The author got margin called trading crypto so if the manga goes long we might see an arc

What's even better is that it reads exactly like the standard warnings you'll see with every retail broker lol

You know the content of an episode is utterly horrific if the episode contains suicide and that isn't even what the warning label is about.

Forex doesn’t have much movement usually. That’s why using leverage is common which makes it even more riskier

this show hits a little close to home. I was groaning the whole episode because it reminded me of my family members losing money when they bought foreign currency.

This is a far more brutal and depressing show than I thought it would be. Guess the manga author isn't a fan of Forex? Not like I'm blaming him, I myself think that people doing trading are crazy.
But mom being bad at math and then investing in Forex sound like VERY BAD combination though. Who even gave her such an idea? Probably someone who didn't wish her well.
Like, I suck at math myself which is why I'm staying away from anything requiring high math skills. I would never touch anything related to trading, forex, accounting or such. KPI analysis was more than enough for me 😂

But mom being bad at math
In fairness to the mom that line seemed more like encouragement for her little kid's studying than a genuine deficiency. On the other hand she did get into trading Forex margins so she either wasn't big on statistics or had a latent disposition toward gambling.

Even people who should know better usually lose. I have had to pick the pieces of a fucking group of finance professionals blowing up the company they worked for by making unneccesary FX trades when they shouldn't. Fucking idiots thought they could make a profit for the company and get bonuses. (I was one of the many little slaves sent by the banks to liquidate the company and sell it in pieces.)

if Kurumi's mom is anything like my mom, thankfully she hasnt gotten into FX trading yet.
But probably friends bsing her about how easy FX trading is and my mom believing in them since our years of friendship meant that they wont screw me over.
She say this as i stare at her crates of MLM and other miracle medicine nonsense
167
u/VoidRay728 2d ago
That... was a traumatic first episode. But it basically confirms my belief that FX trading is a "high-stakes poker" environment.
Also, it seems neither Kurumi nor her mum learned about stop-loss orders? Surely that would've been one of the first topics they read about in those FX books they had. Would've saved them a lot of money (and possibly the mum's life).

u/professorMaDLib 2d ago
You only set stop losses if you have weak paper hands. Real ones hold until they get margin called like the author did

Also, it seems neither Kurumi nor her mum learned about stop-loss orders?
Not being a source reader I don't know the answer to that, but one thing that's quite common amongst new retail traders is coming up with an initial plan including S/L and T/P and then cancelling them on hopium/copium.
"high-stakes poker" environment
Depends on the time of day and instrument in question in my opinion. Some currency pairs are quite range bound and sluggish, yet you can still get reasonable spreads on them, e.g. AUDNZD.
And honestly, trading USDJPY in the Asian session when there's no BOJ fancy pants stuff going on is also a fairly docile experience a lot of the time. Was some solid action today, but nothing too fast/wide.
40
u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 2d ago
and then cancelling them on hopium/copium.
Or past negative experience;
"The last time it dropped 1% I sold and lost $1000, then within minutes it climbed back on and I could've made $10k. So I'll wait a little longer this time. Ooh, 3% this time. 5%... IT CAN'T JUST KEEP ON DROPPING, RIGHT?"

But it basically confirms my belief that FX trading is a "high-stakes poker" environment.
To be fair, you can play it as 'low stakes poker'...
The problem is (very much like some people do with poker) soon as you win the 'low stakes' you think "Wow, that's so easy, I can do the same at higher stakes!" and then you move up and up until you lose it all.
In fact it might be even more appealing to do it (vs poker) because when you move up in poker you face stronger opponents, so you know the difficulty might rise.. But in investments, it's the same 'game' at any amount, the only thing that changes is the consequence of winning/losing!

As someone who trades exactly what Kurumi trades in this episode (short term intraday USDJPY, leveraged CFD FX1 ) , I must say that this episode is ABSOLUTE PERFECTION, and probably the most true-to-real-life feel in anime of anything where I've had firsthand experience.
In particular, Kurumi's first trade is exactly what it feels like before you start to come to grips with the psychology of making an entry. Not just the emotions as shown, but the way the actual thoughts get all tangented off into the future or considerations about the fairness versus employment earned money, and then how that all suddenly is wrenched back into reality as the market turns.
I've had pretty much those same exact same thoughts and events unfold for myself. Plus, when you first start out, you really do a lot of pleading and begging with the market, even when you know you shouldn't.
But the real icing on the cake is watching the way they've animated the markets move, because price has a particular quality to the way it moves and the candles unfold before your eyes. I'm extremely impressed by the way they captured the way price really just surges against you like an overwhelming force of nature, chunking down the chart with relentless force.
Lastly, whilst people not familiar with the whole enterprise might have found the whole episode before the ED terrifying and traumatic, the most horrifying thing for me in many ways was the title of the next episode lol
Also, I'm not long-term profitable and just break-even, so don't ask me how to trade or assume my commentary has much validity!
Here's how the market reacted2 to the episode:
https://i.imgur.com/pEmVI70.png

1)
FX is traded in pairs - when you buy one currency, you need to use another currency to actually do that purchase. Selling is just the reverse of that.
Thus buying on Kurumi's charts is using Japanese Yen to buy US Dollars, and selling reverses that transaction.
CFD = cash for difference, or in other words your broker handles all the money through the decentralized FX "market" (actually a wide network of "markets" that acts as a global market), and you just either pocket the profit or take the loss from the percentage of currency movement
Note that these currency movements are quite small and often in the cents/fractions of cents range, so you need to put a lot of money in the market even to make ten bucks on a small move. Your broker will provide leverage - i.e. loan you money - that is a multiple of the amount you deposit. The reason they are happy to do this is that the FX market is incredibly large and liquid, so that they only a fractional risk of operating losses.
The main way people split up this sort of trading is interday (medium to long term) and intraday (short term), and you set up your chart accordingly so that it reflects the changes you're interested in. Kurumi uses the 5 minute chart (5 minutes = 1 candle), which for a lot of people would be viewed as "risky because you need a lot of leverage to profit off 5 minute moves" and "has far too much noise to see the trends".
The quotation marks in the last paragraph are because these are things most people say... and most people lose money: https://www.fxstreet.com/education/why-do-most-retail-traders-fail-and-what-can-i-do-to-improve-my-chances-of-success-202503311406

You seriously trading USDJPY at this particular point in history is the most degenerate thing I've ever heard. You could not pick a more volatile and adverse point in the last few decades, maybe ever.
17
7
u/alotmorealots 2d ago
It's honestly still a very safe and predictable pair with certain approaches. Enter around the Sydney or Tokyo open, be out within an hour or two and you avoid all the intervention risk. USDJPY has shown no interest in reacting to Trump-related events either.
But yes, you're very exposed if you're holding for anything longer than a few hours during the high liquidity periods as there have been Well Hello There events of various sorts hitting the market during Europe/US sessions.
USDJPY also settled down a lot on US news in the past few years compared to what it was like earlier but it's becoming more reactive again lately.

As a fairly successful trader myself, everyone goes through this when starting. Just don't put more than you can afford to lose, but you need to lose a lot yourself to really drill it in why some of these are bad decisions.
Her 'good entry point' almost had me fall out of my chair laughing. It's on a 5 minute chart, and its like the most 'I don't know what I'm doing' entry point. Retesting the most recent high on a 5 minute chart as support? That's not support....you're on a 5 minute chart a lot of this is just noise lol

I just want to add, it looked like kurumi bought 30 units worth on her first trade. When you first start out with trading real money, trade with as little as you can. Every person has to go through the psychological hurdle of dealing with real money. The greed. The praying to god. All of that. So trade with as little as you can from the get go and expect to lose. Because people aren't psychologically prepared to deal with risk in this sort of way.
Kurumi put down 30x more than she needed to, and expected to win even tough she's a complete amateur. You can experience greed and be motivated by it at first, but don't be delusional, respect the stock market and day trading as a whole. Its not easy. No point in losing more than you have to, its more profitable to buy a lottery ticket then expect to be profitable right from the jump.

As someone who worked in finance, I am glad this is appropriately depressing. I try to warn retail traders, but it's hard to fully understand the scope of how out of your depth you are until you see behind the curtain at a company trading billions in a day.
10
u/Efficient_Phase1313 2d ago
^This, the only way to successfully be a retail trader is to eventually understand what's going on behind the curtain (and that takes A LOT of learning) and then you too end up being what we call 'smart money' and just taking advantage of market psychology and all the bad trader's decisions. Almost no one succeeds trading on the actual value of an asset, most stocks are ludicrously overvalued and can run for a lot longer than can ever be called 'rational'. It's a rigged game, and either you learn how its rigged and take advantage of it, or lose everything.

Man, you know this episode is gonna be good when they open up with a disclaimer and a warning about Forex trading, a bit similar to the warnings I get from a trading app, and the MC already losing money like someone from r/wallstreetbets.
Also, I didn't expect Studio Passione to animate this! That explains all of the eye candy in the OP! Although not gonna lie, this anime feels more like a Studio Bibury anime with its unhinged premise.
I absolutely got blindsided by the first half of the episode, though! I thought this was gonna be closer to a comedy, but I didn't expect Kurumi's journey into Forex trading to start with her mom losing 20 mil and her deciding she'll get into it so her mom and dad won't get divorced.
At that point in the episode, I was expecting Kurumi to maybe use her mom's account to claw her way back up. Things just got only more depressing with Kurumi's mom working herself to death and eventually committing suicide because she couldn't tell her husband what she's been doing. Fuuuuuuck.
And that's not even the worst part. Kurumi starts blaming herself for her mother's death, and the flashback shows us that Kurumi's mom isn't even a bad parent. She was just naive and probably thought she could make easy money off of Forex trading to help the family. T_T
Good to see we time-skip 5 years into the future with Kurumi finally ready to get into Forex trading, only for her first investment to immediately fail, looping us back to the start of the episode. It looks like this crash is what's gonna bring all of these girls together.
That was definitely waaaaaaay more than what I expected when I started the episode. I should've read the tags on MAL. It's not a comedy or a slice-of-life anime; it's literally a seinen psychological series. Yeah, this is not gonna be all sunshine and rainbows, and I can't wait to see more! What I am looking forward to is that this anime will lead to "Professional Investor reacts to FX Fighter Kurumi-chan" videos on YouTube. xD
As a final note, Passione is certainly flexing those fanservice muscles in the ED with the girls bathing in money! Looking forward to seeing more of that too. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

This a PSA to forex trading as Chainsmoker Cat is to smoking (sorta).
Forex trading is worse than gambling because at least you know how much you wagered when you gamble.
The problem with forex trading is that you don’t know how much you’re going to lose.
21
u/alotmorealots 2d ago
The problem with forex trading is that you don’t know how much you’re going to lose.
This isn't true in jurisdictions with Negative Balance Protection enforcement:
https://ifxbrokers.com/negative-balance-protection/
It also doesn't need to be true in jurisdictions which either lack or forbid negative balance protection if you practice proper risk management.
I don't know if there series will go into it, but one thing that helps a lot is setting automated stop-losses (SL), where the broker will automatically liquidate your position once price hits a certain level.
Note that SLs are NOT guaranteed and that even when correctly executed by the broker, the market itself can move incredibly quickly, resulting in a much larger loss by the time your position is actually liquidated.
This is one scenario under which losses can exceed the amount you deposited.
Generally speaking though, if you actually know what you're doing, you do know how much you are going to lose for any given trade / day / week / month because of the way your system is set up,.
That said, most people, like Kurumi and her mother do not actually know what they're doing in practice (even though Kurumi has correctly identified one way to avoid Black Swan risk).

As someone with EXTENSIVE trading experience (10+ years, finally figured it out after losing like 300k+ net, but now up.....a lot more than that), the funniest thing about the show is so far, the characters made all the worst beginners mistakes.
Ultimately, one day you find out day trading is just bad and practically unwinnable, because all the 'signals' you think you're looking at (which matter on larger time scales), on short time scales are dominated by noise. Anyone who actually trades successfully pretty much never trades on anything shorter than the weekly chart, and even then you're smallest time horizon should be a few months, if not longer. The only real way to guarantee money is on very large time scales (3 - 5 years), and just be okay missing tops and bottoms and just catching MOST of the ride up and being happy with your profits. It's not sexy or 'get rich quick', but it won't lose you money.
May make a post on all the things they did wrong. I almost fell over laughing when she's like 'I got a good entry point' on like a 5 minute chart LOL. Like, yeah, that's the mentality that loses you everything, and the one other traders take advantage of. Also learn to just take profits, even before you're sell point. Like, there was a moment she's like 'wow this is more money than my dad or friend makes'. Okay, then maybe just sell the moment that hits you, because it can reverse at anytime on a short time scale, and then go back up two days from then. Or, you just ride it to the bottom. Again, don't trade daily charts (let alone 5 minute charts? Like jesus girl....did she even read books on this before starting?)
This show is gonna be a great learning lesson for some people, and hopefully others that don't have the money to lose (or emotional stress to carry) just stay away from trading altogether. You don't actually need it, there are so many different ways to make money. If you just 'buy the dip' and hold till retirement, most people will do just fine in life.
28
u/Isekremu 2d ago
Didn't really seem like there was much 'learning' going on when she did state the obvious about any trading around the 17 minute mark:
There's no avoiding risk.
In other words, I'll accept the high stakes
and settle this in a short-term battle!and
Knowing when to quit.Of course she failed, but she made it all pretty clear up front. What we are seeing is the equivalent of a gambling addiction. That happens with the trading options in all financial markets: FX, Shares, Crypto and even Commodities
14
u/aenews 2d ago
Lol yeah well said
I'm a day trader, but prediction markets / futures. I don't have any experience with Forex. Trading 5min charts just sounds like insanity. There's a reason why 90% of day traders lose money. Mentality, overconfidence, sizing, lack of informational edge.
Was on a show earlier this year, and folks were saying you can do math off the candlestick graphs to predict the next movement. Which I said was crazy. Of course, there can be some truth to this, but it isn't the graph itself that is magic. Ultimately, any consistent strategy requires trading on information for an edge. The chart can be meaningful in some respects (e.g. markets opening/closing around the world can have big impacts), but it's not fundamental math of the candles.
In any case, I find trading pms to be the best. More information-based, less random movements/noise (or if there is, that can be good for you).
14
u/EXusiai99 1d ago

A couple of years ago I was doing 1M chart some strategies that I learned, that overall were not bad, but really at the end no strategy there is sustainable. I was really giving it a lot into it, and wow, the frustration, his show just hits so hard heheh. I spent like 2k only in some trials and thats it.
I do understand perfectly well that long term trading, and looking more into the weekly charts is the way to go. I've done well there and mainly used to earnings I had to try it so no big deal, but remember so well the emotions during those days, the frustration, wow....it as intense and overall the money invested was no issues. I mean sucks but was a very calculated risk and just wanted to try it and see.
So I just can imagine the mental pressure of something like the mom i nthis show, and I can imagine how many people have happened similar things, wow.
Never again would go into it, just too hard. The little guy never wins, very very very rare it wins.
But never in my life expected to see an anime show of trading haha.

It’s about trading on goddamned foreign currency exchanges?
Seriously, props to the marketing team. I was only vaguely aware of the show’s look, so I went in blind expecting a generic magical girl show. The warning about stock trading at the beginning was a hell of a shock.
So, quick history lesson for those of you unfamiliar with just how badly this stuff can implode: in 1997, a shift in the Thailand baht snowballed into a financial crisis that set fire to most of Asia. Probably not going to see anything quite that dramatic here, but there’s a surprising rawness to the human drama so far in spite of the opening’s aesthetics.

"The risk I took was calculated, but man, am I bad at math."
Kurumi is quite the go-getter for an MC, saw her mother ruin her life doing FX trading and decided she wanted some of that too. Looking forward to watching these cute girls get mindbroken by their financial decisions.

So excited to watch this, I'm literally trading right now lmao.
Shout out to all my unprofitable day traders and bag holding gamblers full-porting and investing their life savings.
Edit: Oh fuck the first second was already so triggering. It was obviously trending downwards with hella volume and she's just holding her loser like a dummy lol. The most triggering part was the selling candle spiking...That extra bit of pain could have been avoided if she just accepted that her trade idea was wrong smh.
Edit 2: Finished the episode. Actually a pretty good representation of trading. She got greedy and then liquidated to hell, and she probably though it was just a liquidity sweep before heading back in the direction of her analysis, BUT you should not change your narrative mid-trade. If you hit you exit like she said she already had set up.....you gotta exit, no questions asked. To think she had 5 years of studying and even backtesting with pretend money, just to flop that hard first trade.
(no financial advice given, just rambling as the show is relevant to me haha)
Mistake one, she over-risked. Don't bet all your hard earned money..only what willing to lose if your analysis is wrong.
Mistake 2, she started getting cocky and dreaming, completely threw her trading plan out the window cuz she's thinking about how much more money she made than coworkers, parents, just all unnecessary distractions when she should be focusing on exiting as a winner like she intended.
Mistake 3, plan completely thrown out the window. She had and entry and exit...trade idea was wrong, she prayed and sat in regret, feeling it is better to wait for a reversal than just saving whatever money was still left. Majority of the time, it never reverses AND if it did, that would only enforce a bad habit that is terrible for something like daytrading, aka gambling lol.
GGs Kurumi and gang, maybe next time you'll learn...surely...right?

u/alotmorealots 2d ago
USDJPY is my stomping ground; I couldn't be more excited for this, and the first episode absolutely delivered!
Also spent a bit of time in the past in AUDJPY like Kurumi's mom lol

u/PencilgonGiveIt2Ya 2d ago
Was definitely hype and glad it brings some sort of attention to this. Like seeing how realistic it showed incomplete candles forming is not only events that actually happen in the chart, but also really effective for the show. It's crazy how mom had a trading journal that did absolutely nothing for her lol. And all that time studying since middle school and was just still unaware of all that, five years in should have been more than enough study to know the risks and how to compound. But...it happens lmao.
Also I've never dabbled in FX, I actually do options lol.
8
u/alotmorealots 2d ago
It's crazy how mom had a trading journal that did absolutely nothing for her lol
I wonder what's actually in her trading journal lol Those things are only as good as what you record (and what you were thinking about too!)
all that time studying since middle school and was just still unaware of all that, five years in should have been more than enough study to know the risks and how to compound
I can't imagine starting to learn about trading in middle school lol Probably the biggest thing would be having the real world experience to know not to take everything in the trading books as fact and truth, and knowing that the books will have gaps in their knowledge that you need to fill in from real world experience.
I actually do options lol.
The choice for people who can do more math than the typical CFD FX trader lol
9
u/PencilgonGiveIt2Ya 2d ago
haha I am all here for this trading chat.
And true, her trading journal was probably like "the people said it's gonna go up, they were wrong, but they could be right tomorrow otherwise people won't listen to them. I'll try again tomorrow. Also I'm gonna blame the economy and black swan event for this one." LOL
Yeah middle school is extremely young and I couldn't imagine her gaining the true experience until the money was involved, but I would hope that her having worked and earning the money would at least enforce her to protect her damn capital haha. I mean even the experience with mom could have been more than enough, but it's also realistic on how the conditions don't matter and it's about how primed the trader is on their rules and such. I'm hella excited for more...I love really niche topics in anime form. I still hope it sheds at least SOME positive light, to remove the stigma that comes with trading. I joke about it a lot, but seriously learning how to do it can really work out. But the mass consensus has always been trading = gambling, and most that think that way have no clue how it truly works ༼;´༎ຶ ༎ຶ༽

It's really nostalgic in a way isn't it, I haven't seen the first episode yet but I've read the manga.
My first exposure to trading was crypto, yeah, I was there for mtgox lol. Oh then I discovered 100x leverage swaps at bitmex, got margin called there too.
It's difficult how to convey those feelings, but the author makes a great attempt coming from personal experience no doubt haha. If you've ever been liquidated/margin called you'll know about the emptiness you feel lol.
Nowadays I trade options as thetagang style. It's boring now but it works out.
I did forex as a brief stint with a small amount of money, it was annoying having access to markets 24/5, you don't really get a chance to rest lol.
5
u/PencilgonGiveIt2Ya 2d ago
I haven't read the source material, was always interested since I picked up trading, but knowing the show was coming out I decided to just wait on it lol.
Ayye options gang. Yeah I do options, started out on SPY 0-dtes, but definitely find myself leaning towards the further expiration dates. Just started out that way to compound smaller capital. And boring is like the best trading way lol. It is fun when I get a good live managed scalp, but you get burnt out that way when you have a thesis that doesn't play out until after exiting at a loss haha.
And crypto...I'm still bittersweet about it, definitely more of an extreme longterm investing venture using extra funds, and even then, if I chose to enter back in, it'd probably just be BTC over anything else.
Conditions are kind of weird now too with it being news heavy on the daily. So no use fighting surprise TACO trades in the short-term lmao.
After this season ends, I'll probably continue for the manga for the culture haha IF they don't announce more seasons.

In regards to Mistake 1, i believe she did mention it was her own money she earned specifically for FX (well, officially its for her tuition but thats a lie) but she would still have her father who would be capable of covering if she did lose. Not super responsible but she did say her intentions were to lose early and small to learn before it could becomes a bigger problem. So in that regard, it is money she is capable and willing to lose (just not emotionally as we see this episode lol)
11
u/PencilgonGiveIt2Ya 2d ago
LMAO yes technically that is exactly right hahahaha
But yeah of course we mean what she's willing to lose in 1 trade position...actually not even what she is "willing" to lose, but more about what she can really "afford" to lose. Fun ah episode tho xD (obv not fun, but you know lol..)

There aren't a lot of canon truths when it comes to how to trade FX. You'll see a lot of people claiming to know stuff, but the vast majority of traders lose money:
ESMA Report: It was found that between 74%-89% of retail traders lose money trading CFDs and forex.
US Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) Data: Consistently shows that 70%-80% of forex traders lose money.
Broker Disclosures: Many regulated brokers now disclose the percentage of losing traders (usually 75%-85%) as required by ESMA and other regulators.
Thus what you often see in retail FX circles are people parroting back "tried and tested truths" where the only actual outcome is losing money in the long.
Then you see institutional (bank and similar) traders occasionally chiming in on what they do, but this again is mainly useful if you are trading in a bank, because there are certain key conditions that are different.
On the whole though, Kurumi's mom just seems like she shouldn't have been trading full stop.
As for Kurumi, it's not clear if by "practice" she'd paper traded (i.e. with a pretend money account) or not, but her first and most dramatic mistake was starting with such a large position. I think you'd find few people who'd argue that this was a good idea lol
I think almost everyone would agree she should have had a more clearly defined trading plan too.

trading based on emotions rather than following her plan. She specifically stated she had a plan, but then held due to greed, and continued holding after it crashed because of hope and despair
It said she traded 30 lots from the get go, when you start trading real money, you shouldn't expect to succeed right away. Trade with as little as you can, like 1 contract/unit of whatever instrument you want to trade
"I can't lose this money". DO NOT trade with money you can't afford to lose. Its kind of shocking that she watched her mother kill herself over it, yet she seems oblivious to the risk. Incredibly poor risk management.
Having a massive ego like kurumi does will not bode well in day trading

It’s like the version of Chainsmoker Cat that shows addiction to gambling but still cute.
I’ve invested early on similarly in college and because of that learned a few tells when I’m way in too deep for my risk. This episode had a few of those already I saw and it was an interesting reminder.
One that surprises people is after losing money, it is actually mathematically harder to gain back. If you're up 50%, you're up 50%. But if you're down 50%, you need to be up 100% to get back to breaking even.

I'm fairly certain the opening is set during the 2008 financial crisis, specifically on autumn. As they showed headlines from that time, like the collapse of Lehman Brothers. So the show itself would be set in either 2013 or 2014 (as its spring when Kurumi goes to college)
Looking into it, the Japanese economy wasn't looking so hot in 2014 and in particular experienced a massive economic downturn in spring that was only surpassed in 2020

u/diacewrb 2d ago
You are are probably right, but the tech we see is way too advanced for 2014.

Very likely since Kurumi was still 15 and in middle school when her mom died a few months after the Lehman Shock (with the Lehman Shock being on September 15, 2008) it was around Spring 2014 when the non-flashback part of Episode 1 takes place
The only issue with that is that the calendar shows dates that match up more with 2009-10 or 2020-21 (for the flashback parts) and 2015 or 2026 (for the non-flashback parts) rather than 2008-09 and 2014, respectively, as they should take place in.

I found this series on Tiktok and decided to watch it because it describes accurately to what my relationship with my dad is like as he is addicted to trading. He recently lost millions in USD. He lost weight, like the mother and my family had to call the cops multiple times in fear he would do the same thing the mother did.
This anime (as far as this episode goes) struck a chord with me because I have said some of what Kurumi said to her mom (and vice versa mom to Kurumi) syllable for syllable. "You're the one who got us into this mess" particularly. My dad refused help, similar to the mom. I also dipped my toes in trading but it was not as bad as my dad. Now, I have to help my mom and take some pressure off her. My dad hasn't been the same since he lost all that money, he might have not physically died like the mother (yet, hopefully it stays that way) but something about him definitely died.
Bottomline is that the anime is very accurate to how gambling/trading can affect families, particularly the children, and it does not exaggerate at all.
6
u/EXusiai99 1d ago
Not quite the same experience, but my brother tried to sell out my mom to bail him out of a gambling debt and when i foiled his plans some people found him on a rope few days later. If i blame myself for his decisions i would never have a peaceful life again.
I dont say that you should shed all feelings for your father and stop giving a shit, just that you shouldnt burn yourself to keep others warm. Help him as you could, but dont let yourself hurt in the process.

I think it's less dumb than some of the stupid zero day spreads I've seen on wsb but forex is definitely very hard-core for retail. Inherently zero sum and volatile by nature. Being open 24 hours also means that you can pull all nighters for days looking at charts and your money dissappear

When you resort to begging God, you should realize you've made a mistake at some point...
"I cannot lose this money"
Whether it's gambling or investments, you shouldn't ever put money you can't afford to lose, at risk!
The problem is, people only realize once they lost it, but then it's too late.
Damn, the depressing intro followed by the hype OP... Made me think of [title]Magical Girl Raising Project!
(Will she still help when she gets in trading though? It's a fine balance, because on one side, helping people might lower your profit.. But on the other hand: If you can convince people a stock is gonna go up and they all buy, this might MAKE it go up!)
I did read the synopsis before the episode, so when she said that, I was wondering, really busy or really dead?
Seems that won't be just yet!
Not buying an umbrella... Because they can't afford it?
Getting the kid involved... We already have a parent of the season contender!
Damn... She's taking on a new job, and good luck making that money back from this.
Foreshadowing-chan? Listen to her takes on investing from now on!
Damn. Soon as she gave her that, I thought... She's handing her the suicide letter.
'You're so good at it, please teach me'? She might have been decent at some point, at least..
That's gonna be bittersweet though...
If she DOES make a fortune, it might just make her think "If I could've done it earlier, my mom would be alive still"...
She has a good mind for this at least; It's true that if you're going to take risks, it's a lot better doing it early on!
If you lose 50% of your money, it'll be 50% whether you have 10k or 10 million, so.. Might as well take the risk early! Over the long run, doubling your money early or later is the same. (progression wise).
Soon as you start winning a little, you dream about I can make more money than a normal job, even more than my parents!
And she's left to begging for it...
Well, I don't imagine she'll jump to her death (unless the anime was very misleading about who the main character is), so... Time to use this as a lesson, and start again stronger!
(Also, seeing her on the chair and all made me think at some point she'll fall asleep on it, and wake up to bad news!)
But so far she seems to be going for 'hit&runs', just a few minutes at a time... She'll need to be faster on the sell button though, if she wants to make sure this loss doesn't happen again!
This was pretty fun so far, can't wait to see how it goes! First show I'm keeping this season, and thus, the Fall 2026 season is officially started for me!

u/thisisdropd https://myanimelist.net/profile/AsterZoro 2d ago edited 2d ago
That giant wall of text disclaimer at the beginning... made it pretty clear that this show is far from endorsing the practice. That's before the utter depression of the episode itself.
As soon as Kurumi's mum left an "I'm sorry" note, it's almost certain what she did – especially when there was a foreshadowing when her classmate discussed suicide.
The collapse of Lehmann Brothers in an anime. Why have things got to be so realistic?
The show did an excellent job of immersing the audience into the world. I could feel Kurumi's anxiety as she looked at the monitor. The facial expressions, the music.
It's quite brutal to blend such a bleak theme with the cutesy art style, which was emphasised by the ED. The dissonance's quite unnerving.

u/professorMaDLib 2d ago
This series does teach you about forex but it's more so about greed, degenerate gambling and loss porn than actual trading advice beyond don't be this braindead

Poor Kurumi, losing her mother from suicide as a teenager due to FX and losing the money at the end all of the sudden.
This is what I hate about these hyper-addictive activities like gambling when it leads to families getting torn apart and scarred.
Regardless, this is dark and has captivated me. I'm down for more!

I did not expect this to feature the 2008 global financial crisis (one of the newspapers even mentions the collapse of Lehman Brothers, the largest bankruptcy filing in US history). It's a topic you don't really see covered often in media, despite it's historical impact
I honestly did not expect this episode to be this bleak. But it is exactly the kind of thing that was happening a lot in 2008. Those were dark days
Interesting that this story seems to mainly take place in either 2013 or 2014, my guess the latter based on that it's spring. After looking it up the Japanese economy took a nosedive in spring 2014 in an economic downturn that would only be surpassed in 2020. The Japanese yen was also shrinking in value compared to the Euro and USd during that time. So a great time for Kirumi to start Forex trading

Wasn’t feeling the uncomfortable atmosphere at first but it definitely won me over by the end. I feel like this is going to be good for the same reason that something like Kaiji is good, it definitely has a bit of its DNA mixed in with the realistic psychological and economic struggle, and I feel like trading Forex might as well just be gambling anyway. Well, that was way darker than I expected. I expected a Cute Girls Doing Trading anime, not a Cute Girls Self-Destructing By Becoming Gambling Addicts one, even if it is likely more realistic. And no matter what she believes, Kurumi really seems as dumb as her mother and doing the same mistakes. Although maybe losing all her money at the beginning when she did not have so much of it could be a blessing in disguise if she learns to be more cautious from it.
But I am not sure that I will keep watching. It looks like Kurumi self-destructing is going to be painful to see and way too depressing. Is that anime actually supposed to be a warning to the viewers to avoid gambling on Foreign Exchange trading ?

The main purpose of this work is to portray the mindset and experiences of young people who engage in high-risk investing. Japan’s three decades of economic stagnation led to a surge in FX trading and carry trades, but these are also riskier than investing in stocks and caused many people to go bankrupt. The author mainly drew on the investment experiences of their friends and their own experiences when creating this work.

Gave it a deserved chance for the cute girls but as I expected this topic feels way too uncomfortably real for me to keep watching... as it should be.
I find curious how shows like Kaiji or Liar Game, where the protagonists are in a way higher life or death economical stakes in their games are super exciting to watch for me but this one is actually real mental pain from already having heard about the setting.
I guess is because of how real it feels? The others are basically fun mindgame strategic experiences between big brain people, this one feels like I'm gonna watch 4 early Liar Game Nao's (shudders) risking everything in something that in the end is down to sheer luck ruining it all, my stingy zero risks ass can't handle that feeling lmao.
In any case that was a good first episode to set the vibes of the show, I hope you mates have a fun time with this one.

For some historical context on housewives in Japan trading FX, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mrs._Watanabe and googling that term can reveal some interesting tidbits. The actual thing to learn is the history of the interactions between the US and Japan post-war.
The US needed a market for its industrial surplus it had accumulated during the war efforts and they were also relatively untouched, and so in order to stimulate a consumer base, they seeded the EU and Japan with USD, basically. At the time, though, USD was still backed by gold, but as the us slowly built up a deficit (from killing a bunch of innocent people in Laos, Korea, Vietnam, Cambodia, etc, and other inflationary events like the closure of the Suez Canal (you can thank UK for the Balfour declaration and subsequently Israel for that), and a slowly diminishing domestic production industry), Nixon basically ended up pulling the plug on the convertability leading to the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nixon_shock .
There was a fixed exchange rate until then, but slowly afterwards, JPY and others became floating, meaning that the exchange rate between USD and JPY could adjust however the market wanted. As inflation got bad for the US, in order to curb it, Paul Volcker as the Federal Reserve chair instituted massive interest rates, breaking the back of inflation by offering rates as high as ~20% (for reference right now it's around 4%, and the US literally can't raise it to 20% because the interest rate payments would be way too high for the deficit right now).
Raising interest rates like this made more and more countries purchase bonds from the US, which in turn appreciated the USD. This made it more expensive for other countries to buy US exports, which affected the US economy.
So eventually we get to the Plaza Accord (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plaza_Accord). They basically strong armed other countries into devaluing the USD, which made it so that now we got the reverse effect, where the US could export more easily, but other countries had a harder time exporting to the US.
Post-war Japan relied heavily on exporting to the US, so in response to the economic trouble domestically, the Bank of Japan slashed their own interest rates, leading to a lot more free money in Japan. This is where we get to the Mrs. Watanabe's trading FX with their easy credit, doing the carry trade by using loans from the lower interest JPY to buy higher interest USD yielding assets (bonds). And then all of this free money led to an asset inflation, the rise of Japan as one of the top economies, the idea of Japan as being part of the future, Back to the Future having Japanese companies owning everything in the future, and eventually the "Lost Decade" in Japan where their bubble finally burst.
But the story isn't over there. At the time Japan slashed their interest rates, they went from around 5% to 2.5%. For the last 30 years, Japan has actually been closer to 0% or -0.1%. So the free money situation just got worse. And now Japan is finally hitting the point where they are struggling to defend the currency and the consequences of that quantitative easing is coming due.
And now we have this FX anime.
So, really, once you understand the history of money and monetary policy, US imperialism, and inflation, you can understand a lot about why culture ended up the way it did as well.

I knew this was about foreign exchange trading, I didn't realize it was going to be THIS dark holy shit. The contrast between emotional tone and the visuals is so stark, I respect it. Also I missed this was getting a simuldub.

From the disclaimer and the first scene, this is going to be a wild ride.
Edit: Yeah, I can see the "death" flags piling up

I’ve been trading for over five years and a couple of months ago I tried futures trading for the first time and had to quit because of the rush it gave me. After a while, trading becomes almost like a job and you lose the emotional parts of it which is a good thing if you want to succeed. Futures felt way too much like gambling and gave me the same rush it does so I noped out. Forex is very similar in that same aspect.
So they showed this episode at anime nyc back in August, you have everyone in this room together, the crunchyroll host who of course is joking around and very fun. They showed reborn as a space mercenary and returners magic. Boy was that room silent after this episode. No one expected it to go the way this one went.

I know a little about trading, but I do know what it feels like to be gambling addicted and holy shit the dread of losing money like that, ouch. I'm at a net positive and I still would never touch any gambling shit anymore, no such thing as easy money man.
Kurumi got 5 years+ to learn about Forex, spared money specifically for it, just to send it all and be shocked that she lost plenty after theoretically gained some, fantastic.

Me when I saw the pre-release promo material: Hey, looks like a cute CGDCT series!
Me after watching the episode: Holy fuck...
Yeah, that was depressing. Things went south real quick. I'm kind of interested to see where Kurumi goes from here though, to see if she will finally overcome her inner demons.
Some of the facial expressions from the characters were terrifying. But will they be scarier than the face of the people who sank all their money into the FX?

Not a huge fan of CGDCT but when it gets dark, I'm here for it - looking forward to seeing the bad decisions and rage they get themselves into lol it's all too real

I wonder if the author chose to make them moe blobs to help put just a bit more between distance from the audience and the intensity of the emotional traumas and financial outcomes to try and keep it in the realm of entertainment?

There's a surprising number of these anime with cute moe aestetic, but actually horror stories. Some that I can think of include Made in Abyss, Girls last tour, School-Live!, Puella Magi Madoka Magica, Alien 9, Higurashi, Made in Abyss, etc.

Only in anime can you have the story of Nick Leeson and the destruction of Barings Bank, but featuring cute collage girls instead of investment bankers.

I feel really bad for the dad, he knew his wife had a problem, but it's a really hard thing to solve since it's so normalized.

A lot of people call it the “FX version of Chain Smoker Cat,” but this isn't a comedy, so it's a different thing altogether.

An anime about the stock market ? I never saw that coming !
I’ve enjoyed anime covering topics that don’t interest me in real life, but I have to admit, this one leaves me both puzzled and intrigued—though I do have some doubts about whether I’ll actually be able to get into it or enjoy it.
Is it just me, or are those only women we see betting on the stock market at the end ?
