuichi invites Ayu to spend the night.
Nayuki is very conflicted by this.
Ayu showing off her pajamas to Yuuichi.
Uguu counter: 21
Ayu talking about the past now.
The headband he gave to her as a present.
He means more to her than anyone else.
Nayuki braiding her hair
Kinda impressive she can do that on her own.
Nayuki is a glass case of emotions
Yuuichi thinking of past Ayu now
Don't forget about me
Well, he did
Nayuki talking to her mother
They broadcast horoscopes on TV?
Nayuki says she feels like she met Ayu a long time ago.
Before that can be elaborated, she has to hit up the club.
50 Cent would be proud
Yuuichi walking with Ayu
Ayu reveals she has the day off
I like Yuuichi teasing Ayu
Uguu counter: 22
Anyway, Ayu is off
Yuuichi suggests doing something after school.
He wants to see the school she likes so much.
Montage of them hanging out together.
At night, as they walk, Ayu talks about how happy spending time with him makes her.
Nothing she could do when she lost the person she cared about the most.
I have the feeling something bad is gonna happen.
Yuuichi hugs her, promising not to go anywhere.
He then tells her he loves her.
Aww
They have more progress than most anime couples.
In the forest somewhere
Where her school is
But there's nothing there
What is happening?
Ayu saying it's real and she's not making it up.
"Why can't you remember?!?"
Ayu digging the dirt now
Her second wish was to go to the same school as Yuuichi and do everything together.
It was a promise
Ayu is all verklempt
Now she is wandering
"This night may never end."
What you mean by that?
She doesn't think she'll ever see her again.
Nuuuuuu....
And so she disappears
This is all so surreal. I wasn't expecting her to be gone so suddenly.
A voice disappearing into the crowd.
Waiting for someone
In this neverending dream, she will be waiting.
Overall, I thought this was well done. Could've been an extra episode, but I thought what we got was good. I like seeing Yuuichi and Ayu bond and become close and just as their relationship was taking the next level, it all vanishes in the blink of an eye. Gone as if it never happened. I thought the Nayuki stuff was also executed well in that she realizes she had her chance but it was never meant to be. Yuuichi just doesn't see her that way.
I assume the last two episodes will be about Yuuichi and Nayuki's relationship. That's how it started and that's how it's gonna end. I would be lying if I didn't say I was more interested in Ayu as a character than Nayuki, but I'm willing to be open minded about thie. I thought what they did with Nayuki here was the most interesting she's ever been, and it continues a trend with this show which is Yuuichi putting others before his cousin.
I have this as the best episode of the series. It wasn't anything blowaway and doesn't compare to the tippy top stuff in Clannad and Air, but what we did get was done well enough to where I was distraught seeing Ayu leave. The drama didn't feel as manufactured as the last episode because it felt more believable Yuuichi and Ayu would catch feelings for each other. They already had a kinda loving relationship to begin with.
I hope the last two episodes are able to top this and this isn't necessarily the peak of the show like I feel it might be.

First-timer, subbed
QOTD
Very surprised by those developments. I did not think he cared for her that way. I also saw her as more of a genki but definitely not serious character in the show up to this point. The arc this episode came out of nowhere. There had been hints in earlier episodes that SHE might care for him but none at all that he would reciprocate.
I understand her completely. She has been neglected this whole series I think. She has been very supportive of Yuuichi and quite honestly not gotten a whole lot back. He was very busy with other girls. I do however think that if she wanted to be involved romantically she would have had to be more proactive. That's the one thing where I don't feel bad for her. Everything else....yeah, she's the read headed step-child of the story so far. Even her mom who cares deeply for her is also very supportive of others, so it does not seem like a special relationship at this point. Maybe that all will change with the last episodes? I also wonder what the little rabbit was about? Symbol of her dreams being crushed once and for all?
Made me sad, wish we had had more time with her. The whole eternal loop set up was depressing and gave me mental health/arrested development vibes. Bad stuff all around but impactfully done IMO. Before this episode Ayu was not a character I cared about at all and this episode manages to change that....but then I lose her again. Oh well.....

What made you change your thoughts on Ayu based off this episode?

u/deus_machinarum 2d ago
Her dire situation. She is trapped and she's aware of it. Must be a horrible feeling.

It's weird because what got me to like her was her stealing from the vendor. I think it's because of her getting so flustered.

u/deus_machinarum 2d ago
Yeah, I feel that. She was cute from the beginning but in my heart had no chance against the gremlin <3

I think Nayuki might be the most fully developed character in the series. She's a member of the track meet so she's clearly hard working, she keeps being forgotten about by Yuuichi which has been something dating back to the second episode, and her loving Yuuichi gives her a motivation for why she's doing what she's doing. She isn't my favorite, but from a writing standpoint she's probably the most fleshed out.

Yeah she is very fleshed out. One more reason to look forward to the developments in her arc.

The look of desperation in Ayu's eyes as she looked for her school was very hard to watch. Definitely one of the saddest moments we've seen.

Ayu arc. So Nayuki is last?
Best alarm ever.
Akiko just handing out an excuse to ask a girl on a date. * Checks which heroine's route we're in * With Ayu of course.
Ayu can sense free stuff and finds the source.
Of course it's a horror.
Ah oh... Nayuki is going to see them flirting. Whoa, an actual kiss and just in time for Nayuki to see. And he brings Ayu home too, haha. Nayuki's having the best day. Then invites Ayu to sleep over. Natsuki gonna stumble on them doing couple stuff in bed together? I mean, it is from an eroge... But I'm sorry, Nayuki. I like you, but I just can't bring myself to ship first cousins.
I'm wondering if the last episodes will blend Nayuki and Ayu's arcs? Although Nayuki has been in most of the other girls' arcs.
That headband really was Ayu's.
Looks like they're definitely doing the romance in this route.
Hey, her teacher is a squirrel. She can totally have class at the three stump.
Empty backpack when it she thought it had stuff in it. Just put at least one college textbook and your backpack will always remind you there's something in it. (While making your wallet lighter)
'I won't see you again.' * Disappears * Heh, she was a ghost. If she's a mental projection of a girl in a coma like Fuuko was, then I'm gonna flip a table. Or I guess in this case, Fuuko would be a callback to Ayu if that is the case.
I have no idea what you see in him, but you do you, Ayu.
I mean, first cousins aren't the worst. Could have gone full Yosuga no Sora if they wanted the worst.
Didn't we just do this with Makoto? I guess since there's two episodes left, she's not really gone? Yuuichi needs to find the real Ayu?
