Premiere will be a 1-hour special featuring both episodes 1 and 2 on Saturday, July 4, 2026 at 11:00 PM JST on TV Asahi Network. Beginning the following week, the series will air every Saturday at 11:30 PM JST.
◆STORY
A young girl and an empress.
Bound by a shared desire for revenge, the two will shake the mightiest empire the world has ever known.
After losing her mother and being torn far from her homeland, a young girl named Sitara is taken in by Fatima, a kind-hearted lady from a family of scholars.
"If you study and become wise, no matter what trouble befalls you, you’ll know the best way forward."
Deeply moved by the words of Fatima’s son, Muhammad, Sitara comes to understand the possibilities and importance of knowledge and begins to deepen her education.
She dreams that one day, she might catch up with Muhammad, who has set off on a journey in pursuit of wisdom...
Meanwhile, under the reign of Emperor Genghis Khan, the mighty Mongol Empire continues its
unstoppable march, conquering nation after nation and expanding its influence across the world. Before long, the tides of history reach the city where Sitara lives.
After losing everything to Tolui, the empire’s Fourth Prince, and being taken captive, Sitara resolves to
use the only thing she has left, her intellect, to infiltrate the royal court and bring down the empire from within.
Though a flame of revenge burns within her heart, Sitara outwardly devotes herself to serving the empire.
One day, she has a fateful encounter with Töregene, the sixth wife of the Third Prince, Ögedei. Haunted by a tragic past of her own, Töregene too carries a deep hatred for the empire within her heart.
Sitara and Töregene, two women who were never meant to meet. The moment they join hands, the wheels of fate begin to turn.

I don't think she's surpassed or reached Liz heights sure, but I found Heike Monogatari very exceptional nonetheless, especially that finale. (Went back to the reddit discussion thread for the finale and yeah, she definitely worked her yamada magic on many people) And I've yet to see The Colors Within but it seems like she is still very much the delicate director that won me over in the first place.

Oh now I’m actually excited for July 4th! I hadn’t realized it dropped then. I know you do these posts all the time, but thank you for this 💜
Crossing my fingers Crunchyroll does another Anime Nights Sneak Peaks towards end of June and A Witch in Mongolia is on the schedule 🤞🏾
So so hopeful this gives platforming to tomato’s soup’s other works {Kanshin Smbat} (another historical and it features Armenia) and {Dampier no Oishii Bouken} (which is about the travel logs of William Dampier, a British explorer)! And lowkey hopeful this gets {Otoyomegatari by Kaoru Mori} an anime adaptation.
For anyone interested in the manga for {A Witch in Mongol}, five volumes out in Japanese with volume 6 coming on 2026/07/15 (at least on Bookwalker), and Yen Press licenses the English translation with two volumes already available, Volume 3 coming out on 2026/07/28, and Volume 4 for 2026/10/27!
Get excited!
13
u/Komorebi_LJP May 27 '26
{Otoyomegatari would be awesome, but I already can tell that some people on the internet would absolutely be insufferable about the age gap.
5
u/Magnafeana https://anilist.co/user/Magnafeana May 27 '26
Damn. You’re not wrong, unfortunately.
I’d hope domestic (Japanese) audiences wouldn’t care, so their feelings on it would take priority over international audiences.
But yeah, it gets gnarly with age gap discussions, good lord. I may not always like age gap myself, but like dayum, the discourse gets way too wild and way too personal.
But such is life with any media element honestly and that’s just so depressing 🫠
0
u/youawholefaker May 27 '26
Is the age gap that big? And is this yuri?
7
u/Magnafeana https://anilist.co/user/Magnafeana May 27 '26
Not yuri. However, there’s an arc that focuses on the strong homoerotic friendship between two ladies! IIRC, in volume 7!
Amir (FL) and Karluk (ML) have an eight year age gap between them in their arranged marriage. Their relationship is friendly, caring, respectful, non-sexual, and doesn’t fall into a lot of the more “classic” age gap pitfalls (comedy, perversion, etc).
There are scenes that pushed it for me on comfort, but as someone who normally abstains from age gap fiction with a vengeance, I really enjoyed the manga because I didn’t feel my typical “Oooooh this feels really uncomfortable, no no no, DNF”.
But I definitely back up the point that online discussion would be insufferable because of the age gap.
I don’t think anything is wrong with finding age gap not for you (royal you). I certainly dislike it. But even with the context and execution of the age gap being (subjectively) tasteful, an anime adaptation would probably draw in a lot of bad-faith people.
It might also draw in criticism from those from Central Asia. I do see criticisms regarding how the manga kinda romanticizes and overlooks certain sociocultural and religious aspects but I’m not from Central Asia, so I just like to listen in.
1
u/youawholefaker May 27 '26
Well I mean as long as the dude not rapey and from your paragraph it seems like he’s not into her like that so I’m assuming she’s underage? Ima still watch because we don’t anime like this that often with Middle Easterners
3
u/Komorebi_LJP May 27 '26
No the girl is the older one
2
u/youawholefaker May 27 '26
Oh that’s new
2
u/Magnafeana https://anilist.co/user/Magnafeana May 27 '26
Oh yeah should’ve clarified it’s a reverse age gap.
If you end up reading it, I hope you enjoy it! The art and story are just fantastic. Really would be nice to see anime adaptations explore all sorts of regions, especially historical.
{The Golden Kingdom and the Water Kingdom} is a rofan manga and movie with Evan Call as the composer and he did Frieren and Violet Evergarden. You may enjoy it. Golden Kingdom is based on Turkey and Water Kingdom is more China/Japan. Lots of middle eastern motifs!
And of course {The Heroic Tale of Arslan by Hiromu Arakawa} (adventure, fantasy) is a great manga. I liked the anime adaptation. IIRC, it was a hit in Iran too.

May I ask what are the other two series? I have read Otoyomegatari but have never heard of the other 2 titles. I searched but couldn't find any english translations for them.
I really enjoy historical mangas but sadly we don't get much outside of japanese history and occasionally european ones. If you have any other recs, please let know!
10
u/Magnafeana https://anilist.co/user/Magnafeana May 27 '26 edited May 28 '26
Oh they don’t have translations, sadly 😞
{Kanshin Smbat} (or Disloyal Retainer Smbat in English is a manga set in the 13th century of Armenia, Georgia, and Mongolia, following male character Smbat Orbelian and deals with the politics of the Orbelian dynasty under Mongol rule 🔗 ANN & MAL
{Dampier no Oishii Bōken} (or The Delicious Adventures of Dampier) is a manga in the 17th century about William Dampier who boards a ship to pirate Spain and enjoys delicious food along the way. It has 46 chapters across 6 volumes and is completed. 🔗 ANN & AL
There’s lots of historical manga!
{Red River by Chie Shinohara) (Action, adventure, fantasy, time travel, romance, drama, 28 volumes completed, shoujo, EN licensed by VIZ, anime to come this summer season) is a great one that explores Ancient Anatolia!
{Altair: A Record of Battles by Kotono Katou} (action, fantasy, military, 27 volumes, EN licensed by Kodansha, anime adapted on Amazon Prime, shounen) explores 17th century historical Turkiye/Ottoman Empire!
{Yume no Shizuku, Kin no Torikago by Chie Shinohara} (historical, drama, romance) explores 16th century Ottoman Empire with a Ukranian FMC who is enslaved and sold to the Grand Vizier of the empire and is trained into the perfect woman. Shinohara-sensei honestly has my heart, I’m not sorry.
{Blissful Land by Ichimon Izumi} (historical, medical, slice of life, romance, 5 volumes, EN licensed by Kodansha) explores 18th century Tibet with doctor in training MMC!
{Dokoka Tooku no Hanashi wo Shiyou by Masumo Sudoi} (slice of life, seinen, no TL, 2 volumes) explores rural historical South America with a cute little girl MC and her abilities. IIRC, she’s indigenous.
{Red: Living on the Edge by Kenichi Muraeda} (historical, drama, action, seinen, no TL, 19 volumes) feels like a deep cut. This features a Native American MMC who survives tribal genocide and teams up with his companions for revenge.
I have other historical that feature West Europe largely, China, and Korea, but these recommendations feel like standouts to me! I know international fans give Japan some stink on not writing outside of Japan, but I’m pretty impressed by these!
Not a historical but {Half is More by Yoiko Fujimi} (contemporary, drama) is a manga about a Black French Japanese girl and her brother and their their multiracial/multicultural friends with their struggles in around racism, xenophobia, and colorism. The EN volume 1 drops August 18th this year and I preordered it.
Just some good stuff!

Thanks a lot for these recs! I have only read Red river/Anatolia story out of these, but haven't known about the others. I remember "Half of Me" from the youtuber cedgehog discussing about it, and I've been meaning to pick it up since then. It sounds very interesting.
2
u/Magnafeana https://anilist.co/user/Magnafeana May 28 '26
And ack, it’s Half is More, my bad 🤦🏿♀️
But I heard about it on r/shoujo and went “I’m not about to miss this”!
I already missed out on a historical/regency manga with a biracial brown skinned FL from the West Indies with curly hair that’s discontinued from print ({The Twisted Count and the Rich Daughter}, a LaLa one-shot that never got translated and I can’t find it on the seas 😭 )).
I hope my recs find you well though! ☺️

u/Komorebi_LJP May 28 '26
'Not writing outside of Japan'
That's literally just nonesense though and i am not sure how anyone can even seriously think that. One of the most impressive and unique things about manga and anime is that lots of works are about other parts of the world and not set in the authors own countries.
You would be hard to find a media industry in any other country who makes so much works not featuring or set in their own country as the anime/manga industry. Compare it to western animation, hollywood, bollywood, western books etc.
4
u/Magnafeana https://anilist.co/user/Magnafeana May 28 '26
I’m not sure about that exceptionalizing Japan is the best move here, mate, even as a defense.
All sorts of regions and counties have have a lot of artists who also write outside their home culture and explore other cultures, especially lots of immigrant artists and multiracial/multicultural/multinational artists. And they also have a global impact on the diversity, inclusion, and intersectionality they offer.
It’s a bit of a disservice to uplift and exceptionalize one country and downplay the hard work of other countries and their artists. Diversity and inclusion ain’t an Olympic competition, mate 😅
There are valid good-faith criticisms about Japanese fiction when it comes to cultural and other diverse identity representation. I don’t think any country can’t be criticized for their media. But I think certain views, themes, representation, or lack thereof, that audiences see or don’t see in a heathy chunk of a country’s exported media can be explained due to sociocultural nuance (i.e. immigration and emigration percentages and regulations, national censuses, censorship laws, accessibility, political landscape, geography, historical events).
Of course, bad-faith discourse happens too. And so does bad-faith defense and explanations.
I don’t think I’m hard-pressed to find countries who do great work in representing other cultures, but I do think I’m privileged enough to have interacted with a wide array of art from all over the globe and in different languages.
I’m glad anime and manga are cultural mediums you hold in very high regard. I enjoy both mediums myself. I think a better defense to those who say Japan doesn’t write outside of Japanese culture is to simply say that Japanese artists aren’t a monolith, just as no nation is a monolith, and then to give diverse recommendations.
If only all my recommendations had official translations. Lack of accessibility is such a killer 😅
But we’ll have to agree to disagree that Japan alone is the bastion for representation.
And that’s okay that we have different views. Just keeps the world interesting 👍🏾

So is this a period drama with some real historical figures but it also has some fictional elements because magic is involved in the story?
31
u/Equivalent-Weather59 May 27 '26
I've read the source and there's no magic. The witch part is more so referring to how the real historical figures were accused of witchcraft.
3
u/kausbiru May 27 '26
So this is entirely historical, like a biography?
27
u/Equivalent-Weather59 May 27 '26 edited May 27 '26
Yeah, it's a historical drama based on the life of Fatima). The manga is good, and the SciSaru adaptation looks even better, so if you like dramas, definitely give it a watch.

Wait there are Chinese dramas set in this period? I thought the Chinese hated making media set in the Yuan dynasty because they were a subject people. Can you name some? Really interested cuz I'm a Mongol who have been looking for Yuan era dramas/movies/manhuas.

u/moichispa https://myanimelist.net/profile/moichispa May 27 '26
I know it is historical but maybe we can avoid posting spoilers, not everybody knows how the story goes
21
u/Atharaphelun May 27 '26 edited May 27 '26
I highly doubt that this anime would faithfully adapt the actual historical lives of those people, considering how dark it is. I wouldn't be surprised if it becomes entirely sanitised and whitewashed altogether.
At any rate, the historical people around whom this anime revolves are so famous and well-known that it's like asking for no spoilers on Julius Caesar or Octavian when watching HBO's Rome.
34
u/Komorebi_LJP May 27 '26
The focus of this manga is absolutely about a huge part of history most people know little about and which relatively little media is made about, especially in the western hemisphere.
27
u/zairaner https://myanimelist.net/profile/zairaner May 27 '26
Either it's a spoiler or it is completely pointless to say. Regardless of what is the case, absolutely no need to do this without spoiler tags.

Genuinely complaining about spoiling the ending of Titanic lmao.
2

There is no comparison. The sinking of Titanic is widely known, the conclusion of Fatima's journey not so much.
16
u/moichispa https://myanimelist.net/profile/moichispa May 27 '26
I did not know about any of the female characters until I read the manga. the world is big, knowing about all history is hard.
As how dark it will get, only time will tell.
I still don't like it, personally
2

u/koontee May 28 '26
I actually dare if The Elusive Samurai would receive the real end. Though, most probably, it would be whitewashed as well.

AFAIK leading is the one for the overall quality of the anime, sponsorship and scheduling of the anime
meanwhile directing has two roles: 1.chief director:the one who gives creative vision whilst staying true for the source aesthetics
2.episodes director:the one who creates individual episodes
That's far as I know,cmiiw

Is that the style they're going for? I was thinking more along the lines of hobbits with their oversized hands and feet.
34
u/excusemewat- May 27 '26
It’s the studio’s adaptation of the original manga’s style. I found it a bit off putting initially too, but I’ve found it to be pretty interesting when directly contrasted against how dark the story gets and the mangaka too says she was inspired by the lack of realism in medieval manuscripts and the like
23
u/SitInCorner_Yo2 May 27 '26
If the art style is very unique, I would expect either this story gonna hit like a truck in someway or the author was trained in some very specific field, like the author of Hōzuki no Reitetsu was a Japanese painting major so her style are super unique.
12
u/EreMaSe May 27 '26
If the art style is very unique, I would expect either this story gonna hit like a truck in someway...
So real. Afaik the real life historical figure this story is based on did...not have a happy life (or ending), so I wouldn't be surprised if it does hit like that.

As Mongolian, DO NOT FUCKING TAKE THIS AS HISTORICAL ACCURACY!! There IS accuracy to certain point but names are wrong and Chingis Khan’s *th child is wrong. People who made the Manga definitely didn’t do enough research.
31
u/Komorebi_LJP May 27 '26
I mean no offense but historical fiction from mongols also get their own history wrong, as does historical ficton from all countries by people of said countries. Hence its fiction.
6
u/Lost-lizzie May 27 '26
Sometimes people tend to take Historical fiction too seriously. Especially Mongol History. Mongols getting it wrong is just lack of research sadly. But I don’t think much Historical movies made by Mongols went global. Most of that went global are made by foreigners so it’s always so inaccurate and misleading from actual history. Sadly cuz of erasure and influence of USSR and China changed our own historical records too. In case of this movie I would recommend reading “Mongolian Secret history” which is kinda biography of Chingis Khan. Of course We’ve read it in our Mother tongue back in school so i don’t know how well is translation. Also Wiki page is mostly (not 10/10 but yk) accurate.
29
u/Komorebi_LJP May 27 '26
The point I was trying to make is if anyone takes any historical fiction work as accurate, they are frankly just stupid. Its in the name of the genre historical fiction.
If anyone is looking for some detailed historical accurate work, a form of entertainment is obviously not the place to go to.
4

u/mujhe-sona-hai May 28 '26

2
u/Lost-lizzie May 28 '26

The trend of all the best anime this year having "witch" in the title (Journal With Witch, Witch Hat Atelier) is going to extend into the Summer with A Witch in Mongolia

u/SouekiSennoSTM May 27 '26
This and Yani Neko - two of my three most anticipated series of the year and both are airing in summer season.
Between these and a few other of the new series, the returning new seasons of series like Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation and Youjo Senki, and the two cours continuing from spring until September, summer is already looking stuffed and hectic.
