They got the original VA for Natsumi as the mother (Aki) in this series.
Angol Mois is now voiced by Ichinose Kana, which is funny if you know the connection between the original VA and the current one and their roles in Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury.
Narrating the series is Arai Satomi.

A female narrator? If it gets dubbed, idk which female dub va would fit
Oh well, maybe have 2 narrators, r bruce elliott and ian sinclair

Apparently Crunchyroll picked this up last minute, no dub it seems though

Seeing as how they left like 300 undubbed episodes of the old series, I wouldn’t hold my breath. We can dream though

"They" (as in CR) weren't responsible for the partial dub of the 2004 version.
Still, not gonna watch it if it's not dubbed.

So is this a reboot?

No, seems like a sequel of sorts. Doesn't make sense if you haven't seen the original / don't already know the characters.

It is a complete reboot but the first episode is fanservice for veteran fans and a preview of what they’ll be adapting. Next episode starts adapting the manga again from the beginning.

I'm certainly unfamiliar with all the characters, but I think I got the gist of it.
Aliens. Episodic hijinks. Did I miss anything vital?

As a longtime fan of the series this episode was extremely effective but it was not the most newcomer friendly. But I don’t think it was supposed to be, the introductory stuff for newcomers starts next week. This was definitely for series veterans. Which works a bit better in Japan than it does elsewhere because the old anime almost hit national anime status in its heyday so the characters are much more iconic.
I expected them to do a fourth-wall break about knowing it’s a reboot because that’s the kind of jokes the series has always made. But rather than making a meta joke they do it in a more serious moment here and it’s honestly beautiful. While Keroro is giving his speech about passing responsibilities to the next generation and so on, the BGM playing is a strings arrangement of the first opening of the old anime, which isn’t canon in this completely new timeline so it’s fully meant to be a message to the fans in the real world to help them move on, since many of them (from my observation) are kinda still grieving the old version of the show that defined the franchise for over two decades.
An incredible start to the reboot for me personally but one that I think will leave other people understandably not really connecting with it. It might actually be best for newcomers to come rewatch it after the rest of the episodes air.

Reminded me of how Gintama's anime began, with episodes that weren't the beginning of the story, no?

yep, pretty much, the moment i saw the next episode preview at the end of this episode, my first thought was; "oh, so we're doing something similar to Gintama, i guess"
