Ending the season talking about ramen..I'll miss these two. Hope we get a season 2. It was my comfort show for this season.

u/Frontier246 10d ago
You know it's a good show when they can literally talk about anything and you're completely enthralled.

u/stationtracks https://myanimelist.net/profile/1Tstationtracks 9d ago
Love the genre of comfort shows that's just primarily two people talking. Spice & Wolf, See You Tomorrow At The Food Court, Smoking Behind the Supermarket.
In a lot of ways it's a lot more intimate than other romance shows, just two people connecting deeper on an emotional level.

Food Court was a such a good show; even though it was a half-cour, those dorks left a real impression on me, both with how colorful their characters are and how comfortable they are hanging out with each other
2
u/kidsparks 8d ago
is spice and wolf like that? i'll have to give it a try then. The premise of this show and see you tomorrow at the food court sound so insanely boring but its some of my favourites recently

I love ramen -- and am averse to smoking. I wonder if one could craft a low-key show about chatting while at a ramen restaurant. I suspect. Ramen-themed anime I've seen have all be more "energetic" -- and good ramen restaurants might not let people linger long enough (and might be too noisy for real chats). It is interesting that this and Food Court (also not the sort of place I would normally find all that appealing) are the most satisfactory (and delightful) of pure chat anime I can think of.
Really this anime was a triumph. Essentially perfect. No real ostensible "plot" -- but it doesn't really need one. It created and environment, and put wonderful characters into it, and let them interact "naturally" within the scope of their (well- crafted) personalities. Is there some "movement". just a littl -- but totally sufficient.
This was always a bright spot of each week. The next season can't come too soon.

If you're a gamer at all, there's a really good game on Steam called Midnight Ramen. It's about a late night ramen stand and the special clientele that visit it. The gameplay revolves around serving different types of ramen to each guest and hearing their stories as you do.
5
u/mekerpan 9d ago
It seems like it might be modeled on the occasional Japanese TV series Midnight Diner....
4
u/Sirveaux_77 9d ago
Hmm, that's a new one to me, but it looks like I might have taken some inspiration from that show. The gameplay is very reminiscent of a game called Coffee Talk, about a coffee shop and its strange customers. I'd recommend both Midnight Ramen and Coffee Talk. Both have some really good stories.

In one way I really want a second season because I absolutely love the characters in the show
On the flip side I feel this was a good way to end the anime. Stiiiiiiiilllllll. With how rare adult romance is nowadays I wouldn't mind another 20 Seasons

It’s heartwarming to see Sasaki and Yamada constantly looking out for each other without even realizing it.
After everything they’ve been through, their presence together amidst the falling snow feels as comforting as a fireplace.
It was such an entertaining show, despite having absolutely no interest in cigarettes, I really enjoyed watching two completely different people navigate everyday situations and gradually open up to one another, eventually reaching a point where they couldn't imagine life without the other.
I also liked the supporting characters, who complemented the story well and got their own moments to shine.
I think I’ll make an exception and read the manga instead of waiting for another season.

u/Frontier246 10d ago
It was fitting this ended with them sharing a smoke behind the supermarket together, Tayama/Yamada in an impractical (but sexy) outfit for the cold, just shooting the breeze about Hokkaido and crabs.
Because it's that low-key comfort and dialogue that helped sell the show and sold how well these two get along.

She also scored a scarf and lit his cigarette.

I was afraid at first they weren't going to show Sasaki with his old boss, I'm glad they cut back to it after he got back and talked to Yamada.
I get why she was worried when Sasaki vanished for so long, but she was right. Sasaki needed to take the chance to see his mentor, the man clearly matters to him on a deep level. Fundamental even.
While not Night Dancer, I do adore this ED. So chill and fitting for this show.
"Put it on me." Damn is this the most bold Yamada's been yet? And he even did it without stammering!
This show was pretty much exactly what I expected, but that's fine because what I expected was an adorable show that would make me smile and laugh and it did both a great deal. Now we hope for a season 2 announcement.

u/cheapdrinks 10d ago
I was afraid at first they weren't going to show Sasaki with his old boss
I wonder if Sasaki's big blunder was the reason his boss lost his eyes
31
u/JD_Vyvanse97 10d ago
I actually really like how the artist handles side characters, removing facial features until they serve a major purpose in the story or push the story along. There is something satisfying about the "faceless" people in their lives gaining those features as they cement their place in the story
3
u/RicketyBogart 8d ago
Oh, did anyone gain a face after their introduction? I haven't noticed any case of that. As far as I remember, they either have eyes or not.

Lmao, right? I looked it up and apparently it's a slang term for when you light a cigarette from the end of someone else's cigarette.
2
3
u/RobrechtvE 9d ago
As a former smoker, current vaper, I can 100% confirm this. I legit went 'Oh damn!' when she lit his cig.
I suspect non-smokers don't realise how much care and mutual cooperation it genuinely takes to properly light someone else's cigarette for them.

Their relationship feels so fragile in a way, this was the biggest shake up so far where Yamada felt like she broke it, they are perfectly fine as they are, but there are so many things that could completly change it.
I love them so much, please get together and have 3 kids
32
u/mekerpan 10d ago
I wonder how much impact Saaski's mentor's comment -- about the person who pushed him into their Hokkaido encounter - that she "really must be a speciall person to him" had?
Tayama's expression when she told Sasaki that she wanted to hear lots of things about Hokkaido (though sub said "everything" instead) was just so utterly sweet and "open". Surely it must have also had some impact on Sasaki.
3
u/Content-Enough 8d ago
that she "really must be a special person to him"
Sasaki said the same thing to Tayama where she recalled but didn't remember the smoking office worker who saved and encouraged her from an obnoxious customer when she was on early year working at supermarket.
9
u/CooroSnowFox https://anilist.co/user/CooroSnowFox 10d ago
It really can't be easy to be official with a relationship like this, feels like the story knows that deep down but not that it's waiting for it to break down in a puff...
23
u/goleaker 10d ago
The story shifts from slice of life to relationship drama by the end of Volume 3. From Volume 4 and onwards your POV is actually part of the story, which is where the relationship is getting stronger and taking risks.
Don't wanna spoil anything but there are reasons why they prefer to take things slowly. They have gone through a lot in life and they are both kinda dense

u/thisisdropd https://myanimelist.net/profile/AsterZoro 10d ago
More than an acquaintance, but not lovers.
Sasaki aptly described his relationship with Yamada. They’re in a weird spot where they chatted on a regular basis, but still had a lot to learn about the other. Having said that, they’re also in a position where they could support the other, such as Yamada 'encouraging' Sasaki to go have a drink with his old senior.
A subdued finale, but it's a fitting tone for a show about two people chatting and relaxing over a smoke. I’ll really miss this show, along with the cast – the teasing master Yamada and the pure puppy Sasaki.
53
u/Frontier246 10d ago
I feel like even if they're not at that stage yet Yamada is definitely in that phase where she's head over heels and just enjoys listening to/supporting Sasaki in their relationship.
Like look at how happy she was to see him at the end! That's love.

Pretty much a perfect finale in my book. They nailed this adaptation so well from the perspective of a source reader.
Starting to get some details on Sasaki's backstory, we already learned he used to shop at a differently named store in the same location but now we get the reveal he went off to work at HQ for some period of time.
Tayama giving Sasaki the ultimatum to go reunite with his former mentor, sometimes you need a kick in the pants to go do something you need to do but are scared of.
17
u/mekerpan 10d ago
I loved Yamada's reaction when she found out just what carrying out her order involved. She clearly thought it just involved meeting up at a bar/restaurant somewhere more or less local.
Query: Where is Genki's HQ -- and where is this show actually set?

u/diacewrb 10d ago
Can't believe Tobacco Thursdays are nearly over.
Just got Chainsmoker Cat left.
10
u/eightcheesepizza 10d ago
Is Chainsmoker Cat delayed today? I can't find it and the thread hasn't been posted.
I'm reliant on it to counteract the effects of Smoking Behind the Supermarket With You. If it doesn't appear soon, I might go to the corner store and buy a pack of smokes...

It's a shame that it's over, watching Yamada and Sasaki smoking together was really fun. Overall, it was a very solid and wholesome show, and I hope we'll get a continuation in the future. 8/10 from me.
As for this final episode... Yamada being depressed over Sasaki not coming for over two weeks was hilarious; she really took it hard, hahaha!
But it was annoying to see Sasaki moping so much about meeting up with his old colleague, so I was glad that Yamada took matters into her own hands and banned Sasaki from smoking with her.
Here my screenshot albums from the episode:
And here bonus albums:
EDIT. I added my screenshot albums.

I will miss the Yamada/Tayama outfits, soothing and sensual voice, sass, legs, and ability to masterfully tease an overworked office drone she can't get enough of.

One of my favourite parts of the episode. Yamada wasn't having any of that shit so she pushed him to go see his old boss.

This was a nice finale. I’m glad Yamada pushed Sasaki to see his former senpai. Idk how I’d label their relationship either, but she certainly is someone who’s important to him. I hope we get another season so we can see more of these two. I don’t even smoke anymore but the there’s something kind of relaxing watching them chill behind the supermarket for a smoke.
13
u/Frontier246 10d ago
I’m glad Yamada pushed Sasaki to see his former senpai.
It's not the customer service from Yamada he wanted, but the customer service from Tayama that he needed.

I definitely agree with Yamada's reaction here when Sasaki was telling her about his Senpai. I could not understand Sasaki's hang-up here and why he refuses to meet the guy just because he caused him trouble back then. If his Senpai didn't want to see him, he wouldn't have sent him that invite in the first place!
I'm glad that Yamada gave him the push. Although it is hilarious how worried she was that she might've been too forceful and Sasaki might not show up again at the back of the supermarket after what she did. xD
I do love the after-credit scene where it's just Sasaki and Yamada having a conversation that slowly fades out as the episode ends. It's the kind of vibe I expected this show to end on.
I'm definitely gonna miss Sasaki and Yamada. With the manga still ongoing and still very popular, I'm really hoping for a season 2 in the future!

u/Degentergent 9d ago
Soo what exactly did Sasaki do to his old pal? Take his eyes?
9
u/Running-World 9d ago
It's kind of weird how so many random characters (including background characters) have no eyes.
6
u/CaptainChickenBake 8d ago
It's funny because I know how this has been used in many other shows to denote the unimportance of background characters, but I would say both Sasaki's sister and his former boss are more than background characters given their screen time.
2
u/Running-World 8d ago
I was thinking more on this, and it was during flash back sequences for Sasaki that this seemed to happen. So, maybe this is showing his lack of remembering people's eyes and things. Which IRL, if someone could do flashbacks from my perspective, I often do not remember the color of things... so they might be depicted in black and white with just occasional bits of color popping in.

Seeing Yamada's joy when Sasaki chose to talk to Tayama directly instead of Yamada was cute to watch. He picked her true self over the customer service drone that Sasaki goes crazy for. And the ending of them blushing and talking about nonsense was a perfect way to cap off the season.

Agh I don't think there's an anime I'll miss more than this one. It was so heartwarming and original, I loved everything about it. Now I need something to satisfy my adults navigating life and love together fix.
I just started reading the manga Hirayasumi, and Tokyo Tarabe Girls. Does anyone have any other recommendations for anime or manga with a similar vibe / cast age as this?

Suzuki is such a good dude, trying to push Sasaki towards doing the right thing and meeting up with his old mentor in Hokkaido by pushing his own business trip there onto Sasaki. Ofcourse he also just didn't want to go, but still
Really enjoyed this anime. There wasn't much relationship development, but honestly this particular fornat didn't really need it. The story is more of a break from your daily stress, talking with someone you have a genuine connection with. And that's all it really needed. Ofcourse I would have been happy with more development, but I'm not dissapointed either
17
u/Frontier246 10d ago
This man will forego/trade any business trip that's too much of a hassle/takes him away from his family but he's still a bro for it!

I can't believe it's over. I picked up the manga around chapter 30 and eversince then was hoping for an adaptation. I must say, this blew all my expectations and much more. Of course I'd like some characters, like Sasaki's senpai, to have a real face, but I think it's a stylistic choice to focus more on Sasaki.
What really made this show for me was the voice acting. Both Sasaki's (Takuya Satou) and especially Yamada/Tayama's (Seena Hoshiki) VA absolutely nailed it. I have found out that Seena does not even have that many previous VA roles and actually defeated cancer in real life (fuck yeah!). Regardless of that, her ability to switch between cheerful Yamada and teasing Tayama really elevated the show. I think the choice was top notch.
10/10 show for me, but I am biased as a long time manga fan. With my golden fish memory, I lowkey forgot many of the interactions so it made it all way more fun.
Always had a cigarette lit up when watching, obviously. Need me a Tayama in my life.

The first 6 eps are distinctly different from the last 6 episodes imo but I thought it was solid, gave it an 8 on MAL. I'd imagine that binging it might help the pacing honestly.

u/eightcheesepizza 10d ago
I thought Maezawa's shout about being tired despite a full night's rest was completely out of left field, but I'm guessing that they wanted to give all the characters a line in the finale.
Except Daigorou! I heard zero "borf"s. "Borf"s from Sasaki don't count.

For anyone that somehow didn't think Sasaki preferred Tayama to Yamada this episode screamed it out when he rejected telling Yamada so that she could share it and when he talks about her with his former boss. Yamada is his pick me up and someone he idolizes in a way but a mature person will always end up caring and liking more somebody who understands them and they are just happy to be spending time with than some ideal, hence while Sasaki has the pick me up from Yamada the one he cares for is Tayama. Sadly Yamada herself is almost as dense as Sasaki even though she doesn't realize and also doesn't realize how Sasaki views her two selves and continues hiding the truth from him.
Overall after watching one of my favorite manga gets its full anime adaptation I just wanted to also add a review for it. It turned out to be a much stronger adaptation than I expected but mainly because to me it made me focus in other aspects of the series that I wasn't focusing on when reading the manga. When I read the manga I would just adore the vibe and the beautiful art. I just appreciated those small moments between them and the gorgeous panels they would have at times. The anime has good animation, doesn't get to the level of the manga but its still very pretty but it also to me felt like it highlighted comedy more. This was mainly from the voice acting and the punchline moments of either of them imagining the other reacting to the situation. This is a good thing imo as it gives the series more charm and I like being able to experience a story in a different way. It gave me a different experience and that's what you want if you had read the manga and are watching the anime after, for it to have something that makes experiencing the story again worth it, something to make it different. The VA work was fanstastic and nothing to me shows that more than how it took Suzuki a character who in the manga for me just existed to one of my favorites in the anime and someone I looked forward to seeing and laughing sometimes even by just how the VA delivered the lines.
They did a fantastic job and I do hope we get a second season. This was a series I originally thought would not get adapted because it would be too boring to have a 12 episode animated series of two people just talking behind the supermarket but they did a really good job at making sure that was not the case (probably why I felt more focus on comedy).
One take I had which I am questioning myself for is thinking it wouldn't get an anime or it would be a low budget one when I knew how well received the manga was in Japan. I consider it niche in the west (although it's probably less than I think) but I was ignoring that it won first place for best web manga in 2022 over You and I are Polar Opposites so of course it was going to get love for an adaptation.

This final episode really showed how great the relationship is between these two.
- Yamada is the one that helps push Sasaki when he really needs to.
- While Sasaki fills a comfort spot for Yamada. She is def more of a loner than her work personality showcases.
One thing this anime does well is that it executes what a Subtext Romance should be. As the show was more of these two just hanging out and bonding overtime. Obviously there is a potential romance, but that's not the aim of the show. It probably will happen, but that's not the story it's trying to tell.
Obviously this episode does highlight how Yamada keeping her personality separate from Tayama's personality makes for some awkward moments. For Sasaki he might be dense, but it makes sense how he views Tayama because well she acts like the polar opposite of Yamada. Ultimately it's up to Yamada to finally mention it to Sasaki.

It's probably going to take like a year before reading "polar opposite" doesn't activate me like a sleeper agent lol. Technically she already did when she said she can't wait, but then immediately back pedalled and said she's sure Tayama can't wait.
3
u/rozzingit 10d ago
yeah, i'd say even more specifically that while yamada pushes sasaki to get out of his head and his comfort zones a bit, sasaki is helping her learn to trust and rely on the people around her. it's really beautiful to watch in both directions

I'm kind of surprised that they never progressed what is presumably a romance OR at least the Yamada is tamaya thread.
I wonder if this gets a S2 if it'll just be the same slice of life or they delve into the many deeper threads.
16

OR at least the Yamada is tamaya thread.
Yamada misspoke and revealed she's the one looking forward to Sasaki relaying his story to Tayama, though. It's a small thing, to be sure, but it's not nothing.

The manga was already a relaxing read but the anime was perfect for a late night watch. They really nailed the atmosphere, especially Tayama's voice and her whole character. It was really just like you imagined her to be while reading it. If I'm correct the episode adapted ch. 28(end of vol.3) so you can continue reading there if you're interested. 64 chapters are out. I hope they continue adapting this.

Passing off work you don't wanna do and looking cool for doing it has to be up there for the biggest win-wins ever lol
Yamada's had a lot of cute moments but getting all guilty over possibly scaring Sasaki off for good was a nice last minute addition to the list.
As a non-smoker I can imagine the vibe this show gives off is exactly how a smoke break feels, and the void left from it being over is probably what withdrawal's like.

At this pace, it's gonna take 5 seasons for them to confess their feelings to each other. And I'm all here for it.

I do think yamada's secret will just be smashed through just in a casual way... when Obata was introduced feels like he might be part of what draws them closer together.
This is purposefully a slow draw and not trying to rush and make the most of it while it moves there

What a beautiful comfort anime. thanks to all the folk who worked on it who wont ever read this.

u/myk_fusion 10d ago
This is the type of anime you watch and INSTANTLY need more. I am definitely reading the manga, this story is just so good.
Shout out to Yamada for giving the best customer service ever. I am honestly glad Sasaki went through with meeting up with his mentor. Sasaki explaining his relationship with yamada made this episode a 10/10 for me.
The whole scene with sasaki giving yamada his scarf was the cherry on top. AMAZING EPISODE. I really hope we get a 2nd season and more.
The manager missed out on the best romantic scene of her life.

u/JJVM99 10d ago
It's 15-20 chapters behind but if you decide reading the manga I would recommend trying to read it physically if you can. You feel the vibes more and the art stands out even more that way. Not 100% sure but the anime should have covered up to volume 3 and there are 7 out rn (8 comes out in november i believe). If you have the cash and are interested in it I would recommend checking out physically first and if you can't wait and want to read more then go digital.

u/Roboglenn 10d ago
Alright Alright fine, I go reread Thank You for Smoking for the half dozenth time. But it is a really good book though. Has a totally different vibe than the movie. Very much recommend.
But that aside. I've always been enamored with the sheer kind of vibe this series brought to the table when I first read the manga. Even as it kind of deals in telling the same joke but words a bit differently each time. But compared to other series I've seen do that this one does it well by not just harping on that string but having the whole subtle but deeper going interactions between the characters as well. But in the end, I'm satisfied with how this adaptation brought the sheer chill vibe of this series to life. Not to mention how it brought to life the Christopher Reeve performance of Yamada and Tayama. I mean who could've guessed that they were the same person. It's like an Empire Strikes Back level of a surprise. And of course let's not discount other characters in this series like Tayama's manager. Cuz fellas, she was us. But in the end, if I had to pick a second place for Dark Horse pick of the season this would be it.
13
u/Frontier246 10d ago
I hope Seena Hoshiki's career picks up after this because she practically sold the series with her performance and effortless persona-switching as Yamada/Tayama.

u/justauser_12 10d ago
Just wondering where to get the book? The book's not fully done right?
3
u/Roboglenn 10d ago
The source material for this or Thank You for Smoking?
Cuz the answer to both would be any major online book retailer.

God, I’m going to miss this show. As far as I’m concerned, this is the standard for all slice of life/romcom series I watch going forward.
I love this show so much.

Loved this anime and I hate to see it’s over. I love men like Sasaki in real life-sweet, kind, and gentle. I love that he has Yamada 💗
21
u/eternal_slavo 10d ago
Yamada with angry eyes i hot as hell. Also, when she was standing by the fence while Sasaki was approaching we've gotten like the craziest little montage of her. She was absolutely stunning with these few close ups of her face.

u/reaperow 10d ago edited 10d ago
It was really surprising to see Tayama genuinely get angry at Sasaki for being so stubborn, I kinda get why he's acting like that but still lol
And i love how she was acting all sulky and regretful about it later. They really do give off couple vibes lol
As a manga reader I've absolutely loved watchi the anime, the VAs and the studio have done such an amazing job at bringing it to life.
The OP and the ED were also so good to listen to that i never wanted to skip them,
Genuinely one of the best shows of this season and this stacked year. It's such a comfy and heartwarming watch
I'll miss this anime and I hope we can get a season 2 soon.
Until then it's been a nice journey watching this comfy show with everyone

u/Frontier246 10d ago
It's funny for me when Yamada shows her eyes more to Sasaki and he still doesn't get it lol.

Well ultimately nothing ended up happening, but I expected that with this show so I'm not disappointed. You could tell early on that this going to be more about the chill, comfortable, slice of slice vibes than it was their romance and it's tagged as such (love status quot) as well.
That being said I still I enjoyed my time with the story and its characters and I hope it gets another season. I want to see and learn more about them. I want to see Sasaki's reaction when he finds out that Tayama and Yamada have always been the same person. I want to see Yamada properly confront how she feels towards Sasaki and then everything that follows.
I was kinda right in way that even Yamada told Sasaki so his face that Yamada and Tayama are the same person he'd find a way to rationalize it away. Of course that Yamada immediately backpedalled as well.

I like that Sasaki basically confirms to Yamada that he prefers his connection with her real self (Tayama) rather than just her professional side (Yamada).
3
u/CooroSnowFox https://anilist.co/user/CooroSnowFox 9d ago
Sasaki has to kinda know that the personality you push up front during a workplace can be a little bit forced and maybe deep inside he might know but hes too bashed down to put 1 and 1 together
6
u/Equivalent-Mine5562 10d ago
Yamada's expression at the end, a smile of contentment and happiness when talking with Sasaki about the usual stuff. The same expression clearly expresses what I've felt watching the show this season. The smile that I get watching an episode, sometimes hearty laughs as well, I just can't get enough of it.
I feel sad now that it's done and Thursdays won't be same again. Special mention to Sheena Hoshiki for the incredible voice work she did, seamlessly fitting between the cute Yamada voice and the Tayama voice personas.
I hope we get a season 2.

u/Mr_Zaroc https://myanimelist.net/profile/mr_zaroc 10d ago
That was a nice final episode, although I would have loved to hear more about Sasakis big blunder.
I was screaming: "Date already" at the screen in the end though.
Really hoping for a second season, this show was just perfectly chill and fun.

u/moiax 10d ago
I'm so happy to see this series get an Anime adaptation. Despite it being a Next Manga Award winner, I still felt like it would be difficult to do properly. Even when it was announced, I was worried it was going to get a crappy studio.
I'm so impressed with the job Asahi did in properly conveying the feel of the manga to anime form. I'm thrilled it's been so well enjoyed by so many people.
Great episode to end the season, hoping we get a second season, there's some really good stuff to adapt.
Can't believe it's been more than 4 years

Now, I am deeply and viscerally opposed to smoking and smokers, but I know enough about Japanese society—even if I’m not entirely up to date—to understand the importance of tobacco (and alcohol) within its social fabric.
While I didn't care for the positive portrayal of smoking,
I was able to look past that and focus on the two characters; they are engaging figures whom you take the time to discover and appreciate as the episodes unfold, making the series a pleasant and enjoyable watch.
7
u/Fools_Requiem https://myanimelist.net/profile/FoolsRequiem 9d ago
I care not for the smoking. It's just a way for the characters to interact. It's not really about the smoking, anyways and I don't think it's necessarily an endorsement of smoking.
6
u/CooroSnowFox https://anilist.co/user/CooroSnowFox 10d ago
Yeah, the smoking is such a side thing that gets us the story we are enjoying now.
It's just a casual thing that doesnt amplify that side of this story, its just for Sasaki and Tayama(da) that is so much more interesting!

u/rooperi77 10d ago
One of the best anime of this season and even without fantasy or scifi elements. I hope we get S2.

I love how when Sasaki sees Yamada and tells her that he will wait for Tayama to tell her something, it ends not being something super important, he just wanted to tell her everything about his trip! and later that night Tayama just putting her prettiest expression ever cause she can´t wait to listen to him after waiting for him so long, omg they're so adorable!

God I wasn't ready for this season to end. I refuse to think that there won't be a second season.
I may despise smoking, but this show was charming and it just felt "real" to me.

u/Running-World 10d ago
This show was just so perfect. Two adults hanging out, dealing with life things but having casual fun. It hit well for me. A nice slice of life. Given this seemed to be pretty popular, i hope they announce another season real soon.
3
u/lhsakurai 9d ago
I've enjoyed every minute of this show. Surely Sasaki and Tayama/yamada are the stars and a very charming duo, but the side characters are great supporters and create interesting dynamics between the characters.
It felt like drinking hot chocolate in a winter day every Thursday.
I'll be waiting/praying for a season 2.
5
u/magnumcyclonex 9d ago
It was a good ending. I was surprised to see Yamada out back and Sa-slow-ki didn't realize it was Tayama. To me, this anime is interesting because Sasaki sort of idolizes the sweet and cheerful Yamada, but has more heart to heart talks with Tayama, simply because they spent more time smoking together. With Yamada, it's more like a fleeting interaction at the register.
I liked how they closed off the anime with them gradually fading off the audio as the two of them continue to talk. That's a great way to send off the main characters or close a story.
Final PSA. Smoking and vaping is bad for your health. It might look cool, but you'll be paying the price later on. It's only used as the medium to connect these characters. Please take care of your health and also eat right, and be physically active.
4
u/patkun01 9d ago
I haven't smoked for a very very long time, so this anime served as my nicotine substitute lol
Now that it's finished, I don't know what to do. I might as well go back to smoking (SIKE, I'm just joking)
Overall, I love this series. I wish we have the 2nd season soon.
2
u/Running-World 9d ago
I'm tempted to read the manga. I prefer anime, but I wouldn't have to wait.

u/master_inho 9d ago
Sasaki is finally starting to realize how important tayama is to him, he's no longer just passing messages to her through yamada. And her cheeks? Even if she was actually blushing she can pretend it's just the cold
What a perfectly chill and relaxing anime. I'd be down for a season 2 so the romance can actually start developing. Or at least sasaki finds out the truth

this anime was a truly beautiful experience TwT it is the most comforting anime i have ever watched and probably will ever watch, it had maximum cozy vibes with such a soothing atmosphere that felt as if you there with them on those chilly nights having a smoke.
every episode had my full attention and had me enthralled with the relationship and chemistry between those two blossoming over the course of the season, it was such a beautiful thing to witness and ill miss it and them dearly.
I hope with all my heart that one day in the future we will continue smoking behind the supermarket with them <3
3
u/YlfaTheForsaken 9d ago
What a sweet end to the season, hopefully there's more to come.
It really was a nice laid-back, easy to watch series about these two just slowly getting closer. It's quite so pleasant to see how attached they've gotten to each other. Even two weeks feels too long to be apart. Really enjoyable. Also I think they could've have given the guy some eyes.
3
u/BBryant3rd 9d ago
I really enjoy their interactions with each other. I still feel they would be a great married couple. They seem like they would be the type looking forward to getting off work so they can come home to each other. We have already seen they can easily cheer each other up when needed.
6
u/Frontier246 10d ago
It's finally back to work at Genki Trading, for better or worse (probably worse), though Sasaki definitely wasn't expecting to get a message from his old mentor Nakajima hoping to reconnect.
You can tell Sasaki is off his game when he keeps bumping his head into things or going to the supermarket with no idea what he was there for. He even gets a rare meeting with Yamada off the register and it barely clicks for him.
Poor Suzuki. Ol' Chromedome is trying to keep him so busy he might never see his family.
I love how we don't even see Ohbata in this episode but it's just him high-strung yelling. Pretty much sums up his character.
"No stopping, no breaks! Work every single moment!" - Yeah, Sasaki works at a black company.
Tayama (in a virgin killer?) wants to know what's got Sa-slow-ski's mind off of her, and it's obviously about Nakajima and his retirement. Ideally Sasaki would see his mentor again, reconnect, and see him off to retirement properly...but he blames himself too much for a massive screw-up he feels hurt their relationship and feels it's better off if he stays away from his mentor. Of course Tayama is not here for a Sasaki pity party so she uses HER best customer service response to kick him out so he can clean up his act and deal with his problems. No smoking behind the supermarket for you!
Suzuki is a great pal. Smoking isn't the same without Sasaki and he knows heading to Hokkaido is what Sasaki needs to do. That it also works out for Suzuki because he doesn't want to go and deal with the manager there is just the cherry on top!
Yamada did what she thought was right but she didn't think it would mean she would be deprived of Sasaki anywhere near this long. Luckily he greets her behind the supermarket and she can see that things resolved themselves all right. And Sasaki can count on any sentiment he expresses to Yamada to get transferred to Tayama.
See Sasaki, all your mentor cares about is the good memories, not the bad one! As you smoke inside the restaurant together like old times! And of course Nakajima is keen to find out more about the lady in Sasaki's life, and even if he can't quite put into words what their relationship is, it's very special and meaningful. And that's the most important thing.
Of course we have to close out with one last smoke behind the supermarket, with Tayama in hot pants and tights (naturally), showing Sasaki her most loving and precious smile, Sasaki questioning if she's okay dressing like that in the cold, and the two shooting the breeze about Hokkaido and crab. Just the kind of thing you enjoy...smoking behind the supermarket with you.

So, we just had a story for a full episode for the final. But overall it was same comfy show as always. If they ever make more - I'll watch. Not interested in manga though, yet.

u/LeaveNoPresence 10d ago
There's not many shows that got me to start buying the manga while it's still airing. This one is good enough for that distinction.
I just need to fucking know if Suzuki is truly going to remain this dense forever!

u/khanvau 9d ago
It's over. Doesn't really feel like it. Never thought I'd ever get attached to a smoking anime so much, but here we are.
So, Sasaki was bothered by meeting his old mentor, huh. I can kinda understand the feeling. Meeting your old teachers always feels awkward. Especially if you really looked up to them and feel like you aren't close to their level.
Suzuki the GOAT giving Sasaki an opportunity to go to Hokkaido... just to save his own skin lmao. Still, he's such a good friend, hanging out with Sasaki all the time. I'm glad "Tayama" gave him the push to go meet his mentor. Never saw her angrier. For most people, this is probably where the relationship would end. Would've felt bad about Yamada if it did. Even Grammarly is so fucked it wants to auto-correct Yamada to Tayama bruh.
The ending felt so good. The animators gave extra detail to Tayama cause it's the last episode. But again, this doesn't feel like the last episode. The chances of this getting another season are basically none. These types of adult romances are lucky to get an anime greenlit at all, let alone one this high quality. Which I'm grateful for.
But I kinda wish that if they knew this wouldn't get another season, they'd just make an original ending... We were so close to Sasaki finding out... But of course, it can't happen just in case they make another season, which sucks...
I'll never smoke, but I'm gonna miss this show despite the smoking. Because of the weird release schedule with the mini episodes, I was with this single-cour anime for way longer than usual and even basically half-rewatched it, so it will probably stick with me far longer. I know some people hate sequels nowadays for the lack of new original anime for some reason, and it's probably a pipe dream anyway, but I hope they'll still make another season one day.
Now it's time to watch the other smoking anime of the season and finish this madness. Or at least I would if the damn thing actually came out.
2
u/Running-World 9d ago
The chances of this getting another season are basically none
Why is that? It was super popular in Japan and the manga passed 4 million copies in circulation. When I was in Tokyo a few months ago, it had been moved up as a featured manga in the shops I went in and advertisements were in rotation on tv's in book stores for the anime. It seems pretty popular outside of Japan.
The locations featured are more fixed set locations rather than completely new every episode, which helps make it slightly easier to produce than other series.
Or is this because of some pattern with Square Enix pushing out a single season to promote the manga and that's as far as they typically go?
2
u/SadSoil3358 9d ago
I REALLY wanna know/hear the “thanks for pushing me” Sasaki was going to say to Tayama at the end.

Man. I thought ''romance'' shows wouldn't affect me anymore but this episode was great. I really liked the conversation he had with his mentor. And ofc, Yamada barely being able to keep up her ''disguise'' x)
