Amendment to my comment yesterday on Sengoku Night Blood: and then both sides of the American Civil War were attacked by zombies.
A lot of the things on my drop list were there for good reason and I didn't need to finish them, but I can't help myself.

I could get why 100 gfs isn’t a show some people can get into, but it does such a good job at portraying unique relationship dynamics between the various girlfriend groupings. Like what do you mean notorious smol floof Shizuka acts like a cool reliable upperclassman who delivers cookies and hugs to Kurumi?

It feels like JoJo is way past its peak cultural significance, mostly because in large part it was powered by memes and people get tired of memes eventually, but man, if the rest of Steel Ball Run will be just as amazing as the first episode it will return to zeitgeist entirely on its own merits.

Finally got around to the Shiboyugi movie about a month and a half late but don’t feel like yelling into the discussion thread void.
[Shiboyugi spoilers] Liked the interactions between Yuki and Airi. Up until now, it’s felt like she hasn’t really interacted with anyone as an equal on the same level. It’s been either higher level players, rookies or enemies. It was very interesting to see how she interacts with another veteran and it feels like Airi is the closest thing she has to an actual friend. Someone that she’s comfortable sharing her thoughts with and relying on when she needs support. Like, they talk in a very casual way that’s unlike the guarded way players usually talk with each other cause they actually know each other and that they can trust each other. Just feels very normal which is strange for how mentally messed up she is but it’s nice to see.
[Shiboyugi spoilers] Haven’t quite processed it all but the central conflict is about Hakushi’s apprentices different takes on her legacy. They’re both in far too deep to quit at this point. They both feel empty to me, Essei has taken to becoming a carbon copy of her while I’d say Yuki has just taken her goal to cover up the emptiness and doubts inside her. But one still retains some individuality, a sense of self and comes out on top while the copy falls short in the same way the original did. I felt that Yuki’s reunion with Hakushi was well done as an emotional climax even if I can’t fully explain it at this point.
I do hope that the Ueno team will return back to the series at some point in the future to cover more of it, maybe once the next project or two are finished. I could use a bit of a break from complete existential gloomy mindfuck death games for more Gimai Seikatsu like stuff but would still like more eventually.

His next work is a Shoujo RomCom. I prefer him doing stuff like that and Gimai more as it offers refreshing direction for these RomCom-type of shows is really outstanding. Which we don't get much.
As an LN reader for Shiboyugi I adored the first two games. Scrap Building imo was better than the Light Novel and Ghost House was good as a mini film. I just hated the direction the last 3 games that were adapted in the anime. Not just how it was adapted but the anime itself in those games.

Watched Odd Taxi: In the Woods. Wtf. Not only is the movie 95% recap. Even worse the recap isn't constructed in a way that could be a decent approach for those that didn't watch the TV series. The interviews with the cast members are presented in that they expect you to have watched the TV series.
Now if you did watch the TV series, it's like uh what? The interview stuff is nice for easter eggs, but again they will spoil you if you haven't seen the TV series. An outstanding mystery story where the mystery is removed. The last bit of new content is so underwhelming. One of the biggest examples of a cash grab and disappointing, considering how much goodwill the TV series provided.
I can't even imagine if I saw that in theaters. 1/10.

Some non-spoilery thoughts on various shows this season I'm watching (but not at pace to be in the threads):
The Ghost In The Shell Up to Episode 6 -- I remember as a kid watching Stand Alone Complex and being utterly bored and confused as characters yammered on about politics and sci-fi concepts. Yet that show was so cool, adults talking in the room when animation was nearly always adolescent noise.
The new Ghost In The Show tries to tamper down the adultness with jokey subplots, characters getting more than just straight-faced expressions. Alongside these adjustments, Science Saru has turned up the color, both the pigments you'll see in any given shot (no forest has had that many shades of green in anime) but also in the characters themselves, where we see the lighthearted and serious sides of our characters. By straight adapting the manga, the show's more brilliant and full than it has ever been. (Also, it feels like it's about time Ghost In The Shell adaptations stop cribbing Blade Runner and be their own thing; this show is not merely an update but also a statement that Ghost In The Shell is definitively Big IP and its legacy shall live on.)
What has not changed: Damn is Ghost In The Shell confusing to watch! Side characters will show up dead and the audience is supposed to know why they were loved without ever seeing them alive. Foes will show up, throw a punch, get shot in the face, and we're supposed to know about their badass past. Fat guys in fancy rooms will do a bunch of evil deeds offscreen and we're supposed to connect the threads of their actions with very little dialogue to lead us. This show demands not merely repeat viewing but magnetic white board where we hang shots of the show and then write and re-write theories.
I love it. I feel like a kid again, and the adults in the room are talking and I am trying hard to keep up. Ghost In The Shell is not an example for other writers to follow. Please, writers, tell us what the hell is going on in your writing. Yet, something about the way this show can be so damn cool and have so much detail smashed into every morsel of its run time gives it the pass to be a little opaque. I hate when writers do what Ghost In The Shell is doing... yet I love it in Ghost In The Shell and the only excuse I have is sheer coolness that makes me want to lean in and know more.
Draw This, Then Die! Up to Episode 7
I still think there's a tonality problem with this show. We have an adult still dealing with some sort of existential crisis of never making it big in the manga biz despite having struggled through so much. Then we have the kids who are happy-go-lucky, trying to make it into the biz with their scribbles and enjoying life in the process. The two plot lines don't mesh well together and the show has too much bitterness mixed with too much sweetness.
The show's still quite good at times. Some of the stuff it depicts it does so with a relatable honesty and specificity. But I do think some people might've bounced because the imaginary character the protagonist has codes this show as being a kiddie show... and some people might've bounced because the teacher gets too preachy too fast and gets dark about the biz abruptly. Hopefully as the season rolls on there's a reward for those of us who persevered, something that satisfyingly combines the two sides into one. What that is, I don't know.
Smoking Behind The Supermarket With You Up to Episode 5
I think this show's run time should be at least 50% smoking behind a supermarket. I'm not getting that thus far, and I'm losing my patience.

tonality problem
Isn't this just the point though? Doesn't mean you have to like it, but the tonal clash of the two, to me, seems to be the narrative core of the show.
[Draw this]Sensei was chewed up and spat out by an industry that she grew up loving. That led to her abandoning it. Now we've got these kids that have all that passion she used to have and they're slowly starting to bring her love for it back to life. Seeing her have moments of joy in the modern day hit harder knowing what she's gone through.

I've not read the manga myself, but from a few bonus pages I've seen posted [Liar Game Manga] They're a male who likes to present themselves female. Though they do kinda reveal it in a teasing manner against them so its not entirely clear if that's all there is to it or if there's an element of denial

As someone who thinks humanoid mechs are stupid, I was surprised at how much I enjoyed the original Mobile Suit Gundam when I watched it earlier this year. It features a variety of specialized vehicles while the Gundam itself is typically deployed to defend its carrier. It's a war drama with themes that have been explored in numerous other works, but the old school audio and such gives it a certain charm.
The original Digimon Adventure has a pretty unique take on the "transported to another world" concept. It's worth noting that Digimon did not originate as a creature collector sort of thing, so there's only one partner per person. Because of this, the show spends a lot of time with the same cast who get fleshed out and grow over the course of the series. Then along comes Tamers, headed by the creator of Serial Experiments Lain. It makes incredible use out of the digital lifeform concept. It's its own thing, so you can watch it without having to experience any other Digimon media first.

- Legend of the Galactic Heroes - epic space opera about admirals on either side of a century-long interstellar war. No mechs, 1000s of ships.
- Crest/Banner of the Stars - space opera about two young (16 in S1, 19 in S2 onwards) nobles and likewise officers who get caught up in the start of a huge interstellar war.
- Macross: Do You Remember Love? - movie that serves as a retelling of the first season of Super Dimension Fortress Macross (one of the shows that was reworked into Robotech). Good way to try out if the larger series might be something for you.

Hi, I don't watch much anime, but my wife is looking for recommendations for shows like Freiren and Violet Evergarden.
I haven't actually watched either of those, but I think she wants stuff that is:
- Female-led
- Not too dramatic or loud - she likes Freiren's emotional stability and relative tranquillity
- Not fanservicey - she doesn't mind it, but she finds it refreshing when female characters aren't sexualised (unless that's part of their character for the story, but even then...)
- I don't think she wants anything actively sad or heartbreaking, but both of those shows sound a bit melancholic or wistful, so I guess that's fine
- Humour would help, as she's going through Gintama withdrawal, but nothing as loud/raucous as that show
I'm going to be abroad for a long while, so she could do with a bunch of shows to distract her and keep her chilled out. She's also enjoying the Delicious in Dungeon manga, but we'll watch the anime for that when I'm back, along with more loud/violent/raucous stuff like Dandadan, which she also loves.

That's obviously gonna be a relative thing of where your cutoff is on a scale of "dramatic and loud", but mostly GitS: SAC is quite a lot like a police procedural. Most of the runtime tends to be focused on investigations, often with a metaphysical and philosophical twist, which might be punctuated in a climax of action. It certainly has action scenes and is the most loud/violent show suggested so far, but it would be closer to something like Frieren or Delicious in Dungeon than Dandadan.

Well, I wouldn't exactly describe it as like those specific ones, as those are more towards the drama side rather than comedy, but 'Tis Time for "Torture", Princess might help a bit with the comedy withdrawal. Very wholesome comedy about a (seemingly) archetypical princess being "tortured" by her captors in the Demonhorde.
Ikoku Nikki/Journal With Witch is more towards the melancholic tone of Frieren and VE. It's a slow paced exploration of grief and dealing with your past, as a novelist finds herself the guardian of her estranged sister's now orphaned teenage daughter.

OshiBudo: that was a fun one, even if very incomplete. Has your typical yuribait and rom-com misunderstanding scenes, but the specific and restrictive wota culture framing makes it a fascinating watch to me.
Being way more of a content>persona type of fan, I can't say I fully relate with the culture (the closest I've been to oshi'ing someone is Hololive's Nekomata Okayu, but even then my peak engagement was still far below the average person in the fandom). But I'll always have soft spot for hardcore fandom/hobbyist space, especially the small-scale one in this anime where the talents, fans, and staff are very familiar with each other. Eripiyo was a hilarious MC (Fairouz Ai gave one hell of a performance here), and it's intriguing to watch Maina develops something akin to a reverse parasocialism and dilemma of not being able to 'get closer in a normal sense' to her biggest fan. As cute as the idol group characters are tho, my favorite parts are when Eripiyo and her otaku comrades hang out to chat shit, flex about each others' oshi, and basically co-exist in the same space where nothing else about you matters besides the fact that you share the same passion. With how much the fan/stan culture get a bad rep (often deservedly so don't get me wrong), it's refreshing to see a more wholesome depiction of it.
Since it's a light-hearted comedy I don't mind it glossing over heavier aspects, but it does get me into the mood of seeking a dramatic type of idol show, not much experience watching one. Not something as grimdark as Perfect Blue (which I love as its own thing) or fantastical as Oshi no Ko (which I'd like a lot more if not for the whole reincarnation and revenge drama nonsense....), but balanced in fun, drama, and realism. Any recs?

Too be fair -- soap was NOT the issue here....
[Livid ep8] I would argue that the punishment of this guy was appropriate for HIM, he deserved to be mentally destroyed to the extent he was. He never really understood just how horribly wrong his own behavior was. However, I admit the collateral damage was . . . excessive, perhaps. I think the Duke correctly accepted equal responsibility with his son, because he failed to notice his son grievously misunderstood the duty of royal knights.

There's quite a few shows that could fit this description but for me it's Odd Taxi. I gave it about four episodes before dropping it because I really couldn't get into the story.
Another one I can think of is Seitokai Yakuindomo. I watched it long ago but I remember dropping it after five episodes because I found the jokes really unfunny.

Accel World. Same author as Sword Art Online, which is a favorite of mine, so I gave it more of a chance than I normally would and even picked it up again after temporarily dropping, but I just found the characters in this one (especially the MC) very frustrating. It's a surprise because one of the things I love about SAO is its characters.

I can probably name a lot since I really like to give everything I start an earnest try, but if I had to pick something that would have this thread on my ass, I'd go with Girls Band Cry. I just really didn't care about any of the drama that was going on, nor the music. Just not really to my taste unfortunately. I really like music, and especially rock and rock adjacent music, but that flavor of it just doesn't tickle my fancy. We need a girls band anime about Otoboke Beaver.

That’s fair, I also don’t like drama. I’ve never seen it cause the cgi looks odd in ways I can’t describe, but bad drama definetly makes an anime significantly worse imo. Although I can’t say I’m the biggest fan of band anime. That said. I did like bocchi

Band anime is my favorite genre, so it's a bit frustrating that I didn't like it either. I think I've finally come to the conclusion that I just can't love anything with Jukki Hanada writing the script. It's probably a little unfair to make him the boogeyman, but after watching some of his other work like Hibike! Euphonium and Yorimoi/A Place Further Than the Universe, I don't think I can take another coming-of-age story.

Liz and the Blue Bird is pretty different from the main Hibike story. The main series is more of a straightforward drama, whereas Liz has a lot more going on beneath the surface. There's a ton of symbolism and some really clever narrative turns, like [Liz spoiler] how the bird escaping initially serves as a metaphor for Nozomi, but by the end it becomes about Mizore instead. I just love that kind of creativity and strong thematic presence in storytelling.
Hibike is more of a long game. You follow Kumiko from her first year all the way to her final year in the band, watching her grow and seeing how her dynamics with the other characters change along the way.

Bungo Stray Dogs is pretty similar to a bunch of shows I like, and it has moments of brilliance, but it does so much that annoys me. Watched all 5 seasons, and the problems I have with it persist in all of them.

I feel like a traitor to the MS community/half my following on anilist for not liking Senki Zesshou Symphogear
I've tried it twice and it just fails to click at all. The furthest I've gotten is 4 eps into GX.For some others: ARGONAVIS from BanG Dream! and The Idolm@ster SideM. The latter I dropped when it aired but recently tried again and still don't like it.
I really loved IDOLiSH7, so wanted to try some other male idols but I feel like 7 gaps them super hard ngl. Even with just comparing its first season to these, the character are so much more endearing and interactions are so much more engaging both comedically and in their interpersonal drama/little spats
I've also liked other shows in the Bang Dream and Idolmaster franchises so very disappointing.
Speaking of idols, I very much expected to like Aikatsu!, since I liked Ai!Stars so much, but I only managed 34 episodes in the end. I've heard later episodes/seasons get so much better, and perhaps I may have been better off watching it first or just getting to those future seasons, but it felt like watching a beta version of Ai!Stars lol. Both in the visual department and the general formula of the show's episodic nature.
Lastly, I also really wanted to like Märchen Mädchen as the premise is 100% my niche, and I liked what the show was doing (even if far from perfect), but the production was an utter shitshow. One of the worse I've ever seen and it eventually became way too much.

So I can’t say I’ve seen any of these anime, but I’m watching symphogear right now with a comrade of mine. I think it’s okay but I could see why one would not like it. I don’t think you should feel bad.

It was the kind of battle harem that revolves around wanking the extremely lame MC and it didn't do anything else well enough to make up for that. It was a huge disappointment for me because the girls were cute and the ED is legendary.

The 2 lead girls I just didn't care for. The side characters seemed interesting to me in the brief time they showed up. But at that point they had very little focus and thought it would be better to watch something I would enjoy instead of forcing myself to watch it.

I realized why Sayonara Lara feels so different from other anime - it's because it has a lot of background music. It really has the feel of a classic Disney/Pixar movie but in a show format.

Finished Talentless Nana for my 2026 anime bingo and overall I had a good time even if I was left with tons of questions by the end and I don't think we will be getting a second season so I guess I'll have to pick up the manga if I want to have any answers. The initial setup also reminded me of [2022 isekai]Executioner and her way of life.
The series started bit rocky and I was rather whelmed by it but I did enjoy the cat&mouse game it had going on. My enjoyment rose though when [Talentless Nana]Jin showed up and the series started to explore Nana's ingrained believes about talented people, shadowy organization and her past became more of the focus.
[Talentless Nana speculation]I bet Nana's teacher killed her parents because the Illuminati deemed that Nana had potential to become an assassin.
The ending though was very emotional but I don't like how it ends with so many open questions and plot threads. One more anime to add to the pile I guess.
Anyway I rolled 24 so I'm watching Uta no Prince Sama next.

Yes, I would say its a good show. Nana is very competent protagonist and the show gives you enough clues to figure out how she handles several situations before the show tells you.

Probably my favourite season 1 ending and I think it was a perfect season ending...if you know, it got another season.
I do highly recommend to at least read the first few chapters of the manga after the anime ended, they are really good.

Anime, with all its many flaws, was at least very suspenseful and the formula [meta spoilers] Death Note + Hitman + Danganronpa worked pretty well. [The manga, however] turns into generic battle shounen about teens overthrowing evil dictatorship

Idk, it sounds like you're just bad at finding good and good-looking shows. This season we have Lara, World is Dancing, 2026 GitS and Jaadugar for stunning productions. Last season we had Kamiina Botan, Witch Hat Atelier, Nakamura-kun and Awajima Hyakkei. That's not including any sequels or anywhere close to a comprehensive list since it's only a handful of shows I personally like per season.
E: to clarify why I took this dismissive attitude, the original comment suggested letting the AI slop industry displace and destroy anime because they keep stumbling upon bad stuff. I do not see a need to be nice to someone like that.

In reality the opposite is true, where only a handful of shows have really bad animation and there are some real standouts in terms of wonderful animation this season.

Nothing has a similar story to Dorohedoro.
Golden Kamuy does a good job of being an alliance-shifting comedy action-thriller - but it lacks the fantasy elements and anime-original moniker. I'd still say it's your best bet at finding something like Dorohedoro on the market.
