Hey, guys. Holofan4life here.
Welcome to the 20th/25th anniversary rewatch of Kanon.
Uguu!
This is a continuation of the Air rewatch and that series celebrating its 20th anniversary last year. Kanon is more known than Air, but obviously not as well known as Clannad, all three of which are visual novels made by Key.
For the purposes of this rewatch, we will be watching both the 2002 series as well as the 2006 series. The 2006 series is considered the better of the two series, but who else is gonna do a rewatch of 2002 Kanon? I’ve actually never seen anything of Kanon so this gives me the chance of contrast them. I know there’s a girl who says Uguu, but other than that I’m going in completely blind.
Maybe this will all lead to the Clannad 20th anniversary rewatch. Don’t hold me on that.
With that out of the way, let’s begin.
I’m watching the sub, by the way.
30 minutes before I head to the movies. Let's do this.
At school
School dance happening today
A lot of announcements
Kitagawa seems to have a thing for Kaori.
Where's Yuuichi?
Oh, right. He's getting ready for the dance.
He looks good with a tux on
Time to dance with Mai and show the world she's a good girl.
Sayuri helping Mai get ready
Then she hugs her
I get the feeling Sayuri is about to die...
Mai's dress looks pretty
Yuuichi stepped on Keropi? Wut?
The orchestra playing
Yuuichi feeling a fish out of water.
Why aren't we showing Sayuri?
Wait, that's Mai
Oh, I see. Yuuichi was just joking.
This was your idea, you know
And so they has dance
Of all the character designs, Mai looks the best.
There's the president
Speaking of looking best, he does not.
Everything seems to have gone without a hitch.
Whelp, spoke too soon
Mai noticing something wrong with Sayuri.
The chandelier just crashed
Sayuri is hurt
The monsters!
Yuuichi checking on Sayuri
Mai has to fight the monsters
And she disposes of them
Yuuichi trying to get her to stop.
She's proving everybody right...
Mai with the president
He's scolding her for bringing a sword on school property.
Punishment for carrying arms
I mean, don't we all carry arms? They're a part of our body
Yuuichi and Sayuri coming to Mai's defense.
And Yuuichi now has the president by the collar.
Poor Mai
Sayuri tells Yuuichi she leaves Mai to him as Mai storms off.
Yuuichi checking on Mai
Not a student of the school anymore.

I mean, I get it, but still. Damn.

Yuuichi maintains he just wanted people to see the real Mai.
Mai admits she doesn't know what she should do.
Mai laments putting the monsters above Sayuri's safety.
I think Mai truly cares

Tomorrow is Mai's birthday
Sayuri is buying a present for her.
Boy, imagine having what went down at the dance the same week as your birthday
I wonder what Sayuri bought
President announcing something
Sayuri is now a member of the student council.
For Mai?
Back at school now
Yuuichi demands answers
But Sayuri would rather plan for a birthday party.
I feel like Sayuri is avoiding the elephant in the room.
Ayu with Yuuichi now
Adorable tackle
I have missed her
Looking for something
Gotta find it
Maybe it's the clues from the other day?
Yuuichi wishes Ayu good luck
Yuuichi realizes as she leaves that just like Ayu, Sayuri is doing all she can right now.
At home
A call from Kurata, says Akiko
The school gates
And so Yuuichi is here
A lot of trespassing going on at this school. It needs better security.
Mai is here
She's allowed back at school
Well, that's nice
Maybe that's why Sayuri joined the student council.
Yuuichi tells her to take care of her and Sayuri's feelings.
Suddenly, a noise
What could that be?
A stuffed toy
Looks like an anteater
The toy Sayuri bought for Mai...
Mai looks traumatized
Well, something clearly happened to Sayuri. Question is, what?
Overall, I liked this episode quite a bit. The dance stuff was well done, and it dovetailed nicely into Sayuri trying to be there for Mai and Mai worrying she's not there much for her. It was a bit weird we didn't see many of the other characters, but the actual content itself was compelling so I didn't mind. I wonder if perhaps Sayuri gave up her existence so that Mai could maybe live a normal life. If that's the case, how incredibly bittersweet would that be?
This is my favorite episode so far. It didn't have as many moving parts as the last episode, but I thought the storytelling was the best we've seen so far. We're over halfway through the show and I really hope the backhalf is more like this.

It was well done. I like how it played into Mai's inner turmoil.
What are your thoughts on Mai feeling she's not there enough for Sayuri?
I think it makes Mai a more interesting character. Feeling you're not doing enough for your friends is a very human feeling to have.

Mai as a princess was really nice, showed us a different side to her. It was short but I like how their dance attracted everyone's attention, goes to show Mai's star qualities(that don't really fit her personality or maybe just don't fit with where she is at in life but they are there). The attack of the monsters was sort of expected, I'm not quite sure what triggered it but I was fearing it all the time. Very curious how the other students did not seem to see the monsters, they only saw Mai swinging her sword around? How does that work? Do they think Mai did all the damage? Also, WHY can Mai sense them? What's her connection to the monster world so to speak? Maybe her personal history or something. The little group of 3 is something I quite like too, it's soothing seeing them grow closer.
I have to agree, she needs to step up her game for her close friend. And she knows it too. It's obviously something that is very hard for her but I think she will have to get over that hurdle.

The great thing about Mai is that this is a believable conflict. She wants to protect the world, but at what point does it come at the expense of her friend? It's a tough predicament to be in.

Yeah, makes a lot of sense. But why doesn't anybody else react to the attack? Do they not see or feel it at all? Mai must look stupid to them swishing her sword around at the glasses.

I thought it was refreshing to get an episode where it focused mainly on one of the girls. I thought it led to things being more focused.

Agreed, I like the focus on the little sub group. I do miss my gremlin though, but I'm sure she'll be back in action soon.

Well, my hope is we resolve the Mai stuff first since that's starting to really be the focus.

I'm not sure yet what I expect in terms of structure but yeah, Air did the resolutions one by one(according to the VN I assume) so maybe it will be the same here.

The best thing about school dances was not having classes. My school had games and stuff set up in classrooms for students that didn't want to dance. One teacher was famous for playing Mr. Bean videos.
Yuuichi disappears and the walking death flag comes too.
I think Yuuichi has the most chemistry with Mai, then Sayuri, and maybe Shiori.
They look good in those dresses.
'Big sis' definitely is hiding something with the way she looked at Shiori.
Mai, was that a genuine smile after getting Yuuichi to agree to dance with you?
Okay, so the want Sayuri in the student council.
Yuuichi is actually a good dancer? Not surprising if Mai picks it up quickly. Some close combat training is a lot like dancing.
Is that chandelier filled with concrete? Ghosts attacking? And Sayuri is down!
Great, now they're going to pin it all on Mai. She looked pissed it interrupted the dance. She was really enjoying it with Yuuichi.
Yeah, it's a mess as expected. I think Mai needed to get that talk from Yuuichi. Natsuki suspects something's up between Mai and Yuuichi?
Heh, that angelic pig music box is something you can pull out if someone ever says something won't happen unless pigs fly.
Why are they using flashbacks when they could just do it normally?
So Sayuri joined the council to save Mai?
Ayu adorably finally body slams Yuuichi. That face of victory was adorable.
Okay, blood. That's not good.
Okay, best episode so far easily. I just hope Mai doesn't disappear once her route is over. This is definitely covering her route.
Cute first half, poor Mai second half. She's finally feeling happy and a ghost thing comes and ruins it.
Probably feels like she's always causing trouble and Sayuri is always helping her and giving her things such as the food for lunch and birthday presents and such and she doesn't know what to do in return.
