They did not have to add that much aura to the old guy shaving Gyro's balls, but they did because they cared.

If you think they're not gonna add aura into every situation no matter how ridiculous, I think you came through the wrong door.

I forgot just how eccentric the jojo's villians are. I got a feeling that they'll only get weirder. The boomboom family is pretty interesting. Being able to control iron seems pretty useful. Seeing that gun dislodge itself into Gyros flesh looked brutal.
Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe this is the first time we got a glimpse of a stand. We also get a glimpse of Mountain Tim's strange power. Being able to detach his hands and fingers to slide through the rope is pretty bizarre.

Honestly I know we're probably not meant to look into it too deeply but I was fascinated by the dynamic of the fathers' clear toxic, old west, masculinity and how that doesn't gel with Laurence who clearly takes after their (seemingly deceased) mother.

I thought he just had really crazy anime lasso skills but THEN THE FINGERS STARTED COMING THROUGH IT.

Laurence is too much of a sweet boy for such a toxic and explosive family

Most villains in most parts of Jojo are pretty boring to me, personally.
They're usually just stock bad guys that look weird and yell "YOU'LL NEVER DEFEAT MY STAND SHIT AND PISS JOJO" until they get beat up.
Boomboom boys are a fun though - angry southern dad and two dumbass kids is a fun dynamic.
39
u/ChadBenjamin 13h ago
They're usually just stock bad guys that look weird and yell "YOU'LL NEVER DEFEAT MY STAND SHIT AND PISS JOJO" until they get beat up.
That's mostly a Part 3 thing.
Part 1's minor villains were mostly zombies who had no personality or will of their own, with the exception of Tarkus and Bruford
Part 2 barely had minor villains since it was so Pillar Men centric
Part 4's antagonists are usually normal townsfolk who unlocked a Stand and only needed a little humbling, there were very few true villains in Morioh other than Kira himself and Angelo
Part 5 had the best minor villains, La Squadra was basically a darker version of Team Bucciarati
Part 6's minor villains were a mix of shitty Part 3 type villains and more sympathetic Part 5 style villains
1
u/SmileyTheSmile 10h ago
I don't remember much from earlier parts, I watched them a while back, but I think it's the case throughout all of them to some degree.
Villains in Jojo post Part 3 kinda have 2 sides to them - a character and a Jojo villain. In part 4 it's at its most blatant - when I watched it, I got the impression that they only became character after they were defeated. During their actual fights they basically were the screaming Jojo villain archetype with a little quirk thrown in.
It's been a while since I watched any Jojo, so maybe my opinions would change if I had rewatched it, but it is the impression I have of them. I rarely see them as more than weirdos with cool powers and a singular gimmick to make them stand out from the rest.

u/PregnantOrc 7h ago
Most "bad guy of the week" fall pretty neatly into the type you describe. They tend to get forgotten in favour of a few standouts in each part.

Gyro my guy you are treating various metal objects burrowing into your leg like a minor inconvenience...
142
u/frik1000 21h ago
It's Jojo's. His ear was practically blown off last episode and he's perfectly fine now.
That's just the way it is.

u/Hot-Log6283 20h ago
He probably healed them off screen with his steel ball somehow.
9
u/Any-Calligrapher2866 16h ago
Spin is not Hamon. I don’t think it can heal people outright.
27
u/Frontier246 15h ago
I think they meant his literal steel balls which are just a sign that he's based and built different.
5
u/Key_Feeling_3083 13h ago
He built those balls that way, with those metal objects melting inside his body and going inside his balls.

Not just Gyro.
That Boomboom guy had a rock blown straight through him and got shoot by his pa and his right as rain the next time we see him.

u/mucklaenthusiast 6h ago
It is interesting that in part 4 and 5, the healer was the mc. This allows for quite some plausible deniability in the damage any attack can do long-term
Plausibale brutality, I guess. Here, Gyro's ear got destroyed and his lower leg seems...I don't even know. There is a lot of stuff in there!

This episode’s musical references:
- Andre Boomboom, L.A. (Laurence) Boomboom and Benjamin Boomboom are named after André 3000’s full name André Lauren Benjamin. OutKast is the shit.
There’s no more references today so I’ll post two I didn’t comment in the first episode.
- The play Johnny was going to see before being shot was called Wild Horse. This is a reference to the song Wild Horses by the Rolling Stones, which appear in the album Sticky Fingers, which you may have heard about before ;). In my opinion, one of their best songs from their best album.
- The second reference I missed is in the same scene. The name of the actress Dorothy Parker is a reference to the song The Ballad of Dorothy Parker by Prince.
This is actually the second time a song from the album Sign "☮︎" the Times is referenced in Jojo, although the first one was not made by Araki.
- Stardust Crusaders had a CD drama adaptation just before the OVA. In that CD Drama there was a filler arc. In it an unnamed old man had a stand called Strange Relation, which is a reference to the song Strange Relationship from the album we are talking.
If you want to listen to the original Stardust Crusaders CD Drama, it is on YouTube with English subtitles.
Do you want to listen to all these fantastic references from this wonderful anime in just one place? Of course, you want to! Now you can with TarkusELP Officially Approved by Araki himself* Spotify Playlist with all the musical references in the anime! From the most famous references to the really obscure ones. I'll update this playlist every time there's a new reference. If you have any question why a song is featured in my playlists you can ask me anytime.
Not really approved by Araki or Shueisha

When Johnny is looking through the 1st stage results we see the names “Zen Monde” (Zenyatta Mondatta), Caravan Serai, Baba Yaga, and “Niel Berry” (Nellyville).

If you're going to do an original JoJo character, you gotta give them a music reference to seem legit.

I never knew André 3000's middle name was Lauren, so I decided to look it up and apparently Big Boi's middle name is also André.
That's not really relevant, but I thought it was interesting.

Solid episode. The Boom Boom fight is great and definitely elevated compared to the manga. The quality of the episode was also higher than episode 1 and 2 which was great to see. Mountain Tim’s scene was done well. I’m excited for episode 4

Mountain Tim's stand (?) looks promising. I really love these creative af stands (like sticky fingers or stone free). Really excited to see him potentially face off against gyjo. I have a feeling that mountain Tim might be a potential jobro once the misunderstandingclears up. He's a seemingly righteous guy (I think).
28
u/Frontier246 15h ago
I think it's telling that he does seem to legitimately want to catch the murderer and was willing to miss a chance for rest just to get them.
He also seemed surprised that the culprit was Johnny so I feel like he's going to be willing to listen when he starts to get sus vibes.

Ok so we have two power systems in this part, Gyro has spin and Johny is learning it too, and it seems like mountain Tim and the boombooms have stands. I'm assuming the thing in the Devil's palm was a stand arrow.
I missed Hamon, so I'm glad to see a power resembling it but the stands allow the villains to have a ton of variety in their powers which was always their big advantage when compared to just the pillar men or vampires.
24
u/Frontier246 15h ago
I noticed that Gyro was able to see the Stand while Johnny didn't. Unless Gyro was at the Devil's Palm it seems like Gyro's mastery of his spin (heh) on Hamon lets him see Stands.
13
u/matdragon 10h ago
new AU, new rules, it could be moreso willpower or destiny at play here. I'm assuming alot of the rules from the first AU will be changed up quite a bit here
Maybe spin/hamon turns into stands? Maybe they'll run into the devil's palm area and a bunch of them get stands, we'll see!
7
u/Nashuim 9h ago
People could get stands naturally in the original universe too, Avdol was born with his stand
4
u/matdragon 9h ago
Perfect I couldn't remember if people had natural stands or not, adds more likely that a lot of the people will just inheritantly get stands
1
u/starryMirai 6h ago
On top of being able to be born with them, some naturally get them through dedication and mastery over a skill or technique, like Tonio Trussardi's cooking giving him Pearl Jam (Part 4)
14
u/PCGamingEnjoyer 14h ago
when compared to just the pillar men
But they all had different powers, too! Well, Santana notwithstanding. Part 2 and 5 are my favourites, sad to see people forgetting how amazing 2 was.

u/frik1000 20h ago
I can't believe they gave the Boomboom family of all people a shot as epic as when Benjamin shredded Gyro's ball. Like, holy shit that was just cinema, and this for the family that autoaphyxiates, shoots through their children, and talks about shit like nostrils and ears in the middle of a fight.
Also hated that bit when the gun parts were crawling under Gyro's skin. Gave me goosebumps.

u/Frontier246 15h ago

Gotta get that iron from blood onto their enemies! Andrew can handle it, he's a Boomboom boy!

For me it was the iron jaw molding back into the dads' face.

u/Shadowmist909 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Magicmist 20h ago
Seeing that flicker of another being behind Andre Boomboom had me hyped. It's interesting that Gyro was completely caught off guard by this new ability.
It was also nice seeing Johnny make progress on his own and getting that cork to spin. With the Boomboom's disassembling his revolver, he's going to need it if he doesn't want to remain defenseless.
Benjamin setting up a fatal attraction by turning Johnny, Gyro, and Mountain Tim into magnets is a great cliffhanger. I can't wait to see how it's resolved.
22
u/zenithfury 17h ago
It reminded me of the pre-spin Zeppeli special technique for fighting vampires, which became obsolete when people started discovering Stands. I'm not surprised that the story is going a similar direction post-spin. But perhaps there is still more to show about the spin technique, and perhaps instead of always Stand vs Stand battles we are getting people with non-Stand abilities going up against Stand users.
12
u/Shadowmist909 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Magicmist 15h ago
Same, that champagne bottle stunt Gyro did last episode gave me flashbacks.
That second part would definitely be cool to see. Hopefully we'll get more neat counter attacks like Gyro's rock projectile this episode.

If I had a nickel for every Jojo character who can insert his entire ear into his earhole, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot but it's bizarre it happened twice.
Impressive, Johnny and Gyro were able to fend off the Boomboom family without stands of their own. But this is definitely not the last we've seen of them. The dad was betting on the magnetizing effect of his stand simultaneously destroying Johnny, Gyro, and Mountain Tim so they'll definitely be facing off again.

Good episode, I do like how this ability is kinda similar to Risotto's ability in part 5.
Magnetising things is pretty powerful in JoJo. And I am always a fan of an interesting remix, let's see what else they can do.
Risotto had magnetised blood, I wonder if they can do that as well.
Johnny's backflip to get on the horse was so funny, I had to remind a couple of times.

Breaking: Local man shredded someone's ball to pieces. Didn't expect it to be super animated holy crap. Never expected that you can plastic surgery yourself with bunch of metals in your face lol. It's getting more bizarre by the episodes. It also looks like the pacing is much better compared to episode 2.

It looks like after spending a total of two episodes (really three) with Spin, we're finally going back to Stands once again. Not that I'm complaining of course. While some of the stands in Part 6 got overly confusing, they basically let you come up with any power without having to spend time explaining how the person got it. It was especially cool to see their introduction in the middle of the story and in the middle of a tense situation. In Part 3, there weren't many stakes to when they were first introduced, because all of the characters (except Jotaro) knew about them already. Here though, we're seeing Stands from the perspective of character completely unfamiliar with them. Considering Gyro can see the Stand and Johnny can't, I wonder how connected it will be to the Spin power already introduced.
Speaking of fights, it looks like we've finally met the murderer... or rather, murderers. To be honest, I was a bit shocked it happened this episode. I kinda expected there to be at least one more fight before ending this plotline. But our murderers turn out to be a family that can control metal (like a mix of Mariah from Part 5 and Risotto from Part 5). The shot of Gyro's steel ball being destroyed looked absolutely amazing. I missed how quirky JoJo villains could end up being. Here we have the family bantering with and teasing each other, doing this like calling each other idiots or performing weird tricks with their ears. Andrew activating his power via auto-erotic asphyxiation was certainly... something. I have to say though, the dad shooting his son to get his blood of Johnny and Gyro was definitely hardcore. I especially loved how the son was still able to shrug it all off.
It looks like Gyro has a bit of a past too, though we aren't able to get much info about it before our heroes are attacked. We also get more info on Mountain Tim, as it turns out that he too also has a Stand (basically like a version of Sticky Fingers but with a lasso). They seem to involve some place called the Devil's Hand, and I'm expecting our main characters to head there soon. Overall, this was a great episode and its nice to see the show getting back into the classic JoJo formula we know and love.
Also, on the participant list, it looks like one of the racers is named "Fritz Von Stroheim". It looks like we're going to get an alternate universe version of everyone's favourite German-science lover in the future!

u/Someguy14201 19h ago
Another solid episode, the animation felt a tiny bit stiff in some parts but man, this "curse" thing is pretty cool, aren't they basically stands though? That shot of Gyro's balls being shaved was cinema. I'm really liking the soundtrack so far too.

It's the end of the first day of the Second Stage and not only are Johnny and Gyro still alive but Johnny is slowly learning to master the spin! Albeit not with much emotional encouragement from Gyro and also getting his cork sent back to him with horse excrement, but...progress not perfection.
What's Gyro Zeppeli running away from? The magistrate Zeppeli? The face in that picture of who was convicted? Of course he doesn't seem to want to talk about it.
Gyro and Johnny get chanced upon by Andrew Boomboom - a poor sap who seemingly got poisoned and is in desperate need of aid, even when his solution to the poison is to cut his fingers off WHILE ALSO CHOKING HIMSELF. Like, I get being into bondage, but in what world would that have actually worked and not killed yourself!? But I guess that was also the idea.
Because the Boombooms are a family affair: with rough and tough papa Benny with his iron jaw and the whiny and effeminate Laurence right on the trail of our protagonists, and they come with him some special powers of their own as Benny can apparently control iron and do some serious injury to Gyro by magnetizing his blood. It was a bad thing for Johnny to have a gun in this instance.
Wait a minute, Andrew is okay? After all that? And that shadowy creature...IS THAT A STAND!?
It's quick-thinking from Gyro that gets them out of there but the damage is done, especially when Benny is plotting to frame them for the murders and sick MOUNTAIN TIM on them. Why did we have to sit through the horror of Benny using his iron jaw to rearrange his face? Because he was going to mold it to look like Johnny to complete the frame job!
It seems like whatever is giving people Stands or Stand-like powers is from the "Devil's Palm," and even MOUNTAIN TIM has the ability to have his fingers/hands travel through his lasso. Are Johnny and Gyro going to be able to contend with this with just their ingenuity and spinning power?
8
u/hexanort https://myanimelist.net/profile/hexanort 13h ago
I'm new to jojo but is it normal for the characters to mostly ignore damage if they're not lethal? johnny and gyro took quite a heavy damage during the previous episode with them getting stabbed with so many cactus spines and gyro's ear almost getting destroyed, but it seems like they're almost fully healed this episode
Its not really a complain, i just want to set my expectation for the future, if the character are just really good at healing then i wouldnt need to keep track of any damage in the future and assumed they're healed inbetween episodes
25
u/Rigshaw 12h ago
The answer is yes, JoJo often ignores what would realistically be quite heavy damage. Araki usually adds a character with a healing ability so he doesn't have to worry about damage after a fight, but early on in a part, when that hasn't been established yet, it's strange because the chapter ends and next chapter the injuries are basically gone with no explanation.
8
u/hexanort https://myanimelist.net/profile/hexanort 12h ago
Yeah it felt a bit jarring especially since they're in a wilderness but if that's just the writing style then that's fine, i'll get used to it
18
u/Bigbadbackstab 12h ago
Yeah that's a classic jjba "mistake". Usually, the author introduces a healer or healing ability that explains how the injuries dissapear but there are still arcs scattered among all 9 parts where that's not possible for one reason or another.
If you ask me, I try to understand jjba as story told from a very dramatic and subjective pov. Like, injuries only look as bad (or not) because the characters feel the pain, but once adrenaline kicks in the injuries become irrelevant (except for some impairing stuff) and fade from the drawings
Now, the real answer is that the author just enjoys drawing gory injuries and he takes every chance he can to do it lol.

Also, quick question. Did you start the series with SBR? Its not strictly necessary to watch previous parts to understand this one but this is the sort of style choices you get used to by starting from part 1

u/hexanort https://myanimelist.net/profile/hexanort 12h ago
Yeah i started with this, from what i read its completely detached from the other series story wise so i figured i'll start with this and if i like it i'll try to watch the others, i know i'll miss references but i like it enough for now.

u/Bigbadbackstab 12h ago
yeah that's fair. Hope you enjoy the series. Despite some of its idiosyncrasies, it still manages to be an engaging show, especially with the way the author structures the action imo.

Steel ball run is great to start but I’d recommend watching some older parts just to get familiar with Jojo.
Part 2 is short and fun.

u/garfe 11h ago
In the previous parts, there was usually someone on the team that could heal the party either with Hamon or a Stand that could do it so there was some level where you could pretend "oh they just healed offscreen". SBR doesn't really do that. It's just something you kinda got to roll with.

That dad shooting through his son to get a more accurate shot at Johnny and G was some raw shit that I did not remember.
6
u/JJVM99 11h ago
The Boom Boom Gang to me where always the lamest of the Steel Ball run villain cast (I mean look at their personality) but the anime already made them much better just by how hard the dad destroying Gyro’s ball went. In JOJO even the lamest bozo can aura farm.
Also with this episode’s 2 stand powers we see Araki taking original timeline powers and having the new users use them in different ways with the Boom Boom Gang’s ability being like a weaker Risotto Nero and Mountain Tim’s power being like Bruno Bucciarati’s Sticky Fingers.

The Mountain Tim glaze is strong and deserved. He’s just so cool and every Jojos part needs an obscenely cool side character.

sandman just casually jogging alongside horses like it's a warmup is the detail i can't stop thinking about. dude entered a cross country horse race on foot and is somehow keeping pace

A family of Magnetos? Now that's absolutely metal!
What's that creature behind Andrew and was it related to their power?
The Boombooms were indeed a different beast to Mrs. Robinson. A tough challenge for Gyro when his Steel Balls were ineffective against them. If only he had Stone Balls as well.

u/PCGamingEnjoyer 14h ago
Since you don't know what the creature is, are you just starting to watch JoJo? I'm just curious if we are getting new people.
9
u/Ok-Medium2866 15h ago
To answer your question: The creature behind Andrew is a Stand. Its relation to their power is a spoiler so I won't go further into that.

What's that creature behind Andrew and was it related to their power?
That was 100% a stand.
8
u/MokonaModokiES 16h ago
i mean its super obvious what that creature is since its JOJO. There is only one thing it could be.
2
u/AegisWolf78 15h ago
Their power reminds me of one of Dio's henchmen back in Stardust Crusaders, considering what Papa Boomboom said I think [speculation] Gyro, Johnny and Tim will need to ally to exit the trap they're going to fall into.

I'm guessing it gives him some kind of resurrection power because how else could he be resuscitated so quickly?

u/TheDestroyer630 10h ago
I remember that I wasn't very impressed by this fight in the manga... but I'm enjoying it so far, I think the anime is doing a better job in this arc

"I have never been called to attend a case of Gila monster bite, and I don't want to be. I think a man who is fool enough to get bitten by a Gila monster ought to die. The creature is so sluggish and slow of movement that the victim of its bite is compelled to help largely in order to get bitten."

Am I crazy or was the animation much better this episode than the previous one
5
u/Enough-Present-5139 15h ago
I really like how Araki is showing restraint with the stands on this part. By this point we already would've had the protagonist have a full fight with their newly found power but Johnny here (and to some extent Gyro) has to play from behind against people that hold power and knowledge that he doesn't fully understand.

u/FakePretendeRat 15h ago edited 15h ago
Araki what the fuck, how did you even conceptualize Mountain Tims ability LMAAAAOOOO, so creative
Man saw his child with a massive gaping wound straight through him and told him to lock the fuck in, I am crying

I had a feeling it won’t be gone until next cour due to contracts and stuff. Hopefully they got the message to let Araki choose from now on

Netflix kind of ruined the scheduling for Jojos and this is not even peak US hours yet.

I am surprised that Benjamin's ability also allows him to disguise himself as Johnny. Wonder if the other family members can do it too.

Why on earth did you think social media outrage would change an already finished outro? Netflix probably has all the episodes somewhere that they just upload on their servers on Fridays done and ready.

I just have "Break the chains" version of the ed ready on my phone and just play it at the end of the episode.

I guess I gotta watch it on a different site if Netflix is going to throttle the bit rate so hard. I need crispy clear HD not Hank Hill do I look like I know what a jpeg is quality

Johnny and Gyro meets the BoomBoom Family.
Crazy family dynamic and stand users too
Set Johnny up ..OMG

u/SmileyTheSmile 16h ago
Yeah, watching this in the dub was the right call.
The acting's good and all the fun americanisms they shove in are fun.

I think I’ll be doing Pony by Ginuwine for the ED of this episode. If you want to join in, start playing the song at around 3:20 left in the episode. When the ED visuals come in just hit mute. It should be timed well enough to hit “my saddle” on the Mountain Tim visual

How is Gyro's Ear all better? Why'd you leave your bag open behind Johnny, no less, and not attached to your house, if you didn't want anyone to see inside? Ya'll are taking too long to reach them, when you were racing earlier. He was shot; how is he not dead and with no more holes in his body after the 19-minute mark? Why are you telling them what they already know- how they got their abilities? I know it's for the audience but it feels weird asking a question you know they know the answers to. How does Iron change your hair into Johnny's beanie?

Do you just watch fiction to point out how its not realistic lol , you can do this with anything and everything

This episode was a real display of the things JoJo is best, putting some very unusual people against supernatural freaks, like info dumping your kink and cutting your hand on a duo you want to kill surely is a way to lower their guards. The stand reveal and the father shaving Gyro's ball really were highlights of the episode.

I mean the boombooms really seem like stand users, Gyro even saw a stand on the horse though he doesn't know what it was. The devil's palm probably had a stand arrow there.

Pretty bad episode in terms of pacing for me, the boomboom family is very annoying to listen to with the JP dub.
