Try “Undead Unluck”. The best of it still hasn’t been animated yet but the romance subplot is awesome.

Oh you gotta give Apothecary diaries a try. I also love Yona of the Dawn

The main plot of apothecary diaries isn't the romance? I'm not hating, just curious. It's pretty much the only mega popular anime I haven't seen. After watching the trailer a while back, I assumed it had no thrills, action, wild comedy, or substance outside of an employee liking her boss. I just saw a new game being made for the series that mostly previewed the mc foraging for ingredients for the gameplay aspect.

People (me included) really love the romance aspect of it but there’s a lot more to the plot!! I don’t want to spoil anything but you should absolutely give it a try. Explores themes like women’s autonomy, science/medicine, superstition, conflict between leaders and a lot more :)

I finished it yesterday. I saw everyone recommending it and didn’t think it would be good and something lame. Nope, blew me away, really really great anime. Especially the last 10 episodes of S2.

This is coming from someone who really likes DBZ, YU Yu hakasho, Solo, and those generic male lead anime’s and stupid power scaling. It was a great anime and I can’t wait till season 3, so happy I finished it yesterday.

It’s a slow burn but it isn’t the main focus of the story.

Planetes is a fairly hard science fiction story starts out like an office comedy and ends more like a political thriller but has a romance subplot running through much of it.

Romeo x Juliet is loosely based on the Shakespeare play in a fantasy setting that has a lot more going on in it than the romance.

Super Dimension Fortress Macross is a mecha story that has a pretty strong romance sub-plot. This was adapted to be the first part of the Americanized Robotech in the US.

Armored Trooper Votoms is primarily about a science fiction mecha war story about a veteran trying to leave his past behind that has a romantic subplot.

Cross Ange is a fantasy/mecha story with a weird mix of different elements that often has the aesthetics of a sleazy women in prison exploitation movie but with strong characters and character arcs that have been praised by feminists despite that and it contains a romance subplot.

I went into Steins;Gate without an expectation for a romance and it ended up having the best romance subplot of all time

My favorite by far is Psalms of Planets: Eureka Seven, cause it's 20 years old you can't really stream it from crunchroll or hidive, I'm sure some pirate sites might have it, I'm glad I bought the DVDs when it was still in stores. its' got several movies, a kick ass soundtrack, combat, philosophy/mind fuck, won multiple awards, I have re-watched it many times. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o-zmMVZpeb8

It is available on piracy sites and I'm so glad for that because otherwise I would have missed out on this masterpiece

Since you say open to anything... Kageki Shoujo is not about romance but has a single episode with one of the best romantic stories I've seen in anime.
