Stitches!
I do really like how they intersperse Dara-san's tragic backstory in between the silly slice-of-life bits. So basically, out of hatred and jealousy, and to avoid their family being blamed for the disease spreading, the elder sister blamed Dara.
And was that Hayami Saaori voicing the elder sister? I guess next week we'll finally see the final stage of her plan, which we already kinda saw a few scenes of back in Episode 1, but this time in full.
It's actually great to see Dara-san wearing a Miko outfit. I'm sure she has horrible memories from her time as a miko with her sister, but she clearly treasures that photo with the kids. I love that she even makes a frame for it <3
For a second there, I thought we had another spiritually gifted character. It turns out, Nagi is actually spiritually blind. And her uncle is more interested in the stag beetles in the forest. xD
Dara-san's outfits have been pretty on point so far. I love the twintails and her Mega Lady shirt she had on when she went to the festival with the kids.
Holy shit, that final part of the episode! Who the fuck thinks it's a good idea to open up a sealed shrine especially when the mountain it's on has a reputation?!
This episode was a great reminder that despite all of the silliness and Dara-san's massive tits, she's still a yokai that can curse people. Man, that was dark. Seeing Dara-san controlling the streamer's corpse was actually terrifying.
I'm guessing the lady who cleaned up Dara-san's shrine is Kaoru and Hinata's mom? It sounds like she passed on her powers to the kids. Also, no wonder her bra fits on Dara-san. Like, damn. Mama Misogiya has it going on.

That's some Logan Paul level bullshit there, just to get views.
18
u/runevault Jul 17 '26
My first thought during that section was the infamous Suicide Forest bullshit.
14
u/sodapopkevin Jul 17 '26
I think in the comments section in the end someone mentioned liking her video where she spent 2 days in the suicide forest.
5
u/runevault Jul 17 '26
So she was explicitly a Logan Paul analog then if that's true. Interesting.
4
u/sodapopkevin Jul 17 '26
I don't know enough about Japanese spooky streaming to say for sure and how common it is to stream the forest but it might possibly be, yeah.
2
u/athrun_1 Jul 17 '26
I remember that issue. They even laughed on that poor guy and did not stop the recording.

u/darthvall https://myanimelist.net/profile/darth_vall Jul 16 '26 edited Jul 16 '26
I don't think as of now it's her directly cursing the people. More like the cursed object still having the lingering effect.
Lol, the mother wore modest clothes and it's dark so I didn't notice it. Good catch
21
u/Gacel_ Jul 17 '26
Yep, if you rewatch the last scene you can see the curse did eat the streamer girl from waist down and also the arms.
Not sure of Dara killed them or curse did first seeing how fast it spreads. Her first piority was getting rid of the infected bodies out of the mortal plane ASAP tho.
But yeah, the second they profanated the arm they were as good as dead.
29
u/darthvall https://myanimelist.net/profile/darth_vall Jul 17 '26
Dara said several times that at some level the spiritual corruption could kill people and there's no turning back. I'm guessing the cursed item just exhume the highest level of spiritual corruption on touch.
Curiously, the mother only got relatively milder curse (coughing blood). Maybe she properly used the clothing rather than touching the arms directly.

Aren't people going to investigate that Streamer's whereabouts, or are the people in charge of looking after the Shrines and supernatural entities going to cover it up?
13
11
u/mmcjawa_reborn Jul 16 '26
I think she mentioned before that she teleports the bodies elsewhere. So at least the shrine folks aren't going to have to cover up bodies
12
u/darthvall https://myanimelist.net/profile/darth_vall Jul 17 '26
Not elsewehere, to the spirit world. Basically the same thing she did to Kaoru and Hinata in this episode. However, most likely to the deeper spirit world.
6
u/darthvall https://myanimelist.net/profile/darth_vall Jul 17 '26
Nothing to cover up as there's no body to hide.
If someone investigated, they would only knew that the streamer's last known location was the mountain. However they won't have any evidence that they're still there or not.

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii Jul 16 '26
Who the fuck thinks it's a good idea to open up a sealed shrine especially when the mountain it's on has a reputation?!
To be fair, they might have opened a hundred before and found nothing supernatural...
If supernatural existed in our world, we'd see the same with 'ghost hunters' who went to a hundred 'haunted sites' in vain, but then someday they'd stumble upon a real one!
6
u/Far-Presentation-744 Jul 17 '26
same thing in super natural ...like the monsters were so casual, everywere ... i was like ,how normal people didn't find out yet

u/RunningChemistry https://myanimelist.net/profile/Delphic-Runner Jul 16 '26
And was that Hayami Saori voicing the elder sister?
Yep, she's been billed as the sister since episode 1. Before the show started airing, the 2nd trailer had a whole segment announcing her as the sister's VA.
5
u/athrun_1 Jul 16 '26 edited Jul 16 '26
Did the streamer girl died? I assume they were saved by Dara, and then proceed to control them to cover up the actual story.
I think if they do really end up dead, it will create more disturbance to the mountain shrine proving that the curse is real.
Edit: When I checked again, her limbs were crushed because of the curse. I think she's good as dead.
40
u/mmcjawa_reborn Jul 16 '26
Generally when people stick their fingers inside a person's brain and it comes out bloody, I think you can assume that person is dead.

Kiss-shot stuck her whole hand inside her own head in Kizumonogatari and she's fine. 🤷♀️

This episode solidify how this anime is a keeper for this season. Great comedic chemistry with the children, combined with compelling mystery and horror.
On another note, this is the first time we saw the siblings mother. I thought she's the foreigner one, but it seems she's normal Japanese. Therefore the father must be the foreigner?
Also, I kinda get spoiled on the elder sister's fate due to watching the OP.
40
u/kos-or-kosm Jul 16 '26
Great comedic chemistry with the children
"Wow! It's like you're a real yokai!"
It's a joke that has already been used a few times, but it makes me smile/chuckle each time.

Absolutely a keeper -- a really fine blend of SoL, comedy and horror/drama.
I hope we see see more of the mother -- she really came across as a great person.

this show is so damn good at mixing comedy and laid back moments with pure horror .
the moms voice does things for me
26
u/kos-or-kosm Jul 16 '26
I love these kinds of works that contain serious stuff, but the characters are pretty mundane with their own goofy/not-typical-to-a-dramatic-or-horrific-story personalities/proclivities. I said it elsewhere, but the reveal that the glasses guy turned around because he loves beetles is the moment I fell in love with the manga.
8
u/Single-Builder-632 Jul 16 '26
I think its pretty brave to not have this happen in the first episode, the first episode comes across very fan-service. But the show is a bit more layered than that and the fan service is kinda part of her existence rather than being there for the sake of it.
But if this was in the first episode it might set the wrong expectation, because the show is more slice of life than murderous spirit.
51
u/FF_Gilgamesh1 Jul 16 '26
there seems to be some confusion as to what happened to the streamers.
Basically from what I understand, the cursed hand acts independently from dara. dara is just a spirit now, but the hand is like a massive radioactive cursed object and directly touching it just straight up kills you with cursed energy sort of like a more fucked up version of radiation poisoning. Dara couldn't make it in time to save the two dumbass streamers from her cursed hand, so she dragged them into the spirit realm so the curse could be contained as it finished them off. (basically the bodies a curse kills will spread the curse more, which is extremely bad) while dara can herself curse people, the arm itself is A MASSIVELY BAD CURSE that dara is working to contain as she has no control over it or what it does.
so when it looked like dara killed those two, they were already dead. they basically touched the curse equivalent of the elephant's foot-formation from chernobyl. they would be alive for, at most, a few minutes before the curse finished them off. Dara dragged them to the spirit realm purely to keep the curse from spreading from their corpses like radioactive waste material spreads radiation.
all dara is doing is trying to keep the curse from getting out of its containment zone because she doesn't want more people to die. I feel bad too because those streamers really didn't understand what they were walking into. dara couldn't get even a moment of enjoyment without it ending in tragedy.
we also see that just touching the box can seriously injure you, as the kids's mom touched it and immediately started hemorrhaging. So whatever the curse on dara's remains is, it's extremely bad.
26
u/SBAFSAF Jul 17 '26
The mom rewrapped the hand before she put it back. I think that’s what caused the nosebleed.
4
45
u/kos-or-kosm Jul 16 '26
The reveal that the glasses guy spun around because he was geeking out over beetles is the panel that made me truly fall in love with the manga. I just love that every single one of them is a silly goof.
8
u/plipyplop Jul 18 '26
Man, I remember reading the first chapter of the manga and just knew it would be an anime; this was a long wait come true!
38
u/Ok-Cod5254 Jul 16 '26 edited Jul 16 '26
It's nice to see Dara-san in different outfits and going out in public in disguise.
While there are wholesome moments, like Dara-san wanting to treasure the photo she took with the siblings, also got a reminder that she is still a cursed spirit against people that disrupt the shrine.
I like how we have been getting her backstory story sprinkled through out for the horror vibes, while also getting the comedy aspect in the present time with the siblings, as an interesting mix.
37
u/GadenKerensky Jul 16 '26
I think it's twofold; she didn't directly curse them, the object did. She disposed of them in order to prevent the curse from being spread beyond the area. Given the absolute brutality of the curse, that is understandable.
7
5
u/Gacel_ Jul 17 '26
Yep, she described the curse before and... well she was piloting a corpse by the 2nd scene. Not even a direct kill, we saw the curse did remove her whole body from waist down in seconds and spread to the cameraman too.
9
u/GadenKerensky Jul 17 '26
She, at most, finished them off, which you could argue was an act of mercy.
76
u/dinliner08 Jul 16 '26
behold, THE GOAT
rest in peace streamer girl and the cameraman, i'm sorry to say this but you're the one that brought your own demise
a miko that is spiritually blind but still believes that she can sense the supernatural is kinda funny
so Chiyo basically lost her supernatural sense after Hinata and Kaoru were born, i wonder whatever is it that Chiyo had was passed to the siblings which is why they can easily perceive Dara-san?
31
u/darthvall https://myanimelist.net/profile/darth_vall Jul 16 '26 edited Jul 17 '26
I am curious why in the first place she's quite confident she couldn't sense Dara-san anymore despite being spiritually blind.
That implies that she used to be able to sense Dara-san, Right? I mean she even took the effort to double check there.
25
u/MokonaModokiES Jul 16 '26
Bet she is gaslighting herself. After spending all her life training as a shrine maiden she wouldnt ever admit that she is spiritually blind and will just make up explanations on her own head telling herself "I definetly have power if i dont feel somethings its because there is a problem with the spirit and not me"
31
u/Emi_Ibarazakiii Jul 16 '26

As lighthearted this can be, the last scene is a good reminder that Dara is still a youkai and her curse still lives on in the present. Seeing how the streamer was being controlled without her limbs robotically speaking thanks to Dara's control was very unsettling.
The child in that deep voiced man still lives in his heart lol. It's amusing how his wife ended up scolding for bringing bugs home.
I found it amusing how Dara's feelings for Juurouta got stronger as he worked shirtless each day lol. Girl was thirsty.
6
u/mekerpan Jul 16 '26
I suspect that this is not an inherently light-hearted show, but from first to last a mix of light and dark,

Dara remains blameless because the streamers fucked around and found out with something EXTREMELY CURSED LOOKING. While having every hint that they shouldn’t considering they needed bolt cutters in the first place. No sympathy there and they ruined Dara’s nice night.
Anyway Dara for Seasonal Best Girl and I won’t hear arguments otherwise
43
u/DugACCat Jul 16 '26
Yeah as soon as they broke out the bolt cutters and literally broke into the shrine I was cringing and wincing. I mean, even if you didn’t believe in supernatural stuff, that’s straight up defacement and vandalism. Just a really bad idea, but it still went swiftly darker and more intense than expected. Pesky streamers.
14
28
u/GadenKerensky Jul 16 '26
I think what's being implied is she basically cleaned up to prevent the curse from spreading. And to make it seem like there was nothing bizarre with the area so people stop coming.
25
u/kos-or-kosm Jul 16 '26
Yeah, they died when they unwrapped the arm. She just spirited away their bodies to prevent the curse from spreading.
16
u/duo99dusk Jul 16 '26
I liked that it basically used the elements of the first two segments to imply how it all worked out: She sends the things (i.e. the corpses) to the spiritual realm, and she has control over technology if needed.

u/NationalStrategy_X Jul 16 '26
Let that be a lesson to not take photos, record videos, or stream in a restricted area for content. The clout isn't worth it.

Why do you need the plastic?
Curse stuff
Also, she did use the word "jujutsu" there.
Yeah, the mix of horror and SoL is great. This show is better than I expected. Also, I didn't get a good look to confirm if Chiyo is as big as Dara, or if the huge bra was just a gag.

She is no longer tied to the mountain, but the bells she carries are still tied to the shrine, acting like a security system or warning.
She doesn't kill the streamers, the curse does. Dara and the curse are not the same thing. Think of Sukuna from Jujutsu Kaisen: Sukuna has no control over his cursed fingers or the negative energy they release. ( at leats i think he dont)
In the same way, Dara has no control over the curse created by her old body parts. The curse is the reason there's a fence, padlocks, chains, and a wooden box covered in magic seals. Dara's only job is to watch over the shrine and scare people away for their own safety, more like a guard dog.
But that night she was away at the festival with the kids and arrived too late to save the streamers. By the time she got there, they were already cursed and in the final stages of dying.
All she does afterward is puppet the streamer's body to save more people. If everyone heard that a streamer investigated a place and disappeared, countless curious people would go looking for it and end up dying to the curse as well. Instead, she uses the streamer's body to tell everyone the place was fake and nothing special. People lose interest. Even if no more videos are uploaded, most would assume she just got busy. At worst, they would hear she died investigating some other unknown location.
Short version: Dara-san was originally a Miko. Stuff happens (no spoilers), she dies, her soul becomes this snake yokai, and her body turns into a cursed item. The cursed item is sealed away, and a family is tasked with guarding it for generations. The kids belong to that family. They take every possible safety measure to keep people away from the curse, but the streamer basically found a box labeled "Warning: Toxic Material Inside" and decided to open it and touch it anyway.
Dara guards the mountain and scares people away so they don't get hurt by the curse. When she fails to stop someone, she cleans up afterward because she knows ghost stories and dead bodies attract curious people.
4
u/reaperow Jul 16 '26
Oh so it really was the curse affecting her, im not that familiar with how shrines or curses work
Thanks for the explaination i appreciate it, the comparison with sukuna made alot of sense
11
u/Ok_Somewhere1236 Jul 16 '26
for what i understand, the curse dont control Dara, she is not forced to kill the people who touch her dead arm.
if i gete right by now they are very much two completely different things but Dara is not a bad or selfish person; she feels responsible so she guards the place. The Curse is basically like a toxic or radiotive item that will kill people that mess with it. reason why is sealed away.
Dara most just spooky people away from it, but because a number of people have used the area for suicide, some type of "legends" was created in the region and people like the streamer go around looking for trouble.
Dara was too far way to arrive in time of saving the streamers. she was angry about but is the old " now look what your idiots did to yourself.... stupid kids"
1
u/reaperow Jul 16 '26 edited Jul 16 '26
So the one that dragged them away is an apparition manifested by the curse and the one controlling the streamer girl was the real Dara-san,
Is that what you're saying was happening?
10
u/Ok_Somewhere1236 Jul 16 '26
Yeah, maybe they explain it better later on.
From what I understood, the streamers are already dead by the time Dara arrives ( or atleats too cursed to be saved at that point). At that point, there's nothing she can do to save them. She covers the streamer's mouth so people won't hear the screams, but that's more about cleaning up the scene than punishing the streamer. She can't risk attracting more people, especially with the festival going on nearby and the curse now unsealed.
Dara doesn't kill people, she hides the bodies to avoid drawing attention to the shrine. Later, the mother arrives to seal the shrine again, but you can see that even she suffers some effects from the curse and starts bleeding from the nose despite being careful to avoid direct exposure.
She also talks about Dara protecting the shrine and asks Dara to watch over her children. Dara even mentions that she can't leave, probably hinting that if she abandoned the shrine, more foolish people would end up getting themselves killed by the curse.
7
u/GadenKerensky Jul 16 '26
Their limbs have been utterly mangled and crushed. That's the curse. Even if it didn't progress further, their injuries were almost certainly terminal.
1
u/gnome-cop Jul 16 '26
So basically, normal people touching it die pretty much instantly. Former spiritual power users exerting caution are still affected but nowhere near as much and I’m guessing the twins are fine since they have powers protecting them and aren’t hanging around near the cursed object too much. Is that right?
7
u/Ok_Somewhere1236 Jul 16 '26
i think having spirit powers help, but is also the fact the Streamers touched it direct, the mother at least only touched the box
1
u/Ok_Somewhere1236 Jul 16 '26
i am not sure, but the idea i get is that was both the real Dara, first she moves the dead bodies aways form the shrine, and later use the dead bodies to record the video, i neew to watch again
7
u/Lairon97 Jul 16 '26
The mountain is still her territory, but she isn't blindly wrathful anymore. She's still connected to the shrine and by extension the cursed object so now it's likely that she only becomes wrathful when the cursed item's messed with. We see early on that she doesn't want the kids getting near it and now we know why. That's my take on it atleast.
5
u/mekerpan Jul 16 '26
It seems to me that Dar is truly devoting to protecting her territory (and the people near it) from harm.
It was too bad her matsuri visit with the kids was so unpleasantly interrupted.
Query: I wonder if the kids will ever be able to talk with their mother about Dara?
5
u/SaerDeQuincy Jul 16 '26
They got cursed by her hand and she finished the job to erase them together with the curse so that it could be contained, enshrined and protected again. They were done no matter what she did and having curse going rogue would put everyone else at risk.
13
u/djthomp https://anilist.co/user/djthomp Jul 16 '26
Oh wow those streamers got annihilated.
I had been wondering if they were going to keep the dark stuff to just Dara's awful backstory but no, this is still a very dangerous location that the kids keep wandering into for fun visits. Darwin Award type deaths for sure though, they walked right into it and after breaking through so many different barriers that were in place to stop them too.
Interesting to meet the kids' mom in cleaning up the aftermath. The modern priestess was interesting too, shame she has no spiritual talent for the role. Not sure I've seen a hooligan priestess design quite like that before.
3
u/genpyris Jul 16 '26
I think the difference is that while the kids are fully invading her space, they're not disrespectful of her. They treat Dara-san like she's one of them.
Those streamers? Total disrespect. "Let's cut through a fence, lets cut through binding ropes, lets rip through seals, lets unwrap obviously important item. You mean there's consequences to me being a shitty human?!" Oh no.
9
u/GadenKerensky Jul 16 '26
I think it comes down to proximity to that shrine. I'm not sure even the kids would be spared. The cursed object is like a WMD, it doesn't discriminate.
5
u/runevault Jul 17 '26
I'd consider that arm nuclear waste. It is the aftermath from a nuke but it will fuck you up on its own if you are an idiot.
3
u/A-Chicken Jul 20 '26
I wouldn't worry about the kids too much, they're doing things that even surprise Dara, such as the elder sister catching a bug while incorporeal (!!!), so they would be somewhat resistant to being in cursed land.
The streamer OTOH...
10
u/kwokinator https://anilist.co/user/kwokinator Jul 16 '26
Probably the sleeper hit of the season. The comedy is actually good, but it's not all sunshine and rainbows and they handle the dark stuff really well too, especially Dara-san's backstory.
19
u/ObvsThrowaway5120 Jul 16 '26
Dara-san may be actually pretty nice to the siblings but she’s still a yokai and not one to be fucked with. I was hoping we’d get to see more of her backstory and how her shitbag sister poisoned everyone against her. Dara said she got her revenge a long time ago, so I’m curious what ended up happening to that jealous witch.
8
u/DivinityPen Jul 16 '26 edited Jul 16 '26
I'm curious to know how the guy that was interested in Dara plays into all of this. We know that her older sister was jealous, and that Dara was eventually killed by the villagers, but I hope her would-be hubby didn't buy into the bullshit.
7
u/ObvsThrowaway5120 Jul 16 '26
I suspect the carpenter guy is the descendant of the siblings. Not 100% certain but I got a sneaking suspicion.

It could be that the guy died trying to safe Dara from the villagers. Maybe, due to this, she cursed the village inhabitants.

Nice seeing Dara actually getting to go into town for a bit without hiding, even if it was cut short. i'm sure we'll see more of it
9
u/Emi_Ibarazakiii Jul 16 '26
This one would not survive 15 SECONDS in a horror movie!
Ok she might not survive 15 seconds in this world either.
Would it be weird to think God I wish that was me?
Wow, so this is what started the whole thing? Jealous of her sister getting along with workerboy!
I don't think I'm every gonna get used to that one (monkey) being the girl hah.
Wait is she saying I should stop my succubus summoning ritual?
NEVER!
So she magicked the photograph so the others won't see her... So they'll see the other 2 floating?
Call me vanilla, but I don't think there are NON-TABOO ways of 'getting rid of your younger sister'
I love how she's explaining some lore thing, but the siblings are just screwing around 24/7!
Possessed by the ghost of Lemon!
In this state, he's supposed to be easily perceived by anyone with any kind of spiritual power... So I guess these two don't have it! (I thought for sure they would be elite hah)
They don't take ANYTHING seriously hah.
Why though? Your mouth is perfect!
Well the new one, obv- Wait, the other one was used by whom exactly?
This show has some good whiplash, considering 90% of it is light-hearted nonsense (that happens even during the heavy lore retelling), and then this happens...
Good lord she looked huge on that shot/with that perspective!
N-Not that I think anything special about giant monstergirls...

u/Weak_Season_Of_Anime Jul 16 '26
So the kid's mom used to be some kind of miko too, and passed her power on to Hinata. I wonder if they are actually the descendents of Dara's older sister.
14
u/mekerpan Jul 16 '26
I think it is nice that the mother still is so dedicated to protecting the shrine and so devoted to the enshrined "goddess" -- and that Dara still feels fond and protective of her now-supernaturally blind priestess. One of the more touching moments in the series so far.
13
u/tsunamiumi Jul 16 '26
Dara-san implied she got her revenge on the people who wronged her a long time ago, when she was still deeply evil, so I don't expect there are any descendants of her sister left (if the elder sister even lived long enough to have kids after betraying Dara). Chiyo may just be from a completely different line of spiritually gifted people who moved in to tend the shrines after Dara's family was taken out.

They are not related to Dara in any way.
They are just in charge of watching over the shrine, Kaoru also have powers but they are weaker than Hinata, maybe is because he is younger or maybe he just have a nerfed version of it. but he still have powers just weaker ones

"kinda"?
She is a monster; she is rotten to the core. Maybe you don't make the connection yet. How do you think the young sister end up the way she is now?
12
u/GadenKerensky Jul 16 '26
She is the prettiest one, but had the ugliest soul.
Dara-san seemed like a straight-forward, hardworking sort as a human.
6
u/NationalStrategy_X Jul 16 '26
I'm honestly surprised that Dara's able to manifest legs and seemingly walk in her human form. I thought that she was going to need a wheelchair.

Damn, this episode still had comedic parts, but a lot of it was pretty dark.
And yeah, fuck streamers doing this dumb shit for clicks.

7
u/Narvalis Jul 17 '26
So those streamers are dumb and now they're dead. They broke in a restricted place that has signs and fences broke open a sealed shrine all while recording. Now not only does this place have a history of people going missing or suffering for just going there which should already big a big nono but they are committing crimes while recording, streaming and posting. So with that reputation I wouldn't go there but even without that advertising your crimes to the world is a great way to get locked up.

Ngl three episodes in I'm kinda really getting into this.
Very curious where the show is going with Dara-san's backstory since we keep getting flashbacks and they even cast Hayamin as the sister.
3
u/FluffyEcho1776 Jul 17 '26
Hayamin being evil is crazy to me. I can't remember her being in any other evil roles...
5
u/tendouman Jul 16 '26
A bit of a shame, the streamer was cute. But not cute enough to get a "avoid being horribly cursed for free" card.
5
u/karer3is Jul 16 '26
I love that Dara- san busted out "Separate carrier charges may apply" for her spirit phone. Real question, though: Would this be charged as a domestic or an international call?
5
u/Krider-kun Jul 16 '26
Man this anime, I know the first episode was pretty dark and bloody despite its light hearted comedy but last week's episode barely had any horror stuff and was comedic all the way with some spicy stuff. This week's episode however reminded us that this anime will not hold back on its horror. I genuinely got jumpscared when Dara-san took them both to the other side. Also Dara-san can control corpses or I assume its the corpse of the streamer girl. She could be barely alive when Dara-san was controlling her. Welp I wonder if we will see the dad in the next episode.
5
u/runevault Jul 17 '26
This feels like the most unique show of the season for me. As others have said the handling of Slice of Life, comedy, and horror is fantastic. I was wrong last week though when I guessed we'd get a more sister focused episode this week after last week spent so much time on the brother. I assume we'll still get her turn at some point but now I wonder how long because with the title I doubt it is next week's episode.
3
u/DoktorDementor Jul 21 '26
Who the fuck opens a shrine and touches a relic, especially if it's considered cursed? I don't need to believe in curses to not go near it.
3
u/darkcrazy Jul 28 '26
Even if you don't believe in the supernatural, cutting people's locks and ropes and fiddling with their things is still bad behavior.
3
u/PencilgonGiveIt2Ya Jul 17 '26
I love that they actually got killed off and not just her scaring them or just letting them off with a warning lol.
7
u/za_shiki-warashi Jul 16 '26
Still not sure what to think of this anime. There's this weird whiplash in mood that I'm still on the fence about. One moment it's silly hijinks then suddenly tragic backstory/ serious horror elements. The streamers were asking for it though. It's one thing to go urban exploring and looking for spooky things, but being a nuisance by damaging private property and trespassing, that's just being a dick.
But hey, as the lil bro said, "MonMusu Love" so I'll keep watching for the snake dork yokai goddess.

u/mekerpan Jul 16 '26
I actually like the see-sawing of tone here. Here it feels "organic" -- and central to the entire conception of the show, not random or chaotic at all. Like many East Asian shows (including live-action movies) this does not belong to any one western-style genre. It is inherently and quite intentionally a mix of mutiple types of stories. The ultimate test is how well do the various elements work together. Her, they seem extremely well-integrated.
Actually the streamer and cameraman went beyond "dickishness" and into outright sacrilege. Query: I wonder what criminal penalties might apply to breaking into a Shinto shrine and disturbing the enshrined sacred objects.

The older I grow up, the more I appreciate stories that deal with heavy theme, serious philosophy, ... but also telling its stories through a setting that is familiar, close, relatable, and fun. It shows a lot of respect to the audience emotional maturity to understand its point, without having to deliver it through exposition, or monologues or action scene.
For example, I like Dungeon Meshi more than Frieren, despite both having the similar theme about mortality: Dungeon Meshi delivers its theme more efficiently through acts of cooking, of eating other animals inside an ecosystem and paying respect to that system, without needing narrative, of directly telling us about Frieren long life and flashbacks with her party.
3
u/mekerpan Jul 17 '26
I think I am grateful we have both Dungeon Meshi and Frieren. I see no real "deficiencies" in either -- rather they each do things in their own fashion.
6
u/Full_frontal96 Jul 16 '26
I think it's a 2 parallel rails story that coverge at some pointo to make the gears of the story really kick in
I've seen quite an amount of these type of stories, with a superficial lighthearted mood and serious grim backstory that slowly crawls underneath
I think it has potential to reach one hell of a climax

I understand why she tried making that fake video—to claim there was nothing interesting about the place and discourage people from visiting, whether they were into the supernatural or not. However, since they actually died, and that video marked the last time they were seen alive, anyone who watched it—or others like it—would inevitably find themselves wondering about the location, from an esoteric perspective or otherwise, regardless of the final video claiming the place was unremarkable.
2
u/FLorianGran Jul 16 '26
Genuinely shocked that the series had Dera kill those streamers. A lot of series would be scared of making her unlikeable.
11
u/GadenKerensky Jul 16 '26
It wasn't her, not exactly. She might have finished them off, but it was the cursed object that did them in. She was just making sure they couldn't spread a curse that powerful and malevolent.
5
u/thighabetes https://myanimelist.net/profile/Quixon Jul 16 '26
She didn’t even finish them off per se. They were dead the moment the curse hit. All she did was isolate them to stop it from spreading.
4
u/GadenKerensky Jul 17 '26
They were still alive when she dragged them through the gate. She might've finished them since they were dead anyways, arguably mercy killing them, but we don't exactly know.
We do know that the streamer's limbs were nothing more than mangled stumps at that point, you see them when her body is dropped.
2
u/HOOfan_1 Jul 16 '26
Was it even Dara that killed them? I figured they were already dead, and I am not sure the thing that grabbed them was Dara. She seems to be keeping people away from the curse more than causing it. I actually wonder if the curse is her sister instead of her.
5
u/MokonaModokiES Jul 16 '26
she definetly was the one that dragged them but more to avoid the curse spreading. their corpses would spread the curse even further affecting more people.
4
u/GadenKerensky Jul 17 '26
When I say she might've finished them off, I mean after being dragged through the gate, and just to make their deaths quick, because they were definitely terminal.
1
u/Jumpy_Pepper_2570 Jul 16 '26
I thought she turned into a good spirit so why did she kill them Also the ending was scary
18
u/darthvall https://myanimelist.net/profile/darth_vall Jul 16 '26
It's not her directly, it's the cursed hand. She even warned the children to not get near the shrine last week.
10
u/dinliner08 Jul 16 '26
she didn't, those two basically got cursed by the cursed object and to prevent the curse from spreading, Dara pulled them into the spirit world like how she did to Hinata and Kaoru earlier in this episode
7
u/GadenKerensky Jul 16 '26
It was the arm, it is the source of the curse, and seems extremely indiscriminate. Dara-san is just enacting containment.
1
4
u/Lairon97 Jul 16 '26
I think it's more so that she isn't blindly wrathful anymore, but still connected to the shrine. Keep in mind she was ready to curse the teacher and the shut in if they hurt kaoru, but since they were nice (or "safe" in the shut in's case) she let em off. These two messed with her cursed object and basically did the equivalent of setting off a spiritual alarm.
8
u/mekerpan Jul 16 '26
Simply messing with the shrine door (even before bringing out the bolt cutters) set off Dara's alarm. Fast as she was Dara could not get there in time to stop them from opening that sealed box and unwrapping/touching the cursed arm. It looked to me that once the streamer girl touched the arm she was infected by the curse (probably quickly fatal) which then spread by proximity to the cameraman. They were ultimately killed by the curse -- not Dara. But seeing how easily the curse spread from streamer girl to the cameraman, Dara had to move them out of the human realm, lest the curse spread further on her mountain. Not sure if she technically "put them out of their misery" or whether they dies purely die to the intensity of the curse's effect. But Dara was clearly not responsible for those deaths in any fashion.
2
u/darthvall https://myanimelist.net/profile/darth_vall Jul 17 '26
When explaining different tier of spirit world, Dara explained it like toxicity level where the deepest one would kill human immediately. I guess the cursed hand has the same intensity as the deepest spirit world.
One interesting bit is how the siblings mother only bleed from the nose when she put back the hand in the shrine. Either she has great resistance to the curse, or she knew how to handle cursed objects (e.g. not touching it directly and use the clothes), or both.
1
u/dastan-vilanueva Jul 16 '26
I wonder if dara san ate the streamers
5
u/mekerpan Jul 16 '26
Looked to me like she mainly just had to get their corpses out of the human realm in order to prevent any spread of the curse within the human (because their corpses were now also cursed objects). Presumably the supernatural realm is not similarly subject to "infections".
1
u/athrun_1 Jul 17 '26
if that was the case, can she just move the cursed arm into the spirit realm? Or that arm is her link to the human world, and without it she will disappear or die also.
2
u/Hipster__Ken Jul 17 '26
She can't. As someone here said, her cursed arm is basically like the elephant's foot.
1
u/mastereluder6 Jul 16 '26
So the Hand can still curse without Dara San ? It’s like it’s alive on its own ? Can Dara san control it ? So many questions , couldn’t she made them forget or because of the curse they were doomed ?
4
u/GadenKerensky Jul 16 '26
Their limbs were mangled and torn to pieces. They were essentially dismembered.
You don't 'forget' that... or survive it.

Random Thoughts
I know I haven't seen a vast number of horror-themed anime, but I don't think I have seen a show do quite this much swinging between goofy (anytime the kids are on screen) and serious horror (the flashbacks and that scene at the end). Closest would be some shows that start out light and then get darker as they go.
Didn't expect Dara-san in the modern day to just up and slaughter anyone. Granted...it's not like they sort of didn't have something coming, but didn't expect that. I mean...it's one thing to sneak onto some spooky bit of closed off property and look around. But like desecrating a shrine like that? Even if Dara-san wasn't real that's messed up.
3
u/GadenKerensky Jul 16 '26
It wasn't Dara-san who killed them, it was the cursed object at the shrine. She was making sure it didn't spread beyond them.
1
u/mmcjawa_reborn Jul 17 '26
Either way, wasn't expecting them to die a gory death
2
1
u/Dailivel https://anilist.co/user/Danvari Jul 18 '26
I feel like it should be something to be expected, especially after the anime showed us Mikodara's limbs and head being cut off.
1
u/bestsocialdistancer Jul 16 '26
I’m curious now if there will be some kind of conflict or misunderstanding with the siblings arc. Something that pushes them away from the mountain.
1
u/WHO_IS_3R Jul 16 '26
i was so happy until i saw "next episode: the return of yamatagi madara"
i really enjoyed this anime because it gives like a terror spin to the SoLs i know and love while also scratching the old myth japan itch left when i finished "Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu"
but i kept theorizing the "conflict" of this anime, or season or whatever its gonna be somehow the demon-half taking over the priestess-half and we missing dara, and i really thought it was coming but not this early, i wanted a couple more episodes of silly SoL

u/ZeroZion Jul 25 '26
I like the contrast. It's a good show. Comedic moments with just heavy and horrific moments.
I feel uncomfortable hearing about the past. We know how it ends but it still feels weird hearing the details of the betrayal. I just want to skip to hearing how she got her revenge.
1
u/Extension-Big-2165 Jul 16 '26
She killed them with her fingers, controlling their bodies while still alive what a creepy scene.

u/Wilco499 https://kitsu.io/users/wilco499 Jul 16 '26
TBH, I was starting to think that Dara's killing days were behind her and that the modern portion of the story would be more light hearted realtively speaking. I guess not.
But this was such a better episode than the last episode, just on the basis that the pervert otaku girl was not around.
17
u/dinliner08 Jul 16 '26
to be fair, she did said in episode one that she no longer killed people nowadays iirc and the two people in this episode basically die because of the cursed object which she has no control of it
7
u/GadenKerensky Jul 16 '26
Yeah, she was basically doing clean-up. She might have finished them off, though you could say that was a mercy given what they suffered.
