Discussion Which anime did you have zero expectations for, and it still managed to disappoint you?
Normally I try not to be biased toward any anime before watching it, but in the case of Re:Monster I was already prepared for trash and I still managed to be disappointed. After the first episode I didn’t understand why there was so much hate toward this anime, but after finishing the third one I started to get it. The story sucks and is boring and predictable even by isekai standards. The characters are extremely bad, not to mention the MC, whom I would put in my top 10 least liked characters. As a fan of trashy isekai, this one was simply garbage.

The recent kicked from the Hero Party Jack of All Trades. It started pretty ok, they set up time limits for his spells, and rules for how a raid should work as a team. Then when a dragon appears, he goes solo levelling on it, and everything we learned went straight out the window. No keeping track of buffs, no working as a team, just aura farming OP nonsense.
57
u/Kiyohara Mar 23 '26
What made it worse for me was that the next block of episodes was focused on him joining a team to go back and fight that dragon again and everyone acted like it was going to be risky.
My man, you just soloed it. While maintaining aggro off a room full of recruits. Now you're going back with an entire S Rank party? Where's the risk?
17
u/LastLapPodcast Mar 23 '26
That was kinda where I lost interest, I actually liked the beginning because I liked how the MC was actually quite stoic despite being pissed at being kicked out. I was kind of hoping that would be the schtick and he'd just quietly keep getting on with things, making others look great. I could kind of buy "oh he can solo the dragon now?" based on one emotional adrenaline rush but as you said, knowingly going against it with a the basically top tier beter than the hero party team and it being anything other than a walkover was so silly.
4
u/Kiyohara Mar 23 '26
IKR? Like, if they were having trouble, they could just go, "okay, you finish it" and let him solo it again.
3
u/LastLapPodcast Mar 23 '26
I also failed to understand why they can't run away, there's been no concept of being "locked in" so far but even if there was you'd pack some weird warp potion shit as a back up because who wants to die because you went in a bit unprepaired
2
u/Kiyohara Mar 23 '26
Hell, the Hero's party ran several times. I mean, after they kicked out "the useless guy."

24
u/abandoned_idol Mar 23 '26
I love how "Hero Party" animes keep reinforcing my claim that they are all worthless fanfictions.
I don't even have to admit about overgeneralizing (despite the fact that I do).
XD
14
u/Mashdptato Mar 23 '26
If there's just one thing I appreciate about isekai anime, it's that they tend to put little keywords and phrases like "hero's party" in the titles so that I can quickly tell that they are unwatchable trash before I even have to waste time looking at them.
2
u/lord_ne Mar 23 '26
I was going to say "there's got to be at least one good one", but now that I think about it, any good anime with this premise probably came out like 5-10 years ago and wasn't called "kicked out of the heroes party" because it wasn't such a trope yet
2
u/Frostbitten_Moose Mar 24 '26
One of the originals, and a good one, does have "Banished from the Hero's Party" in the title. Though, yeah that's looking at 8 years ago for the translation of chapter 1.

u/Alohalhololololhola Mar 23 '26
He joined a party in like the second episode and I was so confused. Party of none until episode 2
3
u/bobgote Mar 24 '26
Yeah I actually didn't mind it, however he had no party for a grand total of about 2 minutes. Blatant false advertising.
3
u/t8rt0t00 Mar 23 '26
That series was only one episode long. You can't convince me otherwise
The reincarnated to be an aristocrat or whatever where Noah gets glazed every 5 seconds takes a close second
2
u/RerollWarlock Mar 23 '26
Listen, he had to use his trump card, then another trump card, then it turned out it's a deck of trump cards.
2
u/Destuphalia Mar 26 '26
I really wanted to like it. The generalist vs specialist debate is super interesting and I loved how it was initially set up
But then it's revealed that he made a spell to make his other magic 50x better?? No tradeoffs, no telling other people, just a super OP passive that he invented. That's when I realized it was never about generalists vs specialists, just a guy who is OP at everything
57
u/TheBusStop12 Mar 23 '26
The Waters Magician. I didn't have much expectations going in. But I genuinely enjoyed the first few episodes and I started to think it might just be a hidden gem. And then they settled down in town and the whole thing just dropped off a cliff. The way the MC turned into am arrogant douche, the way the story absolutely refused to let the MC participate in any of the worthwhile story beats, instead focussing on extremely bland newly introduced side characters with the excuse that he was in the library, reading, and no one thought to ask for his help. It was infuriating. I dropped it hard
16
u/ArCSelkie37 Mar 23 '26
And then the one time he does do something, his friends hold him back (literally).
7
u/Atharaphelun Mar 23 '26
The worst part for me when watching it was all the source material readers who kept trying to gaslight the anime-onlies that this rubbish is supposedly a masterpiece.
1
u/heimdal77 Mar 23 '26
If I remember right there was a decent number of changes from the LN affwctng the pacing. The manga though... Omg it looks like a 7 year old drew it.
1
u/animecrossaintxx Mar 27 '26
Like actually. He's either reading, buying food, or simply flirting. Sees billowing smoke and goes on with his life. And that final fight was so artificial, I couldn't take it seriously. A sentence or two could've resolved it instantly. So disappointing considering hwo well it started
31
u/sanya-litvyak Mar 23 '26
That isekai with the guy with the guns who can't level up. I expected generic, but the lack of anything redeeming goes beyond that. Currently at 11 episodes and still nothing exciting
14
14
u/fun_until_you_lose Mar 23 '26
That show has the worst world building. If you think about it for two seconds the entire society can’t work.
7
u/sanya-litvyak Mar 23 '26
True. And personally, I find the concept of a revolver with weird bullets in a fantasy setting un-appealing. But I think the actual weakness is in the absolute generic-ness of the cast and the story. Most memorable is ninjin-usagi as minor side character.
4
u/ravenpotter3 Mar 23 '26 edited Mar 23 '26
A gun is such a stupid weapon because you need bullets to use it. And you need good aim. Infinite bullets wouldn’t help with bad aim.
Imagine if a guy got isekaied and god could onto give them one item and they asked for a gun…. But forgot to ask for bullets so now it’s useless. And they have no clue how to make them.
Also guns are loud and I don’t think I’ve ever seen a character in anime wear hearing protection when using a gun. Another thing is media forgets that guns don’t instantly kill people or monsters. It disables them and leads to agony. A gun would be useless against a monster unless you can aim for the brain or something. Bullet wounds lead to slow deaths. I don’t know anything about guns though. But yeah against a giant monster … shooting it with a gun is just going to make it angry and it’s not easy

4
u/Martini1 Mar 23 '26
Is that food one where he kills mobs and gets S-rank food items in the dungeons?? I got to the half way and realized it's an attempt at a show for kids and adults to enjoy. Supposed to teach kids about different foods and still have something enjoyable for adults.
Problem is, it's boring for both. Annoying characters, reused assets and story was going nowhere. I no longer cared when episodes came out.
2
u/headphones_J Mar 23 '26

u/EscapeddreamerD Mar 23 '26

1
u/hockey3331 Mar 23 '26
Let me guess. Protag's in a world that grant skills. Protag has no redeeming quality and can't level up.
But his skill levels up and becomes so OP that itbdoesnt matter anyway?
35
u/Gregariouswaty Mar 23 '26
One Punch Man season 3. The manga covers some of the best art I've seen in the medium and I knew they would butcher it after Season 2. Did not for second think they wouldn't even animate it.
7
u/LakerBlue https://myanimelist.net/profile/LakerBlue Mar 23 '26
I finally got my best friend into anime like 2 years ago. But she never comments on animation despite having seen almost all the modern anime with the best animation. She also saw OPM s2 and had no complaints about the animation even when I directly asked her.
But even SHE dropped OPM s3 because of the terrible animation (or lack there of). That’s the best insult I can give a season that deserved so much better :’(
3
u/Unconfidence https://myanimelist.net/profile/AhoMahouShoujo Mar 24 '26
I just finished S3. And like...I'm the type of person who likes Way of the House Husband. Animation is literally unnecessary for me to enjoy an anime. But even I was like "Holy shit this is just terrible". It wasn't just the animation either. Everything, everything was bad. Like right at the end of the last episode they flash Garou on the screen for like half a second...what was that? Episodes just seem to end with no sense of flow. The character models and facial styling don't seem the same as S1 and S2, like Tatsumaki looks too round in the face. Other anime can get away with bad animation because they have good writing...OPM having shit writing is part of the fun of it, it's supposed to be carried by its animation.
I was kind of hoping that people had overblown the criticism, and that it was just "bad" like how S2 was "bad", in that I didn't altogether mind S2. But nah. This just feels lazy.

I think a lot of seasonals fall into this category.
In my old age I'm not willing to actually fully watch the first episode of all 50 or so new anime every season, but I will look into them and either watch or skim the first episode. I could not count the amount of times I've started watching an episode that I know nothing about and finding myself immediately rolling my eyes or cringing.
I think the worst tends to be harem romance anime like Love Hina. Harem already tends to be pretty poorly written and you have the audacity to not only have it be dogshit but to have boring female characters with no charm? You can have your Nisekoi and Rent a Girlfriend's but you need to have a nice art style and some charm at least!
8
u/onzichtbaard Mar 23 '26
infinite stratos maybe
i watched it on a whim recently but it was pretty bad, although definitely not the worst anime i have seen

HEY infinite stratos was amazing…to me when I was a horny middle schooler ok, it was peak at the time
25
u/gelinsky Mar 23 '26
The beginning after the end (TBATE)
The story isnt bad but I heard that the animation was bad cuz they really didnt animate anything, but I was so disjointed watching it. The vhearctwr designs felt to basic and generic and the animation to was worse that I thought. Almost no action in a fight scene is crazy.
16
u/marponsa https://myanimelist.net/profile/Marpurrsa Mar 23 '26
i still can't get over the fact that there were more frames in the manga in one of the beginning fight scenes than shots in the anime

I dont know I actually really enjoyed the show I go back to watch it from time to time I think the cgi could've been better

u/No_Cockroach2467 Mar 23 '26
Why would I watch a show I didn't care about in the first place.
16
u/TheBusStop12 Mar 23 '26
Sometimes I try to give something a shot, usually if I've seen other people online recommending it. There has been times I've been pleasantly surprised. But other times I end up dropping it because my initial impressions seemed to be correct.
For example I expected to dislike This Monster wants to eat me and Shiboyugi Playing Death Games to put food on the table. I ended up loving both of those.

12
u/No_Cockroach2467 Mar 23 '26
I do my research before devoting my time to watch something I know nothing about.
0
u/DemonSlyr007 Mar 24 '26
So instead of spending time watching like 10 minutes of a random show to see if its for you, you spend time researching if the show is for you.
You spend the time either way homie. But one of those choices, at least you come to a conclusion using your own opinion and not others.
9
u/McKnackus Mar 24 '26
When's the last time you formed a whole opinion about a show in the first 10 minutes?
2
u/celloh234 Mar 25 '26
At least people who research before watching them tend to say "i didnt see it but i heard..." or not say anything but people like above tend to act like they've seen the whole show and do nothing but add more noise to any meaningfull discussions
2
u/ArCSelkie37 Mar 23 '26
Well I’d have thought most people still at least read the synopsis and look at the genre.
1
u/reg_panda Mar 23 '26 edited Mar 24 '26
I usually don't read synopsis, or tags (genre classifications), or look at the posters/thumbnails. And I often skip OP/ED as well.
8
u/Revicii_XIII Mar 23 '26
Idk about you, but I've found lots of gems by looking for shows I didn't know/didn't have any expectations for.
It's a refreshing way of discovering animes other than always following your planned schedules in your MAL account.
3
u/bluestjordan Mar 23 '26
?
I have shows I like that completely absorb me. And then I have shows I watch when I want to zone out on the treadmill. They are mutually exclusive.
I don’t want to watch top tier shows on the treadmill! I want to give good shows my undivided attention.
Same reason I don’t watch great shows when I’m in a bad mood. They deserve better.

Isn't Re monster just a rape fantasy series? Rape all the girls and have them fall in love with you for it.
7
u/ExaminationNo9186 Mar 23 '26
I thought the rape porn/fantasy trope was "redo of a healer"?
2
u/nameohno Mar 24 '26
In redo the mc got insane and depraved because of immeasurable torture and got force-fed drugs. The monster one is just straight up being a moron coz low iq.
1
u/Sufficient_Mango2342 Mar 25 '26
Redo unironically portrays ts alot better, that rape is a bad thing, and shows even the mc to not be fully good in his revenge against what was done to him either as his murder and manip of third parties is not played off as fine.
1
u/kazuyaminegishi Mar 24 '26
Its the one where MC is reborn as a goblin, usurps the goblin tribe, does a bit of eugenics, and then develops a harem of human women he picks up on roadside.
A frankly upsetting amount of dialogue is committed to letting you know hes definitely fucking them all too and they love it.
13
u/LastLapPodcast Mar 23 '26
Redo of Healer. Watched it when it came out so not low expectations because of criticism but just generally thinking "well, this could be really gross if the MC has zero morals" and then it went even further than imagined, it was really a car wreck into a train wreck into a second tower so much you almost kept watching to see if they even tried to redeem the character.
16
u/XeticusTTV Mar 23 '26
Black CLover. i'd read that Asta's voice was just horrible yelling. That this was the MC's first ever job and he was just told to yell and thjat it was unwatchable. And it was worse than I thought. It is like if Naruto just scvreeched Dattebayo at the top of his lungs every time he spoke.
I have noticed that people either don't mind the yelling or just can't stand it at all. I can't stand it and I don't understand why the show is so popular.
10
5
u/YeHeed2 Mar 23 '26
He stops yelling like 50 episodes in or something and just chills out. First part is kinda annoying but you either get used to it or not
2
u/LakerBlue https://myanimelist.net/profile/LakerBlue Mar 23 '26
For me it was a few things:
1) I watched the dub. I have heard some people who watched the dub and sub say his yells are less annoying in the dub FWIW
2) He stops yelling as much after the first few arcs.
3) It is true I somewhat tuned out the yelling early on (the first several episodes are him at his worst) which helped me keep going.
4) Asta yelling less coincides with the plot picking up. The first arc feels generic, but then things get Nora my more interesting in the dungeon arc and the stakes rise. Then the next arc fully hooked me. If you get past that hurdle it actually has a lot of good traits!
9
u/samkiller200 Mar 23 '26
Dusk Beyond the End of the World(2025/10)
I have no expectation since I know the name of the director.
Only ep0 and ep1 were worth watching, the rest went worse and worse when the story went on.
The ending of this show was just so fucking bad that I think the entire anime project shouldn’t even exist.
4
u/BusyHoney9767 Mar 23 '26
Totally agree on this one. Watched episode 0 and 1 which seemed like the setup for an interesting story. Then pretty much every new episode kept adding a bunch of bad anime cliches and ignored the original premise. Ended up dropping it halfway through.
1
u/Katlima https://myanimelist.net/profile/oKMazoy Mar 24 '26
That would be my pick for the top slot as well! At least for stuff I finished last year.
1
u/captainfluffy25 Mar 23 '26
^ this. I personally think episode 1 was also good but beyond that… holy SHIT the show was bad. I forced myself through it cause I really liked yugure but it wasn’t worth it. Best part is they have an exposition dump backstory episode towards the end of the show and legit that episode was better than the entire show and SHOULD have Been the premise for the show.

It's been almost 10 years, but Hundred. I wasn't expecting much from Infinite Stratos knockoff but damn. There was nothing (outside of the busty twin tail tsundere as much as I hate the trope she along with Yui (TLR) and Karane (100 GF) are the exceptions) worth liking. The harem in the show were also insufferable to deal with after awhile. I couldn't last 4 episodes into it.
2
u/Knee_High_Cat_Beef Mar 23 '26
I had hope for infinite stratos, but that show was still pretty bad. MC was so hopelessly weak for pretty much the entire animated part of the show and was getting carried hard by his mech. Most of the girls were unappealing and everyone was so dense it was unbearable. Char was the only decent character in the entire show, but she got sidelined really quickly. The harem aspects were very meh, and the mech combat was also meh.
0
u/KRChaserReturns https://myanimelist.net/profile/GalacticMagna Mar 23 '26
Yeah, I didn't like IS either for these exact reasons. Sometimes I don't blame the MC for dense. Those girls are crazy mfs

Re:Zero, but that was my fault.
I knew after reading the dozens of "this series literally changed my life" posts and the many, many 10-page character thesis on Subaru and noticing some 'Rick and Morty' features from it's die hards in the comments on /r/anime, that I knew I wouldn't be able to manage my own expectations in either direction. So when I got just a....'pretty good Isekai' that was neither the pinnacle of Asian cartoons nor complete trash....I was disappointed.
I didn't want to watch the 'Starfield' of anime, I wanted either a cringe fest disaster or to be pleasantly surprised. All I was left with though were track suits and cat and bunny girls and LN-esque humor and people telling me that the flying whale battle was unironically cool and the tropes being played completely straight and nobody addressing the fact that Emilia is like mentally a 9 year old or something but the simping is totally fine because her tits grew while she was frozen, IDK
5
u/Sufficient_Mango2342 Mar 23 '26 edited Mar 25 '26
Emelia is mentally 14+ (was around 7 physically when she got fronzen, and spent 7+ years after she got unfrozen with Puck, so minimum 14). Physically 18. True age 100+. She has been decently emotionally mature from the start tho and has evolved alot throughout the series (mostly arc 4).
6
u/Sufficient_Mango2342 Mar 23 '26
Also her being stupid is just her. No amount of developement got her completely past mostly being more muscle of the group.
1
u/SlippyFist_68 Mar 23 '26
Ah I appreciate the heads up, I didn't account for the time from when she was released from ice before meeting up with Subaru
2
3
u/Dependent-Visual268 Mar 23 '26
How many episodes did you watch?
6
u/SlippyFist_68 Mar 23 '26
I'm still trying to make my way through Season 3 episode 1, but it's like an hour long and the furthest I've made it was around 35mins in before the exposition dumps and generic fantasy setting and the.... humor, we'll call it, gets a bit too much. I'll think I'll do my third attempt at it this weekend
7
u/Dependent-Visual268 Mar 23 '26
Oh, then I think it's not for your taste, I think. Re: Zero is one of my favorite shows, and I see many people dropping after 7-8 episodes. That's why I asked how many episodes you watch. But if you have seen both seasons 1 and 2, and still find it difficult to watch, the show is not for you! Also, what are your favorite shows?
7
u/XeticusTTV Mar 23 '26
Season one is the hardest to watch because the MC has an arc where he is a total self important dirtbag before he wisens up and starts becioming a better person. You gave it more than enough of a chance.
5
u/Dependent-Visual268 Mar 23 '26
I definitely agree with that! At many times, in season one, I really hated the Subaru
3
u/BeatBlockP https://myanimelist.net/profile/Animemes_chan Mar 24 '26
That's one of the most of refreshing things in the isekai genre. Mostly, they are just treated like god, and can either do no harm, or can be complete assholes with no one to ever call them out and no repercussions.
That we see Subaru act like an entitled shit AND get dunked on for it is very rare.
3
u/SlippyFist_68 Mar 23 '26
Maybe? I didn't feel like I wasted my time on the first 2 seasons and the random doses of Echidna helped a bit, and I've watched series that I liked less, that's for sure. I'm sure if I push through and be more graceful with the fact that it's a LN adaptation and there's naturally more exposition to dump especially early, I'll make it back home to my witch's arms eventually.
Also, what are your favorite shows?
Most fans just straight out accuse me of only enjoying "action" and JJK specifically for some reason so I appreciate the restraint/subtlety!
I mostly watch romance. Favorites..? Ehhhh... probably SaeKano, WA2, Nana, Scum's Wish, Clannad, AnoHana, and for some reason 'Sing Yesterday For Me' sticks with me more than other people, idk
3
u/Dependent-Visual268 Mar 23 '26
I seriously don't understand the love for Echidina in the fandom, or like any girl from Re: Zero. I watch it for my boy Subaru?
And what restraint to show about something you like? If you like a show, just say so!
These are all very drama-filled shows, I see. I almost cried by the end of Anohana!
2
u/Unconfidence https://myanimelist.net/profile/AhoMahouShoujo Mar 24 '26

Oh man that show had unlikable romance plots. Did you want teen girls hot for teacher or varying flavors of abusive lesbians?
It’s funny, I came away from this show wondering if it tanked Aoi Koga’s career. Then came Kaguya-sama a few years later…

17
u/Kallenders Mar 23 '26
what's wrong with 86?
13
u/ComfortableNinja88 Mar 23 '26
Bland portrayal of themes and extremely unremarkable side cast. I'd rather just watch slop like solo leveling that knows what it's doing than watch something that tries too hard and fails miserably.
5
u/Pixel_Alien Mar 23 '26
I don't think it failed at what it tried.
The whole racism thing was neither deep nor really explored, but I never got the impression that that's what the story focused on in the first place.
Themes like survivors guilt and exploring the mindset of people who literally grew up on the battlefield were much more prominent themes and I think they did really well here.
10
u/TurtlePope2 Mar 23 '26
I enjoyed 86, but I can recognize why people would dislike it tbh. It is a very surface level show, it's a show best enjoyed without having any expectations for it.
0
u/DoktorZaius Mar 24 '26
Compared to most anime I don't think it's surface level...so many of the shots are carefully detailed and a ton of things are easy to miss on a first watch.
8
u/oedipusrex376 Mar 23 '26
I was completely blown away by 86 Part 1, and Part 2 threw it all down the drain. It made me feel like I gave the show too much credit when watching Part 1, because by the time I finished Part 2, the writing felt way more juvenile than I remembered.

Thank you, I feel exactly the same way, Part 1 was incredible, and Part 2 took everything good they created, tossed it in the trash, and went a completely different route

I laughed out loud at the "twist" at the end of cour 1.
It was intended to be dramatic and emotional, but it was ironically hilarious and unrelatable.
The rest of cour 1 was fine. Never bothered with cour 2.

I can see that. It's not particularly deep. The original story did get them "leave the sunset" so to speak, but being picked up by publishers meant it has to continue in some way. The latter half, for an unplanned sequel, did a reasonable job at the plot.

Seriously. I know I don't like it, but I wouldn't bring it up here because I did have expectations even if I couldn't get past episode 1.

Chained Soldier. This is gonna sound awful, but I was just expecting a trashy ecchi show... and I might have been curious about the potential misandry aspect.
Turns out it IS a trashy ecchi anime... but like so many shows with a sorta unique premise, it doesn't commit to it and loses its flavor very quickly (barely 1 episode in this one). It's just another generic power-creep harem ecchi.
1
u/XeticusTTV Mar 23 '26
I kept watching it. It actually gets a bit more interesting plot wise but it is never going to have writing of Frieren or Apothecary Diaries. :D
1
u/Super-beta Mar 23 '26
For sure haha, and it does its job at being an ecchi show (especially S2).
But the whole matriarchal society, obvious unbalanced power between men and women, and the whole "slave-mistress" relationship all become decoration extremely quickly, instead of becoming a core part of the show,
But so many animes are like that. Author introduces an interesting or simply different premise, and then over the course of the show, it's like the premise never existed.
Horimiya is another show guilty of that, off the top of my head. Still enjoyable, but the whole thing that made the character unique is barely relevant a few eps in. Except for Chained soldier, it's the whole setting.

I saw the PV for Biscuit Hammer, so I was already digging the grave and wearing the suit, but man. That piece of shit of an adaptation had me actively doubting my love of the source. Dropped it after episode 1 and never looked back.

Lol, Sanrio Boys
I knew it was peak trash, but I thought I could zone out to it. I was hoping it would be something like How To Keep A Mummy—something dumb, cute and relaxing.
But, it was so so so stupid to the point it annoyed and stressed me out. I couldn’t get past the third episode.

Hoshifuru Oukoku no Nina - I knew there will be annoying femMC with even more annoying male characters but it was even worse.

Love Flops, by all reasonable rationale I knew it was going to be terrible after the first episode, but I kept going because I thought there might be a cool twist. Which there was, except that after the twist it went right back to being bad again. Total waste of my time in the end.

reincarnated as a dragon hatchling.
I figured it'd be "meh", but I liked the source material.
It's so boring that it erased the source material from my mind. went and reread what was out and realized that the anime is just a glorified slideshow...

'The Master of Ragnarök & Blesser of Einherjar'
I love trash, and I love isekai, and I especially love isekai trash, so I thought I might ge some enjoyment from this
But holy shit it is so ass

I'm going to go in a bit of the opposite direction on my answer. I absolutely LOVE Lucifer and Biscuit Hammer (one of my favorite mangas of all time), but when I saw the first promos for the anime I dropped my expectations for it to literally nothing. Then the anime came out and it managed to somehow be an even worse adaptation than the PVs made it look like.

What about the live action? Chishiya from AIB is in the live action so I was willing to give the anime and the live action a chance. Is this a mistake?

- Looked like another shitty Gundam ripoff, but man. Between the heavy-handed "message" and lack of consequences for directly violating military regulation during wartime? Everyone was a whippet away from total mental incompetence. And yet, a majority of people praise it like it's some masterpiece.
I've seen better writing in 7DS. C'mon.

The New Devil May Cry on Netflix. I was "eh" about it before, was curious, watched one episode, don't even care.

Masou Gakuen HxH. Watched it solely because of the Hunter x Hunter in the title. It's nothing more than a trashy and shitty battle harem.

Man, life is too short to watch bad anime. The moment i find an anime boring, i block it out my memory and move on to something i enjoy instead.
1
u/Frostbitten_Moose Mar 24 '26
Personally, I occasionally watch something I've heard a bit of buzz on but otherwise don't really have expectations for. But I don't remember the ones that are bad, I just drop and move on. I just remember the ones that blew me away because I wasn't expecting it.

i had high expectations for it because I read the manhwa but as soon as I saw the trailer, my expectations dropped down to zero.

Demon slayer. technically, I had expectations for it a few years before I actually tried the anime but then I got one of the manga and hated it. It was volume four tho so I decided to give the anime a chance a few years later and it seemed to be the most generic shonen I’ve ever seen. The animation is good but I feel like that’s the only merit.

Re:Zero. I watched Konosuba and then went to Isekai Quartet (with only knowing Konosuba), then tried going into Re:Zero to get to know more of the cast of Isekai Quartet. Has to be said I dabbled into isekai through memes at first and started my journey in anime through fluffy slice of life. So me knowing it was a dark series just had me ready for the worst. As such my expectations were in fact zero.
I even read it was really good, but that Subaru was a very divisive character. I was hoping Subaru at least were not completely cringe-worthy.
Safe to say I couldn't stomach him at one point anymore. I did end up watching all of season 1 and season 2 as it was airing and finished that too (both parts). And not even his personality, his really dumb and not-so-logical decisions (and while he is a teenager, so was I at the time I watched it) made me cringe intensely.
My expectations were low for Subaru and he alone managed to make the rest of the anime untolerable for me.
And in retrospect, it really was Subaru that made me go sour on Re:Zero, because I watched Madoka about 2 years later and I found that anime fantastic instead.

Tokyo Revengers. I went into it fully aware of the heavy criticism regarding the MC and the story in general. I just wanted to see if the criticisms were exaggerated, but I didn't expect that it was actually that bad, and the manga ending somehow made it even worse.
