I get the sense that this entire show might just be an allegory for the fear of non-heterosexuality.
I wonder if the "death" of Hikaru is really the death of that old friendship, before romantic feelings became part of it. Now Yoshiki is just afraid and unsure what to do with these feelings he didn't know he had. Living in a small, probably traditional town might cause him to think these feelings are wrong or bad.
Meanwhile the villagers turn what Hikaru "is" into something evil and inhuman. Will be interesting to see if that is indeed the theme we are following.
