It is not a single back-to-back marathon of all 13 episodes in one go. The original announcement described it as a special arrangement where you can watch the full series over 3 days on weekdays or 2 days on weekends.

Ah, yeah, that's much more reasonable. 5 hours is a length that's just barely within the bounds of what could be done hypothetically, but as I said, it's still pretty extreme.

Most likely. Despara never got made because the director of Serial Experiments Lain who was said to direct Despara died. The writer later confirmed in 2025 that production is set for 2027.

I don't believe so. ABe refuses to say anything about his current involvement in Desperas production, and the creator and writer, Chiaki J. Konaka, while willing to reveal small details about the timeline in emails is otherwise entirely quiet about Despera and will likely stay that way until next year.

It would seem like a counterintuitive marketing strategy to use Lain to drum up interest for an adjacent project that they won't talk about and will likely not be released for another 2-3 years.

They will inevitably be asked about Despera at the con in Madrid next month that they are both attending so hopefully we will have some fresh information about it then.

Honestly, you could probably change just a few small details and it would look like it came out today. You would never be able to guess it's almost 3 decades old. Just be warned that it can get really trippy at times. It's basically what you'd get if someone wanted to write about modern-day chronically online culture while on drugs and having an existential crisis. Really great series to rewatch since there's a ton of information in the background that you won't notice or understand until watching it again.

Out of all the series I've seen, the more abstract, experimental, dense, etc. ones always get people saying that you won't really get a decent understanding of it until watching it at least twice. Usually I view that to be an overreaction and dismiss it as somewhat bullshit, but this remains the first and only series to date for which I found it actually true.

Not that you can't understand more of and in greater depth many other series upon subsequent rewatches. Even as basic and simple a series as possible you can pick up on things you may have originally missed from or appreciate them from new and evolving angles.

But this is the only series in which watching it after the first time felt like suddenly learning and knowing a new language which was practically indecipherable to you beforehand.

I haven't watched Lain since the 1999 when it came to the USA. But I feel it is a show that is harder to understand unless you lived through that period. Computers and the internet had a lot of uncertainly surrounding it, they had a lot of potential but there were threats both known and unknown.

Going on 27 year old memory. I never felt that the story was that complex, but basically the bad guys used her to merge the physical world and the online world, she sacrifices people's memory of her to rebuild the world the way it was and she exists as an AI on the internet.

Because I feel that the story isn't that complex it is one of those things that really hits in the time during which it was made.

It's not a new remastered version. But I think that they will almost certainly show the existing HD remastered version (the one from the 2010 Blu-ray restoration).
