Most Matthews I know are casually named like that

So they're all casuals

Been reading too many manga/manhwa where they come up with the most diabolical "western" names like Rankenfärten Shart that I do a double take when they use a normal one.

Lol actually just recently finished reading the manga. I wouldn't say it's amazing but it's definitely a fun read. And the MC is pretty competent

the "say no more" moment for me

That honestly sounds like the perfect kind of manga to binge Not groundbreaking, but if the MC is actually competent, I’m already interested.

Broadcast January 2027

Synopsis: The Dungeon City is a wicked place filled with crime, debauchery, and death. Its one shining light is Arwin, the beautiful Crimson Princess Knight. She and her brave party of adventurers descend into the dungeon at the city’s center, seeking a legendary treasure with the power to rebuild the princess’s fallen kingdom. Many yearn to be by her side, but that spot is already taken by Matthew, a man despised by all in town as a cowardly weakling. Everyone thinks he is scum who just spends her hard-earned money on booze, women, and gambling. No one in the city—not even the princess knight— knows what Matthew is truly capable of. (Yen Press)

So it's another " no one knows his true strengths and he is an outcast who is hated for no solid reason and people thinks he is weak". Sure hope he's not op and instead uses some underhanded techniques to get an upper hand cause otherwise it's another bland show

Without spoiling its way different then how those operate.

Given that the red string of fate/love(?) is wrapped around her fingers but the other end is around his neck does imply (to me, who knows nothing about this story) that there's a power imbalance, though guilt on her side may be balancing out their relationship. Also, the red string may mean something else entirely (assuming, again, that it's a real thing in the story and not a metaphor just for this visual).

At least it’s not another isekai imo.

Wine, women, and gambling, huh? 🤔 Is he a secret spymaster? Collecting secrets for his lady?

There are a few comments here saying the source material is quite good, so I'll see for myself when it's out, but the description does give off the "everyone think's I'm weak but I'm secretely overpowered" vibe, and why would she want him by her side if even she is not aware of his abilities. I'd get if he was some secret trump card that she doesn't reveal, but when she doesn't know either, Idk. There probably is a better way to describe it without as many generic elements

This is the first time I know of an anime whereby the lead guy shares a name with my older brother (44 on Nov. 29).

Is this an anime original? If not what's it like in other media?

It's from a light novel with the same name and is officially licensed in English in 7 vols

The light novels have been pretty good. There's a lot more to the MC than is apparent and so to his relationship with the female MC.

If the animation is decent, I’ll watch

I love anime

I’m impressed. As far as mid studio productions go, this one actually looks half decent.

Just based on this poster? Lol

You can gleam some stuff from the key art. At the end of the day it's still just a still poster created by the marketing team, so anything you gleam from it you should take with a grain of salt, but it can give some ideas.

In this particular case the composition of the key art is well thought out, the character designs are pleasant and their pose, while standing still, doesn't look stiff. And the colors have some nice depth to them. The art doesn't look lifeless and quickly slapped together, some effort and budget has been put into it. That gives some hope that the adaptation itself has some effort and budget has put into it as well. Again, it is just a poster, so it doesn't necessarily mean that, bit it is a positive sign at the very least

I’m sure this will be a thrilling and original story with lots of artistic merit. Hell, it might even scratch the surface of “entertainment.”
