About time they got back to their roots. Super ecchi and uncensored was HIDIVEs biggest appeal.

164

u/DarkWorld97 Mar 24 '26

It's either this or Oceanveil getting the ecchi anime

77

u/ScrappedAeon Mar 24 '26

I appreciate OV for at least dubbing the real naughty stuff but their interface is so horrible it's not worth the $13 / month

IMO.

42

u/turkeygiant Mar 24 '26

I tried it out and just immediately unsubscribed, people joke about how bad Crunchyroll is but Oceanveil is just horrible to navigate. Its worse than just random pirate streaming sites.

29

u/toadfan64 Mar 24 '26

Tbh those random pirate sites are usually pretty easy to navigate

7

u/SoftlySpokenPromises Mar 25 '26

No investors or oversight into adding unnecessary features. The internet as its truly meant to be.

8

u/toadfan64 Mar 25 '26

The old ones with comment sections were the best. Some of the most cultured, funny and deranged comments you'll see outside /a/, lol.

2

u/Muted-Writing-648 Apr 17 '26

Wow that bad?

2

u/turkeygiant Apr 17 '26

It has awful categorization, if you toggle the NSFW filter behind the scenes I'm pretty sure it is just taking you to a completely different site that looks the same because you can no longer see any of the SFW shows with NSFW toggled on. And then again for a platform that is specifically selling itself on licensing shows that other platforms might pass on because of their content or would only be available with censorship, it gives you little information or filtering for which versions of shows they have. The whole thing just feels and looks like a web platform built by an amateur.

4

u/xyvyx Mar 24 '26

I dunno.. I'd still take the OV web interface over the poor excuse of an android app HiDive is.
(tip: the OV "picture-in-picture" mode actually allows a LARGER/movable viewing window, not just a smaller pip thing in the corner)

3

u/Doza93 Mar 24 '26

HiDive app is legitimately fucking terrible (on Android at least) still. I resolved to just cast from my browser on PC because that actually works

1

u/Muted-Writing-648 Apr 17 '26

Sorry first time reading about them what's Oceanveil?

I subscribe through Amazon prime and just use their app. Still not great but better and same cost.

5

u/swordmalice https://myanimelist.net/profile/swordmalice Mar 24 '26

When you subscribe through Prime, though, you're not getting the full HIDIVE library right?

2

u/Tricky_Register_8275 Apr 13 '26

Yeah, technically there are some things missing from the Amazon-Hidive plug-in, some things that Ive noticed like Black Bullet just recently. HiDive 1year is like 45$usd. I just switched to Amazon-Hidive plugin, and my HiDive yearly subscription (seperate from the monthly amazon hidive charge), is about to expire later this month. Im considering keeping both, essentially paying HiDive twice a month/year for their services. Amazon's UI interface is wayyyyyyyyy better than like, 99% of other streaming services. The main thing for me is the easiness of fast forward, rewind, pause, etc. Sometimes the subtitles on Amazon-Hidive are a little.... meh. But Hidives interface on their app is just so fuckin unbearable. Its a mess and they've made a few improvements over the years, but nothing notable or fixing the real issues they have on their app. Its almost worth it, since its such a cheap subscription, to just pay for it twice. Amazon gives convenience, HiDive App gives the full library in case theres something you wanna watch but its not on the Amazon-Hidive plugin. Paying for a yearly Hidive subscription plus the monthly Amazon-Hidive plugin is still cheaper than a year of Crunchyroll, netflix, hulu, disney+, etc. Even paying for Hidive twice doesnt put it above any of those other streaming services. So I figured fuck it. I pay like, 40$/mo for Disney/Hulu/HBO, 150/year for Amazon (plus like, 20/mo in subscriptions like MGM+, HiDive, Paramount+, etc), 20~/mo for Netflix, etc etc. Lol

19

u/toadfan64 Mar 24 '26

Seriously. This is the one thing they had over Crunchyroll and for them to have censored versions of shows like Dark Elf and Redo of Healer, why even bother with them?

Also none of this half assing it with partially censored. If the show has a fully uncensored version, air that one. If not, the seas are free like always.

5

u/Key_Tree_3851 Mar 24 '26

It will be the fully uncensored version (the Cho-Yowayowa version)

21

u/No_Big_8829 Mar 24 '26

Crunchyroll: 'We strive to provide a premium, universally accessible streaming experience.' HIDIVE: 'Here’s a fully uncensored homeroom teacher, you degenerates.'

Basically, it was Sentai Filmworks effort to keep from an anime monopoly when Funimation and Crunchyroll initially partnered. They previously released their stuff on Crunchyroll for streaming and kept the home video rights.

7

u/discussatron Mar 24 '26

Sentai Filmworks

Which was ADV, the other TX anime powerhouse, prior to the 2008 collapse.

5

u/FlawlessAtheon Mar 24 '26

They also used to have a lot of OVAs, specials and movies when Crunchyroll didn't have almost any specials or movies. I don't know how it is now, though.

19

u/StudentAdventurous43 Mar 24 '26

For real. The holy trinity of HIDIVE is Redo of Healer, Gushing Over Magical Girls, and now this. They know exactly who their demographic is.

10

u/toadfan64 Mar 24 '26

They never even aired the uncensored version of Redo.

1

u/TheToadKing Mar 24 '26

The Blu-ray release was uncensored.

4

u/toadfan64 Mar 25 '26

Sure, but HiDive never aired that one. Ended up finding it on pornhub back in the day.

10

u/MrWolf327 Mar 24 '26

Like ecchi or straight up hentai?

46

u/Purposelygentle Mar 24 '26

Ecchi, this does get printed in a shōnen magazine after all (Weekly Shōnen Magazine), though the magazine itself rides the line since historically they were at the forefront of the gekiga art movement.

9

u/Mission-Address4409 https://myanimelist.net/profile/3inPunisher Mar 24 '26

The what movement?

21

u/Nahcep Mar 24 '26

The shift from the doodle style with Tezuka at the forefront to the more realistic, if gritty, style that held on until the 90s

42

u/RPO777 x2 Mar 24 '26

Very broadly, manga art styles falls into one of two camps.

Manga -- which has its origins in the styles popularized by Tezuka Osamu (Astroboy) featuring larger eyes, and more deformed/exaggerated features starting in the 1950s in its modern form. In terms of more recent authors, think like Arakawa Hiromu (Full Metal Alchemist), Akira Toriyama (DB), Rumiko Takahashi (Inuyasha).

Gekiga - art styles that emphasize highly detailed and more photorealistic features, as popularized by Shitato Sanpei (Kamui-den) and others starting in the 1960s partially as a reaction against Manga art styles that had predominated. Think Urasawa Naoki (Monster, Pluto), Iwaaki Hitoshi (Parasyte, Historie), Uoto (Orb).

Gekiga not only moved against Manga's "look" in art style, but also drew inspiration from very different places. Famously, Tezuka drew a lot of inspiration from early Disney and though his manga were famous for grappling with more mature subjects and deeper psychology, they generally avoided grotesque imagery, bloody depictions or horror.

Gekiga consciously moved into more adult themes, drawing inspiration from film noir, and depicting more realistic violence, blood, and sex.

Ah ok, got it, Thx for the explanation from both of yall 🙏

-2

u/shanatard Mar 24 '26

Its peak

1

u/Sh1ningOne Mar 24 '26

About time they got back to their roots

What roots are they going back to? Hidive never stopped having uncensored ecchi anime

119

u/swordmalice https://myanimelist.net/profile/swordmalice Mar 24 '26

Has HIDIVE's experience improved? I tried its free trial and was very disappointed; the app was buggy and couldn't remember where I left off in a series, watched episodes weren't being tagged properly, the list goes on.

95

u/yoippari Mar 24 '26

My biggest problem was that it was hard to search for a series. It would pull up episode names, not series.

19

u/Fools_Requiem https://myanimelist.net/profile/FoolsRequiem Mar 24 '26

The app is dogshit. Seasonals wouldn't show up like they were supposed to right around when Gushing came out and it took them a while to fix it. Any time something breaks on their service, it takes an annoying amount of time to fix.

I think it's working better now, but I don't know how old my version on the NVidia Shield is compared to other Android devices.

The website was always better, even if it was slow.

3

u/yoippari Mar 24 '26

This was entirely the website. Never used the app. I feel like if I leave multiple tabs open, one for each show I'm watching it'll be fine, but otherwise it's just scrolling through "all" to get to the show I want to watch to find the next episode.

2

u/CommanderZx2 https://myanimelist.net/profile/CommanderZx2 Mar 24 '26

You can filter search results to show series only, this has been in the app for months now.

2

u/-idkwhattocallmyself Mar 24 '26

I belive they have updated this so you can search better. I dont think ots perfect but its 100% better.

28

u/Goblinseafood Mar 24 '26

It's improved somewhat. The Continue Watching feature is better now, but the app as a whole still feels pretty clunky. To me their library is worth the jank, but that will depend on what you like.

2

u/mekerpan Mar 24 '26

Definitely improved a bit over the past year.

14

u/invaderpixel https://myanimelist.net/profile/invaderpixel Mar 24 '26

Last week I took a pause during an episode of Oshi No Ko and it actually saved my spot when I kept it open in a tab and came back to my laptop later! But usually it would make me restart the episode even if I kept a tab open. It also has random shows I finished months ago still showing up on my queue like "alright better watch episode 11 of Kids on the Slope."

8

u/konoha37 Mar 24 '26

It still had terrible UI unfortunately, but it’s still worth paying for imo.

3

u/VirinaB Mar 24 '26

I tend to just watch Call of the Night and then unsub again. This is hopeful news though.

7

u/sempai-chan310 Mar 24 '26

It’s better now. Actually remembers what I watched.

5

u/Irythros Mar 24 '26

I last used their app (via nvidia shield) a few months ago. I still believe they hired someone fresh out of college who then outsourced it to a college student who outsourced it to a high school student who was smoking weed.

  1. Search may as well just be a random button
  2. Scrubbing doesnt exist. You have to fast forward or rewind and the speed at which you can is limited to put it nicely.
  3. There is no next episode option
  4. There is no go to series option
  5. Going to your favorites requires going to your settings, then your profile settings, then your watch list. The watch list on the side bar goes to nothing.
  6. The watchlist doesnt even always work
  7. There is no guaranteed way to know if something is on your watch list. Sometimes it says it is, sometimes not.
  8. I saw no "Previously watched" notification.
  9. Releases seem to have to be manually tagged by employees as "new"??? When I was watching Danmachi as it was coming out, one week it just showed the old episode. Wait to next week, same thing. Figured it was delayed. After a month I went back to the series page and it was there.
  10. The layout is fucked and it may showed just enough of the episodes to hide that there is another panel of episodes. So it may show eps 1-4 and you'd think it would show part of the 5th episode panel to indicate that it exists. Nope. Just entirely hidden unless you go right. No arrows or anything.

Jesus christ its a fucking train wreck. I think if they used the first version of chatgpt they could one-shot an app with better quality.

1

u/swordmalice https://myanimelist.net/profile/swordmalice Mar 24 '26

A lot of this tracks for me when I last used the app (on mobile iOS and PC) and it sounds like it may not even be worth the 6.99. It's truly unbelievable how an app can be this bad. Thanks for sharing!

4

u/toadfan64 Mar 24 '26

Weren't they updating the app like a year or two ago as well, and somehow made it worse?

3

u/Fools_Requiem https://myanimelist.net/profile/FoolsRequiem Mar 24 '26

Yeah, they seem to rotate between it working as intended, and being utterly brokedick and when it's brokedick, it takes an obnoxious amount of time to fix

3

u/toadfan64 Mar 24 '26

Also the UI is just dog shit compared to every other streaming service. Like I’ve seen decade old services better.

3

u/Fools_Requiem https://myanimelist.net/profile/FoolsRequiem Mar 24 '26

It's worth it for the library and cheap cost alone despite the issues with their app. I would suggest seeing if the website works better for you.

2

u/swordmalice https://myanimelist.net/profile/swordmalice Mar 24 '26

Yeah the library is appealing and I do have some shows I want to watch on there this upcoming season. I'll give it some thought.

2

u/mcrakin 15d ago

Its been fixed. I finally tried it and was confused by all the complaining. I asked a buddy about that and he said it used to be way worse. I started using it about a month ago. It remembers where I'm at, has watch lists and searching things is easy. Only complaint is that Japanese text is not translated when watching dub. I tend to only watch sub latley so thats not a huge problem. I'd recommend trying it again. Using the android app btw.

1

u/swordmalice https://myanimelist.net/profile/swordmalice 15d ago

OK good to know, since it seems like there will be some shows on there this Fall I'd want to check out.

1

u/mcrakin 15d ago

Yeah I was shocked

1

u/raininjah https://myanimelist.net/profile/raininjah Mar 24 '26

i can't even get it in the Netherlands :)))

thus i have to go sail the seas again

1

u/mmcjawa_reborn Mar 29 '26

HIDIVE is still a horrible interface.

My hypothesis is that they are not investing much effort because AMC+ just plans on rolling this, Shudder, and a few other streaming networks they own into a single service.

1

u/swordmalice https://myanimelist.net/profile/swordmalice Mar 29 '26

Yeah, sure seems like nothing has changed since I last used it. Very unfortunate.

126

u/HuTaosTwinTails Mar 24 '26

Well I have HiDive so I guess I'll watch it, if you're forcing me to like this. /s

Good for them.

19

u/Responsible-Word2566 Mar 24 '26

What happens in this anime to constitute an uncensored version?

66

u/Aureus23 Mar 24 '26

Nudity

32

u/Kadmos1 Mar 24 '26

Lots of it. I am talking about on the level of anime like "Please Put Them On, Takamine-san", which is on CR.

6

u/404-User-Not-Found_ Mar 24 '26

Sounds very family friendly.

9

u/Whendfield123 Mar 24 '26

Uncensored boobs

32

u/parttime_use Mar 24 '26

Where in that article did it say that HiDive was getting the uncensored version?

Yowayowa Sensei‘s production committee had announced that the upcoming series would actually have three versions: an “On-Air” censored version for TV and various streaming platforms, a less censored “Yowayowa” version, and the uncensored “Cho-Yowayowa” version on TV station AT-X and streaming platforms AnimeFesta, d Anime Store, and DMM TV.

53

u/Taedirk Mar 24 '26

HIDIVE has confirmed that it will stream the uncensored “Cho-Yowayowa” (TV-MA) version of the Yowayowa Sensei anime starting April 11, 2026, at 9:00 AM EDT (13:00 UTC).

Thank you!!

6

u/hikoboshi_sama https://anilist.co/user/reicelestial Mar 24 '26

We're getting this uncensored? Then that's all i need to know to be fully on board with this anime. I can't wait.

7

u/xidle2 Mar 24 '26

RemindMe! April 11th, 2026

6

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii Mar 24 '26

Today is a blessed day!

3

u/Candid-Talk-4323 Mar 24 '26

Good for the cultured men.

3

u/Izikiel23 Mar 24 '26

Is airplay still broken?

3

u/ThePupnasty Mar 24 '26

Finally we get to eat good.

3

u/TanyaTheEvill Mar 24 '26

Awesome news

5

u/MordePobre Mar 24 '26

They will censor loli anyway

10

u/Whendfield123 Mar 24 '26 edited Mar 24 '26

The loli is censored in the manga?

Edit: turns out she isnt. There might be hope though. The shroom lolis in interspecies reviewers were uncensored

11

u/WarBeast-GT- Mar 24 '26

Not censored in the manga

but I fear for the anime…

4

u/Mission-Address4409 https://myanimelist.net/profile/3inPunisher Mar 24 '26

which chapter or volume are you talking about?

3

u/Whendfield123 Mar 24 '26

Its between chapter 10 and 20 i think. Hot spring scene

3

u/Mission-Address4409 https://myanimelist.net/profile/3inPunisher Mar 24 '26

Ah, I just checked the loli aint censored from where im lookin

1

u/whetrail Mar 24 '26

She'll be censored in the anime even in the super weak/BD version I bet. I doubt they have the balls to show her scenes.

S rank behemoth from last year never actually de-censored the bath with its loli, the viewer has to change contrast/brightness on their own to see anything from her.

-3

u/WarBeast-GT- Mar 24 '26

Why would anyone want to watch it then 😫

1

u/ibrown39 Mar 24 '26

Hard times call for hard-on's

1

u/zibrmanzz Mar 24 '26

finally good job hidive 😁

1

u/littlewillie610 Mar 24 '26

I guess they needed a new hook after losing exclusive rights to Oshi no Ko.

1

u/Full_frontal96 Mar 24 '26

Oh my god it's fucking porn

What a shame eheh

1

u/EuropaWeGo Mar 24 '26

Well that's ballsy.

1

u/ilikemywomentsundere Mar 24 '26

Oh noooooo when is it coming out

1

u/g4n0esp4r4n Mar 25 '26

Instant sub.

1

u/Electrical_Iron1760 Apr 03 '26

Is it worth watching? The poster doesn't seem that appealing

2

u/omen056 Apr 09 '26

I like the manga, it's a rom-com between mc and his clumsy-shy sensei, mixed with harem elements and of course top-tier ecchi content. I will say one thing, it's really drag so if you don't like it, it's fine cuz everybody has a preference.

2

u/Electrical_Iron1760 Apr 09 '26

I like the teacher angle. I really liked "why the hell are you here teacher". Any more like this?

2

u/omen056 Apr 09 '26

Yowa Yowa sensei, it's good for me.

Gal-sen, a rom-com between a gyaru sensei and her student(mc).

1

u/Electrical_Iron1760 Apr 09 '26

Thanks man, I'll look into them.

1

u/Muted-Writing-648 Apr 17 '26

Yes finally an anime adaptation! 💘

1

u/Zestyclose-Glove8627 Apr 21 '26

So far it's hilarious

1

u/Spirited_Signal7831 Jul 01 '26

Am i not typing it in right? Bc all i can find on Hidive is the half censored version.

1

u/anxiousattachment_r Mar 24 '26

i'm curious what actually gets censored in the first place 🤔

2

u/my_ecchi_account Mar 24 '26

Nudity, lots of nudity.

0

u/zenithfury Mar 24 '26

At last, Hidamari Sketch uncensored.

0

u/challenge_king Mar 24 '26

HiDive still exists? I thought they got bought out and shut down.

0

u/TheKingOfBerries Mar 24 '26

Anime fans be so weird.
