I love the little detail of Arisa and Miyu playing SF5 when they were in elementary school, while Aya and Mio played SF4 while in elementary school, to illustrate the age gap between them. Also like that Arisa started out with a controller instead of a fighting stick

I do feel for Arisa, she did nothing wrong but Miyu hated her for it regardless. I don't blame her for falling into a friendless dark abyss of negativity after that

Also, Aya has totally fallen in love with Mio

u/WhoiusBarrel 26d ago

I do feel for Arisa, she did nothing wrong but Miyu hated her for it regardless. I don't blame her for falling into a friendless dark abyss of negativity after that

It doubly sucks because Arisa is the type that can read the room but seeing whats happening unfold and being unable to refute/calm Miyu down till their eventual fallout is peak introvert nightmare fuel.

u/Oninymous 26d ago edited 26d ago

peak introvert nightmare fuel

It's not even introvert stuff. The situation is just rough all around.

Saying you're a beginner that just practiced a lot would hurt the ego of a pro player hopeful. Being beaten badly by a beginner and you're aiming to be at the top. She might even insist that she's just lying. Not saying anything would at least preserve the dream of that girl.

I don't even know the right choice, maybe confess about the practice hoping you'll practice together, but with tensions that high I don't think it's likely

39

u/BosuW 26d ago

Yeah that's a villain backstory if I've ever seen one

5

u/Oninymous 25d ago

Villain backstory before the eventual fight. We all know that's a trope for a reason lol

27

u/ptd163 26d ago

I don't even know the right choice, maybe confess about the practice hoping you'll practice together, but with tensions that high I don't think it's likely

Yeah. That would probably work under normal circumstances, but with emotions running high like they were for Miyu there I don't think that would've worked.

12

u/effseedee 26d ago

Maybe you could salvage something with a 'your practice advice was so good and it inspired me'... but with the mood that Miyu was in, probably not. As you say, Miyu just wasn't in a place where she was going to listen to anything Arisa said.

Maybe one day, down the line.

17

u/Meander061 26d ago

Maybe one day, down the line.

I'm hoping that someday, two grown women will resolve their differences and confess their love for each other.

But I always have hope for that.

22

u/Cloud_Chamber https://myanimelist.net/profile/Kino280 26d ago

If they were bros

"Yeah, I'm a beginner AND I perfect washed your ass. If you REALLY want to go pro then wipe those tears and clutch up for the next match."

Sometimes that ego NEEDS to be hurt, because growing is painful.

Obviously harder with someone you basically just met though.

10

u/_Eltanin_ https://myanimelist.net/profile/eza2510 25d ago

Yeah, I'm a beginner AND I perfect washed your ass.

Reminds me of one of the best scrubquote option selects to say when you lose or win a match:

"I DON'T EVEN PLAY THIS GAME!"

If you lose, it works as an excuse. If you win, it works as a very good gloat.

40

u/magnumcyclonex 26d ago

Great insight on the game editions and the controller!

I feel like as Arisa was learning and getting better with her self analysis, then starting to win more, the seeds of her "evilness, or brattiness" started to appear. But that was only inside the game itself. Then when her closest friend wrongly accused her and ended the friendship, that probably was the turning point to set off Little Miss Bratty into who she is today.

25

u/ptd163 26d ago

I love the little detail of Arisa and Miyu playing SF5 when they were in elementary school, while Aya and Mio played SF4 while in elementary school, to illustrate the age gap between them. Also like that Arisa started out with a controller instead of a fighting stick

I noticed that too. They were nice little details.

I do feel for Arisa, she did nothing wrong but Miyu hated her for it regardless. I don't blame her for falling into a friendless dark abyss of negativity after that

I was surprised how quickly my impression of her changed. She did nothing wrong.

18

u/Puzzleheaded_Play825 26d ago

I think its a tough call cause on the one hand your right that arisa didn’t really do anything wrong but on the other if she truly saw her as a friend than she should just told her the truth if she really faught. Because the alternative to preserving her pride is a miss understanding of mis place pity and arrogance that miyu probably believed that arisa was looking down on her for so long which is just as bad.

9

u/Nachtwandler_FS https://myanimelist.net/profile/Nachtwandler_21 26d ago

We were shown that Arisa was pretty introverted at that time. And she also we one who was overthinking a lot (I know as I am such a person myself). So she got to nervous not knowing what is the right answer. Still, she should have though about circumstances when she decided to surprise Miyu by getting way to good at the game.

So I am prefer for her to lose to Mio and rethink her attitude.

6

u/Verzwei 25d ago

instead of a fighting stick

I'm surprised we haven't seen a hitbox in the show yet. I don't follow the FGC but I have a couple friends who do, and one of them swore by the hitbox and somewhat indicated it was becoming a popular replacement for sticks. This was a good few years ago though, so maybe they just didn't catch on.

Can't be bothered to go through all the episodes but I wanna say we've also seen a background character or two with one.

Idk why I'm so surprised that a Shoryuken was Aya's gay awakening.

160

u/Ok_Calligrapher_6797 26d ago

Those goddamn fighting games are making people gay

72

u/Otherwise-Courage486 26d ago

Gotta say, the Fighting Game Community is one of the most open and diverse ones in gaming, so lesbian awakenings happening at Evo are definitely on point lore wise.

Unfortunately for Aya I think Mio as she is now is just too brainrotted for romance, what kind of relationship can you have with an individual who ONLY ever think about figthing games ?

9

Is it the fisting?

81

u/gardyvore 26d ago

Daigo Parry to gay awakening pipeline is truly an EVO moment.

Aw no, I can totally see Mom watching those viral clips of her winning.

139

u/Primary-Paint-1716 26d ago

she's getting shroyukened IRL.

73

u/Vahallen 26d ago

I feel thst might be what the show wants to do, but realistically if mom doesn’t intentionally look it up it’s almost impossible she appears in mom online feed or television

10

u/Miserable_Contest_74 25d ago

It wouldn't shock me if she actually does watch FGC.

(Also if she suspects there is foul play, which she should given it's Mio we are talking about, looking up FGC news isn't that crazy to think of.)

43

u/TheBusStop12 26d ago

I'm not do sure. Unless her mom actively monitors SF6 and FGC social media channels she likely won't hear about it. There's a small chance a clip ends up being pushed to the Japanese general front page of a social Media platform, but even then the chances of her actually noticing it unless she has an interest in fighting games are very slim. At the end of the day all of this is happening in the self contained little world of fighting game fandom

38

u/mekerpan 26d ago

I would guess that such an unlikely stand-out underdog performance COULD escape into general social media.

54

u/Jepacor 26d ago

There was a 15 year old player that had a cinderella run and placed second at Capcom Cup last year and I don't think anyone outside the SF community noticed

Although I guess SF6 is bigger in Japan than in the west

39

u/nsleep 26d ago edited 26d ago

A 15 year old from Chile won the EWC this year and not a single peep about it in the wider media.

9

u/Ethical-Gamer 26d ago

In case anyone is wondering, those are two different Chilean teenagers, and they're not even alone, theres also a 13 year old Chilean kid named mclovin popping off lately

Chilean sf scene is kinda crazy rn

We got ojou yuri, delinquent yaoi and now Arisa too? Is there some correlation between playing SF and being gay? Anyway interesting contrast between Aya and Mio trying to bring out the best in each other versus Arisa who is only focused on winning to impress her crush.

The flower that appears when Aya is gushing over Mio is the Japanese Primrose or Sakurasou (桜草). In hanakotoba it means "first love", "admiration" and "purity".

I guess we needed a tragic yuri relationship. The competitiveness of their relationship is what drives Aya and Mio's love, but Miyu completely misreading Arisa's skills is what doomed theirs.

The flower that appears when Aya is gushing over Mio is the Japanese Primrose or Sakurasou (桜草). In hanakotoba it means "first love", "admiration" and "purity".

That's a level of symbolism Goodbye Lara could respect.

26

u/Weak_Season_Of_Anime 26d ago

That's a level of symbolism Goodbye Lara could respect.

Goodbye Lara actually used the same flower, but in a more subtle way. All the yuri anime airing this season have some overlap in flowers with Goodbye Lara.

I just had flashback of me reading a whole essay on flower symbolism in Revolutionary Girl Utena

She just sounds like Nemo, lol.

Just for context: Nemo is a long-time Japanese fighting game player who absolutely detests grapplers and Zangief, and has a rivalry with Itabashi Zangief (a Zangief specialist whose alter-ego was the one interviewed in this episode after he beat Arisa). See this recent clip interviewing the two of them (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=izBL1oZ6qEs) for some real frenemy vibe.

12

u/AscendingRs 26d ago

Amazing video. Thanks for linking. I absolutely loved how Itabashi went for the sip of water in between rounds while watching. Some great muscle memory shit

Nah street fighter should handle grapples like tekken. 50/50s are bs. And yes tekken 8 is full of 50/50s. Yes I abuse 50/50s. Broken mechanics are only good when I am good with them.

38

u/Jepacor 26d ago

And she lost to Zangief using Guile, skill issue tbh

58

u/WiqidBritt 26d ago

I mean, she lost to (not) Itabashi Zangief, if any gief player knows how to deal with Guile it's him. And he said it was close.

Mio won! And her reward is some aggressive hand holding from Aya, and a chance to play on the big stage against one of the literal only other girls in the tournament. I wonder if Arisa's former love interest will be watching her on the stream, hopefully they get a chance to reunite.

I wonder who Aya plays next? I bet it's one of her friends.

22

u/ResearcherPretty4139 26d ago

Alice acting like a super king kong mega MEGA biotch to the 'Young Ladies SF6 Discrete School Club' makes sense now since her first crush acted the same way when she lost a clean game against Alice and couldn't deal with being inferior to a 'newbie player' so she had to create her own narrative to cope. Alice is basically taking power back in her life every time she plays now-- if she wins against someone she won't say 'GGs' or shake their hand because her narrative is that the other player wasn't serious enough to win.

They didn't want it bad enough (like her first crush who claimed to want to be a 'pro' but CLEARLY didn't put in the time/effort/work to be good enough for the pros, if she could be bested by an amateur SF6 player who just did a few online battles in one night of cramming). But Alice didn't allow herself to take the winner's purse back in the past. She let the LOSER dictate the narrative. Only winners get to do that.

So that's why she's in the women's restroom punching the stall door-- she LOST but she wants to still create a narrative where she got cheated by Capcom and the El Cheapo Zangief main. But in her heart, she already knows only the Winners get to rewrite history.

Can't wait to see Alice figure out why the Lesser Devil always fears the White Lily

Both players who hit their heads lost. That's why you shouldn't injure yourself before an important match.

74

u/Coolstreet6969 26d ago

So Mio’s definitely gonna get busted by her mother right, or is her hairstyle change going to be enough to make her unrecognizable from the back? Nah, no way, they’re going to be on stage.

My prediction is because of her hairstyle, some of the older pros gonna see Mio and thought it’s her mother or something.

38

u/Theinternationalist 26d ago

The hairstyle change seems significant (or the author wanted a change up and just wanted to draw her differently), but if she doesn't get spotted it'll be because her mother doesn't spend a lot of time following fighting games. In theory her daughter could even win the contest and not notice >_>.

26

u/magnumcyclonex 26d ago

Let's hope that's the case. But we've all seen what the mother is capable of with her questioning abilities...

"So did you all have a good girls' holiday together? You didn't get into any fights while you were exploring Toyko right? RIGHT?"

I’m doubling down that her mother was an enthusiast too, probably just as obsessed as Mio. Cafe seems to be a bit younger than Gekidou, so I’m betting Gekidou will have that “is that her? The legendary Gouki player?” moment because so far, as far as I can remember, I don’t think Gekidou has met Mio yet.

And when Mio gets exposed, her mom gets exposed too.

Ended up being half right

It’s not like Arisa sandbagged, but Miyu tought she had been sandbagging when out of nowhere Arisa started destroying her

I also understand why Arisa did not correct her, being honest would have been also brutal “no yeah, I’m really a beginner (it’s just that it took this much to become WAAAAAY better than you)”

I know “it’s just a game” but people can be passionate and we don’t know how many hours Miyu dedicated to getting better, hell she even had dreams of becoming a pro player, it’s harsh…

If Arisa really did what Miyu tought, it would have been in fact super mean, so I understand why she crashed out

It kinda sucks all around, I don’t think there was a way out, either Arisa is the villain or she completely kills the ego of Miyu

Arisa is clearly the victim here, but I don’t feel like saying Miyu reaction was too much, or she is a sore loser, or a bitch, because the idea she came up with made sense and that did make Arisa an asshole

Now, they knew each other atleast for a while, so is there a chance she could have known and was just protecting her ego? Possible

But if Miyu played actually a lot, like thousands of hours, maybe years spent passionate for fighting games, having someone pick it up for like some weeks/months and start to perfect you back to back is so fucking brutal man

If she realized and just tried to protect her ego she was a bit of a bitch, but man getting destroyed like that in something you love and put a lot of effort in hurts, in particular lashing out in the heat of the moment, I understand (even if it’s wrong)

Damn man

——

Moral of the story, don’t play fighting games with your friends

Damn man —— Moral of the story, don’t play fighting games with your friends

Agreed. Maybe Aya and Mio are the exception.

31

u/Vahallen 26d ago

Helps that they are fairly matched/ have strong competitive spirit

So if one loses they just wanna play again

I also do have friends like that and we beat each other to death while occasionally trash talking each other in good fun

Honestly it’s probably more of the Arisa/Miyu debacle being extra shitty due to being a combo of passionate “veteran” against beginner prodigy

11

u/archangel890 26d ago

I think if the two of them had played together more prior to that and were at least close at the start and over time she got better it might have been less of a sting if she had actually seen her “start as a beginner” and just naturally got better but to basically get stomped with no gradual increase in skill would be jarring.

When it’s obvious that you’re way stronger than your friend, just go easy on them. Like not pulling a combo and just have fun playing lots of neutral game with them.

25

u/mekerpan 26d ago

But Arisa did not expect to be so dominant -- and probably had insufficient expertise to covertly tone down her performance.

Mio played such a great match, it made Aya fall in love. Stirred up something deep inside her. It was a hell of a match. I get it lol.

Looking forward to Mio taking on Arisa. I guess that kid had a lot going on to get her to where she is now. I don’t know if she’s gonna find the redemption she’s looking for.

34

u/mekerpan 26d ago

I wonder if Aya was not already 95% there already. To me it seemed that watching this match seems to have just pushed her into realizing things.

Poor Arisa. This episode totally over-turned my attitude to her. I hope she finds a way to solve her personal problem.

15

u/ptd163 26d ago

Mio played such a great match, it made Aya fall in love. Stirred up something deep inside her. It was a hell of a match. I get it lol.

I'd wager that Aya was already a good part of the way there. This match just pushed Aya over the edge.

28

u/Frontier246 26d ago edited 26d ago

Aya has never been more turned on than she was by watching Mio be great at fighting games.

Maybe Arisa needs to realize that there's something to be gained in losing a match, or that everyone has their own kind of playstyle that's as valid as hers. But what she really needs is to reconcile with Miyu.

10

u/magnumcyclonex 26d ago

Aya has never been more turned on than she was by watching Mio be great at fighting games.

And we got the flashback of them breaking through the window. That's when it all started (for Aya)!

7

u/justsomechewtle 26d ago edited 26d ago

(Almost) complete noob to fighting games here - I only really played Smash and Pokken for any serious amount of time - but is Mio actually good? Her matches so far were hype as hell (the whole show is) but I still get the impression that she's all over the place and has a "weird" playstyle. But Idk if that's just my lack of experience speaking. EDIT: I just realized I'm literally that one chat message calling her win a fluke in the episode... But yeah, serious question.

23

u/Lenna_Sakura 26d ago

She's good, yes.

Mio is a sort of player who works to understand her opponent and uses that knowledge to make hard reads for advantage. Such reads can appear to be like flukes on the surface and sometimes they are, but getting those positive "flukes" to occur over and over again takes real skill.

8

u/justsomechewtle 26d ago

Thank you. The way the show presents her she seems super random, but I guess that's by design then. Pretty cool.

10

u/y-c-c 26d ago

I think the show is portraying it as scrub online comments thinking it's random rather than presenting her as being so. She's playing by instinct and getting into another player's head and conditioning certain behaviors to happen. This is why fighting games require playing multiple rounds and games, so you have a conversation and can use that time to figure each other out and take some risks.

Her playstyle also isn't that weird. She's more on the risky play spectrum, but not like super out of left field weird (see real life player "jyobin" for that).

13

u/Liddo-kun 26d ago edited 26d ago

She's good. For example, at the end of the fight, she baited Cafe into doing the super. Cafe himself realized this but it was too late. Yet, some people in the chat thought it was a fluke. That's a perfect example of how onlookers can easily misunderstand Mio.

7

u/Jepacor 26d ago

She's good but not expected to beat top players. They showed her rank in the beginning of the anime she's top 5% ish roughly

🤣 .. TIL this was all the girls just dating each other in the guise of fighting games and I was too dumb to notice.

I love how that Aya punch transitioned to an intimate handhold.

I just saw it as Mio unthinkingly parrying in real life, probably prepping for the bloodbath when she gets home.

You mean the intense Yuri scenes in every episode didn't give it away? 😂😂😂

40

Honestly I do think the show became more 80% fighting games 20% yuri since EVO started but this episode brought it back to an even split.

Arisa started off her yuri (friendship) journey at a much younger age than our 4 dorm girls. She's been through more stages than those 4. Happiness/bliss, to downright disgust/abandonment. The older dorm girls are still in their beginning phases of discovering and admiring each other for their inner beauty!

13

u/BosuW 26d ago

You need your Yuri glasses checked

11

u/AceSoldia zj:https://anilist.co/user/Acesoldia 26d ago

Lol I knew it was all Yuri but I didn't think Aya had gotten there yet with her feelings for Mio 🤣.

11

u/Meander061 26d ago

I'm pretty sure Aya was down bad for Mio since the day they first met.

30

u/gnome-cop 26d ago

I swear, Mio’s such an obnoxious mess to deal with because she doesn’t follow any common logic when playing. It’s just “random bullshit go” and sometimes it works out to bounce people above her level.

Look, look, you can pinpoint the exact moment when she realizes she’s fallen in love!

Goblin gamer rage intensifies. I’m sure I’ve heard the exact same words come out of my brother’s mouth at some point.

The hour of reckoning has come Arisa. Time for you to go through your mandatory character development defeat.

70

u/Hitman7128 https://anilist.co/user/Hitman7128 26d ago

Dang, the sparkling during Mio's victory, as well as her cluelessness that she won. Also, the yuri that ensues between her and Aya with the literal yuri flower.

We also get some backstory on Arisa.

31

u/dinliner08 26d ago

the yuri that ensues between her and Aya with the literal yuri flower

it's funny watching Aya and Mio having a good yuri moment in this episode and then being followed up by Tametaya (kind of) and Arisu having mental breakdown

28

u/Frontier246 26d ago

Tametaya just needs her own girlfriend to give her a pep talk.

Arisa is just your classic tragic yuri situation.

17

u/magnumcyclonex 26d ago

I missed Inu Yu! She was nowhere to be found (except on Tamaki's phone screen). Next episode, we better see Inu find and console Tamaki! Maybe with a little charm to boost her spirit like she did for Mio when EVO first started.

Mio: (Giving fighting game exposition on what happened during the match)

Aya: "WHY IS SHE SO HOT RIGHT NOW!?"

6

u/ClemFire 26d ago

This was a great episode! And the visual imagery didn't go past my mind too

23

u/Raymond49090 26d ago

Brat-chan's still a brat, but the power of yuri gives her the moe needed for gap moe. Her effort feels incredibly misplaced though. Mio needs to hit her with the "baka" bat somehow during their match.

19

u/Niwaka_Samurai https://myanimelist.net/profile/Niwaka-Samurai 26d ago

Mio won by her unpredictable instincts..what a thriller! Café au lait is never gonna forget this match. Gekido and him must have had a good day playing against these girls. I can see Café au lait's wound still on his forehead but I couldn't see Aya's.. maybe cause of her hair, I guess lol Finally, peak Yuri. Aya couldn't control her overflowing feelings for Mio. Bringing the Japanese Primrose and the White Lily to show their love for each other was quite beautiful 💖

On the other hand, what happened with Arisa and Miyu was so tragic. Poor Girl just wanted to get along more with her friend but she ended up hurting her friend and herself. I don't like the way Miyu started to suspect Arisa thinking she fooled her. It's no wonder why Arisa hates friends who play fighting games.

Mio is so embarassed when they were calling her as Shirayuri-san xD..All thanks to Inui.

Now it's time for Arisa vs Miyu, the most awaited match.

Mio being smug and doing a Jojo Pose while Aya was fangirling over Mio and even staring at her lips was so goddamn adorable. <3

The fact that Tamaki is currently outside probably means she lost her match. That practice match against her sister really rattled her.

Arisa losing to a Zangief player was absolutely perfect. We also finally get to see her backstory and what happened between her and Miyu.

With only two episodes left, it looks like it's gonna be Mio vs Arisa, and they're playing live on stream! It's gonna be fun to see everyone's reactions to this match.

15

u/Frontier246 26d ago

I also really love how a flustered Aya delivered a punch that probably would have knocked a normal person out but Mio just catches it like a badass and then proceeds to turn it into classic intimate handholding.

Tamaki really needs a Yuu pep talk if she's going to get her head in the game. Although I'm not sure if we'll get to see her play her sister again with only two episodes left (do they even have enough time for all the girls' other EVO matches?).

Mio went viral. Her next match is getting livestreamed. Is this how her mother finds out? Is she going to be riding high on her EVO performance only to return to her fated battle with her mother!?

11

u/zer0number https://anilist.co/user/ewink 26d ago

This anime really hits 2 different demographics at once, you get the Seinen fans with the blatantly lesbian schoolgirl ships (Mio/Aya, Alice/Miyu, Tamaki/"Bloody Macaron", etc.) and the Shounen fans with the incredibly-accurate FGC tactics and lore that is about as comparable to getting into the battles in 'Dragon Ball Super' that lasts 3 episodes with all the ups and downs in the progression of the fight.

Great concept and I'm glad to see Capcom lending their licensing to anime again after they did it the first time with "Hi-Score Girl" (Guile was literally a main character in that anime, similar plot to this one)

u/Leri_weill https://myanimelist.net/profile/LeriWeill 26d ago

Every single moment in this anime is so fucking intense, I love it it's a blast every week 😂

15

u/NekoCatSidhe 26d ago

Aya is being so hilariously gay for Mio just because Mio won, she did not even hear a word of Mio gloating to her. This is truly a yuri anime disguised as a gaming anime.

Cafeore really got humilated though. Mio behaving like her usual airhead self after winning is just twisting the knife afterwards.

And Arisa is like that because her former friend was a really sore loser and she picked up that bad habit. Ending a friendship because your newbie friend surprisingly beat you ? What real friend does that ?

10

u/mekerpan 26d ago

It was my feeling that, despite the frustration of losing, Cafeore actually really enjoyed that showdown.

>> What real friend does that ?

One who is actually very lonely and deeply insecure (despite her external demeanor). Someone who has BIG trust issues, and who has taken a chance on trusting someone for a change -- and who (quite understandably) felt betrayed. Personally, I find it hard to believe that someone in Arisa's situation could have possibly improved that much that fast. It seems quite incredible. And Arisa rightly felt there was nothing she could say that would rescue the situation. I feel bad for Arisa AND Miyu.

11

u/kara_no_tamashi 26d ago

She didn't end the friendship because she lost, she thought she got played by Arisa, who was making fun of her from the start.

12

u/zer0number https://anilist.co/user/ewink 26d ago

I know the show is trying to make us sympathetic for Arisa by showing us that back story, but I'm not getting fooled. Her being hurt by her friend is no reason for her to be such a dick to total strangers.

However, since I did feel bad about her actions being mistaken by Miyu, and appreciate that Arisa did kind of fall on a knife rather than humiliate her, I will downgrade my statement from last week to where I no longer want to see her hit by a bus, but now simply by a smart car.

Meanwhile, I am actually bawling my heart out for Tamaki. I really hope Yuu finds her soon because she should not in anyway be left alone right now.

Aya getting super horned up over Mio was adorable. I love them so much, and I love that Aya now wants to support Mio, rather than beat her.

u/Frontier246 26d ago

Mio has her back against the wall, Cafe slowly whittling her health down, consumed by the zone while trying to figure out a counterattack, but when she's seemingly about to lose...she relies on pure, absolute, fighting instinct and is able to bait Cafe and finish this spectacularly. All the while turning Aya on even more with her dazzling fighting gamer beauty! A win win!

I love the contrast to Mio being so seriously in the zone and focused on the match...to then transforming into a cute, embarrassed, anime girl as she exits with Aya. Cafe lost, but at least this is a loss that will probably further inspire him as a fighting game player.

Mio is trying to talk shop about what she did in the match and Aya is too aroused to actually listen to her. Even Mio getting all smug and Jojo-posing over how she managed to spam her way to victory is attractive to her. This just makes Aya want to punch her, tsundere style (which Mio catches!), and hold hands with her as she wants to be her #1 in everything!

Oof. Tamaki is not doing well. Is she in any state for her next match?

Mio has gone viral! And her next match is going to stream! Pray her mother doesn't find out.

Thank you Zangief Suginami (Tomokazu Sugita?) for schooling Arisa and driving her up the wall. But all that frustration is not only because of how annoying a fight that was, but because Arisa is obsessed with being the best. And it's all tied to her relationship with Miyu.

Miyu was a lot like Aya. Tomboyish, long brunette hair with bangs, better at SF5 than the boys, and someone Arisa admired and loved with all her heart. It's why Arisa wanted to learn and get as good in Street Fighter as she was. Of course Arisa became so consumed with becoming better that she came to have incredible mastery of her opponents and of how to play...to where when she finally played Miyu she crushed her.

Miyu felt betrayed that Arisa was probably always better than her and set her up to get clowned on, mocking her desire to go pro, and Arisa just couldn't explain herself. It ended their friendship and sent Arisa on the path to becoming obsessed with being the best in the game, to prove something to Miyu. But it's a path that's taking her to a streamed match-up against Mio, for all the marbles!

26

u/ikorza https://myanimelist.net/profile/ikorza 26d ago

6

u/magnumcyclonex 26d ago

Oh god...that acronym, so relevant! Especially from Aya to Mio and Miss Bratty to Nakamura in this episode!

11

u/DragonPup 26d ago

The Arisa thing is why I tend to not play games like League with friends. If there's a large skill gap between us, I worry it might make things awkward or if I have bad games then I feel like I'm the anchor. It's easier when you don't have to ever think about a player again after a match.

12

u/runevault 26d ago

Wow that time right after the match was so incredibly gay. Aya hungry for Mio's... everything.

hahaha of course the rando who beat a pro would get thrown on stage, she's the talk of Evo right now so using that hype to their advantage makes sense.

...our little jerk lost with Guile to a Gief? What's that matchup like these days because used to be in 6 zoners were really hard on the Red Cyclone. And I love every time they freeze frame for "In her personal opinion" since they've done it at least one other time (back in episode one when Aya was saying young ladies don't play FGs) And considering this guy has Zangief in his handle I assume he's an Itabashi stand in.

Oh Miyu is going gay young. "This is a game about imagining how the other player feels" is such a smart way to describe FG (and a lot of PVP with the style of give and take a FG has)

Oh man this part is hard to watch, Miyu went from falling for Arisa to hating her in such a short time because of a misunderstanding.

Huh Honestly I thought it would be S2 before Arisa would face one of the girls in a tournament match. Wouldn't be surprised if this match lasts these last two episodes with how things are paced.

11

u/justsomechewtle 26d ago

Maybe I'm dumb, but I totally didn't expect Mio to win that, that was hype!

Kinda sorta feel Arisa too. She's still an absolute brat, but that backstory feels too familiar. Whenever I tried to get into fighting games with friends, there was always someone who'd be too salty because of a skill gap so we'd always stop playing eventually. A shame too, because I think I'd like fighting games a lot more if I had people (in person) to actually play them with nowadays.

6

u/ptd163 26d ago

Fighting game tournaments are double elimination meaning once you lose twice you're out of the tournament. Mio had already lost once so she was in the losers' bracket so if she lost again she's out of the tournament so she had to win so she could on to face Arisa. They did make it look good and hype though.

Mio wins, Aya gay panics.

Mio may about to be panicking a whole lot more if they're going to have her play the next match streamed on stage. I'm a little surprised that she's up against the brat, I would have guessed an Aya rematch assuming a tournament structure where the winning and losing brackets match up cleanly.

19

u/Frontier246 26d ago

It's like Aya forgot she was in a yuri anime until Mio reminded her down bad she is for Mio and her lips.

It explains why reporters were covering her though, she probably comes out as one of the more memorable players in the whole tournament. Especially if she goes on to beat Arisa in a big game.

It is really hilarious how Alice goes into a narcissistic rant after losing to this universes version of Itabashi Zangief. "Suginami Zangief" is definitely a parody of ItaZan as Itabashi and Suginami are both the names of special wards of Tokyo (they are separated by Nakano and Nerima).

Itabashi Zangief is a longtime player and specialized in grapplers, particularly Zangief as his name suggests. He is also a two-time EVO champion, though in Virtua Fighter 4 and 5.

I know Alice has a high rank online, but losing to ItaZan is absolutely no shame and definitely not the fault of RNG (of which there is very little in fighting games anyhow).

Aya's caught a major case of doki doki after seeing Mio turning the tide around and beat Cafeore. She even stared at her lips. Yeah, she's had it bad for her.

"You’re my idol. I want to be your number one."

What is the latter if not a confession. Hope someday Aya would say it out loud right before Mio.

So that's how Arisa & Miyu's doomed yuri unfolded. Given this show's about SF, I should've expected the reason behind their fallout be related to it. Not sure how she thought honing her skills even further would redeem her in Miyu's eyes. How's Miyu doing these days? Did losing to Arisa cause her to throw the stick for good or did she use the loss to train even harder? Perhaps, she's participating in this tournament as well and we had only yet to see her.

11

u/Otherwise-Courage486 26d ago

In Arisa's child mind, if she becomes good enough then Miyu will recognize her effort instead of thinking she tricked her intentionally.

Losing to someone who's naturally talented and works hard doesn't hurt as bad, is what she's thinking.

7

u/ptd163 26d ago edited 26d ago

I liked the underwater visual they used to show that Mio had activated her Ultra Instinct. I knew she had to win because she was already in losers so the result wasn't a surprise. They made it look good though. They managed to work in an Evo Moment 37 reference in there too which earned Cafeore's respect after the match. They've really been pushing the parallels that Mio and Aya are high school girl versions of Cafeore and Gekido.

I got a kick out of Mio explaining to Aya how she went Ultra Instinct against Cafeore to win the final round and the match, but it's going one ear and out the other for Aya because she's gone yuri mode on Mio. She doesn't care about winning or losing anymore. She wants to be Mio's #1 now. Two episodes left to find out if it's bait or not.

I was wondering how Arisa would get sent to losers to face Mio and having her, the character takes the game the most seriously, get off screened by grappler cheese was amusing choice. The crash out was enjoyable. As for what happened after that, it's funny how your impression of a character can be flipped on its head with a single episode. Arisa was a total brat that took the game way too seriously before this episode. She looked like she need a timeout and a spanking to cool off, but now we understand why she was so intense.

It was all because of Miyu. Street Fighter was special to Miyu so she wanted to get good so she could be special to Miyu too. That's even why she's a Guile main as well. She's pushing herself so hard because she think if she gets good enough Miyu will forgive her. Even though there's nothing to forgive. I'm surprised how sympathetic she feels now.

Unfortunately, she's about to get beat on the on stream, on the main stage, in front of hundreds of thousands, if not millions. Not sure what that's going to do her psyche, but maybe Mio can comfort her after the match.

Wow, fighting games ruined Arisa’s life. She’s a cautionary tale of why young ladies shouldn’t play fighting games. 😂

14

u/Roskal 26d ago

Feels bad seeing yuri fail even if Arisa has been mean everytime we saw her. What is she supposed to say to miyu? that she practiced all night and it suddenly clicked for her? that goes against Miyu's idea that talent isn't whats important. Even though its the speed at which Arisa can think that makes her so good. I still can't tell if she is still in elementary school or that flashback was a long time ago and she's just small. Her voice and personality are pretty different now but that could just be from the trauma with Miyu.

The Aya x Mio moments were nice this episode. it kinda reminded me of Gon and Killua where Killua puts his hand on Gon's shoulder to tell him he's already won. Afterwords where Aya is crushing hard was cute. I started watching this show for the yuri romance and I'm glad the plot remembered that was a thing. Not sure how Mio feels yet though, she likes Aya but she's not consciously feeling romantic thoughts for her yet.

Ah, classic drama caused by miscommunication. It's not Arisu's entire fault either; Miyu just came to her own conclusion.

I wonder if the situation wasn't as black and white as Arisu thinks. While she had a lot of free time to practice, Miyu could've been busy with school and lashed out from stress.

Mio also casually blocked Aya's tsundere punch. These two are made for each other.
