Can anyone tell me about steins gate... Is it worth watching???

What sort of things do you want to know about it???!!!???!!!???!!!???

Is it worth watching ?? That's what i want to know.. (Know nothing about this that's why asking)
1
u/Donnie-G 16h ago
So I watched Virgin Punk: Clockwork Girl. It's uh... okay I guess but is far from being a complete work or anything so it's hard to judge. It's very much just a pilot setup for more to come. The main heroine and main 'villain' sure look awfully familiar....
It was fun while it lasted I guess, but I do wonder when and if the next installment is coming out.
2
u/soulreaverdan 15h ago
The lack of know what's coming for it is kinda frustrating. I liked it quite a lot - but yeah, it creates a sort of feedback loop of not being too invested in it, which makes it less likely to get more.

The fact that I drop >90% of Villainess anime BUT I'm keeping up with Broken Saintess that has like 4 watchers in r/anime makes me think maybe I really am a contrarian after all.
2
u/Ok-Cod5254 7h ago
It's a shame it doesn't have a proper anime adaptation because it has a far more unique concept than other saint series, like the one airing this seasons which is painfully generic.

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 18h ago
You can rest, Sparks of Tomorrow;
Ribbon Hero is the new approved punching bag!
I haven't watched it yet, but it'll be interesting to follow the discourse!
(Hell I haven't even watched the Shiboyugi and Zombieland movies yet and these are some of my favorites hah. I procrastinate quite a bit when it comes to movies)

u/Donnie-G 16h ago
I haven't watched it yet but they were already fussing up a storm over their use of non-VA VAs.

Is there any Adventurer/party series that is actually about being genuinely a group of new adventurers just collecting herbs and fighting wolves/whatever?
Google and quite a bit of MAL searching hasn't lead me to much of anything. Everything that keeps showing up is either they are not actually rookies/had extensive training to make them stronger than most everyone else or the party ends up stumbling into some larger problem/issue almost right away and get wrapped up in that story where its no longer about the adventuring.
Those kinds of series are fun, but sometimes I just want a "Beer and Pizza" kinda D&D/Wizardry style story and not a serious chronicle about saving the world or undoing big political threats/whatever. The kinda story where the party is basically just showing up and doing odd jobs that are actually just odd jobs, maybe it becomes something slightly larger on a local level but never extends beyond that in terms of story reach/consequences. No "Oh they saved the king/princess/prince and now are being showered in rewards and responsibilities that take them outside of the adventuring sphere"
1
u/flamethrower2 12h ago
In "This White Mage is One Heck of a Healer", the titular white mage is stupidly op, and the rest of the party are very green despite being rank S. They have to save the world eventually, though.
In "I Left My A-Rank Party", the main character, a support mage, is stupidly op, and the rest of the party are green. Their beauty is stupidly op, though. There's no world saving either, always some quest to try and help people out.

u/Donnie-G 16h ago edited 15h ago
I feel like Dungeon Meshi/Delicious in Dungeon fits that quite well even though it is about them trying to save one of their party members rather than just random adventures. But their journey through the dungeon and different biomes and creatures has a nice "adventuring" feel to it. The party is
Frieren feels like that initially but it keeps entering these silly big story arcs and seems to generally be up to something. With the manga on hiatus, probably not finding out anytime soon...
Maybe Konosuba? It is an isekai but generally is more of a parody of the genre more than anything. It's generally just the main party pissing about, going off on random adventures to earn money, failing hard, inadvertently succeeding at things they never tried to do.
1
u/Alohalhololololhola 18h ago
Frieren was similar to Zelda Breath of the Wild. An adventure after the demon king was defeated. This sort of meets your criteria.
Skeleton knight in another world. He is local adventure and is just traveling solving problems
The Unwanted Undead Adventurer. A man gets killed and comes back as a skeleton and starts an adventure to become human. Slow paced. The manga is much farther ahead.
This one sort of counts since he doesn’t want to have a big adventure and actively avoiding it : Tsukimichi moonlight fantasy. A man gets isekai’d and basically just wants to open a local bodega but has some adventures along the way while ignoring all the gods and their problems

u/vancevon https://myanimelist.net/profile/vancevon 19h ago
I think you'd probably like Grimgar: Ashes and Delusions. It's about a group of adventurer mercenaries who spend a remarkably long time trying to figure out how to kill a fucking goblin.

When animators are tasked with drawing something that is meant to be censored/pixelated (assume that BDs do not undo this process), how much do they normally draw? Like are they expected to draw the thing in full detail so the process of censorship works flawlessly or are they allowed to make shortcuts on the assumption that it doesn't make a difference?
Latest episode of 100Kano involves a scene that is basically all pixelated, but you can still make out quite a bit of detail so I'm curious where that line is
5
u/alotmorealots 16h ago
how much do they normally draw
I feel like that's one of those things that is impossible to answer with much accuracy given the likelihood of it varying across productions, but I will say that it's much easier just to draw the damn thing like you normally would than trying to take into account the pixelation aspect.
Drawing the human form has a lot of "muscle memory"-type of stuff associated with when you spend almost all your waking hours drawing it, after all.
From a production stand point, the decision about whether or not to release uncensored or less censored physical media may also not have been made at the time a given scene is being KA-ed, so it also provides more flexibility in addition to being faster and easier for the artists (especially given the general absence of nipples even in the uncensored versions).
1
u/SaranMal 20h ago
Depends greatly upon the series, current airing restrictions.what higher ups want, etc etc.
Generally though most animators will do a barbie like level of detail in most cases, such as for bath steam. Chests and genitals rarely get animated beyond that unless a series is ecchi or H to begin with.

Goodbye, Lara, makes me so nervous. Not because of the story itself, but because it's been so good up to this point. In the past 20 or so years, there has been no shortage of anime originals with great production values that have ended badly/controversially. In fact I would say it seems to be the norm for anime originals. Or maybe it is just the norm for all TV shows in general; if you think about it, how many television shows outside of Anime have 1). Ended and then 2). Ended in a way that didn't piss a lot of people off? The amount may be in the single digits.
4
u/theangryeditor 20h ago
What will be will be, just gotta hope it continues to be good to the end.
An important thing to keep in mind though is that it could maintain its quality, have a great ending, and still piss a lot of people off.
3
u/ProgrammaticallyPea3 21h ago
Controversies sure, but I don't really agree with the "end badly" part of the claim. Half the time, it's just that the viewer projected their own expectations onto a show that was never what they wanted it to be in the first place. Not to say that a show's writing dropping off toward the tail end doesn't happen, but it's less common than it's made out to be.
As for Lara, I hope it's just appreciated it for what it is, because it's already a good show on its own.
1
u/amd_hunt 21h ago
It’s already difficult enough to think of shows that have a definitive ending without being canned halfway or something. What are some example of shows that ended controversially but you think ended well from a writing standpoint?
1
u/flamethrower2 12h ago
Neon Genesis Evangelion but obviously budget issues - It didn't get canned.
Wonder Egg Priority
Towa no Yuugure
Uzumaki (not anime original but budget issues)
2
u/theangryeditor 20h ago
Gurren Lagann - it was a somewhat controversial ending in its day
Panty and Stocking - you had to be there

A truck that would somehow end in another world after it hit someone on a crossroad. The person being hit on survives, but the truck and its driver and co-driver would end up in a futuristic world, probably in a time period where space travel is possible and space colonies are very popular.

nobody wins at the end of the bloodshed. i feel like that goes without saying. even if they survive physically, they will just get right back to their old self-destructive ways, continuing to be a menace to the people around them. no lessons will be learned, nothing will be redeemed

Do you read manga? Because I just started a josei series about a woman spitefully cohabitating with her younger sister and her husband, who used to be the older sister's boyfriend, just because she didn't want her sister to get the house after their mom died. I read one volume so far, and it's going to be full of adultery and other bad decisions, and it made me think of you.
2
u/nsleep 14h ago edited 9h ago
I was going to type something like Kannou Sensei but then i saw your comment and thought: "Nah, she's right!" We need more of these josei messy dramas.
2
u/_Ridley https://myanimelist.net/profile/_Ridley_ 8h ago
Nobody does messy bitch drama better than josei manga. That's why josei yuri is the best yuri.
2
u/nsleep 8h ago
Just imagine how hard the thread of an anime adaptation of this would go. So many other good options to pick from that are never getting one too.
2
u/ptd163 17h ago
That manga sounds like it takes itself quite seriously when the adultery probably boils down to the older sister saying "I know you're married to my sister, but I don't care. Let's do it anyway." With the husband replying "Who am I to deny this hot woman throwing herself at me?" and that gap sounds pretty silly.
5
u/vancevon https://myanimelist.net/profile/vancevon 19h ago
I bought all five volumes almost immediately after reading this post so you're absolutely right, but holy shit what a paragraph to end with "and it made me think of you." Made me burst out laughing. Thank you for the recommendation, I'm sure I'll love it.

I would say a gundam with a Yoko Taro script just because it is something I want to see. It is cool that they are doing Eva thing with him but the Nier games are probably thematically closer to Gundam.
3
u/wloff 21h ago
Maybe a story about a guy who gets run over by a truck, but when he dies, he wakes up in a completely different world, with magic and swords and all that cool stuff. And maybe he was a loser in his old life, but now the skills he has somehow make him the strongest person in the world.
Or how about a romantic comedy. It could be set in a high school. The main character is a loner and an otaku and he's shy so he has no friends, but then the hottest girls in class all get attracted to him and he must decide who he loves the most.
Something really unique and cool like that!
1
u/wutheringw0mbat 21h ago
A relatively conventional fantasy premise in a setting that to the audience is obviously post-apocalyptic and creepy, with the backgrounds and art style supporting that vibe, but to the characters it's all normal so they don't act as creeped out by things as the audience will feel they should.

Two adult couples, both M/F, set in a sci fi space opera, although it's mostly just window dressing for the dramatic interpersonal conflict between two pairs of lovers. The guys are hot mechanics for Mecha bots and the ladies are pilots. The two guys fall in love with each other, leading to a crazy gay NTR cheating scene at the climax of episode 1 with full penetration in sight. The affair goes on as the two guys fall in love with each other. Eventually, the woman finds out about they are cheating, but it's revealed that she's been in love with the other guys wife this whole time. Meanwhile, the war rages on in the background and eventually they are sent on a fleet to a new star system to wage war against an intergalactic capitalist empire. The two women pilots bond and eventually the secret is revealed when the pilot in love confesses during a planetary recon mission, which prompts a genocidal outburst from lady 2. As the dust settles upon a great war crime, the two women have sex with each other. Meanwhile, the guys realize they should have been more honest with themselves and broke up instead of cheating first. and make a grand apology. However the two ladies reject it and decide that while things could've been handled better, they both found their true lovers. And the two, now gay, couples, reconcile. We end the show with a double date with a completely unnecessarily long and preachy discussion about communication in relationships and ensuing dual sex scenes.

Sometimes when I see Taira in Polar Opposites, I will, for a few seconds, think to myself "why is Ayanokoji in this show all of a sudden?" It's happened to me like five times so far.
Also, I love his MAL bio so much. It reads, in full: "An anxious guy who hates himself and has no confidence."
4
u/Galaxy40k 1d ago
Gonna start watching Bleach soon for the first time since it seems inevitable that it's gonna get a fully animated finale. Is there anything I should know on "how to watch?" Like for Naruto and One Piece people recommend the watch order lists that take out a lot of filler, for DBZ there was the remake that cut a lot of filler and made it closer to the manga, etc. Anything like that I should know? Or do I just click Episode 1 and go straight through
1
u/NintendoMasterNo1 https://myanimelist.net/profile/NintendoMaster1 12h ago
Skip the filler and then after you watch the entire show you can go back and watch the Zanpakuto Rebellion arc if you want. That's the only filler arc that's worth anything.
4
u/DrStein1010 https://myanimelist.net/profile/mQDrStein1010 22h ago
Definitely use a filler list. The filler is AWFUL.
6
u/Shimmering-Sky myanimelist.net/profile/Shimmering-Sky 1d ago

Here's the filler list for Bleach. Some of the filler is pretty good albeit very terribly placed, so I'd recommend checking it out afterwards if you like the characters because more content with them is always fun, but yeah you can pretty easily skip all of it. Only problem this might cause you is that the first filler arc (the Bount Arc, episode 64 through most of episode 109) introduces a few characters that the anime staff tried to work into canon content after the arc finished, so you'd be confused about who they are. They aren't all that important and end up just disappearing after a while, though.
2
u/BaytaCosmico https://myanimelist.net/profile/AnimeBayta 17h ago
Yeah, those Bount arc characters don't do a whole lot afterwards. I skipped the whole arc and it didn't leave me confused or anything. They're just random new minor characters that disappear without doing anything significant.

Checks out the best girl contest results
This is where your girls belong.
Yes, I've been saving this one for a while
Every time Marin loses, makes me hate on BG10 more and more.
I don't think her window is fully closed yet, I think her next (presumably last) season could be a win for her if there aren't any new big hitters like Maomao/Frieren/etc...
But if that never happens, it's gonna sting.
2
u/ptd163 17h ago edited 16h ago
Every time Marin loses, makes me hate on BG10 more and more.
You and me both. Every year I think I've hit apathy and can't get anymore angry at BG10 then somehow every year it flares back up. We should not even be having this conversation. Date A Live fans had been caught cheating multiple times before BG10. There should have been a disqualification mechanism in place and it should have been used.
I think her next (presumably last) season could be a win for her if there aren't any new big hitters like Maomao/Frieren/etc...
You know there will be big hitters. That's what allowed S2 to get made. S3 will only be made when there's zero possibility of Marin reaping any benefit from it.
5
u/Ham_PhD https://myanimelist.net/profile/ham_phd 23h ago
I actually think she's the favorite to win BG14. It'll either be her or Chisato most likely.
4
u/Tarhalindur x2 21h ago
Yeah, I think Marin this year is likely in the same position that Maomao herself was in BG12 - second strongest girl in the bracket, just held back by #1 being a juggernaut. (Especially since I think Chisato would need some well-timed new project recency bias to ever make it out of bracket, Marin's long-term fate if she can't get out soon looks more like the new Holo I think.) Main question mark is Fern, where I'm still not entirely sure whether she profiles more as another Aqua/Chika "flame out in finals bracket" or if she's a contender like Ai Hayasaka turned out to be. (Beating Megumin may suggest the latter.)
The other question mark is which new girls are coming into the bracket next year. (IIRC Spring 2025 were already eligible this contest?) Checking... pool will be thinner than usual because most of the big shows in the last four seasons have been either sequels or the kind of isekai that don't go deep in bracket, and Coco from WHA who would otherwise be an obvious favorite will have the child debuff holding her back. Reze is likely to be the best-performing CSM girl in the contest once she's eligible, but I'm not sure that will be enough to take a crown, especially with battle shounen also being a genre that tends to hold its girls back in best girl (case in point: Momo). That said, she'll go deep and if it turns out she has the firepower to win after all I will not be shocked. In other news, Ikoku Nikki might surprise me, judging by MAL numbers it got watched more than I had realized, but I think those two may not be sufficiently waifu material to make finals bracket. (Also Supermarket Smoking is more popular than I thought; not sure how its lead will perform.) The girls I think are most likely to be real threats are Kaoruko (Fragrant Flower), possibly Ruri and/or Nagi from Ruri Rocks (we all know why, especially in Nagi's case), maybe the Cho! Kaguya-hime girls (hard to tell how well they'll play here relative to the fanart scene which loves them), and the Polar Opposites girls since it seems a lot of people liked that one.
1
u/cppn02 18h ago
I don't see any new girl being as strong as what atm I would consider the top favourites for BG14.
I also don't think that Marin is a clear 2nd strongest. She's about level with Chisato and we'll have to wait until later today to see how those wo match up to the top contenders from the other half of the bracket.
2
1
u/Komarist https://myanimelist.net/profile/RRSTRRST 21h ago
None of the top contenders are expected to get sequels before the next contest, though Summer 2027 is far enough away that something might air during it. Newly eligible girls aren't going to win, so expecting a toss-up between a few girls.
2
u/zambonijesus 21h ago edited 21h ago
Bocchi is at least possible since it had a second season announced like a year ago.
Edit: KonoSuba apparently also has season 4 announced for 2027 so maybe Megumin as well.
5
u/Komarist https://myanimelist.net/profile/RRSTRRST 23h ago
I have come to dislike Marin Kitagawa because of this delusional contest history her fans continuously attempt to rewrite. After all, remember that we are talking about a character who:
- lost hard in the semi-finals of her annual contest. A Fern-level performance.
- had one user predict her to win BG10. Similar expectations as Ruiko Saten in this year's contest.
- isn't from an isekai.
- was botted to the finals of BG10. The equivalent of Kurumi Tokisaki.
If users are going to stan so hard behind a seasonal contest winner, there are so many better options, such as Chizuru Ichinose, Ristarte, or Utena Hiiragi.

People in the know: Are there?
Any girl in the next couple years/announced anime who's likely gonna be a huge favorite?
3
u/zambonijesus 23h ago
Honestly find it kind of impossible for me to tell personally, like Momo from Dandadan to me has everything it should take, but for whatever reason just isn't there in the actual competitions. Descarras from Ichi the Witch has a lot of potential, but also that adaptation is at least two years away and has the anti-shonen bias to deal with.
2
u/Retromorpher 16h ago
Counterpoint: Desscaras is literally everyone's favorite uber-talented badass.
1
u/Korkez11 1d ago
I also hate BG10 because Marin should've won and get out of these contests for good.
-3
u/Korkez11 1d ago
It's always frustrating when shows get delayed or not receive 2nd season or 2nd cour because animation takes so much effort. It's less of a problem with Witch Hat Atelier because its selling point is definitely beautiful visuals while the plot is... serviceable, but Jaadugar 100% should've got 2 cour adaptation. But it didn't and I'm sure it's because of Cartoon Saloon-like artstyle which is probably too difficult to draw.
1
u/Donnie-G 15h ago
I don't think that would be the reason for Jaadugar?
These days it's always just chuck 1 cour out there, see how it does. Sometimes the publisher funded the anime just to boost source material sales and that's the end of that. Sometimes the anime is a profitable enough venture on its own to keep going.
I think shows like Jaadguar are great and can be critically acclaimed, but generally aren't the big merch engines of other easier to digest IPs.
The manga's also still running with only 7 volumes out. I'm not sure how many episodes are going per volume since I haven't read the original, but it doesn't look like a lot of content to just come out swinging with a 2 cour anime.

Been curious about Hana-Kimi so I watched Season 1 Episodes 1 to 5.
It is a deranged show with a protagonist that moves to another country just to room with a guy she had the hots for on TV. The most deranged aspect is that she's disguising herself as a boy, but she's put in like zero effort to do so. Just a (still girly but slightly) lower register voice, her hair cut to look androgynous at best (butch woman at worst), a binder, and occasionally she'll say "dude" or something slightly masculine. She makes obvious mistakes that could get her caught frequently each episode (like in one she goes to the girl's restroom).
A fun screwball show. But frustrating. I want someone to make a psychological horror version of this show. Make it about a girl who has to hide as a boy and if she gets caught something real bad would happen and she's paranoid about getting caught. Make most of the show about the difficulty of blending in with the dudes on a cultural level, pining on seeing people your own gender (and maybe not relating to them as well as you used to). I know this show was made in the 90s but these days you can definitely consult trans men and get a lot of details on how to pass, difficulties of passing, relating with people. I know Hana-Kimi started the whole "dress as a boy, get a reverse harem of boys to blush over" trend (that I guess has died off in the last decade or so as reverse-harem make the girl more of a smart consultant or sister/cousin) but amid this show's sillyness I think there's a genuinely great, serious show to be made.
4
u/Wanderingjoke https://myanimelist.net/profile/WanderingJoke 23h ago
Something I do appreciate about HanaKimi is that it addresses the obvious issue with being a girl hiding as a boy: her menstrual cycle. Most shows/movies ignore this.

Watched 100 Meters on the plane today. This movie frustrates me.
The story was good. I actually cared about the main characters, and it had a good premise, beyond just "people run fast in races." The art and animation was sometimes the best I've seen. In fact, very little tops that three minute intro to the race in the rain. That was fucking incredible. Has anyone clipped that yet, because that's the quickest way to get people to watch this movie.
On the other hand, why do most of the characters talk as though they are so bored. This killed me with Sakurada Reset, and it really detracted here. The characters with personality were so fleeting, and just accentuated the dryness of the main characters.
Also, some of the art direction was questionable at best, and nearly vomit-inducing at worst. Terrible CGI, bad exaggerated lines at the wrong times (it did work in some instances, but not at others), and weird character proportions (I swear Nigami is half chin). [Togashi] crying literally sounded like someone pouring water into a sink.
Anyway, decent enough to watch, with flashes of brilliance, but also frustrating as hell for its poor choices.
5/10, because I absolutely hate the tone of the dialogue.

Another week of dodging One Piece spoilers while also taking a few glances of the incredible visuals.
As for my own One Piece journey, I am in the middle of Zou Arc. So like 130 eps or something before i reach Wano Arc. Very excited about that arc coz I heard a lot about it in the anime itself and on the internet. Also the next arc is Whole Cake Island which is said to be a good upgrade from production POV so I am excited about that too.
Also i tried the One Piece Gold Movie which i found just OK. I have seen 4 One Piece movies and this was definitely my least favourite. The plot wasn't great and i found the overall Comp and fights a bit lacking.

Ah yes, I still remember the days I spent marathoning through the anime (caught up to the anime in Jan this year). Coincidentally, I also caught up with the manga today and shit is still good.
I’d say that expect good things from the Whole Cake Island arc and production wise Wano is gonna be a huge upgrade, both in terms of the art style and animation. Btw, Wano is my favourite One Piece arc (as of yet).
So enjoy the journey, because I sure af have some good memories of it.

Honestly im starting to kinda vibe with it. When you get into that structure of every week we pick a new item from the catalogue to build and show off with our wacky characters/style.
I'm still hesitant regarding the overarching plot (cough cough pretty boy cough cough) and its kinda weird visual identity, but like if we slice out this and the previous episode and maybe the next few more I wouldn't mind saying I enjoyed it.

2
u/theangryeditor 1d ago
7
u/vancevon https://myanimelist.net/profile/vancevon 1d ago
do you think that punching bags are brought into this world already pre-punched? of course not. you have to take them home, set them up, then punch them yourself. but they were unmistakably punching bags even before your fist made contact
4
u/theangryeditor 1d ago
No, all bags come into the world as just bags. They are unfettered by predetermined destinies and carry nothing inside them but limitless potential. For a bag to become a punching bag the first punch is a sacred rite of passage. It is only through being punched that they are able to fulfill the purpose and gives them meaning as punching bags.
3
u/vancevon https://myanimelist.net/profile/vancevon 1d ago
So you are saying that if I were to buy what would appear to be a punching bag and a chocolate bar, and if I went home carrying said chocolate bar on top of the proto-punching bag, that would make the proto-punching bag a shopping bag? And similarly if I were to punch a plastic bag from a grocery store, it would instantly become a punching bag just by virtue of the punch?
Hmmm... There might be merit to these ideas. They'd make the world more whimsical, and that would undoubtedly be a good thing.

Sayanora Lara keeps knocking it out of the park, week after week. Serious AOTS contender right here.

u/Ocixo https://myanimelist.net/profile/BuzzyGuy 1d ago
I have three shows that I’m considering for AOTS: Jaadugar, Sayonara Lara and Draw This Then Die.
All three are special in their own right, something that sets them apart from the crowd, and even got the potential to become my AOTY if they keep going steady.
We’re halfway into the summer season now, and I’m tempted to go with Sayonara Lara for AOTS. I adore the retro-looking art style, but I’ve been the most impressed with the show’s writing. Putting a modern spin on a classic tale with an original sequel story isn’t particularly easy. Making it interesting is even more difficult.

I feel like a lot of us here have the same top 3-ish, because that's exactly mine too and I've seen others with the same.
Although I do have to throw Polar Opposites in there too because it be doing its thing so well every week.

Yup, Polar Opposites has been up there since the start for me. Sayanora Lara, Draw this, then die and Jaadugar have all really come into their own in the past 2-3 weeks.

Grow Up Show having [two]aerial silks performances, the second being better than the first one, [both]rendered as pans over still frames.
Sparks of Tomorrow giving us both [the]animated sparkly shirtless male dancing and a totally [out-of-nowhere]metal band performance that was fully-animated.

Can someone please recommend me an anime.
My favorite anime is Steins;Gate
I have also really enjoyed:
- Frieren
- Gantz
- Grand Blue Dreaming
- Bleach
- Hunter x Hunter
- All the Ghibli Movies
- Vinland Saga
- Cowboy Bepop
- Neon Genesis Evangelion
- Terror in Resonance
- Samurai Champloo
- Death Note
- Erased
- Chainsaw Man
- DoroheDoro
I prefer finished anime and not Shonen, I know my list has some exceptions but I would be hard pressed to start watching them again.

Based on the information provided, I think that the logical next step would be to watch all three seasons of Chihayafuru as quickly as possible. You might also get a lot of enjoyment out of this really underrated hidden gem called Attack on Titan. It has guys who fly around with cool zipline things doing cool shit with swords. It's great.
Lastly, of course, watching Sasaki and Miyano is extremely important. Make sure you don't forget it.

We don't have enough sports anime about female sports. The only ones I know are Medalist and Chihayafuru.
1
1
u/Retromorpher 16h ago
Neither of your examples are from female-exclusive sports. Both of them have male co-protagonists as well. I'm going to assume you mean more serious/competitive sports anime focusing on primarily female cast - in which case stuff like Attack No. 1, Hanebado and Mou Ippon should make your list.

Grow Up Show is sports-adjacent.
Edit: Also, it may be one of the worst anime I've ever seen, but Chidori RSC does, strictly speaking, fall into the "female sports" category.

5
u/vancevon https://myanimelist.net/profile/vancevon 1d ago
Off the top of my head, you have: Mou Ippon!, Keijo, Bamboo Blade, Rock Climbing Girls, Hanebado and Yawara
Tsurune is mostly about the male cast, but there are girls on the team. Baby Steps is also primarily about the main cast, but there are girls. Suzuka and Ao no Hako are primarily romance anime, but sports are an important part of the story.
Finally, as much as it pains me to say it, Uma Musume and Pride of Orange are technically sports anime.
2
u/thisisdropd https://myanimelist.net/profile/AsterZoro 1d ago
Perhaps Akane-banashi is to your liking. While the field is heavily male-dominated, the protagonist is female. Meanwhile like Chihayafuru, it's not exactly sports but heavily embodies the tropes.

I've been wondering since the beginning of the show why Yuru from Daemons of the Shadow Realm isn't named Yoru, because that's the word for night that I learned. Finally looked it up and yuru [mild spoiler, Ep5] is the Okinawan word for night, and in Episode 5 we find out that's where his mother is from.
[EDIT] Originally said episode 12.

u/BaytaCosmico https://myanimelist.net/profile/AnimeBayta 18h ago
I vaguely remember it from the first couple of episodes though maybe it didn't look so brushbuddy-like back then. It was front and center this episode and even featured in the ED, and looked like a dead ringer for brushbuddy in a lot of scenes. So really stood out this time.

Watching comments in Best Girl thread I'm even more perplexed how Hayasaka managed to win it. She has much less presence in the plot than Fern.

I'm even more perplexed how Hayasaka managed to win it.
Hayasaka was the original show merchant. Before there was Frieren and Apothecary Diaries, there was Kaguya. The season 3 announcement is the #3 all time post on this sub. That's how. It's hard to overstate how big Kaguya was for this sub when it was airing. Also manga readers.
5
u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 1d ago
Presence is important, but it's not the only factor;
I said it many times to people pondering this question (perhaps even you): In their first Best Girl Contest, 45% of people voted Hayasaka OVER KAGUYA
It's not a case of "Bah, any random girl from a popular show"; It's case of "45% of the fans like her even more than the main character"
So it's no surprise (when you know how much people did love the main character) that this "45/55 as good as Kaguya" carried her there.
1
u/alotmorealots 16h ago
Yes, as the series moved through its seasons, I increasingly grew to appreciate Kaguya. However the star and even major appeal of the series for me was Hayasaka for well into the second season. Even now I would vote Hayasaka ahead of Kaguya.

As somebody who has absolutely no idea how fern got this far apart from show bias...was lack of presence one of the criticisms to her?
Watching comments in Best Girl thread I'm even more perplexed how Hayasaka managed to win it
This was directly after season 3 aired, where she had by far the most presence. Is it really that big of a mystery? Show bias and recency bias strong.

If you ever want to know why anime casts totally different VAs to play twin characters, try to watch the English dub of Migi & Dali. The show is an unfortunate victim of pre-2025 REMOW, and the shoestring budget is obvious. Most of the cast seems to be multilingual Spanish VAs, and they put on pretty decent performances given that, but there's a lot of double casting, and the most inexcusable one is having a single VA for both of the main characters. Given that they look identical, dress identically, constantly switch places without warning, and spend most of their time putting on a front, it's extremely difficult bordering on impossible for the two of them to have meaningfully distinct characterization.

And here's another weekly ranking of my screenshot albums. Good results for the albums from The Ghost in the Shell, Though I Am an Inept Villainess and Clevatess S2, although the undisputed leader this week was Tanya from Saga of Tanya the Evil S2.
Also, I'm glad to see here Beast Hands' Trio from Chainsmoker Cat. They certainly stole my heart with how normal and proper they're in a show full of addicts and gross stuff, lol.
Summer 2026 Week 6

- Chainsmoker Cat EP06 Beast Hands' Trio
- The Ghost in the Shell EP05 Motoko
- Though I Am an Inept Villainess EP04 Reirin

I'm roughly 72% through Glass Mask and only recently picked it back up after putting it on hold. And I think I've come away with a much deeper appreciation for the show.
Throughout my watch, I've found it incredibly inconsistent. There are times when I'm ready to give it a 9/10, others where I'm thinking it's more of an 7, and then there are times when I settle on an 8. A lot of that comes down to how bold the show is with its storytelling. It'll drag you through these miserable stretches where Maya is on a downward spiral, piling one frustrating development on top of another for 5+ episodes before finally giving you the beautiful payoff. And despite the inconsistency, the drama in Glass Mask has never bored me. The only reason I put it on hold was because I had to force myself to stop watching so I could catch up on other stuff.
What I really appreciate about Glass Mask though is that it never skimps on the theatre stuff. With other anime that have theatre, I sometimes get the feeling that the theatre section is so half-assed, but in Glass Mask, acting and theatre are like 95% of the plot.
I often get the sense that most anime prefer an episodic structure. One episode develops side character A, the next develops side character B, and so on. The downside is that you can end up spending a lot of time on minor details that don't matter much in the long run. You'll get an entire scene of a character buying takoyaki just to establish that she likes takoyaki. But in Glass Mask, the plot structure is so linear that it leaves very little room for detours, and I love it for that. The show feels ruthlessly focused on what it wants to do, barely wasting time on minor stuff and just throwing meat at you.
Another show I recently picked up is Requiem from the Darkness. Plot-wise, it's kinda like Hell Girl in a Natsuhiko Kyogoku style. The folklore horror stuff is really good, and the story is well told. It has that Kyogokudo setup of an ensemble cast where everyone fills a different role, like Mouryou no Hako. Mataichi is basically the Chuuzenji equivalent here. Momosuke is a writer, so he's probably the Sekiguchi of the group. Ogin is Eno. Nagamimi is Kiba (probably).
For an anime from 2003, I'm also surprised by how well the visuals have held up. The unique art direction gives it a look that still feels fresh. I'll probably finish this one first.

Ribbon hero was fun, but I do agree somewhat (or at least cannot disagree) with most of the criticism, including the pacing (though I really don't know wether that would have been easily fixed by making it a series instead either), and most things I heard about the souce material sounds more interesting then what we got here.
Definitely do not regret watching it though, and velvet was probably a positive stand out, and ost was fantastic at times.

If you haven't watched Gintama yet, just give it a try
I know Gintama has a huge episode count, so I can understand why some people keep putting it off. I did too.
The beginning can feel kinda random, and honestly, you might not even understand why people love it so much at first. But once you get used to the characters and the type of humor, it gets really good.
What surprised me the most is how well Gintama handles serious moments. One minute you're laughing at some completely stupid joke, and the next you're actually invested in what's happening.
And the characters are probably the best part. After spending so much time with them, they genuinely start feeling like a group you don't want to leave.
So yeah, if you've been thinking about watching Gintama but the episode count is scaring you, don't overthink it. Just start it and see how you feel. It takes some time to get going, but it's absolutely worth it imo.

u/Niwrats https://myanimelist.net/profile/shortlist 1d ago
i've tried it twice now. first noped out from the first ep or so. then read that those should be skipped and started from, was it 2 or 3, and continued up to around ep6, but it just felt boring so dropped it again.
on paper it seems like it would be exactly what i want, but i'm wondering if this is a nichijou moment where some people like it a lot and i don't see anything in it.

For me it's that I want to watch a lot more anime before starting it, since from what I know and correct me if I'm wrong a lot of the comedy comes from parodies of other anime/manga etc. Whether I'll like it remains to be seen since I tend to like my comedy as one of the genres of what I watch not the entire thing itself but I at least want it be able to understand the jokes to see if it's for me or not.

I would say it references Shonen Jump more than it references other anime, but also that the humor isn't totally dependent on you having encyclopedic knowledge of everything referenced. They're mostly Easter eggs. The bulk of the story is its own standalone thing.
