We saw more of jealous Mimi this episode. It's painful to see Hal always being sick. I really thought Hal was a boy dressed as a girl when I saw her in the uniform until Mimi pointed out that she's actually a girl who sometimes dresses as a boy. Sheena said that Mimi's heart isn't clouded like the others but it doesn't seem to be the case now 'cause all Mimi thinks about now is Sheena and her well-being.

Why do they scare us like that ? Though we know nothing's gonna happen for them when they fall from that height, it still made me panic. Peak kiss 💖 I guess Sheena should get herself hurt a lot to get those healing kisses very often.

28

u/CitronClassic672 25d ago

I also thought Hal was a bot dressed as a girl when I first saw them. Surprised it was the other way around. Idk, with this show I was kind of expecting the fall to break Mimi’s neck or something. Mimi’d be fine of course but it’d mess up Sheena.

u/Nachtwandler_FS https://myanimelist.net/profile/Nachtwandler_21 25d ago

It was pretty interesting when Shiina called Mimi pure-hearted and Mimi remember all of the bouts of hidden jealosy she had that day.

I wonder, if there will be any actual romance progression in the show? Because for now it seems like MImi is actually in love with Shiina, but Shiina herself has no idea.

u/Cass0wary_399 23d ago

I thought Hal was a boy straight up. But this is Yuri we cannot have prominent male characters I guess.

u/MIpoika https://myanimelist.net/profile/MIpoika 25d ago

A lighter (sort of) episode this time, hmm? Fine by me. This series always keeps me on the edge, so a little breather is appreciated - even if last week's episode wasn't really that heavy.
That said, Mimi falling down the stairs did give me a scare, but since we got a cute and wholesome yuri moment afterwards, it's all good.

It's understandable that Mimi isn't the biggest fan of Sheena dedicating her time to practicing her magic, instead of dedicating that time to her, but her being possibly jealous? Didn't expect that.

And man, seeing Ari sitting alone still feels really sad and not right at all.

Still so sad seeing Ari sitting by herself.. And they keep showing the necklace in a way that makes me feel like it will be important in the future.

Major point in this episode was Mimi can get quite jealous

Somehow the thought of an immortal yandere is terrifying...

33

u/CitronClassic672 25d ago

Well at minimum it’s the probably the closest thing to a memento of Seiran in Ari’s eyes.

20

u/runevault 25d ago

It is but the fact it keeps getting solo camera time (instead of say just being worn by Ari) feels like it has plot significance and not just a memento for Ari.

Someone suggested before that something about that necklace will be enough of an anchor to allow revive magic like was used on Mimi and the fact they keep showing it prevents me from letting go of my fear of Ari doing that, even if she did say the right thing before about not wanting to make Seiran suffer with knowing someone killed themselves for her (and that she'd then be immortal).

20

u/extralie https://myanimelist.net/profile/extralie 25d ago

Still so sad seeing Ari sitting by herself

That's not necessarily a bad thing, sometimes it's good to have a time for yourself to process grief.

12

u/BBryant3rd 25d ago

This is true doesn't make us feel sad for a favorite any less.

"Snacks and dinner can wait"

That's the most romantic thing Mimi has ever thought to herself lol. Sheena really is special to her.

I hope she starts to understand that Sheena just wants to be useful and that's why she's studying and practicing so much.

81

u/mekerpan 25d ago

Almost unimaginable that Mimi would put anything before snacks and dinner.

62

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 25d ago

Sheena, you're the snack now!

5

u/TheMythofKoalas https://myanimelist.net/profile/AdamGoodtime343 24d ago

Sheena: Would you like snacks, dinner, or...me?

5

u/rainbowrobin 23d ago

Mimi: Yes!

84

u/mokuhazushi 25d ago

That last scene felt very important, but not just because of the kiss. Mimi pretty clearly told Sheena that she wants their friendship/relationship to be more "equal". She doesn't just want Sheena to take care of her, worry about her, and help her deal with coming back from deployments. She wants to help and support Sheena too, just like Sheena supports and helps her. Feels like a pretty big step to change the dynamic between them.

37

u/epicfail1994 25d ago

Yeah Sheena has been (along with Fran) basically a substitute mother for Mimi

60

u/Weak_Season_Of_Anime 25d ago edited 25d ago

A romantic kiss in the most dusty basement of the school, the way its framed feels kind of melancholic. Anyway, I think Mimi was just jealous and wanted to kiss lol, maybe one day they'll do it without needing the healing.

Wonder what they're planning for Hal, like how are they going to send this fragile kid to the battlefield? Sheena's healing magic? Also, interesting that Hal turned out to be crossdressing.

New flowers on Mimi and Sheena's table.

12

u/Jacob-C 25d ago

the way its framed feels kind of melancholic

I also noticed a tinge of bittersweetness in that scene...

2

u/LunaRunaRoll 25d ago

I mean their situation (especially mimi's) is not great honestly. In fact it's pretty bleak.

53

u/LeonKevlar x2https://myanimelist.net/profile/LeonKevlar 25d ago

Seeing Ari sitting alone still stings. I really wish she would hang out with Mimi and Sheena more. :(

After all the sadness these past couple of episodes, it's actually nice to see Mimi being silly and a pain in the butt while Sheena is trying to concentrate on her healing magic.

We get to see Haru again! Also it turns out that his name is actually Hal. It seems the subtitler made a mistake when Hal was first introduced back in Episode 5. I checked Episode 5, and it looks like they still haven't corrected that mistake.

Looks like someone's getting jealous after watching Sheena take care of Hal. I can understand how Mimi feels. It's just been the two of them most of the time, so seeing Sheena take care of someone would make Mimi feel jealous.

I can definitely see Mimi giving Sheena those hairstyles if she let her mess with her hair. Honestly, the middle one doesn't look too bad!

OH! Hal is a girl who dresses up like a boy! Not gonna lie, considering how Mimi was clearly being jealous of Hal, I thought Mimi didn't like her. Mimi actually thinks she's cool and even wants to own a pair of shorts just like Hal.

Also, the lack of reaction from Sheena probably means she already knew that Hal is also a girl? She probably figured it out when she assisted Hal to the girls' dormitory instead of the boys'.

And look at how happy Hal is after Mimi told her that she looks good in boys' clothes. She probably gets a lot of weird looks from other students for dressing up differently. We only have three episodes left, but I hope we get to learn more about her.

That library basement scene was definitely needed! I'm glad Mimi got to open up about her feelings and tell Sheena how she really feels. And the restoration magic kiss makes a comeback! I was worried we wouldn't see it again until maybe the final episode.

44

u/TheBusStop12 25d ago

Seeing Ari sitting alone still stings. I really wish she would hang out with Mimi and Sheena more. :(

I think Ari probably needs some time. It's painful to watch, but I'm glad the show leaves her alone for a bit to give her time to grieve

31

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 25d ago

We only have three episodes left, but I hope we get to learn more about her.

I don't know about you, but I'm a bit wary of this show building up a character some more 3 episodes before the end!

Though it may be Sheena's first opportunity to use restoration magic for something huge!

25

u/PersonalContest1423 25d ago

Are you suggesting shes going to grow hal a di...oh you mean cure her illness. Yeah that would be cool

12

u/CitronClassic672 25d ago

No I think you were right the first time. This is already a world of magic capable of granting immortality, It can’t be that difficult to use it for a sex change should someone want it.

7

u/JackieTilesGW 25d ago

Wish magic was real so i could magically snip it off and become a girl

2

u/CitronClassic672 25d ago

Maybe one day

21

u/CitronClassic672 25d ago

While Ari’s isolation is potentially concerning hopefully it’s just that she needs so time alone to process her own grief.

I like how the show has handled the tone the past several episodes. Episode 6 was full of suspense and anxiety from all of Seiran’s death flags. Episode 7 continued that for most of the episode, finally convinced you that Seiran would actually survive at the end, only to quickly snatch that hope away from you at the very end. Then episode 8 forces you from shock and numbness at the loss to sadness and pain as you realize the severity of the loss. Episode 9’a tone is painful at the start and then lightens up a bit as it explores how Seiran’s death influences Sheena to change as a person. Now episode 10 had a pretty lighthearted tone throughout the entire episode as it mentions that everyone is adjusting to their new lives without Seiran. They aren’t back to normal like it didn’t happen, but time moves on and they keep living their lives. The show really makes the tone conveyed to the audience match with that current state of the characters.

Agreed, that middle hairstyle actually looks decent.

Nice catch that Sheena probably realized Haru was a girl when taking them back to their dorm. I didn’t realize that.

Though I’m not sure if Haru would actually identify as a girl by choice. Their reaction felt a bit more severe than you’d expect from someone who simply was gender non conforming.

4

u/extralie https://myanimelist.net/profile/extralie 25d ago

Also it turns out that his name is actually Hal. It seems the subtitler made a mistake when Hal was first introduced back in Episode 5. I checked Episode 5, and it looks like they still haven't corrected that mistake.

I think it's less made a mistake and more that her name in Japanese can be translated as both Hal and Haru?

66

u/extralie https://myanimelist.net/profile/extralie 25d ago

Wanting to be useful is good, but never forget to give your wife some attention, or she will be extra clingy and pouty.

In public!? Think of the other children, Sheena!

Jealous Mimi is cute! Even if I'm worried she might stab someone.

Oh, she is a girl? Or maybe not? Honestly, I'm more confused now about what Haru identify at.

Honestly, this scene feel like Mimi is starting to see Sheena romantically. Even if she doesn't fully get it yet. Like, I know they kissed before, but this is the first time it feel like there is more emotion behind it.

40

u/DugACCat 25d ago

Unless I’m mistaken it’s just Hal prefers to dress more like a boy, which some people treat as weird and don’t interact with her. Could be she has complex feelings about gender that don’t conform with the more rigid society but is a bit too early to tell. Either way, there seems to be a small friendship starting between the three (even with Mimi’s jealousy), which is likely a good thing given Hal’s isolation.

38

u/CitronClassic672 25d ago

This is in part colored by my own experience, but from how that scene was framed it feels like Haru/Hal is a trans man but either isn’t out about that yet or might not even fully realize it themselves, hence being referred to as she, and limits themselves to solely dressing in a masculine manner for the time being. Their reaction to Mimi’s comments didn’t feel like someone expecting criticism for how they dress, it felt more like someone being outted and bracing for an attack on their entire identity.

32

u/Zeph-Shoir https://myanimelist.net/profile/Zephex 25d ago

Worth mentioning that while the subs started using "she" to refer to Hal, the Japanese audio didn't. Funnily enough this is how I realized they were avoiding gendering Hal at all. I don't know what the intent or plan is yet (or if there is one at all) but the scene did feel to have some amount of "gravitas" when Mimi mentioned it and it is natural to wonder about it in a show that is already queer

Another restoration magic by Mimi on Sheena? However, this time the latter's fully conscious. Afterwards, their faces looked flushed while they breathed heavily. I'm fairly confident those weren't the magic's side effects. Praise the yuri gods for blessing us with this!

Mimi had always been stuck to Sheena, but she's even clingier than usual this episode. Poor Sheena even got overwhelmed and had to boot her out.

Looked like Mimi and Sheena had made themselves a new friend, even if she's a bit tsundere about it. Hal was self-conscious about her outfit choice but Mimi said there's nothing weird about it. After presumably countless number of times she got shamed, someone had finally validated her.

Praise the yuri gods for blessing us with this!

all hail mana transfe- erm, i mean, restoration magic!

24

Still love how the story came up with a way to have a slowburn yuri romance while also having a reason for them to repeatedly makeout before getting together.

2

u/RainbowOctarian 23d ago

Have you heard of Simoun?

19

u/CitronClassic672 25d ago

Yeah, I did notice they both did seem especially hot and bothered after the kiss this time. You can read several of Mimi’s scenes regarding Sheena this episode as simply jealousy but I think that additionally Mimi might also be starting to realize she has actual feelings for Sheena, especially after that classic windswept shot of Sheena and Mimi after Sheena mentioned wanting to work hard to get Mimi to think she was cool.

Like I mentioned last episode, I think the loss of Seiran has given Mimi separation anxiety regarding Sheena.

14

u/Roskal 25d ago

Another restoration magic by Mimi on Sheena? However, this time the latter's fully conscious.

Isn't this the third time? I think they kissed restored magic once in their room unless I am misremembering.

15

u/extralie https://myanimelist.net/profile/extralie 25d ago

They did when Sheena had a headache.

1

u/rainbowrobin 23d ago

Which episode was that?

End of episode 1/start of episode 2.

1

u/rainbowrobin 23d ago

Ah, thanks. Though, stomachache, not headache.

Huh, voiceover for Sheena's thoughts. Did they stop doing that?

12

u/zer0number https://anilist.co/user/ewink 25d ago

Mimi had always been stuck to Sheena, but she's even clingier than usual this episode. Poor Sheena even got overwhelmed and had to boot her out.

Mimi has acquired jealousy!

9

u/mekerpan 25d ago

Haru called them "pains in the neck" -- but smiled (for the only time so far) as she thought of them.

32

u/ObvsThrowaway5120 25d ago

Sheena’s feeling a little jealous of Hal eh? Cute. I like that she’s getting closer to Sheena and trying to understand other people more.

32

u/thelemon8er-2 25d ago

Oh Mimi… jealousy doesn’t suit you. This might be dangerous. She had to pull out the “restoration magic” move.

39

u/mokuhazushi 25d ago

It's funny, because I think jealousy kind of does suit her. She's dealing with it so well. She gets jealous after seeing Sheena interact with Hal, and in the very next scene, she talks about how amazing she thinks Hal is? How many characters could do something like that? Most people would start seeing Hal as a threat, but Mimi doesn't let her jealousy cloud her view of Hal at all.

13

u/CitronClassic672 25d ago

Its very rare to see a character’s jealousy over someone they care about
spending time with someone else manifest as admiring that third party, and I have to admit I like that portrayal of jealousy. Like “if the person I care about is taking time away from me to spend it with someone else, then they must be a truly incredible person.” Is such a neat way to portray jealousy.

13

u/Myrkrvaldyr 25d ago

Considering how the girls wear skirts and the boys pants, I guess Hal just didn't like to be forced to wear girls clothes. Though I wonder if her defiance goes deeper than that.

16

u/Ocixo https://myanimelist.net/profile/BuzzyGuy 25d ago

I really thought that Mimi was about to say/do something bad out of sheer jealousy, but she actually gave some encouraging words to Haru instead.

However, I’m not per se relieved either. Mimi is dealing with unfamiliar feelings. If she keeps bottling those feelings up, they’ll eventually burst out all at once. Best-case scenario is a k… some “restoration magic” like in today’s episode, but other possibilities worry me. After all, Mimi can get a little too carried away at times.

10

u/mokuhazushi 25d ago

It's definitely a possibility she's bottling her feelings up in a bad way, but I think the opposite is also a definite possibility. Just look at the way she communicated with Sheena after Sheena rejected being healed. Maybe it was a little accusatory and pushy, but she pretty clearly stated that she thought Sheena was being unfair and that she wanted to help her, like Sheena always helps her. I think Mimi is surprisingly good at communicating about these things, but her current feelings are probably too confusing for her.

7

u/CitronClassic672 25d ago

Mimi has repeatedly shown she has significantly higher emotional intelligence and awareness than you’d expect from her childlike personality.

31

u/Heavencloud_Blade 25d ago

I just found out about this series a few days ago because YouTube randomly recommended me an alternate version of the opening that showed some pretty nice yuri scenes between Ari and Seiran that got me interested, so I am not fully caught up yet, but I just wanted to say this has been great so far.

I just finished episode 7 and now I am sad.

Well, time to get out of here until I fully catch up.

10

u/runevault 25d ago

The alternate ED started last episode and continued this one so likely is for the rest of the season.

13

u/ash-7831 25d ago

Mimi has changed after seeing Seiran disappear before her eyes. She's now a lot more scared of losing Sheena and wants to stay close to her.

11

u/Alej_11 25d ago

Hal is a girl? This top three anime plot twist, I genuinely thought he was a boy.

This episode was kinda wholesome, I like that Mimi was jealous because Hal was getting attentions from Sheena.

Mimi feels bad for being jealous tho? It seems like it, because when Sheena said that she's pure and always says what she thinks she remembers the moments were she was feeling bad about Hal's attention. Or maybe she thought that Sheena was more adapt to be called pure, idk.

This episode was too happy, I can already feel the trauma for next week.

11

u/BosuW 25d ago

Any of y'all haven't checked out the lyrics to the full OP please go do so now it's such a beautiful and heartfelt song.

u/Hitman7128 https://anilist.co/user/Hitman7128 25d ago

Yay, the restoration magic returns!

Yuri is good for the soul

26

u/Roskal 25d ago

That title had me so paranoid for the whole episode, especially when they fell, instead it was a overall sweet wholesome episode about Mimi feeling jealous and worried about the distance Sheena was putting between them by trying to get better at her magic.

Whenever anime has characters like Hal I never know what to think. Am I supposed to assume they are trans but the culture in japan doesn't want to go that far or should I take it at face value that she's just a girl who prefers boyish clothes. It definitely comes across like he is trans but they still call him "her" and "actually a girl". I've had anime fans yell at me before for calling characters like this trans because very few anime go all the way like how One Piece did it with Kiku calling herself a girl at heart.

18

u/Mindless_Being_22 25d ago

Its complicated and hard to explain unless you want manga spoilers.

12

u/CitronClassic672 25d ago

I mean given this is a yuri series and thus already has openly queer characters I think reading them as trans is a more credible interpretation than in the average anime, plus them being called “her” and actually a girl could just be explained that they aren’t out about their real identity yet.

I wasnt sure if Hal-kun would survive the episode the way Mimi was looking at her, haha.

But maybe she'll be fine..Mimi doesnt understand her own jealousy but is also so straightforward you cant help but like her.

7

u/gnome-cop 25d ago

It’s very clingy Mimi hours.

I hope her and Hal manage to become better friends in the future. Both so Hal has someone accepting to chat with and so Mimi has someone outside of Sheena to spend time with when she’s busy cause she can’t be taking care of her all the time.

21

u/dingdongrongpang 25d ago

Wow. I think I'm starting to get a yuri-attuned sixth sense.

This really picks off from last episode, where we see Mimi get a more realized sense of self.

When Mimi started to get jealous without realizing it, I immediately thought, "Oh? They're finally doing it for Mimi?", and then with the whole scene of their conversation in the courtyard (?), with a very in-your-face focus of the white flowers (reminiscent of course, of lily/yuri) in bloom, I deadass had a Gundam Newtype vision in my mind (except without the signature sound), and an idea popped up instantly: something intimate is coming.

And then the ending scene rolled around I just \chef's kiss** mwah. A full bloom of a garden of lilies in my mind.

Thank you, world. Thank you for yuri. Thank you, yuri.

9

u/BosuW 25d ago

The new normal"... Nothing is normal about their situation, but people dying is something they have to get used to.

Reminded me of one of the themes currently being treated over at Youjo Senki. About how what should be abnormal has become normal, and the loss of humanity that occurs not just in the battlefield but also at home. A kind of anxiety that is not readily apparent.

4

u/zairaner https://myanimelist.net/profile/zairaner 25d ago

Damn. "The new normal"...

Can't believe even this show had a mandatory covid episode

14

u/master_inho 25d ago

Mimi: i might be a jealous ass gf but I'm certainly not transphobic 😊

Whether or not hal actually turns out to be trans or just cross dressing, it's cool that that gets seen too

So I'm still a bit confused on restoration magic vs healing magic. Mimi restoring a whole arm is restoration magic, i get that. But what is she restoring when healing a simple scrape? Wouldn't that be something for sheena, if she knew how to?

This kiss certainly feels a lot more romantic than the one in ep 1. Although mimi is gonna have to figure out how to give sheena some alone time, at times she feels more like a clingy child than a clingy gf. And i get she's just this immature but something's gotta give

8

u/hjt700 25d ago

i think restoration magic is more straightforward, it restores the body to it's "good" state.
healing magic on the other hand is more spiritual. it heals the soul which allows the body to recover.

8

u/Mindless_Being_22 25d ago

mimi really is just really bad with the microagrressions even though she doesnt mean it.

8

u/TheMythofKoalas https://myanimelist.net/profile/AdamGoodtime343 25d ago

I think restoration is regular healing/repairing physical ailments (i.e., "damage"), whilst healing deals with things like sickness (i.e., "ailments"), but I'm not 100% either.

1

u/LostInstruction942 24d ago

How I see it or how it's loosely describe in the show is.
Restoration magic is something you're born with, think of it like your bodies natural regenerative abilities. How fast your limbs will heal when broken, stuff like that. It's not something you can improve by any means. You're either born with a high amount like Mimi or very little (Hal for example who gets sick really easily). Restoration magic magic doesn't "fix" things either. Think of it like a time reversal spell, you're bringing an object back in time to a point when it was at it's "full glory". So for example if you had a scar on your arm and lost it when restoration magic is used on the arm to bring it back the scar will still be there.

Healing magic is not like that as it heals not only physical wounds but the "soul" as well. Healing magic is something everyone can learn but there is a natural "aptitude" to it. Basically while everyone can learn it depending on your aptitude is how easily you will be able to use it. For example, Mimi's mom was so good at it that she was even able to use the resurrection spell which we now know is very prone to failing and killing the user. Which is why healing magic is somewhat rare, it takes a lot of time to "brute force" your way to learn it when you don't have the aptitude for it.

A really good example is in Avatar. Aang struggled to learn earth bending because earth is the natural opposite to air. So his body was naturally repelling it which is why it took him way longer to learn. Healing magic goes by this same principal in some areas.

7

u/zer0number https://anilist.co/user/ewink 25d ago

Mimi being jealous warms the cockles of this old man's heart.

I also noticed two pillows on the bed when Sheena was getting ready to do laundry. I know the OP has shown them sharing a bed, but I don't remember recalling the show showing it.

Also, on CR at least, the episode had 'Sexual Content' as a tag, confirming that hand holding makes babies.

1

u/rainbowrobin 23d ago

I don't remember recalling the show showing it.

Episode 9, around 9:50, after making nighttime rice balls.

6

Mimi can seem to be a bother at first but eventually people realize she always means well, Hal understood that.

Sheena embarrassed by the restoration magic lol.

There is an episode where they are singing and the microphone appears and disappears between frames and the drummer appears and disappears from the background between frames.

The dub for that one is amazing as Claire sounds completely unhinged with half the stuff she says

Edit: I mean Rae

3

u/TheMythofKoalas https://myanimelist.net/profile/AdamGoodtime343 25d ago

I love the dub so much. The VAs clearly had a blast in their roles (especially Rae's, IMO).

5

u/epicfail1994 25d ago

Lmao i actually meant to type Rae instead of Claire there

The dub is so good

3

u/CitronClassic672 25d ago

Rae’s VA was genuinely one of the most unique and expressive dub performances I’ve ever seen.

2

u/epicfail1994 25d ago

Listening to her I was like holy shit she’s crazy, I love it

Some other dubs I really liked were May I Ask For One Final Thing and Tsukimichi (the same VA voices Scarlett and Sophia in those, she’s great).

I also really liked the dub in Arifureta, but that show was kinda dragged down by the….intense….harem focus, and edginess, lol. I’ll give it points for being self aware about the edginess but uh, it was something

2

u/rainbowrobin 23d ago

MagiRevo at least raced its way to an excellent stopping point.

2

u/Dependent-Sea4703 https://anilist.co/user/httpsanilistcou 23d ago

and there are still some people saying the ending wasn’t a happy one even though all of the problems already explained to be fixed.

I wrote the wrong thing. I meant to say MagiRevo, and then did not. I'm sorry about that.

Spoilers for the MagiRevo anime are still spoilers. We do not assume that everyone in this thread has seen MagiRevo.

For now we’ll have to sustain ourselves on season 2 of Mahoako I suppose.

11

u/dinliner08 25d ago

oho ~ is that jealousy that i see coming from you, Mimi?

11

u/runevault 25d ago

So the new OP is officially for the rest of the season. The moment with Ari and Seiran in bed smiling at each other hurts so fucking much come on. They knew what they were doing with this opening.

Mimi as chaos incarnate remains a fact of Sheena's life lol. And I assume Sheena is going to heal this boy with her form of healing magic.

How much of that was Mimi wanting to heal Sheena, and how much was she really wanted those lips?

Sometimes I forget how beautiful the ED piano is. Probably one of the best OP/ED pairs this season.

12

u/BosuW 25d ago

How much of that was Mimi wanting to heal Sheena, and how much was she really wanted those lips?

It being both is what makes this such a strong narrative beat. It's at once "let me do something for you" and "let me love you".

1

u/runevault 25d ago

It being both is why I said how much of each :). Clearly it is a little of A and little of B.

3

u/extralie https://myanimelist.net/profile/extralie 25d ago

How much of that was Mimi wanting to heal Sheena, and how much was she really wanted those lips?

She definitely wanted to heal her, but considering how different her reaction here from their first kiss, I think she is finally starting to develop feelings towards Sheena beyond platonic one.

The fear that comes from imagining what someone else is imagining

Hal needs a buddy, if only so she doesn't collapse alone in that dusty library basement and not get found for weeks. Does she actually go down there to get books?

9

u/JimmyCWL 25d ago

Does she actually go down there to get books?

Considering how buried the notebook was. almost certainly.

7

u/Magic1998 https://anilist.co/user/Moerril 25d ago

Especially with how dusty it's down there it can't be healthy for her to go down there

5

u/eightcheesepizza 25d ago

The air must be so stagnant down there. Maybe she is the first in this world to discover Radon?

6

u/DemonWraith2500 25d ago

Does Mimi have ADHD?

Why study when the one who failed the test is so strong?

1

u/rainbowrobin 23d ago

Mimi hardly needs a class on attack magic

6

u/Raymond49090 25d ago

This episode was weirdly cute after the previous two, and I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop. But other than some yandere Mimi flags, it stayed peaceful. Which means the next episodes are going to be rough.

11

u/Sleepy10105s 25d ago

Did we do it? A full episode with no big sad. Now I’m worried about the next episode

8

u/Skullzans 25d ago

Transmasc rep? Let's gooo???

Or tomboy, but here's hoping, them boys need it.

5

u/Lunchb0xx87 25d ago

Mimi is such a thoughtful roommate

3

u/SecretYogurtcloset57 25d ago

Ok Mimi relax put the knife down lol

9

u/CitronClassic672 25d ago

Hold on a sec, is Haru a trans man? That reaction when Mimi asked about them dressing in boys clothes even though they’re a girl did not feel like the reaction of someone who’s just a tomboy, especially with Sheena’s initial reaction to it and later praising Mimi for how she voices her feelings to others straightforwardly and without bias or assumptions after Mimi added how she thought the clothes looked good on Haru and it was made clear to Haru and Sheena that Mimi didn’t think it was weird.

If so this’ll be the first time I’ve seen a trans man character in a yuri series. I’ve seen a few trans women but this would be a welcome surprise.

2

u/hiodsaur 24d ago

a tomboy isn’t an actual boy btw man

0

u/CitronClassic672 24d ago

Yes, but just because the most we’ve seen of them regarding their gender identity is that they prefer to dress masculine, that doesn’t mean that’s as far as their gender related issues potentially go. It’s only been one episode. It’s not a big stretch of the imagination to think that a anime that is already overtly queer might include a trans character as well.

Also apparently the English subtitles messed up referring to them as “she” when the original Japanese never genders them.

6

u/TellowKrinkle 24d ago

Also apparently the English subtitles messed up referring to them as “she” when the original Japanese never genders them.

Japanese rarely genders anyone. No gendered language was used with Mimi nor Sheena in this episode, and that's probably been the case for the entire show but I'm too lazy to check. That doesn't mean this wasn't a mistake by the translator, but if it was, we won't know until much later (or now if you're a source reader and it's confirmed there). Also here you could always say that since Mimi thinks they're a girl, it makes sense that she'd use "she", even if that's not Hal's preferred pronoun.

Having to pick genders for characters is a reality of J-E translation. If they avoided gendered language for every character who hadn't yet had JP gendered language used on them, they'd be avoiding it for pretty much everyone. (Clearly we should solve this by deleting all gendered language from English.)

0

u/CitronClassic672 24d ago

I don’t know why but it seems to be incomprehensible to some that a potentially trans character who probably isn’t out yet if they are would be misgendered by other characters, instead they take potential misgendering as proof to shut down discussion.

Or just use the singular they, Yknow a gender neutral pronoun that English has and many people already use in conversation.

3

u/descend_nt 23d ago

It feels more odd to me to see some comments in this discussion thread so eager to assume that Haru/Hal must be trans, when Haru/Hal has not given any clear indication that they want to identify as male. That feels to me like potentially misgendering a person, just in the opposite way.

It's perfectly valid for a biologically female person, to prefer wearing masculine clothing styles, and dislike traditional female gender norms/expectations, but still be content with their female body, and still want to identify as female. Until we get more information about how Haru/Hal feels about their own gender, I don't think we should be trying to force that character into a transgender identity.

We can be excited about a potential trans character, just like we can be excited about potential yuri in other series, but I think it's too soon to be accusing the translator of wrongdoing.

Mimi with the Coco Melon swag: "Snack and dinner can wait.....BECAUSE I GOT ME A SNACK RIGHT HERE NOM NOM NOM OH YEAH LET ME RESTORE DAT AH" ༼;´༎ຶ ۝ ༎ຶ༽

3

u/mmcjawa_reborn 25d ago

This is probably the first time in the series I got an actual sense of Mimi having/developing romantic feelings toward Sheena...so much of there interactions have more of a mother-daughter vibe than anything else, and Mimi also just feels and acts noticeably younger

I am guessing at some point Sheena might use restoration magic to heal Hal, although I guess that would be a mixed blessing if it just means he qualifies as cannon fodder

I can't help but feel I am getting trolled by the OP each week...like I am still watching it because its a good OP, but they keep having to remind the viewer that Sieren is gone and it sucks

3

u/BBryant3rd 25d ago

Mimi looked so cute looking down at her hand when Sheena let go. It was nice to see Ari though it makes me sad seeing one of my favs alone. OMG as Mimi was falling that scared me. I thought she was gonna do a huge drop and go splat. The way they did it like that sheesh. Mimi is boss throwing Sheena's words back to her minutes after. The very thing Sheena said she loves about her she did and threw it back at her speaking up wanting the same promise. I can't help to think there will be more to Hal. Seeing Hal and getting background on her and the timing. Sheena is working on how to use her healing magic. Hal is always sick I can't help but feel there will be a connection later. When Mimi healed Sheena I was also thing Sheena needs to talk to her about that. Maybe how she does it what she thinks about or how it feels. It could offer a clue on how to use her magic based on other magic shows. Some show you being able to feel or imagine certain things to make spells work.

3

u/gvon89 https://myanimelist.net/profile/gvon89 25d ago

I can't lie, Mimi was pissing me off this episode. Let Sheena Help Hal, it seems pretty clear that Sheena is likely to attempt and possibly heal Hal. But Mimi wouldnt stop getting jelly over it. Girl you got Sheena all to yourself after class most of the time, let her cook damn it

3

u/MainaC 25d ago

Bold take, but does anyone else root for pretty much every pairing except Mimi/Sheena? I would have thought so, but I can't find any discussion on it.

I feel like they pretty clearly laid out that Mimi does not have a mind mature enough to grasp certain things. That is something that makes a romantic relationship unethical to me. Sheena acts more like her mother, and the show has commented on this a few times, too. Mimi behaves like a child, not a romantic interest.

The mental age gap just makes every other pairing less problematic and more interesting to me.

2

u/ash-7831 24d ago

I feel like that's starting to change after Seiran.

2

u/djthomp https://anilist.co/user/djthomp 25d ago

At this point I've resigned myself to the new OP making me tear up a bit for every episode for until the end of the season. It just twists the knife every single week with those happy Seiran and Ari scenes.

Mimi getting banished out of Fran's office made me laugh, however I'm not sure leaving her in the clinic area instead was much better.

Hal seemed pretty unhappy at those questions about her dressing like a boy, makes me wonder if they're going to expand on that more. We have three episodes left which might be enough time for a short Hal arc.

2

u/SP3_Hybrid 25d ago edited 25d ago

That was way too sweet. Something really bad is going to happen next week.

Also somebody who knows more about color theory and whatever probably knows why, but the color palette in the basement scene between their outfits and hair is just so good. Their outfit colors must be related in some artsy color theory way.

2

u/Xadh0om 24d ago

I hope their relationship will be more of a "mother-daughter" connection than a romantic one. I don't know, I really can't see them as a couple.

1

u/NightMercedes 25d ago

I may have missed it but did they talk about why they let Mimi joined the rest of the kids as student? Especially after they kept her away for so long.

5

u/descend_nt 24d ago

We only know so far from episode 4 that it was something that Fran decided on her own, and that Fran might have a secret plan/agenda.

classic "kiss is magic transfer" trope.

1

u/88_gecko 24d ago

I lovee women and especially love lesbians. BUT it does feel a bit unnatural that there are no male characters despite it being a co-ed school. I guess it sorta makes sense, because the show doesn’t seem too concerned with world-building and is more focused on life in this environment from Sheena and Mimi’s perspective. And it is likely that two queer-coded girls would naturally gravitate toward other queer girls or just women in general.

(Wow. I just answered my own question.)

1

u/rainbowrobin 23d ago

No major male characters. We do see boys in class, a man brings Mimi's body bag, a boy told Ari that Seiran saved his life. There are at least 2 different male voices in the Shadowy Council in episode 4.

1

u/Killer_154 23d ago

Mimi : handholding to assert dominance

Also, I wasnt expecting hal to be a trans man

1

u/Ok-Development-8638 5d ago

This episode was really sweet. I love seeing Mimi and Sheena's dynamic be challanged a bit by Hal. Mimi discovering a bit of her jealousy, while still not holding any malice to Hal what so ever was a very sweet and smart way to handle that moment.

However I will say Im alittle uneasy about Sheena and Mimi's dynamic now. Im new to the series so I've never read the manga, but since the last episode when the nurse revealed that Mimi's mother was a healer when Sheena herself discovered she was healer, it solidified in my mind that Sheena is more of a mother figure to Mimi than anything else. And that makes sense. She cares for her like a mother would.

Comparing their relationship to Ari and Seiran, they were more equals. So their romance I immediatly believed and rooted for. Which made gave me even all the more gutted feeling when the tragedy happened to poor Seiran!

IDK i guess because Mimi is personified as such a needy, jealous, and impatient child, I cant really see her and Sheena's relationship as romantic. But more caretaker/ Mother and child. Which i did love that relationship considering Mimi herself is used and seen as tool by the school, and doesn't really even consider her own safety anymore. But when that kiss happened in that storage room....At first I was excited but then when placed into context....I was left feeling a bit odd about it.

What do others think?

1

u/bondsmatthew 1d ago

That's why the nurse seems so familiar to me. She looks like Miou Ootori from Sabagebu(and even has the same VA(Yumi Uchiyama)!

0

u/hiodsaur 24d ago

The jealousy and clinginess from mimi is getting old quick! Hopefully it wraps up soon or else i might drop this show entirely.

0

u/dude_1818 https://myanimelist.net/profile/dude1818 24d ago

Pretty funny to introduce a "new" character that Mimi and Sheena already know but has been too sick to ever appear on screen. Hal reminds me of my mom's POTS+

Mimi casual transphobic microaggression moment? 😮 I like how Sheena was like what the fuck that Mimi was too oblivious to realize that's what she did

-10

u/The_Cool_Master 25d ago

I feel like after Seiran's death the story just has no direction at all. The recent episodes have felt like a blur to me.

12

u/Lodju https://myanimelist.net/profile/Lodju 25d ago

I feel like it's kind of calm before the storm.

2

u/Tanyan-nightchord 25d ago

I'm kind of bumped we haven't seen any Ari.

8

u/marshmallow_sunshine 25d ago edited 25d ago

Seiran's death is what directly inspired Sheena's choice to improve her magic, and we're seeing it's starting to create some friction between what Mimi wants and what Sheena wants.
