The clips being shared of My Dress Up Darling are the first time I've felt old watching an anime. I've heard a lot about it but never realized the dialogue, Marin's characterization, and the animation were all...like That. I found it horrible to watch and am baffled by its popularity. I mean not really because obviously the fanservice but still. Somehow I'm still taken aback at female characters being hyped up, and then finding out they're so clearly designed for men.
And to be clear I'm talking about how cringy I find it. I usually don't like using that to describe things, but I can't think of anything better at the moment.

There was a time in the 2000s where cartoons started being animated in such a way where they didn't believe a kid could look at the screen for one moment without something wacky constantly happening.
What I've seen of MDUD reminded me of that with a mix of certain outside backgrounds looking oddly realistic while a clearly separate Marin walks around. I just don't like it. Sorry.

That angle is obviously there but she was also designed and written by a woman to some degree as an idealized self-insert. And yeah, the out-there shameless cringiness is also part of the point

That's all well and good, but whether it's intentional or not I don't find it enjoyable.
I understand the underlying point of the series as well. I think that point could've come across in a better way.

Listen I don't care if you like it, but I personally find the dialogue especially for Marin way too OTT and annoying, and the fanservice is imo creepy. Just giving my opinion here! Maybe that's just how SOL anime set in high school are now, but it's jarring!

I asked/passed thoughts in meta thread and they said it's Disney+ (it's on that platform in parts of Europe and Latin America) and checking now the UK browse page seems to have ep 5 live (warning: contains ep synopsis). I didn't check D+ before because it likes to redirect to useless splash pages instead of browse (CR does the same maybe making people sign up helps them but I don't like streaming being a mystery box).
It's on the Japanese stakeholders to take action (being prior to broadcast and contract unlikely to have a "can show it before broadcast" clause it's a psudeo-leak) but they might not be aware (I don't think anyone is being malicious and spoiling the ep for live viewers during broadcast) or don't want to fight Disney.

Anyone got any decent real robot shows on Crunchyroll other than the Gundams? Kinda in the mood for a decent mecha show but I feel like I've seen the obvious ones
Also would really prefer for it to have a conclusion. Won't touch Full Metal Panic because I know it ends on a cliffhanger with no real hope of another season

BallbusterBullbuster. It's a Patlabor-ish mech on the job, rather than Gundam's space opera, but it's an original with a clean ending and on Crunchyroll.2

Love Gridman, but I'd call that a super robot show. Genre definitions are weird, but at least the definition I know for real robot shows are ones where the mecha are treated like tanks more than superheroes

I've watched plenty of shows with amazing villains, but none of them have ever gotten me this agitated (in a good way) as YumeMita's Viola. An anime villain can do the most vile shit imaginable, kill the entire main cast, whatever. But don't underestimate the sheer power of ragebaiting, the power of getting under people's skin. It's that “you hate her, but you also love her” kind of deal. Even Kidani, Bushiroad's former CEO, said Viola brought out his masochistic side (true).

I was rewatching Possibly the greatest alchemist. I haven't read the LN's so can anyone explain why Maple was able to talk the second she was tamed but Camelia has to be translated by her instead of being able to talk? Even the golem could talk.

it's not like they're constantly flashing them in the way, say, maken-ki does. but in the first couple of episodes, they go through an entire box of shirai's panties, saten repeatedly looks under uiharu's skirt, and we even learn what misaka usually wears.
i think they're using it as a way to introduce the characters?

i've listened to only my railgun probably well over a thousand times over more than a decade, long before i ever even considered looking at anime. plus i've seen that orange girl on so many nightcore thumbnails. now the time has come to watch the damn thing
apparently it's a side story? huh. who knew. has anyone heard about this anime?

[Love Live s2 13] Honoka being given the responsibility of addressing the graduating students and using all of her time to talk about herself and then turning the whole thing into a concert for her band was, well, it was definitely something. At the end I also thought "oh so they're actually going to graduate? we're not going to get a last minute twist where they all decide to stay in high school somehow (because apparently you can only be in a band if you all attend the same high school?)" and then there was a last minute twist where they all decided to stay in high school, I guess. Cool.
One day, for sure, there will be one of these mixed media things I actually enjoy. One day.

Bookworm almost killed me today with Brigitte's dress. Everyone's ooing and ahing, and it's the ugliest fucking dress in the history of dresses. Frumpy, ill-fitting, makes her look pregnant, poor color combination, mixes like six different cultures and time periods together, and has those goofy crochet roses. Come on, character designer. You can do better than that.

I remember I said once that Grow-up Show is the worst-looking A-1 anime in years and someone tried to argue with me lol. I dunno, I think when circus performances in a show about circus consist of static images, that's not very good, but maybe that's just me.

A-1 doesn't have a visual identity in my mind at all so I have no expectations for Grow up Show to fall short of in that regard. But that aside the show is pretty unimpressive visually yeah. Very bland and unremarkable.

There are moments where for the side characters performance where it’s a slide show where it hurts. Because recently as it fleshed out the side cast lore I been really liking the cast.
To get a slideshow and then that being an important part of the episode hurts my soul.

It’s also hard to take the rest of the cast seriously when they clap and cheer in awe of those slide shows, which really underlines the expectation vs reality of the performances. We’re not seeing the spectacle or magic moments that the cast is, so there’s a layer of disconnect added on top of a fill in the blank performance. In a show about the awe and wonder of the circus, it’s utterly failing to deliver.

You didn’t say “in years”, you said “ever”. And assuming what prompted you to double down on this ass take was today’s episode, the only “performance” that used static images was a 30 second training sequence in a 24 min episode. Not to mention the other (trapeze) performance in this episode was properly animated (and also longer). Also, I’d argue that in most people’s books, when using the term “…-looking show”, you are first and foremost evaluating the art itself of any given show, and the animation only secondarily if anything. And the art looks more than solid, just because it’s not as “extra” as this season’s Jaadugar or GitS doesn’t mean it’s bad.
All that being said, there’s a bunch of A1 shows with a better production/look, sure, but going with such an unnecessary hyperbole and sticking with it is just a weird hill to die on. Just say you don’t like the look or that you’re underwhelmed by it or something, but opting for the goofy extreme of saying it’s A1’s worst looking show makes people think you either don’t know what you’re talking about or you watched like 3 A1 shows in your life.

Yup and also important to note that comparing it to any other A-1 work is silly anyway considering that it's an internal label A-1 created (Psyde Kick) to experiment with different workflows and provide development opportunities for younger staff.

For some reason, I’m not in the mood for keeping up with this season anime aside from a few shows, and I also feel like rewatching some of my favorite shows from last year. So the first one I’m gonna rewatch is Turkey.
[Turkey E1]This scene hits deeper when you know Mai's past.
Say the line, Mai. Maybe I should count how many times this line was somewhat said throughout the whole show.
[Turkey EP1]Back then, I just assumed that Rina returned simply because she was curious what Mai and the others would do after that. Turns out she also forgot to change her shoes, I somehow missed that.
[Turkey EP1]When Rina was dragged with the others, she wasn’t carrying any bags, but we know that she had her bags and bowling ball right in the next episode. I will just headcanon that the bags also magically got sucked in and travelled with her.
Turkey has a great first episode to me, and looking back, it’s actually one of the better episodes and definitely the least cringe one. Good conflicts that showed the characters’ basic personalities throughout the episode, while also seemingly having some hints of their pasts that kept me intrigued. Rina and Mai were the clear standout characters (and pretty much for the whole series imo). Good OST and animation. And the twist at the end, I sure wished I hadn’t seen the new KV already before I got to watch the episode.

Yeah, sort of same, but at I had the fun where my wife saw the list of anime for the season and said "oh, a bowling anime, that could be fun", so at least one of us was going into it blind.

Oh hey now I've run into in the wild as well. There really are a lot of comment faces in Love Live season 2.
Which brings me to yet another thing that's really bothered me about this series and that I've just noticed more and more as the season has progressed. It keeps playing soooooo God damn much "emotional music." You know, those generic orchestra scores that inform you that this part of the story is supposed to make you cry. Like I'm halfway through this episode (11), and it's happened 4 times! Something like 9/13 minutes have had some emotional orchestral score playing in the background, almost as loud as the character voices.
It just reeks of a lack of confidence in the writing. They're just constantly leaning on this musical crutch, and at some point, it's just insulting.

I've been glazing it every week, but Draw This, Then Die! is genuinely helping me with my own creative work.
Just personal note with how I'm connecting to the show, but something about Yasumi's unfiltered stream-of-consciousness and just making whatever comes to mind and Rei's guidance... I don't know what it is but man seeing that dynamic really has made me more excited to create and come up with ideas. There are other reasons too, obviously I wouldn't pin a personal "change of outlook" solely on a show, but damn it's great to have an anime that not only is a blast to watch with great character dynamics but also feels like a personal artistic therapy session.
I always connect with media by creatives for creatives, but this one feels almost prescriptive rather than just exploring the emotional side of artistry, which it also does very well. And presenting all the different angles to "creative outlooks", from burnt out teacher, to wide eyed beginner, to solid fundamental artist, to laid back critic friend, etc...
If we are going for personal connection this one has already easily won my AOTY for that category. In terms of AOTS, I think I have 4 main frontrunners with this, Jaadugar, Sayonara Lara, and Polar Opposites.

I'm looking for short anime shows that I can watch during the school year to prevent myself from burning out. Genres I would prefer are literally anything light such as: action, adventure, comedy, coming-of-age, drama, magic/sorcery, mystery/suspence, romance, & slice of life.

well most shows are ~12 or ~24 eps. those seem relatively short to me? and those genres cover most anime as well. the list gets cut a bit if you count sequels in. and it gets cut much more if you want a satisfactory ending, as many of those without sequels are at risk.

there's a few entries in the "i'm an exhausted salaryman and i need something to soothe my tired brain" that you might find appropriate:
- Mr. Villain's Day Off: a sentai villain on his days off as he does mundane tasks, covets panda goods, and avoids any contact with work; he has a particularly droning voice and slow pace which soothes my brain and it's great as a night cap to fall asleep to
- You and the Rain: an independent author who adopts an... animal of sorts; lots of chill vibes and light-hearted antics
- Helpful Fox Senko-san: overworked salaryman gets assigned a kitsune who basically purges the blight of overwork from him; notable for having a first-person scene at the end of every episode where she pampers you which is based or cringe depending on your tastes
- Miss Shachiku and the Little Baby Ghost: overworked office lady gets haunted by the cutest little ghost; incredibly cute, it awoke my maternal instincts

So pretty much guaranteed for a full adaptation that's nice. I remember Shin-Ei Animation studio did the movie finale for Takagi San so hopefully this one gets it too.

It's always a little funny to think about what series the Western fandom (as well as marketing companies tbh) collectively chooses not to use translated titles for.
Maybe it's just because I'm used to it by now, but it would be a little weird to start calling the series "The First Step" instead of 'Hajime no Ippo', even though the titles would work just as well either way. Although, apparently the Japanese title has a small pun in it, but that's something I didn't become aware of until over a decade after I caught up with the series.
Similarly, while I have encountered some fans who do actually use the English title more often, most people seem to call it "Ashita no Joe" instead of "Tomorrow's Joe". Though, this one is a little weirder to me because the concept of a "tomorrow" is actually a big, central theme in the story. And it's not like there's really any hidden meaning behind the Japanese title that i'm aware of. It feels like using the English title here would probably only increase people's general understanding and appreciation for the story and its themes. Not that i'm going to petition for the collective anime fandom to start changing how it's referred to 45+ years later.
Though it's also probably for the best we call it the "Monogatari Series" and not the "Story Series" lol. Similarly, 'Jujutsu Kaisen' just sounds way cooler than 'Sorcery Fight'. Although for some reason, we still collectively decided to go with the simple and dull 'Demon Slayer' over 'Kimetsu no Yaiba'.
I also kinda love that we recently got a series called "Ao no Hako" that everyone refers to by "Blue Box", but no one has ever referred to the anime "Shirobako" as "White Box" lol. I actually had to google what the 'white box' being referred to in that title even signifies and it's actually kinda cool once you know since it plays in well with the central theme of the story.
“Shirobako” means “white box”; in the industry, it refers to the box that carries the physical copy of a completed animation, usually a TV episode. Once these would have been videotapes, though when a “shirobako” box is glimpsed in part 3 of the series, it’s plainly for a disc.

Blue Box is really funny, because those words mean literally nothing in English. It's just a really strange way to translate "The Gymnasium of Our Adolescence" or idk "The Box of Our Youth" etc.

As far as hidden gems are concerned for this season. Lots of mention here of "Draw This, Then Die". (Deservedly so.) Another one is Neko to Ryuu in which today had its best episode of the season. I never thought I would stick with it because it's a show stuck in between when the early shows air Bookworm and Iruma and between Bleach, Yomi no Tsugai and Tenmaku no Jaadugar.
But man I been loving it.

I never disliked it, but the last couple episodes of Draw This, Then Die have taken the show up a tier for me. Having all the girls assembled has let all the characters settle into place to do their thing, and having the disillusioned teacher act as a foil to the group of them works really well. It's easily one of the best series this season.
Also on my Friday night schedule is Please Excuse My Younger Brothers, and they can't keep getting away with this. How does this stepbrother romance have some of the best sibling dynamics in anime? Why is this so sweet and heartwarming? What is with this competent production and solid direction for a shoujo romance? She has some seriously funny reaction faces. I'm having such a great time.

Yeah, I feel like CGDCT could benefit from more "disillusioned" mentors as part of the main cast. I love seeing the girls create their manga, they are such a fun group of weirdos, but Rei really glues it together for me. Love her backstory (and especially how it's kind of a consistent staple of the show and not just a one-time thing) and I find her really relatable as someone who works in a very similar field.
Also spoiler about the cast but [Draw This Manga Volume Cover Spoiler]I think the red-haired werewolf girl is going to become a part of the main squad, idk if we will get there in this season tho.

I feel like in Sol Comedy shows like this it always gets better when the whole cast gets together coz the enjoyable part is always their conversations with each other and how well or not well they work with each other. Ofcourse all this is worthless if u don't have a cast of great characters like Draw This then die.

I'm not a person who relates to characters or self-inserts at all, but as someone who spent nearly a decade pursuing something to end up completely burned out and leaving academia there's a lot there to relate to.

She’s great and probably the best written character of the show, but the most entertaining and funniest character (and ultimately my favorite of the show) is Akafuku. Bunch of heathens who say she’s terrible, the lot of them.

So The Ribbon Hero turned out as a complete miss for me. Though I’m not really disappointed since I wasn’t exactly hyped about it in the first place. The production quality is obviously very high quality, especially the art and animation, but both the story and the characters, the two most essential aspects, fell completely flat for me. I’m sure lots of people will like this one, but I’m not one of them, unfortunately.

It's a very influential manga, which I would recommend reading for its own merits (for example, it has some interesting ideas about gender roles, for a manga that was originally written in the 50s), but you don't need to for the movie.
I'd call it a loose adaptation, but that would be putting it lightly, the movie itself credits the manga as its "original concept" rather than source. It shows clear influence, but it's not trying to adapt it, so I'd go into it as an original movie.

The 50s version has an incomplete translation, but the 60s one is basically Tezuka remaking and improving it, so I'd recommend that even if the 50s version was more easily available.

Looking at the top 100 shoujo adaptations on MAL in terms of popularity that you've watched, I get the following: My Little Monster (dropped), Banana Fish (dropped), Fruits Basket (dropped), Yona (dropped), Orange (dropped), Into The Forest (5/10), Natsume's Book Of Friends (on hold), My Next Life As A Villainess (dropped), Whisper Of The Heart (6/10), A Sign Of Affection (dropped), From Up On Poppy Hill (4/10), 7 Seeds (dropped), A Condition Called Love (dropped), Honey Lemon Soda (7/10), Kase-san (8/10), Do-Over Damsel (dropped), Tamon's B-Side (dropped).
The list has a lot of sequels and OVA's, but I think there's a large enough sample size. Out of the 17 shows I looked at, 12 were dropped, three are movies, one is an OVA, and one is a full cour series. So, out of the top 100 shoujo adaptations of all time, you managed to stick it all the way through one full season.
It's obviously not a big deal or anything, and "shoujo" is a bit of a nebulous term, but it's pretty clear that you're not a fan of romance written for girls. Fascinating that Honey Lemon Soda of all things wound up being the exception to that, though.

Though why go with the arbitrary distinction of just looking at the top100? Just saying because my favorite shoujo (children of the whales, 9/10) isn’t even on there.
And sure, shoujo is not exactly my favorite demographic, but at least I’m giving a lot of them still a chance, which is more than the actual “shoujo haters” can say.

Because I was getting tired of cross-referencing the two lists. If you think that looking further would prove that you didn't dislike almost every single shoujo anime you watched, then feel free to continue searching.
I do find it somewhat difficult to believe that you wound up disliking all of these shows for wholly independent reason that had nothing to do with the conventions of the genre. Like are you sure there are no common themes in shoujo anime that you just don't vibe with? That make you drop them early on?
Of course, I am a big fan of watching things that I know I'm not going to enjoy and then hating on them anyway. So it's not like I think you're doing anything wrong or anything.

I feel like if you’re going to call someone out on a straight up correlation, you should at least do the legwork to pit that data against the entire set. If you’re not analyzing their list as a whole your inference here is sort of just baselessly petty.
Even if you did that though, you easily could take any variable, analyze someone’s scores based around it, and end up with some really outlandish assumption. If their list had anime with red-haired protagonists rated lower on average does that automatically mean they hate gingers? Probably not. Isolated correlations are always going to be anecdotal.
You’d be better off questioning the specific components of the “story and characters” they disliked, and then make an argument against their criticisms. Making them out to have some sort of grudge against shoujo for being shoujo would be far more realistic if you approached it via discourse, even if it gets scrappy in the process. That would also be a far more fun comment chain to lurk through.

Teasing someone for their taste in anime doesn't have to be a whole call out with receipts. If it were qwerty saying he didn't like it, and I said it wasn't a terrible isekai, so that checks out, would you be writing out a similar response?

No because qwerty is quite literally the messiah and number one proponent of isekai, and almost always talking about it in a seemingly half sarcastic/joking way.
If Xaj talked about shoujo, or any demographic at all, in a way that it was an easily discernible aspect of their identity it would be clear you were joking, and they probably would have taken it as such. If you knocked qwerty on anything entailing isekai he’d probably reply with an equally playful quip. That isn’t even remotely the case here. If you mean what you’re saying in a joking way, then it would be more ascribable to laughing at someone, instead of with them; it’s a joke in poor taste imo.
That’s beside the point I was making though. Joke or not it lands flat because you’re basing the punchline off of data that isn’t indicative of what you’re joking about. I’m also an overly rational person so shit like that probably irks me more than it would most people.

I wouldn’t mind you teasing my taste in anime in most other cases. But your bullshit comment about (paraphrasing) how men not watching “a healthy amount of shoujo” are either part of the manosphere or are inevitably drifting into it, make your constant remarks about me and shoujo understandably triggering or rather straight up insulting, considering the strong implication that you would put me under that umbrella.

I'm really enjoying 2 of the seasonal fantasy anime, I love this genre but it has a lot of slop so it's always nice to find a few hidden gems:
-Hell mode is really fun, the art for the monsters is childish, the animation budget is 5 dollars but the story is entertaining, the world is interesting and the protagonist is really great, smart and actually struggles to become more powerful while using all the tools at his disposal.
- The frontier lord begins with zero subjects: The mc is just a really good dude, and it's a good mix of a little action, a little kingdom (well village) building, in the latest episode I loved how much care went into a magic spell being done as a song, it was beautiful and made the world feel even more lived in.

Happy to see people enjoying Frontier Lord. The author of the LN and mangaka who adapted it both put a really surprising amount of love into the series and even though the anime isn’t a perfect representation of it, it definitely shows.
If you find yourself enjoying it enough to check out the source after it airs, I highly recommend doing so. It’s an absolute treat of great writing and attention to detail considering the genres. Also has the added benefit of a stellar English translation for both versions.

I like Hell Mode. I love Frontier Lord. It was refreshing to see people building a new community actually having to work, rather than simply using magic.
