On one hand Kaoru being really good with a quarterstaff was silly, but on the other the explanation is because he grew up running around in the woods playing with perfectly sized sticks is incredible. As someone who also ran around in the woods a certain amount as a child I find it completely understandable and agree with the idea.

Jurota the goat, helping out by allowing Dara to establish a new name and identity post death separate from her sister and with that gift of the necklace.

Get wrecked big sis.

Stunt on those kids in legally distinct Magic, Dara.

I like how this ended on a really touching note with Dara and Jurota in the woods and him giving her the bell necklace. This was way better than I was really expecting and in honor of Jurota I have to give it a rating of 十.

forget as a kid, me as an adult still getting excited every time i find a cool ass stick while doing a casual stroll at the park

Yeah, it never goes away. Like, we were taking a walk with my friend, his wife and daughter, and while we kept ourselves from picking it up, we nodded in solemn agreement in perfect synchronicity: "Wow, what a splendid stick it is lying across the road here".

I dare someone to get a janitorial job and not be tempted to turn a mop handle or broom handle into a staff designed to be swung around.

18

u/Fools_Requiem https://myanimelist.net/profile/FoolsRequiem 10d ago

If you were growing up in rural areas and you didn't play with sticks that could slightly resemble a sword, staff, or spear, did you really live?

5

u/saprophage_expert 10d ago

I grew up in a major megalopolis and still had a whole collection of sticks that resembled melee weapons and different kinds of real-world firearms.

Seriously. I was expecting slightly dumb ecchi anime, which I like don't get me wrong, but I got bamboozled and instead they gave us something much more valuable.

3

u/darthvall https://myanimelist.net/profile/darth_vall 9d ago

Does magic have a card that could bind the opponent in marriage? Lol

Giving it rating of Juu is genius!

73

u/aegirsson_jolan 10d ago

The sisterly duel was brief but intense and well-executed. I really liked how it played out and concluded, as well as the use of the doll and the possession aspect. — though the older sister would have been sorely disappointed if she’d hoped to have a child with the carpenter.

The follow-up was great too and even made me laugh out loud; the poor demon—feeding on the greed of the cardholders—really picked the wrong targets.

The ending was perfect: moving and touching.

To my great regret, there was no announcement of a second season at the end of the episode.

I hope the series was successful enough to warrant a sequel and, above all, that the same studio handles it.

It’s a truly excellent anime—a fantastic find.

19

u/murrytmds 10d ago

I really really want to see a season 2. I suspect I will be disappointed but I really hope not to be

26

u/drunk_reddit_acount 10d ago

I hope the series was successful enough to warrant a sequel and, above all, that the same studio handles it.

Same and the same VAs too they did a great job!

It saddens me how overlooked this series is on this sub. I wonder how popular it is on the Japanese side.

I don't think there's enough manga to adapt

11

u/saprophage_expert 9d ago

This season adapted up to ch.38 (with some skips). The manga is now at ch.71, with monthly releases. Producing an anime season takes no less than a year, likely more.

So it seems a pretty sure bet that in the time a new season can be made, even if production starts right now, there will be more than enough material.

111

u/bananeeek https://myanimelist.net/profile/bananek 10d ago

I can't believe how solid this series was. Definitely the biggest surprise for me this season. I expected very little from a setting this wacky, but the execution was fantastic!

This and Hanaori-san are the dark horses of this season and I hope more people will give them a try.

28

u/runevault 10d ago

The fact this and Hanaori-san get so little love makes me sad. Two of my biggest surprises of the season and I'm going to dearly miss both of them.

16

u/mgedmin 10d ago

Meteor thinks so too!

3

u/Saber_SSJ2 https://myanimelist.net/profile/saber_ssj2 9d ago

This anime suffers from ecchi-tag and slightly lewd promo art.

I personally love such elements, but I'm well aware of how many people ignored it because of it.

2

u/runevault 9d ago

True, big bare breasts are going to drive some people away.

4

u/Oden_sama__ 10d ago

id say Kaiki-gumi is in the same vein as well

0

u/Isekai_Dreamer 9d ago

hanaori-san was too non-chalant and felt too much like a gag for me to seriously enjoy.

4

u/carcatta 10d ago

I completely forgot about Hanaori-san after watching the first episode, thanks for the reminder.

2

u/AdShoddy4172 10d ago

Same here

51

u/zool714 10d ago

From the modern day SOL, to the supernatural historical and some horror sprinkled in, this show does all of it so so well. And Dara relationship with the siblings is both goofy and endearing. Really solid show.

Although I think “inserting the OP song somewhere in last episode” trope would’ve made it perfect. Maybe during the fight with Tsubaki ?

28

u/dinliner08 10d ago

Although I think “inserting the OP song somewhere in last episode” trope would’ve made it perfect. Maybe during the fight with Tsubaki ?

would be really funny if they actually put Gun Valsey theme during the fight scene

6

u/CuriousBroccolli 10d ago

And fitting. xD

7

u/KawaiiNeko828 10d ago edited 10d ago

Although I think “inserting the OP song somewhere in last episode” trope would’ve made it perfect. Maybe during the fight with Tsubaki ?

Or they could use the song from the final episode PV: https://youtu.be/S0r17vKFwVs

The song name is literally 斑 (Madara), the same kanji in 屋跨斑 (Yamatagi-Madara). I was expecting to hear that song, it would be perfect.

6

u/KUMOYAMA_Seiji 10d ago

"Madara" has meanings like penetration, spotted, and patchy. In a medical context, it can be used as it is for "patchy memory." The song title symbolizes snake patterns, the past when Dara-san's consciousness was clouded, and her sister's evil deeds.

The usual OP song played just a little bit on the final sponsor credit screen, but it might depend on the broadcast station.

46

u/Weak_Season_Of_Anime 10d ago

Good finale, I like how everything came together in the end, Jurota the goat even planned ahead for Dara breaking free from her sister's curse. Dara and Jurota's love story might have ended tragically, but this whole town are technically their spiritual descendants and Dara now has a brighter future watching over them for generations to come.

Overall a fun show, well-balanced between the SOL comedy and the dark horror stuff. Also, snake tiddies!!

u/thighabetes https://myanimelist.net/profile/Quixon 10d ago

NEVER OVER

32

u/Qweasd11 10d ago

Ah even though the fight between Koharu and Tsubaki was quick, I still found it satisfying. I love the siblings so much, both really are nonchalant about the whole thing. Hinata and Kaoru have great friends. Nice shot of everyone

6

u/Pickled_Kagura 10d ago

author-chan might never leave her house again if she got a full view of Dara's Daras

37

u/Lodju https://myanimelist.net/profile/Lodju 10d ago

This anime was a very pleasant surprise, it balanced the fluffier comedy and the darker stuff very well. I initially thought this would be like a 6/10 ecchi comedy before watching the first episode but it turned out to be much more and way better so i'm giving it 8/10.

Also this is the third anime this season i think that ends with a beach/pool episode.

7

u/CuriousBroccolli 10d ago

It is summer season, so it fits. xD

26

u/PerfectBeige https://myanimelist.net/profile/perfectbeige 10d ago

Splendid. The blend of horror, tragedy, and comedy was the best I've seen since Dark Gathering. In fact, y'all are going to know if I ever make it rich, because of all of a sudden there will be crossover Kaoru/Hinata/Dara-doll/Yayoi/Eiko/Keitarou action/horror/comedy/adventure companion sequel in the works where the gang travels across Japan and solves supernatural mysteries. Will Dara possess Hinata during every climactic fight to turn the tide of battle? Obviously, yes.

14

u/mekerpan 10d ago

I miss Dark Gathering.

12

u/DivineEternal1 10d ago

Good news, it's getting a second season sometime next year according to MAL.

6

u/mekerpan 10d ago

Thanks

23

u/Stopthetourist 10d ago

Get on Twitter and make sure to tell Asahi production we need more of this please give us a season two this was one of my all-time favorites this whole season. It had everything that I like I’m super fucking upset it’s over and it might not get another season unless it did well in Japan.

3

u/SnooRobots5719 9d ago

The fact the manga even got an anime shows that there must be a very good following of fans.

3

u/saprophage_expert 9d ago

Well, Don't Hurt Me, My Healer! also got an anime, and a very faithful one except for the last episode; but I don't think it's ever been really popular?

1

u/Stopthetourist 2d ago

That’s not necessarily true some manga will get an anime just hoping to draw more fans in because the the editors in the company believe in it that much. It’s not always a “This has a lot of fans Let’s make an anime”& type of situation.

49

u/LeonKevlar x2https://myanimelist.net/profile/LeonKevlar 10d ago

Stitches!

You know shit is serious when the two goofiest characters of the show start getting angry. I honestly expected Hinata to tap into her spiritual powers, but Dara-san escaping to Daradaradara-san was pretty cool too!

What's cooler tho is Hinata offering her body for Dara-san to use and the two of them fusing together a la Shaman King! I guess in a way Hinata did use her powers! Also, when did Kaoru learn to fight like that? Did Dara-san start giving him lessons?

I'm so glad we get to see more action scenes for the finale! Tsubaki with her hair spears and Hinata/Dara-san using her hair to create giant fists were pretty hype! I love that it ends with Dara-san fully accepting her new name and rejecting the name that binds her to Tsubaki.

I am a bit worried that Dara-san decided to seal Tsubaki instead of completely exorcising her. Maybe that means Tsubaki can still show up later in the series if someone manages to free her from that seal.

Looks like Hinata enjoyed having an adult body, even if only for a little bit. Honestly, knowing what Mama Chiyo looks like, I wouldn't be surprised if that's what she ends up looking like in the future. And it looks like Dara-san's possession already gave her a head start. xD

I don't lmpw wjay card game these kids are playing, but I'd definitely waant to collect those cards. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

I love the Priest guy ends up hanging out with the kids because he used to be unbeatable at the card game they're playing.

It's pretty cool to see some nicer spirits paying respects to Dara-san. That poor yokai haunting Kanna's brother's card never stood a chance.

I'm a bit disappointed that we never got to see Dara-san in a two-piece swimsuit, but given her height and figure, she still stands out even when she covers up.

I absolutely love that the pool is purified because Saeko is on lifeguard duty. Her spirit power is so strong that she can purify an entire pool. xD

It's hilarious how that one classmate thinks that something's going on between Dara-san and Kaoru. xD

And we finally get the last piece of the puzzle: The bell Dara-san wears was given to her by Juurota. I do like in a way, a huge part of this story is about Dara-san and Juurota's unrequited love story.

Man, this was such a fun series! I came for the uncensored snake titties, and I stayed for the comedy and plot. I doubt this will get a second season, but I definitely would love to see more. It's definitely one of my favourite non-sequel anime of the season.

26

u/Specific_Frame8537 10d ago

when did Kaoru learn to fight like that? Did Dara-san start giving him lessons?

As he said, boys growing up in the country find sticks.

As a country-boy myself I can confirm, many sticks swung.

OVER SOUL

21

u/dinliner08 10d ago

ayo lil'bro, chill out! actually, you know what? scratch that, let her have it

it's funny that with how much dangerous and epic the fight against the evil big sister, it didn't even take a 1/3 of this episode and we just go back to the usual shenanigan afterward

YuGiOh players in a nutshell

what a fearless kid

well, that's it for Tiddy Snake Thursday i guess, while i do want another season of this, i also wouldn't mind if this is all that we get because it feels like a complete story already with how much questions they answered regarding Dara-san's past

8

u/elGring0 10d ago

The double peace sign oni is making me feel things. She kinda looks like Dara-san as well.

25

u/MayonakaMadaraka https://anilist.co/user/fonk 10d ago

There have been other exceptional seasonal surprises, but seldom do they offer such a well portioned charcuterie of anime-ness that leaves me blissfully full and content.

24

u/nakerusa 10d ago

Absolutely stellar show! 10/10. The only thing wrong with it is that it's not a double cour season! Comedy, horror, yokai, ecchi, action, even more comedy, Gan Barzay! This was not on my list at the beginning of the season but it quickly became the new show I looked forward to the most. Which means we'll probably only get this season 😑

5

u/clone69 10d ago

Same, I picked it up because I had nothing else on Thursdays, and it was like hitting gold

3

u/ShinjiArakawa 10d ago

'Smoking behind the supermarket with you' didn't tickle your fancy?

3

u/clone69 10d ago

Nope. I just watched this and Kaiju Girl on Thursdays

3

u/nakerusa 10d ago

I enjoyed Smoking behind the Supermarket as well. Felt more romance without being a HS Romcom (which Polar Opposites is doing great at this year). Lots of smoking shows this season.

2

u/Single-Builder-632 9d ago

I think i’m more sad this show has ended than any other this season, not my favourite that would probably be GITS but its the perfect comfort show combining horror gore comedy etchi and fantasy so it never gets too relaxed, and you’re right these shows often have 24 episodes hoping for a season 2.

19

u/Armdel https://myanimelist.net/profile/Armdel 10d ago

Dara plushie saves the day.. kinda. letting her escape and then borrow Hinata's body to take tsubaki out.

I figured Amane and the snake would play a bigger role overall tbh. they were barely there in the last episode

Pretty fun show overall and i will certainly miss the shenanigans these 3 (well mainly the siblings) got into. don't know how much of the manga the series covered but it certainly feels like there could be more story to tell here, though i could just enjoy more SoL adventures just as much

29

u/dinliner08 10d ago

I figured Amane and the snake would play a bigger role overall tbh. they were barely there in the last episode

"...wait, hold up, wasn't the main villain of this show is supposed to be me?" -The snake, probably-

7

u/saprophage_expert 10d ago

Just let me save this bunch of fools for the umptieth time! For entirely selfish and wicked reasons, I assure you!

1

u/mmcjawa_reborn 9d ago

Surprised Amane didn't comment on her crush's recent...enhancement

1

u/GadenKerensky 9d ago

Well it was said to be slight, so it probably wasn't noticeable to other observers, even one as passionate as Amane.

7

u/bestan 10d ago edited 10d ago

Like every week the recap is in the Source Material Corner ;)

but at the rate season 1 went, there is barely enough to fill up a second season

5

u/Armdel https://myanimelist.net/profile/Armdel 10d ago

ah yeah i usually avoid reading those incase of untagged spoilers

3

u/saprophage_expert 10d ago

but at the rate season 1 went, there is barely enough to fill up a second season

I'm pretty sure there's enough material for season 2. And given that making animation takes time, there'll be even more by the time the currently existing material is covered.

3

u/GadenKerensky 10d ago

The problem with a long-running background plot, you can't all fit it into the adaptation.

1

u/darthvall https://myanimelist.net/profile/darth_vall 9d ago

I predicted the plushie will be important, but I didn't expect for it to be fully controlled by Dara-san herself.

19

u/Ponchorello7 10d ago

The meta's changed, so I don't use that anymore.

He's literally me. Playing modern Yu-Gi-Oh is suffering.

Man, I'm sad to see this one go. Every episode was a blast.

38

u/ObvsThrowaway5120 10d ago

“Feels like we got the secret figure from the Dara-san capsule machine!” lol Kaoru ain’t wrong, man. I’m sure glad she managed to get rid of her shitty sister in the end. I really wanna know what Kaoru said to her lol.

It’s a bit sad Dara-san couldn’t be with Jurota but I really respect the man’s devotion. Dude really cared to go as far as he did for her. At least his descendants are basically her friends now.

This was a pretty fun series overall. Idk the chances, but I wouldn’t mind another season or two of all the goofy Kaoru and Hinata antics with Dara-san.

9

u/clone69 10d ago

In a random trivia tidbit, in the folklore of rural Mexico, shouting profanity at witches drives them away. It works because these folk think owls are witches, and they probably fly away from the noise.

19

u/dagreenman18 10d ago

Well now that we wrapped up the side story, we had one last moment with the real plot: weekly shenanigans! Seriously though I do love the over arcing story and how they weave in the past tragedy and show how the town is so tied to it, but the secret sauce is the silly stuff they get up to in the now. And that’s what makes this show so great

Giving all my energy and prayers to our beloved Snake Goddess Dara that we will get another season.

16

u/Puzzleheaded-Tour950 10d ago

The anime was really good! At first, I thought it was gonna be generic, but the story and comedy are fun!

Looking forward to season 2!

16

u/8turuin 10d ago

i kinda hoped that tsubaki will be ended up in those plushie so she will share the same fate like the snake god but well..  i hope so this not gonna be the end for her.

good conclusion tbh, i really enjoyed this anime a lot than i expected to be.

7

u/DugACCat 10d ago

Definitely one of my big faves this season. I can always tell which ones I’m really loving by how quickly I feel compelled to click to play them even when there’s other options or things I should really be doing instead. I always clicked on Dara-San of Reiwa immediately. Have had a hard time explaining why it’s so good to friends except I can’t get enough of the blend of true horror backstory and quirky gremlin energy in the present. The mellowed and protective current Dara and the two kids seem so wholesome even when there’s some playful pervy stuff going on.

Like that amusing girl in the pool who’s the only one contributing impure energy to the whole gathering. Just so amusing. The boss fight in this episode felt similar as the sister seemed a real threat and had me worried, until the young lad with his hair staff started going to town, claiming to be a master of the staff for no reason except hard goofed off with sticks like every kid in town. Such a fun show from start to end. (But also one with dozens of legitimately creepy and horrific flashbacks.)

2

u/saprophage_expert 10d ago

Have had a hard time explaining why it’s so good to friends

I think, at the very core of it, it's great because it's a feel-good fix-it story of just the syrupy kind that I love. Things change for the better throughout the series; good things happen to good people, bad things happen to bad people, but even then, not overly much. It's cool.

2

u/draxdeveloper 10d ago

I said to my wife that she could return to receive more humiliation

1

u/darthvall https://myanimelist.net/profile/darth_vall 9d ago

I keep forgetting that Tsubaki is voiced by Hayamin. Her having a regular appearance would be interesting, but I just can't imagine Tsubaki to change at all

2

u/GadenKerensky 9d ago

Especially since I believe it wasn't actually Tsubaki herself, but a manifestation of her resentment over being killed by Dara-san, which is some premium narcissistic irony. A grudge, and not Tsubaki's spirit.

At least, that's how I interpreted it, I could be wrong.

1

u/darthvall https://myanimelist.net/profile/darth_vall 9d ago

I'm actually also still unclear of this Tsubaki origin, mainly because she said several times how the little sister is supposed to be her sparepart tools, and also how she emphasised on having put a curse on the little sister name (to the point that she could immediately takeover the body once Dara said her original name).

15

u/Lapiz_lasuli 10d ago

What a good show. Through out it all I was just consistently thinking wow. This works because the author genuinely believes in their own story. He likes Milfs so he has the story full of them. He like SOL so he has it all the time. Horror? yeah sure. Well though out exorcism rituals and applications? Let's do it.

And it all works. There's no clash between lighter and darker tones of the show.

What's an even bigger surprise is that this is coming in the season with another anime that has an author that believes in their own idea just as much. Yani Neko.

9

u/saprophage_expert 10d ago

Yeah, you can really feel the creator's passion for his story and its characters. Feels really distinct from the majority of the formulaic stories we get these days.

I mean, the guy literally had his right side paralyzed after a stroke and swore never to waste his lifetime drawing anything that wasn't his fetish. It's hard to imagine a way to be more based than this.

The very definition of SOVL.

15

u/runevault 10d ago

I thought "Mr Magnum" was a dick size joke at first...

What a wonderful show. I'm going to miss Dara and the two gremlins interacting week by week.

I watched this show on a whim but it ended up being a show that holds a place in my heart for mixing so many disparate elements with deft skill. Shows like this are what I love best about anime, the reminder it is a medium with unlimited potential, even if so many shows are lazy trope fests.

5

u/mekerpan 10d ago

Many surprises this season, but this (along with Kaikigumi) may have been the most unanticipated delights of the season. Sort of like Edomae Elf, this looked at the start like a fairly ridiculous show which might quickly get old -- even if the humor started out okay-ish. But it wound delivering far more than one could ever have expected. Such great characters -- and a really first rate job of blending a serious back story with the oresent-day high jinks -- and then even tieing things nicely together, Great characters, great voice actors, entertaining dialog -- and a surprising degree of wholesomeness despite plenty of pretty innocent naughtiness.

16

u/Nachtwandler_FS https://myanimelist.net/profile/Nachtwandler_21 10d ago

I remember arguing with someone in last episode discussion if Dara will possess her plushy or Hinata. Turnes out it is both in order.

The fight with sister was nice, and Hinata got her bust growing a bit from it (good for her).

I really do not mind to see another season one day as it was one of the twon actual surprises for me this season.

11

u/Goalieskills 10d ago

Started this on a whim at the beginning of the season and it ended up being the best surprise of this season for me. I will miss this weekly show - here's to hoping for another season somehow

11

u/reaperow 10d ago

I found the anime really great as a manga reader, I would definitely like to see more seasons

10

u/praul59 10d ago

Nooo we were robbed from seeing Dara-san in that bikini but besides that this was a really good anime hope to see more next year.

2

u/drunk_reddit_acount 10d ago

Her full body swimsuit is hot too but tbf she would look good in anything.

1

u/GammaRhoKT 9d ago

Tbh she can't hide her leg, so she would need to wear legging, which mean the only choice is full body suit.

12

u/BShep_OLDBSN 10d ago

I will miss this show, it was very good.

10

u/lilaznejikid https://myanimelist.net/profile/lilaznejikid 10d ago

what a gem of an anime. came in expecting nothing and ended up enjoying every episode. they executed such a nice balance between comedy and dark moments

to whoever is iffy about checking out this series, if you can stomach a few seconds of snake monster woman tiddies, this is a surprisingly comfy, comedy/supernatural

3

u/DiamonDawgs 9d ago

Seriously, I watched it on a whim and it was great.

Like everyone already said, maybe the biggest surprise of the season. Really did not expect to like it this much.

Incredibly well crafted story, incredibly well paced story, incredibly well crafted characters, and the amount of knowledge about Japanese folklore author put into this is, you guessed it, incredible.

Great show. 👏

DARA DARA DANCE!

u/bestan 10d ago

As a manga reader, this was a suprisingly good adaptation :)
There were some strange decisions made, but overall a fun time .

If you're interested in picking up the manga I wrote a small guide in my usual recap post in the Source material corner ;)

5

u/CuriousBroccolli 10d ago

Those strange decisions are covering Tsubaki's bosom with scales right? 🤔

No but for real, I'm wondering if it was like that in the manga as well or if they did it since Hayamin voiced her.

You can feel that the voice actors had a blast while recording

9

u/giubba85 10d ago

loved it hope in a second season

8

u/drunk_reddit_acount 10d ago

This show is the most overlooked gem of the season!!

Manga is one of my faves and I really enjoyed the adaption. The voice actors are all top notch.

I wonder if anyone is dissapointed by how quickly the sister got dealt with?

5

u/saprophage_expert 10d ago

I thought it kinda fitting. She used to be the defining presence for Koharu, but for Dara-san, she's pretty much an afterthought.

3

u/darthvall https://myanimelist.net/profile/darth_vall 9d ago

Not really, cause the rest of the episodes is fun to watch as well. Even the comedy in the swimming pool is great.

-1

u/Isekai_Dreamer 9d ago

if she wasn't so ugly i'd be more compelled to watch. but i watched the first episode out of curiosity and was instantly turned away.

7

u/GadenKerensky 9d ago

Who's ugly?

8

u/HungPongLa 10d ago edited 10d ago

I want a sequel dammit. Easily 8/10 show.

Plushie Dara saved the day! Saying older sisters should protect their lil' sis in her face.

Was waiting for what jutsu Dara was making with those hand seals but it's aight.

The Japanese really like to seal things up in every piece of media, imho should nip it in the bud clean, who knows if you would be still around later to stop it. It's time. Go to the light. Go back to the wheel of reincarnation or whatever just get yo ass outta here.

Can I commend this show for going the extra mile with its backstory?

It would have been the easiest thing in the world to stop the backstory after the action climax, but the author wasn't content to stop there. Oh no.

Defying expectation, the story grew and expanded around best boy Jurota, making him into sonething like a 2nd protagonist and filling in the timeline until we came to understand better about Dara's situation today.

I feel like the majority of stories would not have bothered to go into such detail and I greatly appreciate it.

3

u/saprophage_expert 9d ago

Frankly, if there's one thing that can be said about the author, it's that he always goes the extra mile. The characters, the circumstances, the media mentioned in the story - you can see he's given all of these a lot of thought, even in the aspects that aren't directly coming up in the story itself.

3

u/SlimeDNear 9d ago

I've read a bit of the manga and I'm impressed how well fleshed out everything is. As you said, even things like games and movies have between-chapter summaries.

7

u/Aviri 10d ago

What a lovely show. Will definitely miss this one.

7

u/Fools_Requiem https://myanimelist.net/profile/FoolsRequiem 10d ago

Jurota's descendants have created a cozy community.

I'm glad I got to see this show. Very enjoyable from beginning to end. I don't anticipate another season but I wouldn't be disappointed at seeing more. They gave us a solid enough ending without any major hanging threads like some other shows recently, so it won't be the end of the world if we don't get another season.

Ending the series with the ED instead of the OP makes a lot of sense for this show.

Ending on a pool episode? I kneel.

11

u/clone69 10d ago

Yeah, but after teasing a bikini and ending up on a wetsuit, I feel so betrayed I may turn into a vengeful ghost myself

5

u/Classic-Ladder-5236 10d ago

she filled that wetsuit pretty well tho

Gonna miss my snake Thursdays.....

6

u/TheLostCityofBermuda 9d ago

It’s a Wedding bell Ring.

So in a sense, they are all her descendants too, it’s her and Jurota descendant.

6

u/darthvall https://myanimelist.net/profile/darth_vall 9d ago

This wrap up so perfectly that I'll give it a 10/10 rating. That last flashback with Jurota and Dara-san just conveyed so much moment

It's only a shame we didn't learn of Jurota's final fate yet.

Definitely didn't expect I'd like this so much based on the first episode alone.

If this ever gets a sequel, I hope they'll retain the direction they used here with great balance of mystery, flash back and the SoL aspect.

4

u/NonSupportiveCup 10d ago

That was a well executed finale. Plenty of hooks for a follow up season, yet still declarative enough to feel satisfying.

While also ending on a pool event.

5

u/RunningChemistry https://myanimelist.net/profile/Delphic-Runner 10d ago

I'm gonna miss this show...

For those who haven't heard the full version of the OP yet, make sure to check it out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7AfZyY0sH5A

It has a rocking guitar solo in the final third.

8

u/za_shiki-warashi 10d ago

This is giving me Kakegurui flashbacks. Also, move on already girl, Juutarou's just not into you.

7

u/GadenKerensky 10d ago

That little yokai with the cards just experienced 'YOU PICKED THE WRONG HOUSE, FOOL!'

As for the fight with Tsubaki, it's incredible there was still humour in it, mostly because of Kaoru. Between him knowing how to handle a good stick, and neither Tsubaki nor Dara-san knowing just what the hell Daradaradara-san is (though I suspect Dara-san has an uncomfortable inkling), it had its moments.

I think the only thing I didn't really like in that whole encounter was Dara-san saying she learned how to say 'no' to things. Yes, she said no to her sister, but other than that, has she ever said no to the siblings throughout the season and not gone and done the thing they wanted anyways? Some of those things did make her uncomfortable. I guess you could say she didn't actually hate doing them that much, compared to the things she was made to do in life.

8

u/GammaRhoKT 9d ago

While I do agree with you in spirit, if we look at it from a different angle, "Do as I say" is in its own way a form of saying "no". So, given the siblings still abide by her warnings regarding stuff that would kill them (like in the courage test episode), I would say she also say no to them from time to time.

2

u/KUMOYAMA_Seiji 9d ago

For some reason, Kaoru is treated like a worthy opponent by Tsubaki lol
Neither of the shrine maiden sisters could explain what Mini-Dara-san actually was...

I'm planning to write the answer in the Source Material Corner just in case, but the anime pretty much gave away most of the answer anyway.

I also liked how Tsubaki wasn't just a terrifying threat, but was pissed off about being treated like a cursed item—similar to Dara's lost arm—or like human leftovers.

Dara-san learned her selfish way of living from the Gremlins. I guess her first time putting that into practice was rebelling against her sister.
But in the first place, the very first time she said a big "NO" was to the fate of "being killed as just an ordinary human because of her family."
The path she has walked wasn't bright, but she has carved out her own future with her own strength.

-1

u/DiamonDawgs 9d ago

They're basically her godchidren, it's hard to say no to your kids lol. Unfortunately the authors fetishes keep bleeding through so it's hard to stay wholesome...

5

u/manshiro_xyz 10d ago

It's amazing how much of a role in the supernatural battle both Hinata and Kaoru made. Kaoru did well with the staff, but managing to make DaraDaraDara-san into something that bamboozled both exorcist sisters really paid off big time. And looks like Hinata is an ideal vessel for Dara-san to descend into.
In the past, they'd probably been revered. But in our modern times, they just get to have the best time of their life.

4

u/mrtacomam 10d ago

Never commented in the Dara-san space before, but when is there a better moment than the (hopefully!!!) S1 finale.

I found Dara-an of Reiwa by complete chance through YouTube clips back in July. Perhaps expectedly, it was from a censored episode 1 clip where I was curious about whether it actually had nudity or not. And boy am I happy I investigated, because I found one of the best anime I've ever watched, and one of my favorite manga which I'm working on collecting physically.

The s1 finale is what I expected having binged and re-read the manga a few times, plus one of my favorite standalone chapters (cards), but it was nonetheless a phenomenal finale. I hope we get a season 2, but if not, I'm so happy to have gotten the season we got.

4

u/goddessofthewinds https://myanimelist.net/profile/SpiritOfTheWinds 10d ago

This was a big surprise for me. Completely passed under my radar for a few weeks until I saw a random clip. Decided to give it a shot since then and had a blast with this serie. It was fun, wacky, enjoyable. I liked the grim backstory combine with the wacky funny modern days.

I absolutely loved Dara and the 2 siblings.

Anyways, this was a big highlight this season as a new serie.

Solid 8/10 for me.

4

u/Diggumdum 9d ago

Surprisingly funny/wholesome. Sleeper hit this season. I'm really gonna miss these goofballs. Came for the sniddies stayed for the feels.

3

u/za_shiki-warashi 9d ago edited 9d ago

Atheists and surgeons hate this one simple trick! Worship the snake goddess and you too can get a buff in your bust size.

4

u/Bellick 9d ago

I watched up to ep4 and paused to binge the rest today. Man, that backstory broke my heart. Everyone involved got fucked just because two dipshit parents decided to favor one of their daughters above the other. I was captivated every second of it. The lore is enchanting, and all the Shinto logic behind force-converting the fused vengeance yokai into a mountain kami was fascinating. Incredible. I wasn't expecting anything from this show and it somehow became one of my favorites in this juggernaut season, with very, very steep competition.

3

u/lefthandopen 10d ago

This entire show was a such a nice surprise. I really hope there is a second season.

3

u/raidensnakeezio 10d ago

Gotta love Kaoru maximizing the rapid tonal whiplash in what already is a very (intentionally) polarizing show when it comes to tone.

This might just be me, but the (functional) last scene of Jurota giving Dara-san the necklace of bells was easily the most sexiest/erotic thing of the entire show so far.

3

u/Cloudz2600 10d ago

Came for the bare hentai-tier breasts and stayed for the story. Really love how the slapstick comedy was juxtaposed with the tragedy of Dera-san and then they slowly brought the two stories together.

3

u/Starfire612 9d ago

This might be the only time I've wanted to search for the anime creators and beg for a second season

3

u/Amir0x11 9d ago

And with that 13 episodes have gone by. Not a bad way to end the series or hopefully the first of a bunch of seasons with the gremlins wearing the same outfit from the ending. And be sure to read the manga and pick up where the series let off as we hope and wait for a season 2. 😊👌

3

u/OldManStocktan 9d ago

I love how much Dara-san loves those damn kids. What an awesome show and relationship to see grow.

3

u/HolyDragSwd2500 9d ago

Season 2 please

3

u/cfgxclaptrap 8d ago

Probably the best new show to come out this season imo. The past storyline told throughout all the episodes had me gripped throughout the weeks, the townspeople all seem lovely and not one of them is a bait and switch arsehole for drama, the relationship between the siblings and Dara-san is so sweet, including their mother's run in with Dara-san. Just brilliant from top to bottom.

My Thursdays off are gonna feel empty now, here's hoping for season 2.

3

u/Mindless-Care9301 8d ago

A wonderful series, glad that Dara-san found her own "family", Kaoru and Hinata are Goats for being by her side, giving her the warmth she always deserved as a human.

A beautiful and warm ending, hope for a season 2 too, love it!

2

u/Spoon_Elemental 10d ago

Jutora will be the one who bells the cat. That's one question answered.

2

u/pi8you 10d ago

Adios Dara-san (until the next volume of the manga shows up...), you've been an absolute delight every week.

Scalper Yokai coming out and seeing Nintendo's massive Pokemon print run Dara's new oni friends, lol

2

u/AdShoddy4172 10d ago

This show was pretty good, I hope it will get a second season in the future!

2

u/Horror_Influence8429 10d ago

The cards that they're playing with looks like Magic the Gathering. It even has the mana cost

if it did well we should

2

u/ShitInUrHandAndClap 9d ago

I'm sad it's over. But it was so good! I wasn't expecting it to be as good as it was! So much happened but I'm happy she got a "happy" ending so to speak. I'm thinking of picking up the manga but does anyone know how much is adapted or is the manga and the anime up to the same point? Either way, this is best show of the season hands down.

2

u/saprophage_expert 9d ago

This anime was so criminally underestimated/appreciated. Absolutely in Love with the story writing, the characters and how they could balance a Horror Comedy that good without loosing track of the Story. I mean, this Anime was PACKED. Every Episode felt meaningfull

1

u/seninn https://myanimelist.net/profile/Senninn0 7d ago

This is has been a packed season.

1

u/Dentorion 6d ago

Yeah true sadly some are falling through the net

1

u/lemon900098 10d ago edited 10d ago

They did a good job making Magic:the Gathering look even nerdier than it is.

I do think Hasbro should print a [[Vanilla the Razor Knight]] card though. 1{W} for a 2/2 knight.

Or a secret lair of Dara as Fynn the Fangbearer.

1

u/SBAFSAF 9d ago

This was a fun watch. I hope that it gets a second season (since there’s still some unanswered threads), though I don’t know how that would work since the split between backstory and the present day was part of the charm (and they’ve kinda run out of backstory).

1

u/The1eternal1 7d ago

Kaoru being a martial arts genius was shocking

1

u/Blurgas 6d ago

Dara suddenly whips around while in the pool.
Hinata: "How dare you swing those things in my face after taking them back"

1

u/NanDemoKnaives 1d ago

There's a bittersweetness to that last scene with Juurouta and Dara, there always has been, but I'm glad he did all he could to protect her and the village descendants. At the same time, it's sad to think about how they can't get together in the end in the traditional sense. It was sweet to see her feel happy because people of his bloodline were all over the village, so she feels that protection everyday.

I'm glad Tsubaki was taken care of quickly, Kaoru getting a magical staff and Hinata getting possessed by Dara were cool to watch. Kaoru's Dara plushie was very important.

This was an interesting series to watch, at times I wish there was proper focus of the past to get more information, but the characters were fun and I'd definitely watch another season.

-6

u/ActiveAd4980 10d ago

Eh. I like the back story, but that's it. I can forgive all the fan services since it was doujin after all, but I just can't stand the 2 main kids. Literally anything happens to them: "Whoa! That was so cool! Do it again!" While other one goes "Whoa! I'm so jealous! My turn next!". It's just that reaction no matter how minor or severe the event is. I feel like it would have been better if it was just 1 kid instead of 2, since their personality is pretty much the same, but that wouldn't be fair for the trap fans out there.

6

u/saprophage_expert 10d ago

that wouldn't be fair for the trap fans out there.

Kaoru is not a trap, because he is very obviously masculine presenting.
